First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 Jerusalem is extolled as a place of glory and splendor because the Lord has come to His own city.

Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Paul tells the Ephesians that his special mission is to make the Gentiles co-heirs with the Jews in Christ — “members of the same body and sharers of the promise.”

Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 Herod learns that Wise Men from the East are searching for the newly born Christ Child. He instructs them to find the Child and to report His whereabouts to him. The Wise Men follow a star to the place where Mary and Jesus are and offer the Child gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They do not return to Herod but follow another route to their own country.

JANUARY 8, 2017: THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly The Epiphany of the Lord - January 8, 2017 “I am sure you have heard of the ministry God in his goodness gave me in your regard. God’s secret plan, as I have briefly described it, was revealed to me, unknown to men in former ages but now revealed by the Spirit to the holy apostles and prophets. It is no less than this: in Christ Jesus the Gentiles are co-heirs with the Jews, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise through the preaching of the gospel.” While we recall the visit of the Magi, detailing facts of a star, gifts and a hateful king, the real meaning for us is given by St. Paul. We learn three things today, we are: 1) co heirs, 2) members, 3) sharers. An heir receives a benefit, members gain the status of belonging and sharers enjoy a common life. This details who and what we are as ‘missionary disciples.’ It was not always so. The visitors from the orient represent all who believe and follow today. Jesus is the Savior of the world, of Christians, Jews, Muslims, all humankind. With reverence they brought gifts, symbolic yet real. We bring the gift of self, offering our gratitude for His coming, our desire to follow Him more closely. Like the Magi, we go to our streets and neighborhood, our barrio and homes, willing to bring our experience of Christ’s presence to others. Did you discover the Christ this Christmas? Be the star to reveal Him to others.

January 8, 2017

Dear friends in the Lord:

At this time each year in January, the

Archdiocese of New York is asked to take up

a collection to support The Catholic

University of America in Washington, D.C.

and the Catholic Communication Campaign

of the United States Conference of Catholic

Bishops.

Founded in 1887, The Catholic University of

America is a pontifical university (recognized

by the Holy See) that has been educating

students from all fifty states of our nation in

philosophy, theology, and the arts and

sciences. It has likewise educated many of

the clergy and religious serving the Church

in the United States and throughout the

world as well (including myself!). As a

pontifical university, the Holy Father asks

that the Catholic faithful of the nation

support CUA’s commitment to providing the

best in academic training and religious

formation.

The Catholic Communications Campaign

enables the United States Conference of

Catholic Bishops to partner with (arch)

dioceses throughout the United States in

producing educational, entertaining,

informational, and inspiring programs for

radio and television. One-half of your gift to

this campaign remains with us here in the

archdiocese to assist our own

communications office.

Your generous support of these two worthy

causes will be deeply appreciated.

With prayerful best wishes, I am,

Faithfully in Christ,

Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan

Archbishop of New York

NEWS FROM THE COURT:

The OLPH Ardsley gym was busy over the Christmas break as we hosted the 4th Annual Jingle Ball Tournament. All five 7th grade teams (3 boys and 2 girls) gave it their all against a number of neighboring

parishes. In the end, there was a Championship battle between the boys Ardsley Blue and Gold teams. The Blue team, coached by Tom Phelan and John Garcia, was victorious and earned bragging rights. In the girls bracket the Ardsley girls team led by Tom Foley and Tom Anderson fell short to St. Margaret's of Cortona of Riverdale in the final. There was great fun for all who attended. A big thanks to all the 8th graders who volunteered over the four days of the tournament.

Losing a child under any circumstance is terrible. Focusing on the spirituality of the grieving process can help tremendously. Please join us for a One-day Spiritual Retreat: February 11 or 25 at St. Joseph’s Seminary or April 1 at Church of the Magdalene, Sleepy Hollow. To register please call: 646-794-3191
