Gifts of Love

On October 4th, the Church celebrated the feast of a man who is arguably the most famous ʺFrancisʺ in history,

namely St. Francis of Assisi. Another Francis who has had an enduring impact on the spiritual life of the Church for centuries, is St. Francis de Sales -- the man for whom Fr. Tomʹs former parish in Patchogue is named. The follow-ing prayer--one of my favorites--is his. I think its senti-

ment is perfect for the uncertain, worrisome, and conflict-ed times in which we find ourselves living. It was mailed to me just a week ago, from the retreat house where I hope

to be spending the coming week in prayer and silence. I hope you find it as reassuring and helpful as I do.

Be At Peace By Saint Francis de Sales

Do not look forward in fear to the changes in life; rather, look to them with full hope that as they arise, God, whose very own you are, will lead you safely through all things; and when you cannot stand it, God will carry you in His arms. Do not fear what may happen tomorrow; the same understanding Father who cares for you today will take care of you then and every day. He will either shield you from suffering or will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.

Amen

Respect Life Month

The month of October is a special time of prayer, reflection, and activism on behalf of the sacredness of human life, whether born or as yet unborn. As a believing community, we are challenged to see the living face of Christ in each and every person, and to do all we can to reverence the lives around us—particularly those who are most needy, vul-nerable, or casually brushed aside. Though the COVID pandemic will hamper some of our familiar efforts (e.g., the blessing of newly baptized babies), please be mindful of the following opportunities to lend your prayers, energy, and resources to defending the defenseless and reaching out to those whom our culture rejects or diminishes:

The Holy Rosary is prayed communally following the 9:00 AM Mass on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

On Sunday, October 25th, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for ad-oration at the end of the 11:00 AM Mass. Please make even a brief visit anytime before 3:30 PM, to beseech the Lord of Life to convert hearts and minds toward a genuine reverence for the sacredness of every human person.

Commemorating the 25th anniversary of Pope St. John Paul II’s encyclical, Evangelium Vitae, Bishop Barres has published a pastoral letter reaffirming the Church’s teaching not only on the sacredness of unborn life, but on the whole spectrum of life issues. The complete text can be found on our website: www.stlawrencesayville.org

Take time to explore other helpful sites and materials, including 40daysforlife.com, lifecenterli.org, and re-spectlife.org.

Early next year, we hope once again to participate in the popular “Baby Bottle Campaign” to benefit the work of the Life Center of Long Island.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Sunday, October 25th with Exposition after the 11:00 Mass until 3:30 P.M.

Sunday, October 25th, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for adoration at the end of the 11:00 AM Mass. Please make even a brief visit anytime before 3:30 PM,

to beseech the Lord of Life to convert hearts and minds toward a genuine reverence for the sacred-ness of every human person.

OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT The parish of St. Lawrence the Martyr is a family of be-lievers, rooted in the Roman Catholic faith, and striving to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ in both word and ac-tion.

As disciples of the risen Lord, and stewards of his ex-traordinary gifts, we seek to grow strong in faith, hope, and love. With the parish as our spiritual home, we com-mit ourselves to prayer, to teaching the faith, and to serving the needs of the poor.

Nourished by the Word of God and the Church’s sacra-ments, we cherish our rich Catholic heritage as we strive to build a welcoming faith community and proclaim Christ to the world. We look to our patron, St. Law-rence, who challenges us to see in one another—and in all God’s children—the “treasure of the Church.”

At the present time Mass is

being celebrated: Monday, Wednesday and

Thursday at 9:00A.M.

Weekend Masses: Saturdays at 5:00P.M., and

Sundays at 9:00 and 11:00A.M.

ʺEternal Rest, Grant Unto Them, O Lord . . .ʺ

Join us for one of two special

Masses of gratitude and remem-brance, to be offered on

All Souls Day, Monday, November 2nd

9:00 AM in the church &

7:00 PM in the church (with recitation of names & lighting of candles )

All Souls Day gives us an annual opportunity to lift up our hearts in prayer for our loved ones who have died, and to ask the Lord of Life to bring them home. The names of those from our parish who have died in the past year will be read aloud

at the 7:00 PM Mass with a special lighting of memorial candles, but ALL our parishioners and their families are

encouraged to attend.

THANKS TO OUR GARDENERS!

Over these several months, many people have found comfort and mental/physcial relief by getting their hands dirty out in the garden. Here at St. Lawrence, we continue to enjoy the bless-ing of a small but very energetic and creative group who form our Gardening Minis-try. Youʹve hopefully noticed that, on both sides of Handsome Ave., the colors of summer have been replaced by those of autumn. Enjoy the mums (and the little scarecrows!). And many thanks to our gardeners -- you bring color and cheer at a time when many are struggling to re-main upbeat.
