    1. What is a proper?

    A proper textsuch as an antiphon, prayer, or readinghas a

    particular, specific, unique, orproperattachment to a given

    day, feast, or season. For example:

    Entrance antiphon for the 29th

    Sunday in Ordinary Time:

    To you I call; for you will surely heed me, O Lord.(Psalm 17:6, 8)

    Second reading for the 3rd

    Sunday of Advent, Year C:

    Rejoice in the Lord always. I say it again: rejoice! The

    Lord is near. (Philippians 4:4-7)

    Collect from the Memorial of the North American Martyrs

    (October 19): O God, who chose to manifest the blessed

    hope of your eternal Kingdom by the toil of Saints John de

    Brbeuf, Isaac Jogues and their companions.

    Reproaches of Good Friday: My people, what have I done

    to you? Or how have I grieved you? Answer me!

    Quasi-propertexts, such as those from the Common of

    Saints, Sung Responsorial Psalms, or the Simple Gradual.

    2. How does the Church direct their use? The Entrance Chant

    From the General Instruction of the Roman Missal(n.48):

    This chant is sung alternately by the choir and the

    people or similarly by a cantor and the people, or

    entirely by the people, or by the choir alone.

    In the Dioceses of the United States of America there

    are four options for the Entrance Chant:

    (1) the antiphon from the Missal or the antiphon

    with its Psalm from the Graduale Romanum as

    set to music there or in another setting;

    (2) the antiphon and Psalm of the Graduale

    Simplexfor the liturgical time;

    (3) a chant from another collection of Psalms and

    antiphons, approved by the Conference of

    Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop, including Psalms

    arranged in responsorial or metrical forms;

    (4) another liturgical chant that is suited to the

    sacred action, the day, or the time of year,

    similarly approved by the Conference of Bishops

    or the Diocesan Bishop.
