“Work Clothes

Today’s Turning Point/Dr. David Jeremiah/August 4, 2021

We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. Romans 5:3, NLT Swiss engineer George de Mestral grew frustrated with a recurring problem. Whenever he went hiking, his clothes and his dog would be covered with burrs. The little pods were hard to pry out of his socks and nearly impossible to get of his dog’s hair. De Mestral decided to study his problem under a microscope. He was amazed at the tiny hooks in the burrs. The experience led him to invent Velcro. Writing in Inc. Magazine, Jayson Demers says successful entrepreneurs all have one thing in common. “Rather than seeing problems as burdensome forces of opposition, they see problems as opportunities – opportunities to learn, grow, improve, or adjust in a way that leaves them better off than before the problem existed.” It takes time to develop this mindset, says Demers, but if we train our minds to view our problems as opportunities, we’ll become more adept at handling them with less stress and more success. Think of a problem you’re facing right now. It may actually be a great opportunity to serve the Lord. He will use that difficulty for good if you’ll just stick with Him through it! Problems are only opportunities in work clothes. Henry J. Kaiser” PONDERINGS FROM FATHER BILL In recent times I have had so many burials, all of them obviously sad to loved ones. One burial was the suicide of a young woman, who could no longer cope with the stresses of this pandemic world. (The politicians instituting lockdowns must remember the horrors it unleashes on regular folk, especially with economic depravity and twisted interpersonal relationships.) The gathered family and loved ones at a rural cemetery had mentioned the numerous past obstacles this young mother had often overcome and learned from, but the final challenges proved to be too much. Developing the mindset to endure, as the article states, is a daily exercise while each day throws a different set of circumstances at us diverse from the one 24 hour segment to the next. We all experience fatigue and dismay, but brighter circles of hope are not far behind. We must look future- focused to transcend the minute developments of the current moment, seeing them as rich spiritual opportunities for self-knowledge and growth in understanding God more deeply. When Nikki was buried, I played the Burt Bacharach song also named “Nikki“ after his daughter who committed suicide a decade ago. Burt later recorded “God Give Me Strength,“ which is exactly what we need to face the burdens of life and to be for the durability to face another day under the approaching sun and moon. FatherBill

TODAY TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Reading I: Joshua 24: 1-2a, 15-17, 18b The prophet confronts the 12 tribes with the question: will you keep your covenant with Yahweh or not? They agree to stay united in a bond with Yahweh rather than desert Him. Reading II: Ephesians 5: 21-32a, or 5:2a, 25-32 Paul first presents a code of conduct for a Christian household that includes a hierarchical order from husband on down. Then he presents the notion of Christ’s identity with His Church to which He gave His all. The Gospel: John 6: 60-69 Following on last week’s announcement of the Holy Eucharist, this section gives us the crowd’s reaction and that of the Twelve. In the latter, St. Peter gives the classic response. Monday: 1 Thes 1:1-5, 8b-10; Ps 149:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6a, 9b; Mt 23:13-22 Tuesday: Rv 21:9b-14; Ps 145:10-11, 12-13, 17-18; Jn 1:45-51 Wednesday: 1 Thes 2:9-13; Ps 139:7-8, 9-10, 11-12ab; Mt 23:27-32 Thursday: 1 Thes 3:7-13; Ps 90:3-5a, 12-13, 14, 17; Mt 24:42-51 Friday: 1 Thes 4:1-8; Ps 97:1, 2b, 5-6, 10-12; Mt 25:1-13 Saturday: 1 Thes 4:9-11; Ps 98:1, 7-8, 9; Mt 25:14-30 UPCOMING TRIP HOSTED BY FR. Council of Nicea 325AD NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen “We have absolutely no difficulty regarding having to work in countries with many faiths. We treat all people as children of God. They are our brothers and sisters. We show respect to them. Our work is to encourage these people, Christians as well as non-Christians, to do works of love. Every work of love done with a full heart brings people closer to God.”

Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Father John will be away on vacation from August 12 through September 24. During this time, confessions at Sacred Heart will take place after the 5:30pm mass.

GLORIA

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavingly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.Amen.
