Christus Rex Our Lord, Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

This weekend, we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. This title of Jesus refers to his place in the kingdom of Heaven, seated at the right hand of God the Father. The holy day was instituted in 1925 by Pope Pius XI to remind the faithful that their allegiance is to their spiritual ruler in heaven, and that earthly rulers are fleeting. This solemnity is one of most important in the Roman Catholic calendar, as it not only reaffirms our faith in Christ, ruler and redeemer of all, but also ends the liturgical year, with the following Sunday always being the first Sunday of Advent and the first Sunday of the new liturgical year. Similar to the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, many institutions hold eucharistic adoration on this day. On this day is also sung one of the churches oldest and longest hymns, Laudes Regiae, The Royal Praises. Christus Vincit - Christ conquers (sin and death) Christus Regnat - Christ reigns (for eternity) Christus Imperat - Christ commands (and leads his people) And English version was composed by Monsignor Martin B. Hellgriel in 1941; we know this as “To Jesus Christ Our Sovereign King” and also sing this on this great day.

ORIGINALITY Remember that God prefers the poverty of our hearts to the most sublime thoughts borrowed from others.

The infancy narratives are arguably the most beautiful and intriguing passages in the Gospels. Within these narratives we encounter the Gospels of Matthew and Luke in miniature. Journey with us as Dr. Jim Bridges guides us through an exploration of the compositions casting light on their theological purpose. From the child in the manger to the Magi’s search for the infant Jesus, the evangelists create two unique narratives that reveal the importance of Jesus of Nazareth. Come experience the narratives that captured our imagination for nearly 2000 years.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate The Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ the King. Self-giving service is a small price to pay for our share in this eternal glory. Living the paschal mystery means that we don’t count the cost but always find strength, hope, encouragement in the glimpse of final victory that we are repeatedly given throughout the liturgical year. Living the paschal mystery means that we see the victorious Christ even in the everyday trials and difficulties that we face. Living the paschal mystery means that we are ever faithful to the rhythm of dying and rising as it unfolds every day—in our prayer, work, leisure. Living the paschal mystery means that we are “priests” (that is, mediators) for those whom we meet—that we are the body of Christ leading others to holier lives and happier commitment. If someone should then ask us, "“What have you done?” (see gospel) our answer would come quickly and surely—we have served our King.

As we conclude this Month of All Saints and All Souls, I take this opportunity to thank those involved in our Parish Consolation Ministries. Next weekend we begin the Season of Advent. This marks the beginning of a new liturgical year. The Lectionary Cycle of scripture readings for Sundays and Solemnities will be taken from Cycle C and the weekday readings from Year I. Many thanks to all of our parish volunteers who have assisted us in preparing our parish community for a new liturgical year beginning with Advent.

Several weeks ago we presented our Parish Sacramental Registers for inspection by the Episcopal Vicar for Monmouth County, Reverend Msgr. Edward Arnister who reviewed each of them and imparted his signature on each. Additionally, we provided the required documentation for the nomination of two Lay Trustees who are representative of the parish congregation in accord with NJ Civil Law by the President or Vice President acting as delegate. The trustees serve for a maximum of 6 years. Our Parish Lay Trustees are Irene Weller and Bill LaMorte. The re-appointment of the Pastor as the Secretary/Treasurer in accordance with NJ Civil Code was also executed. Each Roman Catholic Parish in NJ is established by both Canon Law and Civil Law. The Most Reverend Bishop appoints a pastor to serve the community in the name of the Bishop who is the head of the Local Church which is the Diocese. The Pastor also serves as Secretary-Treasurer in accord with NJ Civil Law with the Most Reverend Bishop as President and the Very Reverend Vicar General as Vice President. I share this with you so that you are aware of how parishes are established and how oversight is exercised.

Thank you for your continued stewardship so that we can care for our parishioners needs and keep our facilities up to date and safe for all. May this new liturgical year continue to draw us into the mystery of God’s love manifested to us in the Incarnation. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Christmas Sponsor-A-Family

Purchase gifts for a family. You select the size of the family you wish to sponsor (2-6 people). Several families or a group of people can sponsor a larger family. Gifts per person are usually a value of $50 and based on a list of needed items prepared by the family. This program adopts families from Aslan Youth Ministries, The Center in Asbury Park, Family Resource Associates and the Highpoint School. The goal is to sponsor families in need at Christmas. If you, your family, your neighbors, coworkers, or friends would like to sponsor a family in need this holiday season, please contact co-chairs:

Sue Levine [email protected] Kathy Maher [email protected]

“Light Up a Memory”

“Light Up a Memory” has become a beautiful Christmas tradition at St. Mary’s and is now in its 11th year, thanks to the support of an enthusiastic community. It is heartwarming to see the hundreds of lights sparkle during the Christmas season. For a contribution of $10.00 per light, people are invited to sponsor a light in memory of someone deceased or in honor of a living person. All of the names will be inscribed in the Light Up a Memory book, which will be displayed in The Parish of Saint Mary Gathering Space. A lovely card of acknowledgement is provided with each $10.00 donation. There will be a tree Lighting Ceremony on Sat., Dec. 15, after the 4:00 Mass, with music provided by St. Mary’s Choir. Refreshments will be served in the Gathering Space after the ceremony. These “memories” will glow until the feast of “Little Christmas” on Jan. 6.

The deadline to reserve a light is Monday, Dec. 3, so call the parish 732-780-2666, Molly Aiello 732-598-6808 or Freda O’Doherty 732-577-9541.

Everyone is welcome to participate in this wonderful tribute to our loved ones.
