Parish and Community News SISTER PARISH SEMINARIANS NEED ASSISTANCE

A sister Parish is reaching out with a need. Any help we can give them will be greatly appreciated. Here is what is happening in their part of the World.

I wanted to make you aware of the current situation in the Jalapa Diocese due to the pandemic. They have not been able to have Mass with the public since March. In case you do not know, the priests of Jalapa do not get paid and rely on their parishioners to give them resources for their daily living ex-penses. Without seeing parishioners, it has left the priests without a way to pay for daily expenses. This is why some of you may have noticed receipts for priest personal needs on your reports. In addition, people are afraid to work, there is little activity in communities, and there have been deaths.

Now we have been informed that 21 seminarians

from Jalapa who were attending classes at the major seminary in Guatemala City have been sent back to Jalapa. When they are at the seminary the bishop of Guatemala City receives help from friends in Europe and Guatemala to help cover the costs. Re-turning to Jalapa has left the new bishop, Mons Benedicto Moscoso Miranda, struggling to figure out how to pay for their food and care. Unfortunately, they do not have parishes to return to as we do here, and even if they did the parishes don’t have the resources to care for them. The 21 men are cur-rently staying at the Diocesan Center in Jalapa. Mons Benedicto believes they will be there until December. This temporary seminary has two priests in charge and the seminarians are doing classes electronically with their teachers from the major seminary in Guatemala City.

Mons Benedicto shared he believes it will cost about $2,486.00 to feed these men for a month. In addi-tion, there is the added cost of electricity, mainte-nance and kitchen staff that runs about $920.00 a month. Prior to the pandemic, they would have re-treats and other activities that would rent the dioce-san center to help with these costs, but that is not possible now either. Missions International sent a $2000.00 donation to help with the 21 seminarians in this emergency situation. We do not want to take away from your sister parish, but if it is possible for your parish to send an extra donation it would be greatly appreciated. Please mark it for the seminari-ans. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you and may God richly bless you

Shelly Sands, Missions International

The Marriage Minute - Treat each other with kindness.

"We can cure physical diseases with medicine but the only cure for

loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love. There are many in the

world who are dying for a piece of bread but there are many more who

are dying for a little love. Let us not be satisfied with just giving

money. Money is not enough, money can be got, but they need your

hearts to love them. So spread love everywhere you go." –St. Mother

Teresa of Calcutta

"Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your own house.

Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next

door neighbor... Let no one ever come to you without leaving

better and happier. Be the living expression of God's kindness;

kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your

smile, kindness in your warm greeting." –St. Mother Teresa of

Calcutta

The Crucifix –

The Core Christian ImageWhat shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called

Christ?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify

him!" "Why? What crime has he committed?"

asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder,

"Crucify him!" (Matthew 27:22-23)

The crucifix, that is, a cross with the body

of our Lord upon it, is the core Christian im-

age. Some Christians say that Christ should not be portrayed

upon the cross, since He is risen from the dead. Yet, for us who as

St. Paul says, "make up for what is lacking in the sufferings of

Christ (Col. 1:13)," the crucifix urges us on because it is the love of

Christ (II Cor. 5:14) made visible. The cross itself only has meaning and value because

Jesus Christ, God made man, hung upon it. Crucifixion, a horrible

means of execution and an ignominious death, has been transformed to

be a means of life-giving love because sin and death died upon

it. Jesus went forward to rise from the dead and to raise all who be-

lieve in Him.

But the further power of the crucifix is that it gives hope

to us who suffer. It shows that good can be brought out of evil, espe-

cially the evil that strikes us or strikes those we love. It shows that

suffering has value when it is united to God who suffered. Indeed,

Christianity is the only religion that believes that God became human

and that He suffered and died for humanity!

So if you do not have a crucifix in your house, get one! Indeed, every room should have one. And if you have a crucifix in your house, office, classroom, church, or elsewhere, look often upon it to be re-minded of the love that God has for YOU and indeed all the world AND what you too can do through and for Jesus!

Catholic Terms

crucifix (Latin cruc, crux "cross" + figere "to fasten, to

affix" = "to fasten to a cross"; crucifīgere "to crucify")

- an image of a cross with the body of Jesus upon it

[It is usually made of wood. Due reverence is always given to

it. It is sometimes carried as a processional cross leading a line

of clergy. Depicting the dead or suffering Christ, the crucifix

did not come into general use until after the Reformation. The

earlier ones represented Our Lord as the High Priest crowned,

robed, and alive. Some men and women religious wear the

crucifix as part of their habit. A crucifix is attached to the Ro-

sary beads, and many liturgical blessings are to be given with

it. A blessed crucifix is a sacramental and is commonly dis-

played in Catholic hospitals, homes, and institutions.]

Overcoming Obstacles. Jeremiah complains that be-cause of the compelling presence of God within, he can-not not speak God’s message. Paul urges us not to con-form ourselves to this age. And Peter, trying to protect Jesus, blurts out “God forbid” and becomes an obstacle to Jesus’ mission. Baptized followers of Jesus must deny, take up the cross, and follow.

In denying self, how will I attend to another’s need

SACRED SCRIPTURE CORNER: The Lowest Place “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who

humbles himself will be exalted." -Luke 14:11 What does it mean to be

humble? Humility is an acknowledgment of the truth. This doesn't

mean that we put ourselves down and think the worst of ourselves. It

means that we acknowledge the things we do well and the things that

we don't. We don't think less of ourselves if we weren't given a certain

gift or ability, and we give the credit for the gifts we do have to God,

who blessed us with them. If you notice in this parable, the man was

told to take the lowest place, but when his friend invited him to the

higher place, he was not directed to decline, but to enjoy the blessing

given by his friend. The Lord has given us our particular gifts to build up

the Body of Christ, and He will show us how to use them if we ask Him. Further Reading: Matthew 23:11-12

Spiritual Warfare "Our struggle is not with flesh and

blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rul-ers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens." -Ephesians 6:12 Do you ever think of yourself engaged in spiritual war-fare? Often those words bring up thoughts of exorcisms and other ex-treme cases. However, in reality, fighting temptation and living the Gos-pel are themselves forms of spiritual warfare. Therefore, believe it or not, we actually engage in this battle every day. The verse above shows an important distinction: it is important to properly define our enemy. If we do not do this, then our response may appear to lead us to victory when, in fact, it leads us to defeat. Our biggest weapons in spiri-tual warfare are prayer and fasting. Remember the wise words of Saint Francis de Sales: “Every one of us needs half an hour of prayer a day, except when we are busy – then we need an hour.” Further Read-ing: 2 Corinthians 10:4

A kind person acts in benevolent, gentle, and loving ways. In marriage, kindness is demonstrated through generous acts, considerate behavior, and comforting words. Kindness comes from the same root as the word “kin,” someone who is a part of your family. Thus, when you show kind-ness to your spouse, you are treating him or her as a part of your family, as “bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh” (Genesis 2:23). These words are used at weddings to describe the ideal relationship between husband and wife. We see from this passage that for marriages to suc-ceed—that is, to be happy and healthy—then couples must treat each other with the same gentleness, courtesy, compassion, and respect that

they want for themselves. Think of 2-3 kind things you used to do

for parents or siblings that you can now do for your spouse.

WOMEN’S GROUP ONLINE-New Study

MONDAYS 7PM

Women’s Group is starting a new study on the Letter to the Ephesians and would love to have you join us!

The Letter to the Ephesians was one of the most widely circulated of St. Paul’s writings because of its powerful, practical instructions for disciples of Christ. In fact, its six short chapters contain some of the most discussed passages in the New Testa-ment. This study will explore what Paul’s letter to the Ephesians tells us about the nature of the Church–as a body, as a household, as a mystery, as a communion, as a bride, and as an army. Please join us Mondays ONLINE at 7pm!
