What's Up at the Airport?Last time, our own Dave Miller was the speaker giving us an
update from the St. Louis Regional Airport which he manages.Dave introduced the club to the airport board (by picture) andexplained that there are seven members appointed to theboard. Four are appointed by the mayors of municipalities(Bethalto, East Alton, Alton, and Wood River) and the otherthree are county appointments.Dave was excited to say that there are two large development
projects in the works at the airport. West Star Aviation hasbroken ground on a new 43,000 s/f hanger. West Star hasseveral facilities, but their headquarters is here in East Alton. They have a backlog of work and need more space to servicetheir clients. The other exciting project has to do with property that the
airport owns across 111 (behind Walgreens). J.G. Bruey isdeveloping the property and has gained approval for acommercial development (yet to be revealed) Rumor has itthat a supermarket is in the works.
News, Notes, and NonsenseMLK facts:
1) His name was originally Michael, not Martin. His father was alsoMichael King, hence why Martin Luther King Jr. was originally namedMichael King Jr. However, after a trip to Germany in 1931, Michael KingSr. changed his own name in homage to historic German theologianMartin Luther. Michael King Jr. was two years old at the time and KingSr. made the decision to change his son’s name to Martin Luther as well.2) At the age of 12, he seems to have tried to commit suicide. It wasMay of 1941 when his grandmother passed away after a heart attack. Atthe time of this event, King Jr. was off disobeying his parents by going towatch a parade when they told him not too. When he came home andlearned his grandmother had died, he went upstairs and jumped from thesecond story window of his house.3) King Jr. skipped two grades in high school, 9th and 11th, and enteredcollege (Moorehouse College) at the tender age of 15 in 1944. By 19, hereceived a bachelor’s degree in sociology.
4) He almost didn’t become a minister. After graduating from college, hestill had serious doubts about Christianity and the Bible and told hisfather (who was a Baptist minister, as his grandfather had also been)that he didn’t want to be a minister and instead was consideringbecoming a doctor or a lawyer. He later decided that the Bible had“many profound truths which one cannot escape” and chose to become aminister, entering seminary at Crozer Theological Seminary inPennsylvania. He graduated with his PhD at the age of 25.

India CelebratesThree Yearswithout Polio
Throughout India andaround the world,Rotary clubs arecelebrating a majormilestone: India hasgone three yearswithout a new case ofpolio. The last reportedcase was a two-year-oldgirl in West Bengal on13 January 2011.
To mark this historictriumph -- reachedafter a decades-longbattle against polio --Rotary clubsilluminated landmarksand iconic structuresthroughout the countrywith four simple butpowerful words, "Indiais polio free."
The three-yearachievement sets thestage for polio-freecertification of theentire Southeast Asiaregion by the WorldHealth Organization. The Indian governmentalso plans to convene apolio summit inFebruary tocommemorate thisvictory in the globaleffort to eradicatepolio.
The challenge now is toreplicate India'ssuccess in neighboringPakistan, one of threeremaining polio-endemic countries, along with Afghanistanand Nigeria.
Rotary leaders in Indiaare working with their
Pakistani counterpartsto share best practicesand lessons learnedduring India'ssuccessful anti-poliocampaign. Rotary wasparticularly effective inobtaining the supportof influential religiousleaders in India'sIslamic communities.Pakistani Rotaryleaders are playing asimilar role to counterrumors andmisinformation aboutpolio vaccinations thatkeep some Muslimparents fromimmunizing theirchildren.
Meanwhile, NationalImmunization Dayscontinue in bothcountries. During theselarge-scale drives,Rotary volunteers joinhealth workers tovaccinate every childunder age five againstpolio.
"We must now stoppolio in Pakistan toboth protect Pakistanichildren and tosafeguard our successin India and othercountries where wehave beaten thisterrible disease," saysIndia PolioPlusCommittee ChairDeepak Kapur. "Untilpolio is finallyeradicated globally, allunvaccinated childrenwill remain at risk ofinfection and paralysis,no matter where theylive."
Just For FunDuring a robbery, one of the robbers mask sliddown.
He looked at a man and asked. Did you see myface?
The man said yes! The robber shot him.
Then he asked a woman. Did you see my face?
She said no, but my husband over there did.
