The Kea crossing, which enables volunteers to stop traffic using barrier arms to allow the children to cross the road, began operating for the first time this week.

The crossing has been the result of some hard work by two Rolleston School parents, Samantha Montford and Nicole Reid over the last year.

“One of the issues was we weren’t able to stop traffic,” Samantha Montford said.

At 9.15am on Thursday, October 15, New Zealanders will have the chance to practise what they would do in a real earthquake.

Shakeout was first held in 2012 and 1.3 million New Zealanders took part in the drill. The 2015 exercise will be the second time Shakeout has been held in New Zealand.

Selwyn District Council's emergency management officer Ryan O'Rourke said over 6,500 Selwyn children and residents have signed up to be part

of Shakeout. “We would like to encourage all

Selwyn residents and businesses to be part of this important earthquake drill."

Mr O'Rourke said earthquakes are being felt less often than in the months immediately following the Canterbury Earthquakes of 2010 and 2011.

“However, it is still important for people and workplaces in Selwyn to practise their response in an earthquake so they can feel confident everyone knows what to do.”

Selwyn MP Amy Adams has named Tim Marshall of Broadfield as her Youth MP for 2016, while Speaker of the House Rt Hon David Carter, who himself lives in the Selwyn electorate, has chosen Lexi Sutherland of Kirwee as the Youth Speaker of the House.

Tim attends St Thomas of Canterbury College while Lexi is a student at Darfield High School.

They were chosen from among six finalists by a panel including Ms Adams, Mr Carter and Rolleston-based Police Sergeant Dan Harker.

The finalists had to give a five-minute presentation on local and national issues and then answer a question from each member of the judging panel.

Ms Adams praised all of the finalists for having the courage to put themselves forward and present their opinions to the panel.

“I was very impressed with all of the finalists and would have been proud to have any one of them as my representative,” Ms Adams said.

Janet received the annual event’s top award, the Malvern Community Arts Council’s Premier Award, for her embroidery work entitled ‘The Watermill’, while husband Michael was awarded one of Artweek’s top prizes, the New Image Hair Award, for his acrylic painting ‘Watersmeet’.

Janet said she was shocked at receiving the top prize for her work, which was described by the judge, University of Canterbury art history lecturer Dr Rosie Ibbotson, as ‘evocative’.

She said she began embroidering just over 20 years ago but it was the first time she had entered her work into a show of this kind after being encouraged to do so by her husband Michael, who had entered work into last year’s Artweek and recently exhibited at the Selwyn Gallery in Darfield.

Malvern Community Arts Council’s Artweek convenor Meg Morten said Mrs Ballard’s work reflected how far the arts and crafts genre was being accepted by the wider art community.

Family affair for Artweek award winnersby Kent Caddick

Christchurch couple Janet and Michael Ballard had much to celebrate after the opening of Darfield Artweek on Friday night.

“It shows us how the craft movement has been transferred into the art world.”

Mrs Morten said she was delighted how the exhibition’s opening went and the quality of this year’s exhibitors.

“While there were slightly less exhibitors this year it enabled us to present the works in a better light.

“Since the Canterbury earthquakes the number of venues for artists to display their works has dropped significantly which means Darfield Artweek continues to be a strong force in the region’s arts community.”

Mrs Morten said once again all the Artweek volunteers had done an outstanding job in running the event and the arts council was extremely grateful to the Selwyn business community for their support.

Opening night award winners were: MCAC Premier Award - Janet Bollard (Christchurch); Malvern Business Award – Chun Ki Choi (Christchurch); Friends of MCAC Award - Eun Sook Kim (Christchurch); Bayleys Jo MacIntosh Award – Mehrdad

The Spring Fair, which is the biggest fundraiser for the Hororata Parish, will be held at the Hororata Domain on October 26.

“We have spent time looking at what makes a fair a great day out for all the family and then we have looked at what we can add to the Spring Fair,” Hororata Parish Spring Fair chairperson Lucy Cookson said.

“We are bringing back the traditional children’s races like sack races, egg and spoon races and gumboot throwing. There will be heaps of great prizes and lots of fun to be had.”

The fair features a large number of market stalls offering a range of products and produce.

which fills the entire stables at the Hororata Domain.

A favourite of the day is the Country Auction where people are sure to grab themselves a bargain.

“This year we have arranged for a number of young performers to provide entertainment at the event. This will be great for the fair visitors but also gives some people with amazing talent in our community the chance to showcase what they can do.”

Organisers have their fingers crossed for some fine weather.

“Last year we had a fabulous turn out despite being a very wet day,” Ms Cookson said.

“The Hororata Domain is a great venue for all weather as there is plenty

of shelter for rain or sun. Hopefully the rain stays away this year but no matter the weather the event will still go ahead.”

She said while the Spring Fair is the biggest fundraiser for the Hororata Parish it is more than that.

“We see it as a day where family and friends have an enjoyable day, it is about bringing the community together. With free entry the Spring Fair provides an inexpensive day out for families in a safe and welcoming setting.”

The Hororata Parish Spring Fair will be held at the Hororata Domain, Labour Day (October 26) from 9.30am to 2.00pm, and entry is free.

Oceans cover almost three quarters of the world’s surface. We all need do our bit to look after them, and to preserve them.

Pollution and over-fishing are placing increased pressure on the sea. It is home to half of the world’s species, yet currently only two per cent of it is protected.

Prime Minister John Key recently announced the creation of a 620,000 square-kilometre ocean sanctuary in the Kermadec region, one of the most pristine and unique environments on earth. This region is home to whales, seabirds, dolphins, turtles, and many species of marine life that are not found anywhere else.

Situated 1000 kilometres northeast of New Zealand, halfway between the Bay of Plenty and Tonga, the Kermadecs contain the world’s longest underwater volcanic arc and the second-deepest ocean trench in the world.

The Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary will extend out to the 200 nautical mile limit of New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone, and will establish a

Protecting our oceans

fully-protected, ‘no take’ zone where all mining, and all fishing is off limits.

This initiative is the first time an area of our Exclusive Economic Zone will be fully protected and reinforces New Zealand’s leadership in sustainable management of the marine environment.

New Zealand has made good progress in protecting its territorial seas. In the last year, 10 new marine reserves have been created in Akaroa, the sub-Antarctics, Kaikoura and off the West Coast, bringing our grand total of marine reserves to 44.

The Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary will cover more than 35 times the combined area of our current marine reserves.

This new sanctuary is part of the Government’s “Bluegreen” approach of balancing environmental protection with economic development.

We need to use our ocean resources for jobs and exports with industries like fishing, aquaculture, minerals and energy, but we also need to set aside special areas where nature comes first and marine life is fully protected.

Repairs to 13 of the 19 cemeteries maintained by Selwyn District Council have been completed, with work on the five remaining cemeteries needing repairs scheduled to be finished by June 2016.

Many headstones were damaged in the magnitude 7.1 September 2010 earthquake, which was centred near Charing Cross, about 10km from Darfield. Some further damage also occurred as a result of the February 2011 earthquake.

Council's earthquake recovery manager Douglas Marshall said the council has been working through a staged programme of cemetery repairs to fix damaged headstones.

"The amount of damage which occurred in cemeteries within Selwyn was quite varied and sites which suffered the most damage were repaired first.

"The cemeteries which suffered the most damage were those with many older graves with ornate monuments like Lincoln and the sites close to the September 2010 fault line like Greendale."

The cemeteries where repair work

Cemetery repairs near completionRepairs to most cemetery headstones damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes are nearing completion in Selwyn.

is yet to be undertaken are South Malvern, Kimberley, Waddington, and Hororata. These repairs are planned to be complete by June next year. Work is currently underway on headstone repairs at Kowai Pass cemetery.

Headstone repair work is being completed by Decra Art. The repair technique being used involves mateen rods being installed which provide a secure foundation for headstones and monuments.

"The rods are extremely strong and after the repairs have been finished the headstones and monuments are actually stronger than a newly built headstone is required to be so they should be quite resilient in any future earthquake," Mr Marshall said.

Damage to cemeteries was part of the wider infrastructure damage that occurred in the earthquakes as roads, bridges, water and wastewater and community buildings also needed to be fixed. The majority of infrastructure repairs in Selwyn have now been completed with all roads, bridges, water and waste water repairs finished and most community buildings fixed.

Headstones repair work has been carried out on the Ellesmere Catholic cemetery.

The Darfield Vege Co-op has been set up by local woman Tania Campen who had previously been involved in a similar co-op in Dunedin.

“I wanted people to be able to eat healthily but also make it affordable,” Ms Campen said.

“Anyone can join the co-op there are no criteria and people can place orders not just for themselves but also for neighbours and relatives.”

She said the idea began when she was talking to friends about the idea on Facebook.

Ms Campen contacted the Rev Craig Dixon who has been running a similar programme called ‘Food Together’ from a base in the Christchurch suburb of St Albans for several years.

“We discussed the concept and he agreed to help out.

“The vegetables and fruit are bought from a Christchurch produce

“The ability to by in bulk enables us to keep the price affordable.”

The orders of fruit and vegetables cost members of the group $13 but Ms Campen said the value of the packages is in excess of $25 if they were bought through normal retail outlets.

The vegetable and fruit packages are currently put together in Christchurch and delivered out to Darfield on a Wednesday.

“We have received 29 orders for our first week so we are pleased with that. It may get to the stage if we have enough people wanting to join in that we get the produce delivered in bulk to Darfield and package it up here.”

People wanting to volunteer to help or join the co-op should go the group’s Facebook page, Darfield Vege Co-op, or call Tania Campen on 021 134 0474.

Four-month-old Caleb eyes up the vegetables while young Alexa (18 months) enjoys the fruits of mother Tania Campen’s vege co-op package.

The event, which is held every two years, raises money for members of the West Melton Scout group to travel to various scouting activities including camps and training courses as well as equipment.

Items from quality clothing and books, to furniture and sports gear, as well as toys, plants and tools will be offered for sale.

This year’s event has been organised by West Melton residents Shona Card and Amanda Sharpe.

Mrs Card said they have been blown away by the generosity of the community.

“I think this year we have had more

“It is not just the amount of goods we have to sell but also the quality of it. We can still take more items and we have another drop off day this Saturday at the West Melton Community Hall between 10am and 4pm.”

Mrs Card said this year they have also arranged for mobile EFTPOS so people can use their cards as well as cash to buy items.

Working hard for our communities

AMY ADAMSMP FOR SELWYN

The system, designed by business IT consultancy Koorb and built on Microsoft’s Dynamics CRM Online platform, aims to bring the University’s student applications processes into line with best current technology options, moving the enrolment system from a paper-based to a digital environment.

Jeremy Baker, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of International and Business Development at Lincoln University, said the university was excited to be able to offer the improved service to potential students.

“MyLinc makes it easy for students to apply to study, for accommodation and for scholarships all using a single portal,

Online enrolment at LincolnA new online system called MyLinc is set to streamline the enrolment process for students and staff at Lincoln University.

and to be able to monitor progress with those applications.

“We want to make the process of choosing to study at Lincoln as simple and student-centric as possible, and we believe the MyLinc portal is a great step in that direction.”

Director of student administration, Rachele Allan said they aim to make administration at Lincoln University to be as simple and hassle free as possible so that students can get on with their study.

“Our long term vision is for MyLinc to span the entire student journey from applicant to graduate and alumni,” says Ms Allan.

Lincoln University student Laura Adams using the new MyLinc enrolment system.

That’s according to the chief executive of the Community Energy Action Charitable Trust (CEA), Kirwee’s Caroline Shone.

Ms Shone said the result of the complacency is cold homes, high power bills and sick householders, with a misplaced ‘she’ll be right’ and ‘toughen up’ attitude often preventing homeowners from taking action.

“Good insulation is not a luxury. Shelter from the elements is a basic human right, and I believe in the South Island a house without sufficient insulation is not an adequate shelter.

“When the Building Code first introduced insulation standards in 1978, there was only one standard for the whole country.

“That standard may have been sufficient for the Auckland, it was woefully inadequate for the much colder South Island climate.

“Over the years the level of insulation required in new homes

Insulation complacency in SelwynThousands of Selwyn homeowners are lulled into complacency thinking their homes are insulated where in fact the batts in the ceiling do very little to keep the heat in.

around Canterbury has increased substantially but older houses built before that time were left to top up the insulation themselves.”

Ms Shone said another issue is the quality of insulation batts installed in the early days.

“Some homes that were insulated 30 years ago may as well have no insulation due to compaction. Insulation installed today is of much better quality, much less prone to compaction and most brands are guaranteed for 50 years.”

Ms Shone said free insulation checks are available for all householders.

“Free and subsidised insulation is also available for those on a low income with vulnerable occupants in the house, so cost should not be a barrier.”

Selwyn residents concerned about the level of their home’s insulation can contact CEA on 0800 GET WARM for more information.

CEA chief executive Caroline Shone says some Selwyn residents may be complacent over poor insulation.

“This is step one in a multi-phase project that will eventually incorporate functions like enrolments, checking exam results and the graduation processes.”

Student connection services manager Siobhan Nettle said the single portal system has also increased applicants’ awareness of Lincoln funded scholarships, which now appear alongside study and accommodation information.

Some people are afraid of the idea of attracting bees to their property, but retired veterinarian Dr Marjorie Orr says New Zealand bees are not usually aggressive unless provoked.

“There is no need to fear bees if they are managed by a registered beekeeper and their hives are undisturbed. They will leave you alone if you leave them alone. There are no aggressive Africanised honeybees in New Zealand,” Dr Orr said.

If you would like to have bee hives on your property Dr Orr recommends hiring hives from a professional bee-keeper.

“The most hassle-free way of acquiring a healthy bee presence is to ask a registered local beekeeper if he or she would like to keep a few hives on your farm. All you need to provide is a quiet sheltered sunny corner and plenty of flowering plants.”

Some beekeepers will charge you to have their hives on your property, and in return will share with you a portion of the honey they collect.

If having bee hives on your property doesn’t interest you, the next best thing is to attract the presence of nearby bees.

“To encourage feral bees and bees from neighbouring hives, plant or

other benefits as well.“Fortunately a number of shelter and

are cabbage trees, hebe, manuka, matagouri, New Zealand flax, Southern rata and weeping kowhai.

Some non-native bee attracting plants are apple and pear trees, lavender, rosemary, blue gum trees and weeping willows.

Those of us ‘living the life’ in a rural setting understand the benefits of fresh air, less traffic, more space and getting a return from the land through reducing our grocery bills. Why not throw the net wider and invite more children to share the pleasures of being with trusting friendly farm animals?

Bringing young visitors onto our farms and lifestyle blocks gives us a great opportunity to teach the kids about the realities of farming animals and the need to take good care of them.

We can use these visits to encourage empathy in young people towards animals and towards all living things in general.

Many children from the towns and cities grow up knowing little about where their meat, wool, milk and eggs come from.

On our farms we can teach kids that while we use our animals to provide these things, we treat the animals well because we are genuinely fond of them.

The other very good reason for treating them well is that, as even the most unsentimental farmer or lifestyle block owners knows, for farming to be productive the animals have to be healthy and content.

We can teach children to encourage animals to come to us for patting (not for food) and to be quiet and calm when we are with them.

Keeping low encourages stock to

Share the joys of animals on the lifestyle blockby Dr Majorie Orr, www.lifestyleblock.co.nz

One of the nicest things about having a lifestyle farm is that we can keep a few pets and friendly farm animals, and most of us know quite a few youngsters who love to visit them.

come forward, and sitting quietly for a while (very difficult when they are excited) lets the children watch the animals interacting with each other.

It's obviously important to pick quiet well-handled livestock for close contact with visitors, but even then they can kick or bite unexpectedly if they get a sudden fright.

We should encourage our animals to come to us for patting and grooming rather than for food rewards. Biting is particularly likely if owners rely on titbits to entice the animals forward.

This can lead to livestock, particularly ponies, snatching at the food and bullying each other to get at it, and that's not a good experience for the children.

Children should be taught about the sharp biting end and the blunt kicking end of horses, ponies and donkeys, the sideways and backwards kicking of cattle, the head butting of all stock, and the standing on feet.

If you are interested in inviting more young visitors to your lifestyle block, you could contact your local primary and intermediate schools, your regional SPCA and children's community groups. Then you can look forward to giving some town youngsters an experience they won't forget... and you might even enjoy it too.

While these first rabbits died out, in the 1850s more were introduced from both Australia and Europe to establish an export fur trade and meat for the local market.

The rabbit flourished with no natural predators and by 1876 landowners were looking another ecological disaster in the face. Rabbit numbers then peaked in 1890, the 1920s and in 1946.

Greatest damage has been caused in the South Island high country where observers report that on occasions you can see the top soil of the McKenzie basin blowing down to Timaru.

Over the years massive amounts of farmer's and government money have been poured into rabbit control without a permanent solution.

It was this frustration that drove some South Island high country farmers to illegally import the calici virus from Australia. It has reduced numbers with spectacular improvements but a resistant strain is slowly building up again.

Future control will have to be based on an integrated approach using all methods available at the time.

Dealing with rabbits on your lifestyle blockCaptain James Cook first introduced rabbits to New Zealand as an emergency food source for shipwrecked sailors.

How can you tell if you have a problem?• Rabbit scratchings in the paddock

with droppings nearby.• Nests of young rabbits in the

paddock - shallow burrows with entrances covered by fresh soil.

• Domestic cats bringing home rabbits.

• Rabbit numbers on the lifestyle block increasing.

• Rabbit tracks coming into pastures from wooded areas.

• Warrens developing with close grazed areas around them covered in droppings.

How can you tell if you're doing well?• No sign of rabbits on your

lifestyle block.• No wasted closely-grazed pasture

caused by rabbits.• No damage to crops or trees.• Shooting or poisoning programmes

do not yield any rabbits. What can you do to improve things?• Take early action when you

see rabbits just establishing themselves on a property.

• Contact your regional council for advice.

• Make sure any control measures using baits are done correctly or rabbits will become bait shy and a major problem.

• Cooperate with neighbours to increase effectiveness of your eradication programme.

• Make sure when using poisons and firearms that you have met your full legal obligations.

If you want a carpet that keeps its appearance and will last at least 10 years there’s more than just the fibre to consider.

The way a carpet’s manufactured and how much foot-traffic it gets will also influence how well it keeps its looks.

There’s no simple answer to the question of which fibre is best.

A cheap wool carpet will always keep its looks and resist soiling better than a cheap synthetic carpet, but it may wear out more quickly. Wool is considered the ‘gold standard’ for carpets.

At the other end of the scale, a premium carpet – wool or synthetic – is excellent at resisting wear and keeping its appearance.

The look and feel of a carpet depends on the way it’s made (tufted or woven), the density of its pile and the degree of twist.

The best guide to durability is the carpet’s grading, which should be on a label on the back of the carpet sample.

In some carpets, patches of pile lie

Choosing the right carpet for your homeA carpet is one of the most expensive buying decisions you’ll make.

in a different direction from the rest of the carpet, known as ‘permanent pile reversal’, and which reflects light differently. This gives a watermark effect known as shading.

Always get your carpet installed professionally, to AS/NZS 2455.1:2007 standard. The standard requires the contractor to prepare a plan of the area to be carpeted showing where the seams will go.Consider these points when shopping for carpet:• Buy the best carpet you can afford.

Don’t be tempted to buy a cheap carpet that will look tired and scruffy after a year.

• Buy the densest pile you can afford. Check this by folding the carpet sample in half to see how closely the tufts are spaced – or by pressing down on the carpet to get a feel for how dense it is.

• Check the grading to make sure it’s suitable for the rooms you want to carpet.

Ellesmere A&P ShowSaturday 17th October 2015

The show’s organising committee devised the theme based around 2015 being the ‘International Year of Soil & Light’, with the added ingredient needed for prosperous growing – water.

The Ellesmere A&P Show is an accumulation of 12 months of hard work put in by the show committee and sub-committees, and culminates in a great spectacle, which fits together like a neat jigsaw on the day.

This year the show will prove to be more exciting than ever with a number of new show ring events to entertain the crowd, the return of some old favourites and of course the wonderful displays and competitions between an array of producers, businesses and creators from both within and outside the Ellesmere area.

This year’s show President is local Irwell farmer Chris Tod, who got involved because he says he likes seeing the tradition of a great show continue.

He joined the Committee in 1997 at the grassroots after stewarding in the sheep section and being involved in traffic management.

Chris farms with his wife Sharon and

This year’s LDCCA fundraising event was held on Sunday in the picturesque Broadfield Gardens on Selwyn Road.

Lincoln and District Community Care services development co-ordinator Lois Thomas said the weather was really in their favour.

Country garden fundraiser success storyby Kent Caddick

The Lincoln and District Community Care Association’s annual Spring Fling event continues to grow in popularity.

“The gardens were resplendent in colour and the atmosphere was extremely relaxing,” she said.

“While attendance numbers and the funds raised were similar to last year, the event is not all about the profit, it is also about the opportunity for people to socialise and enjoy one another’s

company in a beautiful setting.“Those who contributed to this very

successful day included the Lincoln Rotary Club members, local residents, Lincoln University Future Leader students, Community Care volunteers and staff, and the generosity of the Lincoln and Rolleston businesses and

sponsors who kindly donated goods and services.”

The Lincoln and Districts Community Care Association is a not-for-profit organisation and, apart from some grants funding, relies greatly on its own fundraising to deliver their services to the community.
