oN tHe CoverChinese New Year is one of the most celebrated

festivities in singapore. a time of family reunion,

excitement and endless feast. the cover depicts the

significance of customs during Lunar New Year, like the

overpowering red colour which signifies vibrancy and

good luck. the little girl draped in Chinese traditional

costume and welcoming spring denotes family, joy

and warmth, juxtaposed to the pine’s entourage.

ChristmasLight-upit was truly a night of stars under the scintillating lights. angelic

voices from the choir ushered in the Christmas season and kids

had their fair share of glass ball painting, free popcorns and

candies. they had the opportunity to meet santa Claus who

gave each child a special Christmas gift.

Backbone

the new central monocoque is an entirely new design made from

carbontitanium. the fuel tank is located integrally in the best

protected area of the monocoque, behind the driver, reinforced by

safety cell made of different composite and ballistic materials. the

front and rear Crmo subframes offer an exceptional rigidity-to-

weight ratio to allowing the suspensions to work at their best while

incorporating an advanced energy absorbing crash structure, ready

to protect the occupants in the unlikely event of an impact.

Heart

mercedes-amg provides the heart for the Huayra. the 60 degree 12

cylinder turbocharged engine with a displacement of 5980 cm3 has

been developed not just to meet the strictest technical and quality

requirements, but also to give the car its many faces. the calm

and harmony of driving one of the world’s most refined gt car is

interrupted when the driver calls upon the Huayra to unleash its

700 horsepower and 1000 Nm of torque. the two lateral radiators

are positioned in the front to guarantee the best cooling efficiency

of the intercoolers placed over the cylinder heads.

Skin

the aerodynamic concept of the Huayra is that of a wing. the vehicle

can modify the properties of this wing by varying the front ride

height, which can be adjusted dynamically, and by adjusting the 4

control flaps on each of the four corners of the car. the goal is to have

a neutral vehicle behavior under all conditions and control body roll

via aerodynamic means. in addition to the downforce generated by

the flaps and body, two high negative pressure areas were designed

into the shape of the underbody and the diffuser at the rear, thus

enhancing the aerodynamic stability and guaranteeing the Huayra

downforce under all circumstances.

Feet

the power and prodigious torque generated by Huayra’s v12 are

transferred to the wheels through a transverse sequential seven

speed gearbox and a dual plate clutch and the complete gearbox

weighs only 96 kg. keeping the weight of the rear overhang as low

as possible for a neutral behavior at the limit. xtrac’s expertise in

motorsports was obvious throughout the design and material

selection processes that resulted in the strongest and lightest

gearbox possible suitable for road use, with a synchromesh box that

offers comfort levels a race car gearbox will never be able to offer.

in the early eighties, mr kingsley a sinhalese, stepped

foot into singapore for the first time. the first three

digits on his membership card reads 100, a clear

indication of a prestigious pioneer since the pinetree

days. He frequents the Club’s gym every other day and

enjoys chilling out at the Waterfall bar on Fridays.

the pines is also mr kingsley’s place of choice for family

functions – the friendly greetings of the service staff and the

warmth and homely feel of the Club, he tells us, is what brings

his family there for celebratory occasions.

as the vice president of singapore sri Lanka business

association (ssLba), mr. kingsley plays a pivotal role in

spearheading business networks between the two countries.

the agms and meetings of the ssLba are often held at the

pines and mr kingsley has been a great ambassador for the

Club, never hesitating to recommend the pines for business

functions, and lauding the Club for its quality food and its

personal service.

an ardent fan of pine garden, mr. kingsley loves the assorted

roast meats, especially the peking duck. He recalls how many

years ago, in spite of a language barrier between him and the

Chinese chef, the dish was ordered and served to his exact

preference. He chuckles at the memory, admitting that while

not much has changed by way of communication, every pre-

ordered meal at pine garden has been a memorable one!

incidentally, mr. kingsley has recently taken up mandarin

classes.

mr. kingsley can often be found at Club events and wine

dinners where his infectious smile enlivens the atmosphere.

During the years at the Club, he has made many acquaintances,

many of whom have become family friends.

When asked about his experience in the pines thus far, mr.

kingsley replies, “as a periodic traveller and a member of other

clubs as well, the hospitality at the pines is exemplary, truly a

second home.”

mr. kingsley hopes to see more social events targeted at

different demographics or more family tours for better

interaction with other members.

When asked about life’s lessons, mr kingsley reflects “to me,

attitude is more important than aptitude”. “Life”, he says, “has

taught me the importance of holding back judgment and

placing focus on attitude and effort above all else”.

preventive treatments to help you beat wrinkles before they occur. the main

purpose of facial treatment is to increase the skin’s capacity to function

more efficiently thereby keeping your skin in tip-top condition for now and

the future.

The benefits of regular facials include:

• stimulating the blood flow to aid the flow of oxygen and other nutrients to

the skin and its underlying tissue and help in the efficient removal of waste

products.

• Helps with dull, lifeless and congested skin.

• maintains the tone of the underlying muscle therefore preventing lines

from forming.

• Helps the skin’s natural elasticity .

• refining the texture of the skin, making the skin look healthy.

• Contributing to cellular regeneration, which prevents the skin looking aged

before its time.

• giving your skin a more youthful appearance.

• Helping you to relax, stress always shows itself in the face with the muscles

becoming tense and rigid, causing the circulation to slow down, lines can

form this way.

• aids natural protection and prevents the formation of imperfections ie

milia seeds, blemishes.

• Helps with normal functioning of oil & fluid balance, keeping the skin

supple and easing tension lines

• gives you a healthy looking glow.

(Source from www.wealdenhealthandbeauty.co.uk)

Facials also regulate the immune system, aid in detoxification, reduce the

amount of fluid that has built up in the body, and aid in stress relief when

it includes “aromatherapy, lymphatic drainage, exfoliation treatments and

acupuncture.” Lymphatic drainage helps release toxins that have built up

in the body. Facials typically involve massages. these massages aid in blood

circulation. massages during facials also help with lymphatic drainage,

and aid in the relaxation of the facial muscles, which can slow the onset of

wrinkles in the face. Using this technique, which can also reduce puffiness

and sagging in the face can also renew skin cells.

Cai Qing (mandarin) literally means picking the greens. a term

often heard during Chinese New Year, “Cai” in direct translation

means to pick or pluck where “Qing” refers to the colour-green

which is in reference to vegetables like lettuce. the greens

are tied to a piece of string with a Hong bao – a red packet

containing money. the string is hung above the door of the

business or home. the dramatic episode arrives as the lion “eats’’

both, the leaves and the red packet. the lion lies on the floor and

“chews” the leaves while a rolling crescendo drums. the lion then

springs back to action, spitting out the leaves. this is a symbolic

act of blessing by the lion signifying there will be abundance in

the coming year.

Formed 150 million years ago when the super-continent of

gondwanaland began to break apart, seychelles has remained

a sanctuary for unique flora & fauna and primeval forests so

spectacular that it was once believed to be the original site of the

biblical garden of eden.

known to the arab sailors of the 9th Century, seychelles was only

settled as recently as 1770. the islands became a british colony

in 1811 and gained independence in 1976 as a republic within the

Commonwealth. today, seychelles has a multi-party political system

with an executive president as head of state and government.

the population stands at a mere 87,000 and is a harmonious blend

of people with african, european and asian roots, living as one. the

official languages are english, French and Creole and the currency is

the seychelles rupee.

seychelles is host to two UNesCo World Heritage sites: the legendary

vallée de mai where the fabulous Coco-de-mer, the world’s heaviest

nut in the perfect form of a female pelvis, grows on towering,

ancient palms, and aldabra, the planet’s largest raised coral atoll.

among seychelles’ other national icons are its beaches many of

which, such as praslin’s anse Lazio and La Digue’s anse source

D’argent, regularly top the list of the most beautiful on the planet.

mahé alone has some 65 beaches to choose, from many of which

are wonderfully secluded and where the only footprints you will

the seychelles archipelago comprises 115 surreally beautiful islands extending in a gleaming

arc from 4 to 10 degrees south of the equator and between 1600 and 480 km from the east

coast of africa. 41 of these islands represent the most ancient mid-oceanic granitic islands

on earth while 74 are low-lying coral atolls and reef islands.

Page 47: The Pines Lifestyle

come across may be your own. each island has its own special

strand, inevitably lapped by warm sapphire waters that contain so

many species of colourful reef fish that diving, snorkelling or just

swimming becomes a surreal, unforgettable experience.

With so many islands to choose from it is little wonder that another

of seychelles’ outstanding resources lies in the impressive diving

opportunities it offers to novice and aficionado alike. myriad dive

sites promise a marine extravaganza as diverse and vibrant as it

is unique. this living aquarium enjoys comfortable year-round

temperatures of between 24º and 30º Celsius and lies outside the

cyclone belt.

Colourful reef fish, octopus, lobster and turtle flash in the shallows

surrounding the inner islands, while more adventurous dives

offshore include the ‘ennerdale’ wreck and rocks that are the

playground for larger groupers and stingrays. imagine the thrill of

swimming with whale sharks, those gentle giants of the sea that

are regular visitors to seychelles’ waters, or diving the spectacular

coral walls of the outer islands. the dedicated and accredited diving

centres of most hotels and island resorts offer everything from

one-day introductory courses to international diving instructor

certificates.

No account of seychelles’ riches can be considered complete without

mention of its reputation as ‘the islands of love’ and it is little wonder

that that lovers are inspired to take their vows and wed in this

gentle and romantic atmosphere. sensual seychelles creates the

idyllic ambience for an unforgettable wedding day or honeymoon

beneath the swaying palms of discreet island hideaways.

seychelles blossoming tourism industry offers extensive air access,

excellent accommodation ranging from opulent 5–star resorts and

sublime island hideaways to affordable Creole hotels, guesthouses

and self-caterings. the islands boast a healthy tropical climate

and a rich choice of activities such as sailing, diving, fishing, spa &

wellness, golf, hiking and island-hopping to provide the discerning

visitor with a fascinating, once-in a lifetime, holiday experience.

Dear sir,

on 18th November 2011 our international Ladies League (website www.

and food suggestion to fit into our budget.

We were very pleased that pi Wen had appointed anthony and his staff (sam,
