Fort Dale

Players, schemes and oppo-nents change for Fort Dale Academy.

The Eagles’ goal each season does not.

“Every year is the same,” said Fort Dale Academy head coach James “Speed” Sampley. “We prepare every year to win a state championship. That’s our goal. It’s that simple.”

The Eagles accomplished that goal in 2010.

They followed that season with a disappointing 4-7 campaign in 2011 before rebounding to post an 8-4 mark and advance to the second round of the postseason in 2012.

Sampley believes the Eagles can build on last year’s turnaround, but they key will be keeping his players on the fi eld.

While the season has yet to offi cially kick off, the Eagles have already suffered several injuries that could have key players sidelined when Fort Dale opens its season at home against Escambia on Aug. 30.

“Staying healthy is a concern no matter who you are,” Sampley said. “If you get your top two or three players hurt, you’re going to have problems. We’ve already had some kids get hurt, and we’re hoping we can get them healthy and until then we need some of these other kids to step up.”

Sampley said the Eagles will start the season without senior running back/linebacker Chase Whiddon, who broke his foot during a summer league baseball game. The coach said it’s also a possibility the Eagles will start the season without senior linebackers James Burkett and Blake Harris. James Burkett suffered a high ankle sprain in a preseason scrimmage, and Harris has been receiving treatment for an injured acromioclavicular joint.

Sampley said missing those three players is a hit to a team that was already short on experience.

“We don’t have a lot of guys that have played very

much,” he said. “We’re going to have to throw some guys in the fi re and see how they respond. I feel like we have some talent and some guys that can play for us, but we just don’t have the experience we had last year.”

One position the Eagles are not short on experience is at quarterback, where the Eagles return three-year starter Chip Taylor.

However, Taylor will be throwing to a largely inexperi-ence corps of receivers.

“We are very different at wide receiver this year,” Sam-pley said. “We aren’t as athletic as we were a year ago, but these guys can get it done. They just have to play a little smarter because they don’t have the pure athletic ability the other guys did.”

Sampley said John Coleman Poole, James Burkett, Michael Padalino, Joseph Peavy, Stephen Hartley, Price Jones, Jake Gillem and Harrison will all see time at wide receiver.

Defensively, Sampley said he believes the Eagles can become a strong unit if Whiddon, Harrison and James Bur-kett can get on the fi eld and stay on the fi eld.

“Right now it’s like trying to put a puzzle together, and with those guys out, we’re missing some of the key pieces to the puzzle,” he said. “We have a shot to be pretty good, but it’s just going to be a matter of getting the right people in the right places.”

Georgiana

The 2012 season was one filled with tough opponents and even

tougher breaks for the Geor-giana Panthers, who finished the year with just one win.

But the toughest oppo-nents that the Panthers will face in the fall 2013 campaign just might be themselves.

First-year coach Ezell Powell plans to win early and often on the gridiron, but the true battle lies in restoring confidence in each one of his players.

“Having a little success early on and getting people to believe again is very vital to the suc-cess of this program not just for this season, but for our future,” Powell said.

“Not only does this apply to the kids, but for the whole community. To get some success early would help confidence-wise and believ-ing that we can still go out and compete and win ball games when we work hard.”

Most of that confidence will be built in the weight room, as tackling is one of the greatest areas of focus for Powell’s defense.

“We hit with shoulders for so long that we forget to wrap up and use our hands to make tackles, and it gets to the point that it made us sort of suspect on defense at times,” Powell said.

“And we want to eliminate those types of mistakes, and get to where we can tackle a whole lot better and get people to the ground. If we can do that, it helps lead to wins.”

But being physical applies equally to the other side of the ball for the Panthers.

The primary goal for this season is estab-

lishing a solid run game, and then building around it.

“We want to turn ourselves into a more physical football team, in a sense,” Powell said.

“We’re going to use our speed to get to the edge, but we want to be physical at the point of attack.”

Neither of these philosophies would work without Powell’s two essential keys to suc-cess.

They are lessons that don’t necessarily in-volve the X’s and O’s, but rather life lessons that apply just as much off the field as they do on it.

“For one, we have to learn to be disciplined, and that means doing what we’re supposed to do off the field so that it doesn’t affect us with playing time on the field,” Powell said.

“And secondly, it means believing in each other, and that your partner next to you is go-ing to do their job, and that you’re going to do yours. If they learn to do those two things, I think success will start to happen, and other things will start to flourish and take off from there.”

Greenville

There will be few sur-prises as the Greenville Tigers enter into their

third year under the direction of head coach Earnest Hill.

For Hill, even something as slight as a glare is usually enough to convey the proper message to his players.

“They know what to expect from me and I know what to ex-pect from them,” Hill said.

The true surprise lies in the Ti-gers’ revamped offensive scheme that emphasizes the pistol formation.

It’s a new system and a new style, complete with a new coaching staff to support it.

The 2012 campaign brought with it some tough lessons for Hill and his team, not least of all includ-ing the need to change things up from a personnel standpoint.

“Last year, I really didn’t think the coaches that we had fit our system,” Hill said.

“We did some checking and looked at different schools and different colleges and tried to learn from them. With the personnel that we’re bringing back, we thought that the offense we’re running now fits us a little bit more — not so much smash-mouth foot-ball, but more finesse football.”

Seven players will be returning to the Tigers of-fense, including three seniors on the offensive line.

Hill said the revamped offense has been a priority this offseason.

“We’ve put more emphasis on our offense be-cause we didn’t do that well on offense last year,” Hill added. “We really need to be more consistent on offense.”

It was those offensive inconsistencies that Hill at-tributed last season’s struggles despite an offensive

unit that scored more than 26 points per game.On the defensive side of the ball, the Tigers re-

turn just four players from a unit that allowed just 16.8 points per game and held its opponent under 10 points five times last season.

“We’ve got to continue to work on defense,” Hill said.

Since 2006, the Greenville Tigers’ postseason legacy has become one defined by solid performanc-es throughout the regular season that were abruptly cut short in the second round of playoff play.

Last year’s season was no different, with a 38-12 loss to St. Paul.

But while this season’s schedule is packed with difficult opponents and 5A championship contend-ers, it could also serve to prepare the Tigers for playing at a level necessary to compete in postsea-son play.

But like most things for Hill, it’s a bridge he’ll cross when he gets to it.

“We have a really tough region, and we’re matched up in the first round with the region that’s probably been in the championship for the past four or five years,” Hill added.

“When we get past the second round, we can go from there.”

Tigers set to debut revamped offense

McKenize

The 2013 season begins a new era at McKenzie School.

Longtime head coach Miles Brown, the second winningest coach in school history, has moved from the sidelines to the assistant principal’s office. In his place at the helm of the McKen-zie’s program is Josh McLendon.

McLendon, a Butler County na-tive, previously served as an as-sistant coach at Class 5A Green-ville High School.

McLendon’s arrival in McKen-zie doesn’t mean wholesale changes for the Tigers.

The first-year head coach said the on-the-field changes may not be immediately apparent since his approach to the game and running a program is similar to that of Brown, who in seven years as head coach led the Tigers to a 47-27 record, including a pair of 10-win seasons in 2009 and 2010, and a re-gion championship in 2010.

“We’re going to do a lot of the same things,” McLendon said.

“Offensively and defensively, Coach Brown and I share a lot of the same philosophies. I may add a wrinkle or two, but things are going to be very similar to what the guys have done the last several years. Coach Brown has done a great job building a pro-gram at McKenzie. The things they have done here are very impressive, and I just want to try and build on that.”

Like Brown, McLendon favors the spread offense.“We’re still going to be a spread team,” he said.

“I believe in getting the ball to your playmakers in space and letting them make something happen. If we can do that we have a good chance to be suc-cessful.”

Those playmakers include wide receiver Nicarius Peterson, who has already received scholarship of-fers to play football at the University of South Ala-bama and the University of Southern Mississippi.

McLendon said he’s also been impressed with transfer Anthony Grace, who will likely earn the start-ing running back position, which will allow McLendon to move junior Ty Adams to wide receiver.

“We want to have our best 11 guys on the field,” McLendon said.

“Moving Ty to wide receiver gives us another weapon on the field. That’s not to say that he won’t play some running back for us, but right now we want to see what he can do for us at wide receiver and he’s handled the transition well so far.”

Junior Terrance Clemons will also make a posi-tion change.

Clemons is making the move back to quarterback after shifting to wide receiver midway through last season.

McLendon, a self-described offensive coach, said there won’t be many changes in the team’s defensive philosophy either.

“We’re going to fly to the ball,” he said. “We want to have all 11 guys around the ball. If we can do that, I think good things are going to happen.”

Tony Norris will serve as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator.

“We’ve got plenty of talent, and our kids work hard,” McLendon said. “As coaches we just have to put them in a position to make plays. If we do that, I like our chances.”

Brantley

It’s a new era at Brantley High School.

After 14 seasons, 156 wins, 12 region championships and two state championships, Brantley head coach David Lowery stepped away from coaching to become director of operations for the Crenshaw County School system.

Longtime assistant Ashley Kilcrease takes over at the helm of the Brantley program.

Kilcrease served on Low-ery’s staff for all 14 years of the former head coach’s tenure, including serving as the team’s offensive coordinator since 2004.

The Bulldogs’ new head coach made it clear he’s not trying to replace Lowery.

“I’m defi nitely not trying to replace him be-cause you can’t,” Kilcrease said.

Instead, Kilcrease and the Bulldogs are looking at the upcoming season as business as usual.

“I told the guys that our job is to carry on,” he said. “Coach Lowery and all our seniors set the bar very high and left the program in great shape.”

That may be a slight understatement. The Bulldogs capped a perfect 2012 season

by blanking Marion County High School 33-0 in the state championship game.

Brantley scored nearly 49 points a game en route to the title and allowed just more than three points per game. The Bulldogs tallied 10

shutouts in their 15 contests. And while the Bulldogs return 16 seniors

from last season’s team, the lone returning starter on the offensive side of the ball is An-drew Parker.

One of the starters from last year’s squad that will not be back is quarterback Andrew Lowery.

Kilcrease said there is a “great battle” be-tween Brandon Walker, Tre Edwards and Wesley Person Jr. to become the Bulldogs signal caller.

The Brantley offensive line must also fi nd a way to replace Taylor Driggers, who had been the centerpiece of the Bulldogs offensive front.

Kilcrease said Brantley has a big offensive line, but that the unit is inexperience.

The Bulldogs also lost Adrian Howard and Braxton Barnes on defense, but Kilcrease expects linebacker Doug Salter and others to help fi ll the void left by their departure.

With new coach, Bulldogs hope for repeat of 2012

Crenshaw Christian

Crenshaw Christian Academy will often fi nd itself outnumbered this

season. With just 19 players on its ros-

ter, CCA will often play teams with twice as many players in uniform.

But that hasn’t changed the expectations for the Cougars, who enter the season ranked No. 9 in the Alabama Sports Writers Asso-ciation AISA preseason poll.

A season ago, the Cougars posted a 7-5 record and advanced to the second round of the playoffs before being bounced by even-tual state champion Edgewood Academy.

“Our primary focus has been our players,” said fi rst-year head coach Rick Jackson. “We try to get better every day. Our expectations are not going to change. Our goals are to get to the playoffs and win a state championship.”

In order to do that, the Cougars are going to have to stay healthy.

With just 19 players on the roster, nearly every player will have to play offense, defense and special teams. A single injury could create a void on all three units for the Cougars.

Seniors Gavin McKenzie and Alex King are ex-pected to be impact players on both sides of the ball for the Cougars.

McKenzie rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season, and will once again play a key role in the Cougars’ rushing attack. He will also play linebacker for CCA.

King will be charged with creating holes along the offensive front for McKenzie to run through, and will

anchor the defense from his middle linebacker posi-tion.

“We’re looking for (King) to have a huge senior year,” Jackson said.

Sophomore Colin Holloway will join McKenzie in the backfi eld and will also line up at linebacker.

“He’s been working hard to get bigger and stron-ger this summer,” Jackson said.

A question mark remains for the Cougars at quar-terback following the graduation of Steele Jackson.

Senior Trent McGough and sophomore Colton Kelley are the frontrunners to take over as CCA’s signal caller.

“It’s a good battle,” Jackson said. “They are good friends and support each other. It might be that we have a two-quarterback system.”

While Jackson acknowledges that every game is important if the Cougars are going to make a run at the program’s fourth state title, he said the most important game may well be the fi rst game of the season.

“(It) is very important to us in establishing our iden-tity,” he said. “We need to get out of the gate with a win.”

Expectations high for ninth-ranked Cougars

Highland Home

After winning eight games and earning a spot

in the playoffs in 2011, Highland Home High School took a small step back in 2012, win-ning just five games and missing the postseason.

But head coach Tom Pinkston says there’s reason to be optimistic heading into the upcom-ing season.

Pinkston, in his fourth season at the helm of the Flying Squadron program, points to the number of players on his squad’s roster as an indication of which direction the program is heading.

“We have 38 kids on the team,” he said.

“We are committed to the football team, and the kids have really bought into the program.”

The good news for Flying Squadron fans is that one of those players is se-nior running back Lewis Johnson.

Johnson, who has rushed for more than 2,000 yards in the last two sea-sons, will once again be a focal point of the Highland Home offense.

Senior Stacee Williams is expected to lead the Highland Home defense

from his linebacker position. According to Pinkston, the Flying

Squadron will be tested early and often in 2013.

Highland Home’s schedule is high-lighted by contests with in-county ri-vals Brantley High School and Luverne High School.

The Flying Squadron’s matchup with Luverne is also a region showdown.

“We will have our hands full all year long,” he said.

“Luverne is a big one. When we play it’s an all out war, but we respect them.”

Squadron remain optimistic for 2013 season

Luverne

Luverne High School has called on a fa-miliar face to lead

the Tigers back to the top of Class 2A.

When the Tigers take the field this season, Mike Dubose will once again be prowling the sidelines.

Dubose, who has been the defensive line coach at Chattanooga, Southern Miss, Alabama and for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, served as head coach at Luverne in 2003 and 2004, leading the Tigers to 20-7 regular season record, 5-2 playoff record and 13-1 re-gion record.

Luverne was the Class 2A state runner-up in 2003.

He was also the head coach of the University of Alabama from 1997 to 2000.

Dubose knows that fans want Lu-verne have an “it program” once again. He also believes his squad had the tal-ent to build on the programs recent suc-cess, which includes 32 wins in the last four seasons.

“I do believe we will be a good football team,” he said. “When, I don’t know, but I do think we will be. We need to stay healthy.”

The Tigers’ hopes of making a playoff run should be bolstered by the return of

quarterback Kenterius Womack. The senior made the move from wide

receiver to quarterback last season. He’ll be throwing to a talented corps

of wide receivers that includes Quez Watkins, Quindarius Thagard and Mar-cel McMillian.

Defensively, Dubose is hoping to im-prove on a season in which the Tigers allowed more than 23 points a game.

“I’m a defensive-minded guy,” he said. Junior Treyvon Bodiford, a three-year

starter, is once again expected to play a significant role on the Tigers’ defense.

Calhoun

Calhoun School posted three wins last season.

And while three wins may not sound like a lot to some, it’s proof that third-year head coach Bill Williamson has the Tigers moving in the right direction.

The Tigers’ 3-7 record last season is their best season since 1999 when they posted a 6-6 mark and advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

With eight returning starters from last season’s squad and 11 seniors on the ros-ter, there’s reason to be optimistic heading into the 2013 campaign.

“We’ve got an outstanding senior class,” Williamson said.

That class includes quarterback Jamine Jordan, flanker Demarcus Jackson, spilt end Devontae McMeans, fullback Quincy Robinson, special teams Devosky Mc-Means, defensive tackle Jamichael Jones, tackle Ty Morgan, tightend Jeffery Moss, tackle Carlton Patterson and defensive end John Jenkins.

Despite having his most experienced team during his tenure at Calhoun, Wil-liamson isn’t ready to start predicting wins, losses or a possible trip to the postseason.

Instead, he and his players will take a more shortsighted view of the season.

“I’m not making predictions, we’re just going to practice hard every day and take

one game at a time and see what happens,” Williamson said.

The Tigers’ hopes for success will largely depend on continuing to improve on de-fense.

In 2011, the Tigers yielded 40 or more points four times. They trimmed that num-ber to three last season.

In an effort to continue to shore up its de-fense, Calhoun will toss multiple looks at its opponents this season, including 3-4, 4-5 and 4-4 fronts.

Williamson said he will determine which defense to run based on each week’s op-ponent.

Offensively, the Tigers scored 18.8 points per game last season, up from 14.4 points in 2011.

Like the defense, the Calhoun offense will show multiple looks to its opponents.

According to Williamson, the Tigers will run the I-formation, the Pro I and the spread.

Lowndes

Lowndes Academy’s toughest opponent this season may be

the injury bug. With just 22 players on the

roster, head coach Matt Mar-shall said the key to success for the Rebels is keeping ev-eryone healthy.

“If we can stay healthy, I feel like we can be very com-petitive within the region,” Marshall said. “And as far as the entire schedule, we can have a pretty suc-cessful season.”

Marshall, who is in his second year at the helm of the Lowndes program, said the Rebels’ goal this season is to build on last year’s 5-5 season that was capped by wins over Jackson Academy and Morgan Academy in the last two games of the year.

“We’d like to improve on our record, and get into the playoffs this year,” Marshall said. “We’re trying to always get better. We don’t want to take a step back.”

One of the areas the Rebels are looking to improve in is defense.

Last season, Lowndes allowed more than 25 points per game, and yielded more than 40 points in four contests.

This season, the Rebels will show a couple of different looks on defense, according to Marshall.

“We mix in a three-man with a five-man front,” he said. “Our base defense is a three-three stack.”

Defensively, Marshall expects the Rebels to be led by senior linebacker Garrett Headley.

“We’re expecting some huge things from

him,” Marshall said. “He’s already received some small college offers.”

Offensively, the Rebels will run a spread of-fense, but Marshall said that doesn’t mean his team will be putting the ball in the air every play.

“We’re not going to throw it 40 times a game,” he said. “We like to be balanced, but do like to spread the field a little bit and put our playmakers in space.”

The Lowndes offense will be under the di-rection of returning starter Cody Harrell.

Marshall said the 5-foot-6, 154-pound junior is much more confident under center and it’s shown during preseason practices.

“I really look for him to have a big year,” Marshall said. “I can already tell at practice that a lot of the throws are coming easier to him. He’s able to direct traffic and be more of a leader back there.”

Marshall, who played at Lowndes Academy and was part of the coaching staff of the 1997 state championship team, is hoping this sea-son’s squad can restore some of the luster to the Rebels’ proud tradition.

He said that starts with making the playoffs.
