Clergy Letter

Advent is a time of watching and waiting – candles are lit every Advent Sunday, making our homes and lives brighter as we get closer to Christmas. What do you need for a “good” Christmas? Among your wishes there is certainly harmony in the family, uplifting music and services in the church, nice food. As for me: snow would be lovely! We begin to prepare: we go to buy or produce presents for our beloved ones. We prepare meals, in hope that everybody will enjoy them. I think of the people near and far I have neglected – I hope a Christmas card will reconcile them. But of course these three and a half weeks are not enough to make up for what I have failed to do throughout the year; Which reminds us that there is much more to Advent and Christmas. Ignoring the beautiful pictures full of harmony and fulfilment in TV adverts, may we never lose sight of what goes further than presents and a Christmas tree.

Those who walked in the dark have seen a bright light. And it shines upon everyone who lives in the land of darkest shadows.

(Isaiah 9.2) The “land of darkest shadows”, or, as some translations put it: “the land of the shadow of death”: We know the dark sides of our lives, and the darkness in this world. Especially at Christmas we remember those we have loved and lost. It is a flaw in our faith that it is not possible to have peace on earth at least for Christmas when the angels sing. As I write these lines the 13th November attacks in Paris are just a few hours ago. And I came back from the German-Austrian border a few days ago, seeing tents with refugees at Salzburg Station and friends telling me

of the support for refugees in my former parish.

The world is in a mess – and always has been. And yet, it is exactly those conditions where God wants to come to heal and save. When the Roman emperor had ordered that everybody's name had to be written into a list to estimate what he and his work was worth, God decided that this world, with all its hunger and wars and injustices was worth of the most precious: his love in Jesus Christ. The first Christmas was certainly no idyll: young parents who had not planned pregnancy, under awkward conditions they had to go on a journey, not knowing where to find shelter, the birth took place in dire hygienic circumstances – and with their little one they had to flee to save their baby's life. They gave him the name Jesus: Yeshua in Hebrew, which means God delivers, God rescues. Not only the people in his time – his promise holds for us, as well. With all good wishes for a happy and blessed Christmas

Bishops Letter

For many of us December brings with it a potent blend of pleasure and panic. Pleasure, because if all goes well there is at least the promise of a Christmas break from the usual routines and space for celebration and good times with family and friends. There can also be a feeling of panic: am I sufficiently prepared now that the countdown to the festivities has begun in earnest and the celebrations are rapidly approaching? Even if the annual family letter has given way to an update of your face book page there are still the presents, the cards, the various family gatherings, food and parties to organise and arrange. Perhaps more worryingly the issues of overspending, overeating and overindulging loom in the background with the wish that the January reality check doesn't kick in too soon. None of this is helped by the fact that almost before bonfire night was over nearly every advert on commercial television has encouraged us to enter into their world of glamour, escape and bling. Garrison Keillor the American author wrote in his usual dry wit "A lovely thing about Christmas is that it's compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together." The commercial world motivated by profits is driven by the bottom line. When the festivities finish for yet another year the judgement of success of the Christmas season rests in sales. Whether the purchases are gifts to others or for ourselves, behind the charm, twinkly adverts and nostalgic images lie these strong forces. Being aware of the dangers does not mean that we are to avoid it all. There can be a lot of goodness and kindness in and through it. What is needed is perspective. What is Christmas for and how might we prepare well? Although all too easily drowned out, the custom of marking Advent is a good one. It encourages us in the weeks up to Christmas to prepare emotionally and spiritually as well as practically by reflecting on the big issues of life, of human failure, mortality, right judgment and wise living in a fractured world: to look at our own needs and the needs of others. Advent sets our lives in the framework of the hope and purposes of God to bring restoration, new creation and his kingdom rule of justice and peace, it calls us to be reconciled to God and to reflect again on how to be agents of reconciliation to others. Advent can open us to our need of God and the gift of his life. It helps us to hear afresh the angels message...to you is born in David's town a Saviour Christ the Lord.

Royal British Legion

Corvedale and district branch - AN APOLOGY We fully understand the concern and disappointment felt by the loyal band of some 26 Poppy sellers in the Corvedale who were unable to make collections this year. In explanation, Sheila and I reached a decision that we should give up the role of organising the collection after some 18 years doing the job which we much enjoyed. To ensure continuity, we informed the county and headquarters of the Royal British Legion in 2013 and were assured that the matter was in hand. The county organiser was transferred shortly afterwards; a replacement left within months. Promises were not kept. We and you have been let down by the organisation. The good news is that Mrs. Margaret Jones has now volunteered to take over the task in readiness for 2016. We are delighted that support for the Poppy Appeal will resume. Our records show total donations of over £48,000 since we took over in 1997, a wonderful achievement for such a small and scattered area – congratulations to you all. Gerald and Sheila Good

It will be your chance to hear more about the initiatives being developed to explore different approaches to flood management and to ask any questions you may have about 'Slow the Flow' the catchment project about to begin in Culmington. An interesting short film will be shown reporting on the work undertaken in Stroud in response to the flooding problems experience there and should demonstrate how some of the same solutions could be used as part of the Culmington project. Please do put the date in your diary and we will look forward to seeing you in the new year.

A reminder Please keep an eye on gullies and gratings and report any gullies that are full or in need of attention to the Highways Maintenance department. On line reporting may be done on the Shropshire Website http//www.shropshire.gov.uk/highways-and-traffic/highway-maintenance/ Alternatively call customer services on 0345 678 9018 Remember the simple action of scraping debris from the top of a grating during a walk helps to keep the systems working between maintenance visits. Philip Dunne MP I was going to write this article all about the approaching Christmas season of good cheer and encourage good neighbourliness within our communities. I will still touch on this, but as I write, the appalling atrocities in Paris of a few weeks ago remain fresh in my mind. Thankfully we have been spared such terror on our streets for some time. But I well remember the bus and tube bombs in London a decade ago in which 52 people tragically lost their lives, with over 700 injured. It occurred two months after I was first elected to Parliament, and I was sitting on the green benches as the news started to come through. We cannot therefore be complacent or assume we will be immune to terrorists seeking to disrupt our peaceful way of life. Here in Shropshire this may seem unduly pessimistic. But we can all be touched by terror, even if it is not on our doorstep. Last month a friend of mine, who lives near Ludlow, was eating in a restaurant in Paris not far from where the gunman struck down others minding their own business out for dinner in a restaurant. Thank goodness she was unharmed, but she was close by and was unable to leave her place of safety for some hours. Our security services have foiled seven terror plots on mainland Britain this year. The Government has in my view given appropriate priority to boosting their personnel and seeking to update their investigatory powers to reflect current means of communication and means of disseminating information. We should not give in to extremist terror tactics, which aim to disrupt our daily lives, in the name of a warped sense of Islamic fundamentalism. We need by contrast to undermine their rationale by showing how modern democracies can develop with people of differing views and beliefs living in harmony. Christmas is a good time to do this. While those of us who are Christian take comfort from the birth of Christ and the hope which this gives the world, we can all follow his example of selflessness to help others. Many families come together over Christmas, yet some either have no family or do not see them at this time. Some in public service and other essential jobs do not get the chance to take much time off over Christmas. So spare a thought for those who might be working or lonely later this month. It is the season for good neighbours to take in others for a drink or a meal. If you have elderly friends or neighbours who may struggle in winter, consider offering to drop by or help over Christmas. By being a little generous with our time and efforts, we can all make this a happier Christmas in our community. (Continues on page 20)

Corvedale School An update to Life at Corvedale School The second half of the Autumn Term is always a busy one in schools. We held our Harvest Festival Service at St. Peters Church, Diddlebury which was attended by many parents and friends. The children all brought in donations of tinned or dried goods which were in turn donated to the Food Bank in Craven Arms. Each class contributed to the service with harvest poems, songs and stories. Class 2 and 3 attended the Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial. Dave Hedgley spent some time in Class 3 giving some local historical background, helping the children connect with the event. They laid a cross to commemorate the death of Harry Hince, who was the first ex pupil of Diddlebury School to loss his life in the 1st World. Christmas will soon be upon us and the excitement that brings will soon be evident in school life. Class 1 and 2 will be preparing the Nativity play which is performed in school on Monday 14th December starting at 2.00pm which is open to all, and then again on Tuesday evening for parents. Class 3 will be leading the Carol Service which is St. Peter’s, Diddlebury starting at 6.30pm. We would be pleased to see as many of you who would like to join us.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES Diddlebury & Westhope WI Eleven members attended our AGM meeting on 10th November. Pat, who was deputising for our Secretary, read the minutes of the last AGM and Kath, our President, signed them. Kath gave her report as President and summarised our activities of the last year including Mary Hall’s attendance at Buckingham Palace for the W.I. Garden Party, followed by Judy who gave her Treasurer’s report in which she said that we continued to be financially viable with careful planning particularly in regard to speakers. Kath and Judy agreed to continue in their posts for the next year, and Mary Holland, in her absence, was voted to continue as Secretary. Judy had been wearing two hats for the last couple of years, and Jane Cockburn agreed to take over the press reports from her. Jane said she would be happy to help out when needed and Pat would continue to be Deputy Secretary. Mary Hall would continue to run the trading stall, and Liz would continue to run the competition. Everyone else would be most welcome to attend the committee meetings as and when. The AGM was declared over and we continued with our normal meeting. The minutes of our last meeting were agreed and we turned our attention to arrangements for our Christmas party. Members were asked to consider how we might spend our bursary from the Ludlow North Group with an event/outing that everyone could participate in if they wished. Emma mentioned that Corvedale School were holding a Winter Fair and

we agreed that we would take a table next year to raise funds, giving us enough time to prepare items for sale. Mary mentioned that there would be a Christmas whilst drive at Westhope on 14th December and asked for helpers to make cakes and serve refreshments. Then the highlight of the evening – delicious refreshments consisting of mushroom soup, and profiteroles, cream horns and sweet vol-au-vents prepared by Sheila and Emma. Afterwards we played a couple of games of bingo, courtesy of Mary – one member got very excited when she got her first number (you know who you are) and the two games were won by Pat and Kath respectively who each received a bag of liquorice allsorts. Thanks Mary. The competition, a Christmas cracker, was won by Jane with Liz as runner up. Our next meeting is our Christmas party on 8th December, and our first meeting next year will be on 12th January when we will provide our own entertainment as our meeting will be at the mercy of the weather. We are always pleased to welcome visitors and if you would like to know more, please phone Judy on 01584 861403 or Mary on 01584 861301. Judy McNally

Report of the meeting on Thursday, November 12th 2015, at 7.30pm in Stanton Lacy Village Hall. Eileen Pritchard welcomed members to our November meeting and AGM. Invitations to neighbouring institutes Christmas parties had been received; £20 from our ACWW pennies collection had been sent to India to help with a project to educate women in the fashion and tailoring industry. Our collection at the Christmas party next month (instead of exchanging cards) would again go to the Charity Smile Train. The AGM followed with Janet Bryan reading the minutes of the 2014 AGM, and the annual report, reminding us of a busy year of outings and meetings. Joyce Randle gave the financial report which showed our fundraising efforts had swelled the coffers nicely. Eileen thanked all the members for supporting the Institute, and the committee for organizing the year’s activities. The present committee is willing to continue and was elected ‘en bloc’. Eileen Pritchard agreed to continue as president so we look forward to another successful year. Rose Lloyd thanked Eileen for her excellent leadership during another enjoyable year. We then continued with refreshments of homemade soup from Sue Parker and Dot Williams with home produced apple juice and bread, courtesy of Catherine Pees. Flower competition:- 1st Sue Parker, penstemon; 2nd Gill Parker, nerine; 3rd Joyce Randle, dahlia. The next meeting will be our Christmas party on December 10th to which all are cordially invited; why not bring a friend as a fore taste to joining our group? Corvedale Book Group - November 2015

We were pleased to welcome a newcomer to Aston Munslow at our meeting where 6 of us settled down at the Swan to discuss Isabelle Allende’s Ines of my Soul. It is a story of a brave, determined, passionate and powerful woman who, despite little formal education and coming from a working family influenced the course of history on the other side of the world. Learning all about love and desire as a teenager from her husband to be Juan de Malaga, she was heartbroken when he left her to go to fight in Peru. Having to earn her living through making empanadas, sewing and healing, she saved a little and set off in pursuit. After a difficult voyage with her niece and travelling from town to town, she found he had died in battle. Undaunted, she took up her occupations again. She became involved with Pedro de Valdivia, who was field Marshall to the famous conquistador Pizarro who wiped out the Incas. Setting off with him to fulfil their dream of conquering Chile, her role was to arrange the logistics of food, water, bandages, medicines and general support. Despite an arduous crossing of the desert where her water dowsing skills were handy, she learned to ride astride, fire a gun, wear trousers and armour – uncommon in women of the 16th century when the Inquisition was rife. They found a verdant valley, planted a Spanish flag and built the settlement that became Santiago. The native Mapuche understandably objected and things got heated. The gory and arrogant behaviour which was a part of colonisation of that period made the story very uncomfortable reading from a 21st century perspective. It was hard to like the characters who caused such suffering and the eventual outcome seemed to be almost their just deserts. Nevertheless, one had to admire their determination and resourcefulness to even consider some of the steps they took when it could take 3 years to get a letter from Spain and many months to get provisions from Peru, by land or sea. Our final read this year is The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. This is a story of mothers’ expectations of their daughters and the difficulties of becoming a new generation as an immigrant from China to America. We will meet at 7.30 on Thursday 10th December at the Swan to discuss this.

Corvedale Garden Group - November 2015

The last meeting of the year was at Beambridge Clubroom where we enjoyed a presentation on Late Summer Perennials by Jack from Boutts Hardy Violas. Jack recounted the story of how he and Laura had met and Wisley, then worked at private gardens in Cheshire before searching for a walled garden to develop. His talk began with pictures of the walled garden at Millichope when it was in rack and ruin and moved on to highlight the bed they had planted last year which has had seasonal interest for 3 seasons. His knowledge of plants and planting seemed endless, as was his enthusiasm and we all came away with a number of tips to improve colour and interest in our gardens. Anne Donnelly and Christine Evans had kindly provided some excellent tomato, and tomato & courgette soup from a garden glut, which together with some wonderful home-made bread fortified us for a discussion of the highlights of 2015 and the provisional programme for 2016. It was agreed to have a formal printed programme to help to attract new members, which will be out shortly. In lieu of a fixed membership fee people are invited to make a small donation to the kitty to act as a buffer to provide the fees for speakers/visits when numbers are low. We decided that as the first Saturday in the month clashed with many local events and several bank holidays we would move the date of the meetings to the third Saturday and meet at 10 a.m. We will also meet from February to November, as we have cancelled the December meeting due to low numbers. Accordingly the

dates for next year are: 20th February; 19th March; 16th April; 21st May; 18th June; 16th July; 20th August; 17th September; 15th October; 19th November. We will also try to have a presence at the Corvedale Show on 3rd September to highlight what we do. Please let me know as soon as possible if these dates clash with any significant local event. Please put them in your diary. We would like to warmly invite anyone interested to join us for one or more meetings, lifts can be arranged if required. Accordingly, you are invited to join us at Beambridge Clubroom on Saturday 20th February at 10 a.m. for a plant and seed swop and to discuss plans for the forthcoming garden season. Anne Moore has very kindly offered to give a brief talk on propagation and taking cuttings. We will then have an informal ‘Gardener’s Question Time’ and try to answer each other’s queries.

Clearing any debris Managing vegetation within the

channel Ensuring the flow of water isn’t obstructed

You can also: Protect your property from flooding Protect your land from erosion

A watercourse is any natural or artificial channel above or below ground through which water flows, such as a river, stream, brook, beck, ditch, mill stream or culvert. As the owner of the property, under common law, you are responsible for the maintenance of the watercourse within it. If the watercourse flows along your property’s boundary then your responsibility is deemed to be up to its centreline. New Topic We’ve created a new topic for customers to subscribe to called “Shropshire’s Big Conversation”. We’re letting you know about this because you’re subscribed to receive information from one or more of our council services and the Big Conversation is about ALL our services. This new topic will bring you information around consultations specific to service delivery and how this may change in the future. It will also be used to let you know about updates in relation to The Big Conversations and include things like invitations to focus groups and other ways you can get involved in this huge project. It affects everyone so we’d encourage you to subscribe to it and get colleagues, friends and family to sign up also (simply forward this email on to them as it contains a link to the website where you can find out more and access a sign up link).

So what is the Big Conversation? The Big Conversation is the biggest consultation the council has launched as it effects all of the 150 plus services the council provides. Like all local authorities, the council is faced with the need to make further substantial savings in the coming years due to ongoing government cuts. In a few years’ time, we’ll have less than one quarter of the money that now funds 150+ council services which means we’ll have to stop delivering some services and we need your help to tell us which are important to you, and what you can do to help and make the remaining resources we have, go further For more information about the Big Conversation and to get involved, go to www.shropshire.gov.uk/bigconversation where you can also access a link to sign up to this new topic.
