Yes, logically you are right; but this may be a ‘success’ that will really not add value to both family and country in the long run. Let us imagine someone who starts a business employing about 50 people; he exploits people only for his gain, his success does not result in happiness for many people. The Real Success

All of us want to be successful in life. Success is different for each one of us. When we achieve what

we want, we call it success. In general, there are certain things that are commonly considered as

success. Becoming famous, becoming rich are generally considered as being successful. Have you

noticed that when we think of being successful…..we generally do not think about others? Any

success that arises out of selfishness cannot be success in the true sense.

I am sure many of you may feel - why should I think about anyone other than my family members to

be successful? Yes, logically you are right; but this may be a ‘success’ that will really not add value

to both family and country in the long run. Let us imagine someone who starts a business employing

about 50 people; he exploits people only for his gain, his success does not result in happiness for

many people. There are cases of big companies exploiting the consumers for their personal

benefits; this over a period of time brings unhappiness to others though the company may feel very

successful. In fact, this is what is precisely happening in this world now. Look at the way the oil

prices have been increasing, the way land prices and prices of essential commodities have been

soaring. While one part of the population is gaining, a majority is losing. This begets disharmony and

the troubles begin.

Can there be a success that can give happiness to us, family, society etc.? Yes, such a success arises out of total lack

of selfishness. We often see organizations where a few people work hard and the others enjoy the benefits of their hard

work. Such a system will not work for a long time. Such rulers have been over thrown;

such organizations have been closed down. Getting back to selfishness, can someone

become rich or famous without being selfish? We need to look at Gandhiji, Einstein and

many such people. In the examples cited, Gandhi did not want to become rich; but had

he decided he could have. He became rich in a different sense. The success of these

people is based on contributions to the society and total lack of selfishness.

Is it possible for us to become successful without selfishness and be happy? Yes. For

this, we should be clear about what we want to achieve; not in terms of money or

material achievements, but in terms of original contributions or value adds to profession,

society etc. Once this success is achieved, it spreads and all the material successes

follow.

For real success, start working for the benefit of others!

Meditation: There are five meditations: The first is meditation of love, in which you must so adjust your heart, that you long for the welfare of all beings, including the happiness of your enemies.

The second is the meditation of pity, in which you think of all beings in distress, vividly representing their sorrows and anxieties in your imagination so as to arouse a deep compassion for them in your soul.

The third is the meditation of joy, in which you think of the prosperity of others and rejoice at their rejoicing.

The fourth is the meditation on impurity, in which you consider the evil consequences of corruption, the effects of sin and diseases, how trivial often are the pleasures of the moment and how fatal its consequences!

The only ones amongst you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve

Transitions are difficult but very important

Each sentence in your document should follow smoothly from the preceding sentence, and each paragraph should follow smoothly from the preceding paragraph. The world is arguably an unstructured jumble of ideas, but anything that you expect the reader to read from start to finish needs to be a linear progression along one single path. Transition words and phrases are what makes it possible for a reader to follow you easily as you explore the various ideas in your paper. Without good

transitions, the reader will end up backtracking repeatedly, which will often cause your point to be lost or your paper to be tossed aside altogether.

One clue that your writing needs better transitions is if you find that you can cut and paste paragraphs from one section to another without doing substantial rewriting of how the paragraph begins and ends. If making such rearrangements is easy, then you have not been linking your paragraphs into a coherent narrative that reads well from start to finish.

In practice, making smooth transitions is very difficult. Learning to do it takes a lot of practice at first, and actually making the transitions smooth takes a lot of effort every time you write or revise something. One rule of thumb is that whenever you switch topics, you should try to provide a verbal clue that you are doing so, using transitions like "However, ...", "As a result, ...", "For comparison, ", etc.

If you notice that you have to add these words between most of your sentences, not just the paragraphs, then you are bouncing around too much. In that case you need to reorganize your document to group related thoughts together, switching topics only when necessary. Once the organization is good, all you can do is read and reread what you write, rewording it until each new item follows easily from those before it.

Write what you mean, mean what you write

Speakers use many informal, colloquial phrases in casual conversation, usually intending to convey meanings other than what the words literally indicate. For instance, we often speak informally of "going the extra mile", "at the end of the day", "hard facts", things being "crystal clear" or "pretty" convincing, someone "sticking to" a topic, readers being "turned off", something "really" being the case, etc. Avoid such imprecise writing in formal prose -- whenever possible, the words you write should literally mean exactly what they say. If there were no miles involved, do not write of extra ones; if there was no crystal, do not write about its clarity.

Among other benefits, avoiding such informal language will ensure that your meaning is obvious even to those who have not learned the currently popular idioms, such as those for whom English is a second language and those who might read your writing years from now or in another part of the world. Formal writing should be clear to as many people as possible, and its meaning should not depend on the whims of your local dialect of English. It is a permanent and public record of your ideas, and should mean precisely what you have written.

Avoid redundancy

Unfortunately, specifying minimum page requirements encourages redundancy, but please try to avoid that temptation. When two words will do, there is no need to use twenty. Whenever you finish a sentence or paragraph, read over it to see if any words or sentences can be eliminated -- often your point will get much stronger when you do so. In the business community, your ability to write concisely is far more important than your ability to fill up a page with text.

Academic courses specify page minimums to ensure that you write an essay of the appropriate depth, not to test whether you can say the same thing a dozen different ways just to fill up space. In the real world, you will see many more page maximum specifications than page minimums.

Fear!!! A word which conjures up frightening or nervous images or

feelings in an Individual. It is an emotional response to both tangible

and intangible dangers.

Page 3

Glory is fleeting, but obscurity is forever.

Fear Factor

Sweaty Palms, Butterflies in the tummy, feeling tongue tied! Sounds familiar? Something we have experienced at some point or the other in our lives. What is the underlying cause for this?

Fear! A word which conjures up frightening or nervous images /feelings in an Individual. It is an emotional response to both tangible and intangible dangers. Fear of speaking in a group, fear of the boss, fear of the unknown, fear of darkness, fear of death, childhood fears are some common forms which individuals experience. Does this characterize the personality of an Individual? Is it that these may be inherent in us or we develop these fears within us based on situations? Something to ponder about!

Childhood fears are very tangible and it looms large because of the threats involved (caused most often by adults) and it manifests as nightmares. As we grow older, these fears are replaced by other bigger fears which are internal, created deep within us due to what we perceive as an inability. This sets forth a chain reaction that reveals itself in all our day to day activities both at home and at work – in all our relationships.

What causes this fear particularly with regard at work? I personally feel fears manifest due to a need or a lack of something in an individual. I have listed a few needs/lacks which I feel are important in identifying the cause.

Knowledge – When an individual lacks the knowledge required in his field of work, it evokes a fear within him because he is so unsure of himself, and cannot confidently move forward in his work (lack of Self-confidence). Eg. Doing a presentation.

Communication – A person may have sufficient knowledge but lacks the ability to communicate or express himself boldly to an individual or a group. This could be inherent or it could be a simple problem of expressing himself in a particular language.

Stress – Stress affects work adversely and this can cause a fear as we become ill equipped to handle the events of a stressful situation.

Presumptions/Assumptions – This is a convenient excuse to postpone facing a fear. For instance, if a person has to meet his boss to ask for a salary hike, lack of confidence can make him assume that his boss is busy thus postponing temporarily a meeting which could be to his advantage! It is only a tactic to postpone facing the fear.

Reaction – A low self–esteem makes a person fear the reaction that his action or words could evoke and hence chooses the easy way out.. keep mum!

Fear is not a natural state. It makes a person feel inadequate, To quote Marie Curie, “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood”. So how can we tackle this fear?

1. Recognizing/identifying and understanding the need or lack within us. This helps in acceptance of that fear.

2. Analyzing the reason, facing the fear and adopting measures to overcome it.

3. Talking about it to someone and seeking help.

4. To develop the ability to identify mistakes as a learning experience

5. Exercise, relaxation techniques like deep breathing, Meditation

6. And finally using what God has given us in plenty - reasoning and common sense with which we can overcome the mountains of obstacles in our mind!

Winner vs Loser

 When a winner makes a mistake, he/she says, "I was wrong,"

When a loser makes a mistake, he/she says, "It wasn't my fault."

 A winner goes through a problem;

A loser goes around it, and never gets past it.

 A winner makes commitments;

A loser makes promises.

 A winner says, "I'm good, but not as good as I ought to be,"

A loser says, "I'm not as bad as a lot of other people."

 A winner listens;

A loser just waits until it's his/her turn to talk.

 A winner respects those who are superior to him/her and tries to learn something from them.

A loser resents those who are superior to him/her and tries to find chinks in their armor.

 A winner feels responsible for more than his/her job;

A loser says, "I only work here."

 A winner says, "There ought to be a better way to do it;"

A loser says, "That's the way it's always been done here. “ Manikantan P
