    The Loyalty of Christ

According to W.E. Vine the word pistos (faith or faithful) is used in the New Testament of one who is “to be trusted, reliable.” It is an attribute that applies both to God and to man. It implies loyalty; one who is worthy of trust. It is a quality to be admired and desired. John Ruskin said of this quality, it is “The noblest word in the catalogue of social virtues.” It is the one thing that is demanded of a servant and a soldier. In Revelation 19 John saw heaven opened and he saw Jesus. In his description of what he saw John said, “Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war” (19:11). Jesus is the Faithful and True! In this series of articles we want to discuss the loyalty of Jesus to God, to God’s word and to His disciples. God had entrusted to His Son a work to accom-plish. God sent His Son with a specific work to be done. Jesus explained that He was sent by His Father. “Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me” (Jn. 8:42). That work is spoken of again and again in the gospel of John. “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (Jn. 3:17). “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work” (Jn. 9:4). The work Jesus was given to do was one of re-demption. “But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons” (Gal. 4:4, 5). Paul spoke of this work in his letter to Titus 2:14 – “who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.” “The idea of redemption in the Old Testament takes its start from the thought of property. From this start the word "redemption" throughout the Old Testament is used in the general sense of deliverance. God is the Re-deemer of Israel in the sense that He is the Deliverer of Israel. In the New Testament the idea of redemption has more a suggestion of ransom. Men are held under the curse of the law (Ga 3:13), or of sin itself (Ro 7:23 f). The Redeemer purchases their deliverance by offering Himself as payment for their redemption” (ISBE). In the gospel of Mark Jesus acknowledged that this was His work. In re-buking James and John who were arguing over who would have the ideal seats in the kingdom, Jesus said, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mk. 10:45). To ransom means “to deliver a thing or person by paying the price for which it is held captive.”
