El Greco• 1541 – 1614

• Primarily a painter, but also worked as a sculptor and an architect.

• Studied under Titian.

• Many paintings were done in the 16th century Venetian Renaissance style, depicting religious figures and scenes.

El Greco, Cont.El Greco was born in Crete and worked in Italy before moving to Spain in about 1577. His full name was Doménikos Theotokópoulos, and he

usually signed his paintings in Greek letters with this name. He is, however, generally known as El Greco (“the Greek”). He died in Toledo in 1614.

• A realist painter during the Baroque Period.

• Worked as a court painter in Madrid

• He painted landscapes, mythological and religious subjects, and scenes from common life (such as tavern scenes).

Diego Rodríguez de Silva Velázquez was born in Seville, Spain. He was a portrait painter who worked in the court of King Phillip IV. He was

referred to as the "noblest and most commanding man among the artists of his

country.”

• A Spanish court painter, like Velázquez.

• Many paintings depicted the French invasion of Spain.

Francisco Goya was best known as a portraitist in his time, but he is now better known for his

paintings depicting the violent French occupation of Spain during the Napoleonic

Wars.

Pablo Picasso

• 1881-1973

• A painter and sculptor

• Along with Georges Braque, founded the style of painting known as Cubism.

• Went through several styles of painting include the Blue Period, the Rose Period, and the Cubist Period.

Pablo Picasso, Cont.

Although Picasso spent a good amount of his life in France, he often used imagery from his

native country, Spain (bullfights were a favorite subject). One of his most famous paintings,

Guernica, was inspired by the bombing of the town during the Spanish Civil War.

• A painter, sculptor, and ceramist

• Born outside of Barcelona, Spain

• An abstract artist

Joan Miró, Cont.Joan Miró is known for combining abstraction with

surrealism. He traveled to France in 1919 where he associated with many artists including Picasso. It was there that he become known as an artist. He returned to Spain in 1940, where he lived and

worked until his death.

• 1904-1989

• Studied art in Madrid and Barcelona, Spain.

• Painter, sculptor, experimental filmmaker, sometimes writer

• Surrealist artist

Salvador Dalí studied art in Spain. He traveled to France in 1928, where he met Pablo

Picasso and Joan Miró. He is known for his eccentric personality, and is considered to be

the greatest artist of the Surrealist movement.
