The Long, Winding Road to the Kingdom: Father Eric’s Vocation Story It was about 5 minutes till 11:00 a.m. when a pair of hands was imposed upon my head. The person to whom the hands belonged was silent and his eyes were closed. Then about 30 to 40 more pairs of hands followed suit. My eyes were shut as I was trying not to be con-scious of the fact that I had been kneeling for more than ive minutes straight. Then the per-son who owned those irst set of hands on my head began to say a few words, like a chant of magic words. Once over, I stood up and was never the same again. I turned towards the peo-ple and realized: the person who went down on that marble loor 15 minutes earlier was not the same person who stood up. The son who came down to lay prostrate on the loor had ris-en up as a Father. I will never forget that day, May 26, 2012. Yesterday, I celebrated the beginning of the 5th year of my priestly ministry. It has been a roller coaster ride of never ending surprises and unexpected developments. To be honest I was not really surprised, ever since I was a little boy, this has always been the story of my life. The irst seeds of my vocation began all the way back in kindergarten. I attended a Catholic school run by wonderful and dedicated sisters. They encouraged the boys in the class to serve as communion helpers and altar servers at our local parishes. I took great in-terest in it; so much so, that I would even serve at daily masses. AsfarasIcanremember,I

would comehome frommass or school, Iwoulddressmyselfup inawhite sheetand “playMass”athomewithapieceofroundcrackerandCoca-Colaasmy“breadandwine”.I will also never forget the pastor of the cathedral where I would serve, how he would encourage me to be open to becoming a priest. Sadly, this journey took a different direction when I began elementary and secondary school (1st—12th grade). I attended a private school. Religion was taught only as a catechet-ical class and no offense, it was boring. Rather, I found myself joining a bible class led by for-eign missionaries (not Catholics), because it was interesting and attractive. My interest in the priesthood waned. By the time I was in senior high, I lost all drive towards discerning the priestly life. Evidence of this was when I was sitting down with my mother to talk about col-lege education, I rejected her suggestion for me to consider entering seminary. This was how disinterested I was. By that time as well, going to church was a chore or an obligation born out of fear of the repercussions that would be imposed upon me by my mother. My father did not encourage it either, he was not Catholic. Going to college did not help my faith at all. In fact, being in college accelerated my de-cline to faithlessness. At that time I was trying to look for meaning in my life, for sensible things. I was also going to college in a different city, totally away from the prying eyes of my parents. I was like a bird that got set free from its birdcage. For the next three years being in college would be considered the wildest and darkest times of my life. I did not do drugs, thank goodness, because I still had that reverential fear

continued... of my parents. But I could say that drugs and alcoholism would have been one step away from where I was in my state of life. I was getting near the bottom of the barrel. Onethingwasde initelysure:IentirelygaveupmyfaithandevenlefttheCatholicChurchtobepartofsomeothernon-denominationalcommunity. When my parents discovered what was happening, they were livid! My dad took it upon himself to force me to come home and threatened to disown me if I didn’t. So with great re-luctance and with anger and rebelliousness in my heart, I came home. My mother would try to get me to come to Sunday Mass but I would either have excuses or would pretend not to be able to hear her. As my mother just patiently waited, I kept to my own rebellious world, until the day that my dad dropped the bomb that changed my perspective. My dad said, ever since the day they found out about my life in college, my mom had been suffering in silence. She suffered so much emotionally and physically that it inally had taken its toll on her. It was then my father made the decision to force me to come home. I will not discuss here the implications of that story and the “what-ifs”. I was so guilt-ridden that I took it upon myself to make a complete turnaround. This was when God looked down from heaven at me and said, “it is time”. I started going back to Sunday Mass at irst to please my mother so that she would be happy. I also went to the local college that was run by a male religious order of priests and brothers. When I was at that local college, I began to see their lifestyles—they were so hum-ble, unassuming, joyful and compassionate. I began to notice a stir in my heart. That stir turned into an attraction for the life of these men, which then led me to ask questions about vocations. While this was happening, going to Sunday mass also started to evoke some meaning in me. I found myself being inspired by the rituals of the Mass and the beauty of the liturgy. One day, these religious men, the SVD’s (or the Divine Word Missionaries), offered a come-and-see weekend. I attended and it con irmed what was on my heart—that the only way I could ind the meaning of my life was through serving God…and I saw that serving God for me was through the priesthood. To the great shock of my parents, especially my mother, I applied to join the SVD’s and enter their seminary. I was accepted in 2003. In 2005, I left the SVD’s not because of any-thing negative but because I felt that my priesthood was through service in the parishes; that is, the diocesan life. Later that year, Fr. Mark Toups, then vocations director, came to the Philippines to recruit potential seminarians who would be formed to serve the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux. I arrived at the airport in New Orleans on August 31, 2006. The rest is, as they say, history.

ST. LUKE COMMUNITY CENTER/300 EAST 11TH STREET, THIBODAUX, LA 70301

PLEASE RSVP BY MONDAY, June 12, 2017 985-446-0487

The Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux will joyfully celebrate its 40th Anniversary on Pentecost Sunday, June 4, 2017, at 2:00 PM at the Cathe-dral of St. Francis de Sales. Choir members from around the diocese are invited to sing in the choir for this momentous historical mile-stone in our diocese. Required rehearsals will be held at the Cathedral on May 23 and 30, 2017 at 6:30 PM at the Cathedral. We look for-ward to your offering the gift of your musical talent for this Mass. History of the Diocese: The Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux’s colorful history dates far beyond 1977 when it was officially established. The first record of explora on in the area was in 1699, when the French explorer and colonizer Bienville explored Bayou Lafourche, visi ng the Washa Indian Villages. The Houma-Thibodaux-Morgan City area was se led by peoples of various cultures over the centuries: na ve Houmas Indians; French from Nova Sco a and France, Germans from the Rhineland and Swit-zerland; Spanish and Anglo-Saxon immigrants; slaves of sugar planta ons; Italian families from southern Italy; and Vietnamese refugees. As all of these ethnic groups se led along the bayous, they established churches and found livelihoods in the sugar cane, seafood and oil in-dustries. Father Charles M. Menard was appointed vicar of St. Joseph’s parish in 1842. This was the beginning of the extensive missionary work to be done by “Pére Menard,” who came to be known as “The Apostle of Bay-ou Lafourche.” He would found the majority of the church parishes which comprise the diocese today. Founding: The Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux was estab-lished by Pope Paul VI in March, 1977, and the Most Rev-erend Warren L. Boudreaux, Bishop of Beaumont, TX, was named the first Ordinary. He was installed on June 5, 1977. The diocese was formed with 36 church parishes and 14 Catholic schools already in place.
