THE SCROLL Vol. XXXIII, No. 4 ST. PATRICK SCHOOL, WAUKON, IOWA June 10, 2011 St. Patrick School—Gifting for the Ages June 2011 Dear Alumni and Supporters of St. Patrick School, This past school has truly been an exciting and busy school year!! Mrs. Fahey and her sixth grade class got things started with the return of the Wildcat! They worked on a class project to revive the Wildcat mascot, promoting respect and pride in our school. Willy, the Wildcat, was often seen prowling the school halls and joining in parades and at various school functions throughout the year. One of the goals is to instill positive values in our students—values such as respect, accountability, and going the extra mile. Wildcats are fearless and will stop at nothing to succeed. We want our current students to learn those values and continue to demonstrate those traits throughout their lives as our alumni continue to do each day. During the year, we worked with other Catholic schools in the area to bring in a national expert and speaker regarding the problems of bullying in schools. Jodee Blanco, best selling author for her books on bullying, spoke to our students, staff, and community members regarding the negative consequences that bullying can have on those being bullied and the bullies themselves. Technology changes continue to create challenges and opportunities for us. We have an updated and more vi- brant website that hopefully many of you have checked out and continue to review to keep updated about the school and what is going on in the community. Mrs. Schafer, fourth grade teacher, applied for a McElroy Grant to purchase Kindles for her classroom. The fourth graders really enjoyed using that technology to im- prove their reading skills. Through a grant from the Allamakee Community Foundation and many donations, classrooms this fall will have Promethean interactive boards that will more actively engage students in the learning process. The Building Improvements Campaign Committee set a high goal of raising $250,000 for the replacement of roofs on both school buildings and tuck pointing for the Upper Building. Through their efforts, over $180,000 has been pledged and/or given to the campaign. Maintaining and upgrading the buildings is an integral part of the total educational process. Yes, St. Patrick School continues to strive to meet its students’ needs and provide the parish community and the entire area an opportunity for a faith-filled educational experience—the same goal that Father John Hawe had when he encouraged his parish to build St. Patrick School in 1883. We ask you to assist in maintaining this tradition by your Gift for the Ages—whether it be toward the Endow- ment Fund, Building Improvement Endowment Fund or the Annual Appeal. Gifts for next year or those to the Endowment Funds are important for the future of St. Patrick School. We also ask that you remember St. Pat- rick School as you do your estate planning. May God bless you and your families. Rev. Joseph M. Schneider Richard J. Wede, Ed.D. Pastor Principal

Alumni Notes

Outstanding Alumni Honored

On Thursday, February 3, 2011 at the Catholic School Week Chili Supper, Dick Sullivan received the 2011 Outstanding Alumni Award. Dick attended St. Patrick School from 1950—1962. He was vice-president of his class all four years of high school. Dick was born to Francis and Myrl Sullivan on June 30, 1944. He married Cathy Stirn on April 16, 1966. He and Cathy have 4 children: Chelle is married to Danny Meyer and live in Decorah Kyle is deceased Jason is married to Nikki (Ellefson) and live in Waukon Brigitte is married to Eric Weymiller and live in Harpers Ferry Dick and Cathy have 10 grandchildren that they love to spoil. Dick is a fantastic supporter of St. Patrick School. He has been instrumental in promoting and organizing the All-School Reunions. He has encouraged the group to provide scholarships for our parents to ease the cost of attending St. Patrick School. And, the past two years he (West Side Auto Sales) has donated a four-wheeler for the raffle at Mardi Gras. Congratulations, Dick, on being selected this year’s recipient of the St. Patrick School Outstanding Alumni Award!!

Scrip—The Ultimate Fundraising Activity Scrip sales continue to climb each quarter and help the financial budgets for both the parish and the school. Every dollar raised through Scrip is one less dollar that needs to be given for the parish and the school. Everyone living in the community or throughout the United States can participate in this program. Many local and national-based companies participate in the Scrip Program. They offer gift cards or will accept our local Scrip to be used to purchase items. You purchase the gift cards and/or St. Patrick Scrip at face value. The business sells the gift cards to the school at a discounted price. That discounted amount is what St. Patrick School retains with one and one-half percent (1.5%) going toward that parent’s tuition/fees. The average family generally will spend over $1,000 per month for food, household cleaning/paper products, and gasoline. If Scrip discount is estimated at 3%, then a family would earn $15 in tuition/fee credit and the parish/school would also earn $15 in income. With approximately 750 parish families, this would generate $270,000 in total income to the parish/school/parents. And, the best news is that everyone is buying those products for their family needs—the only change required is to buy the Scrip cards before shopping. Anyone may designate their savings to any student attending St. Patrick School or attending the religious education program at St. Patrick Parish. Thanks to our dedicated committee members (Rose Ann Mark, Amy Garrett, and Cynthia Berger) who maintain all of the individual records, order Scrip cards, and maintain the inventory, St. Patrick School has raised over $35,000 for the school during the first 4 years. That figure could be ten-fold if everyone in the parish participated. As alum, even if you do not live in the area, can participate. Please check out our school website to see the many national companies that participate.

Reading and Mathematics Goals for 2011—2012

The long range goal for reading is that students will improve in their reading skills. During the 2010 – 2011 school year, fifty-seven and nine-tenths percent (59.6%) of the students in grades 3 – 6 increased their National Standard Score (NSS) by a minimum of the average rate of growth for their grade as measured by the reading comprehension subtest of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. During the 2011-2012 school year, a minimum of fifty-nine and seven-tenths percent (59.7%) of the students in grades 3 – 6 will increase their National Standard Score by a minimum of the average rate of growth for their grade as measured by the reading comprehension subtest of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills.

The long range goal for mathematics is that students will improve in their mathematic skills. During the 2010 – 2011 school year, sixty-six and seven-tenths percent (66.7%) of the students in grades 3 – 6 increased their National Standard Score (NSS) by a minimum of the average rate of growth for their grade as measured by the mathematics total of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. During the 2011-2012 school year, a minimum of sixty-six and eight-tenths percent (66.8%) of the students in grades 3 – 6 will increase their National Standard Score by a minimum of the average rate of growth for their grade as measured by the mathematics total of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills.
