INTERMISSION

Miniwanka..........................................R. Murray Schafer Miniwanka is an imitative piece describing the various states of water. The text consists ofwords for water, rain, stream, river, fog and ocean in the following North American Indian languages: Da-kota, Wappo, Crow, Chinook, Achumawi, Otchipwe, Salish, Natick, Klamath and Luiseno. The piecechronicles the transformation of water from raindrops, to streams and waterfalls, to quiet lakes, to broadrivers and finally through estuaries to the ocean. Needless to say, the choir has had its challenges in bringing this unique piece of music toyou. There is little traditional musical notation – the effect is achieved through vocal representations ofthe design elements of the score. The following is a piece of the score:

So, let your mind wander and your body will follow – from cloud banks and rain to themighty ocean! We hope that you enjoy our interpretation of Miniwanka...

I’m goin’ to put on my starry crown – Down by the riverside, down by the riverside, down by the riverside. I’m goin’ to put on my starry crown – Down by the riverside, and I ain’t gonna study war no more.

I ain’t gonna study war no more, I ain’t gonna study war no more, I ain’t gonna study war no more, I ain’t gonna study war no more, I ain’t gonna study war no more, I ain’t gonna study war no more!
