“From the Beginning”: God’s Design for MarriageA Statement from the Anglican Church in North America

The Archbishop and Bishops of the Anglican Church in North America have received the recent ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States of America and are deeply grieved by the stark departure from God’s revealed order. We are concerned for the inevitable results from this action to change the legal understanding of marriage and family life.

While this decision grieves us, God’s truth and the goodness of the order established in creation have not been changed. The kingdom of God cannot be shaken. We pray with confidence that God will reveal his glory, love, goodness, and hope to the world through his Church as we seek to follow him in faith and obedience.

Jesus Christ teaches that God is the author of marriage from the beginning of time (Matthew 19:4-6). God’s design for marriage has always involved a man and a woman: “a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). These truths have ordered civilization for thousands of years. Where God’s designs are followed in any society, including his designs for marriage and families, the result is the greatest possible blessing and abundance of life.

The Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is often summarized as, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Because of his love, we love and care for all those who experience same-sex attraction. The Anglican Church in North America continues to welcome everyone to experience the transforming love of Jesus Christ.

Marriage is established by God for the procreation and raising of children and for the good of society. For this reason, governments have an interest in marriage and have delegated authority from God to protect and regulate it. But no court, no legislature and no local magistrate has the authority to redefine marriage and to impose this definition on their citizens.

The United States of America, so its founders believed and taught, is a nation under God whose citizens’ fundamental rights are derived from the Creator. There is no right to a relationship which is contrary to the Creator’s express design. We cannot accept the Supreme Court’s decision purporting to find a fundamental right to same-sex “marriage” any more than we can accept its claim to have found a right to destroy human life in the womb. We will work with others to overturn this

decision, and we pray that others will join with us in this effort.

Meeting this week in Vancouver, British Columbia, we are reminded that our Canadian members have been living under a similar legal standard for the last ten years. Their situation includes minimal legal protections for those who in good conscience cannot recognize this redefinition, and it is our prayer that stronger protections will be put into place and honored in the United States.

In the meantime, we shall continue to exercise our religious freedom to perform marriages for those who come for holy matrimony as defined by our Church. The Anglican Church in North America only authorizes and only performs marriages between one man and one woman. We respect the consciences of those clergy who may decline to perform marriages as agents of the state. We ask our churches to respect such decisions and help make arrangements to minister to those seeking to be married. We are also well aware that this ruling may create difficulties for our lay members and Christian institutions as they seek to be faithful in upholding God’s design for marriage, and we will make every effort to find ways to support and stand with them.

The Church bears witness to the truth of God’s Word and God’s design of marriage (see attached statement on “Bearing Witness”). When government oversteps its rightful authority, “we must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29).

Today there is no place for either triumphalism or despair, so we prayerfully and sincerely urge a spirit of charity by all. We speak out of a concern for the consequences that our people and our neighbors will suffer from an unjust and unwise decision by five justices of the Supreme Court. We call those justices to repentance, even as we echo Jesus’ words, praying for God the Father to forgive them, for they know not what they have done.

We call our people to a season of prayer for marriage and offer the accompanying Litany and Prayer to guide us.

The hallways seem strangely quiet, now that VBS has concluded, but the memories of Vacation Bible School 2015 will linger for many months to come. This year it was fun to take a theme which is so popular with children today (that of superheroes) and give it a sharp Christian focus:

• Putting on the armor of God (Ephesians 6) • Cloaking ourselves with the promise of salvation

(John 3:16)• Claiming the power of the Holy Spirit as we live our

daily lives (Acts 1:8)

This theme lent itself to lots of color and action, and there was plenty of that at VBS ’15!

It was fun to watch The Savior’s City take shape in Moncrief Hall, to give us the “big city look” which we needed for our superheroes’ setting. I am so grateful to all those who had the vision for this city, and those who cut huge, thick chunks of styrofoam, hammered, painted, and hung things to make both the city AND the subway (in the preschool area on the lower floor of Ryan House) AND the rooftop area (in the elementary area of the parish house) become reality.

New to VBS this year was the TV Newsroom (which replaced the standard Bible Story Room) and added a fun, new, delightful touch to fit in with our superhero theme. The live “talk show emphasis” was lots of fun, with plenty of humor sprinkled in with the serious points to remember. There were also “street interviews,” as well as other fun, lively happenings in the streets of The Savior’s City.

And yes, a tall, handsome figure in a red cape strolled through the streets of our city on a couple of days of VBS, telling children how much he loved Jesus, and how important it is to FOLLOW HIM and to study HIS words.

And yes, ALL children had the chance to design a bright, colorful cape, in his/her own special way. Attached to each cape was a large, beautiful cross, as a constant

reminder to children that the way to be a genuine superhero each day is to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, and to strive to walk with Him each hour. Children also took home bright duct tape crosses, wooden picture frames, and round heavy cardboard shields, designed with their own special touches, and lovingly prepared by our super, truly amazing crafts team.

In addition, the children loved the wonderful VBS music instruction each day, which included the beautiful “Trust and Obey” gospel hymn, as well as several fast-paced, fun praise songs fit for superheroes (a couple of which had some clever

rearranging of words). And the non-stop action games in The Savior’s City were a big hit each day for young superheroes who needed to flex their muscles. Then, of course, our VBS superheroes had delightful, very hearty snacks each day, to keep them fit, prepared and served by our fabulous kitchen team. These kept them geared up for each day’s super activities. Our daily, simple chapel services added a great balance of some quiet time, reverence, and worship to each day’s routine.

Finally, our truly super Registration and Welcome Team was on the ball and ready each day to hand out name tags and t-shirts, to answer questions, and to direct participants to their proper areas and activities. The VBS homeroom teachers and youth aides were absolutely indispensable and marvelous as well. The St. Andrew’s office staff and our sexton and security guards also helped so much to keep things running safely and securely.

In the next issue of The Messenger (July 24), I shall have a full listing of ALL the wonderful people (both adults and youth) who made VBS ‘15 happen. Indeed, they truly ARE superheroes, each one of them! To all of you who supported VBS with your labors, your prayers, and your monetary donations, thank you and may God bless you. Above all, thanks be to Almighty God for giving the smile of HIS blessing upon St. Andrew’s VBS 2015.

Congratulations to our Graduating SeniorsSt. Andrew’s congratulates our 2015 graduating high school seniors. They were recognized in our 10:30 service at church on June 7. We pray God’s special blessings upon them as they begin a new chapter in their lives this fall.

Sarah McLaughlinSarah graduated from All Saints’ Episcopal School (ASES), where she had been a student for 13 years, since K. She was very involved at ASES through the years, as Editor of the All Saints’ Yearbook and the All Saints’ Review Literary Magazine, Vice-President of the Spirit Club, and a Student Council representative. She played Varsity Field Hockey and Tennis, and was a member of the Junior Canwick Club. She is a counselor this summer at Camp Mystic for Girls. Growing up at St. Andrew’s, she participated in Sunday School, VBS, and the Nativity Pageant, and she enjoyed serving as a liturgical acolyte for five years. She will be attending the University of Texas at Austin this fall and is very excited to be a Longhorn.

Will OramWill’s family moved to Fort Worth and began attending St. Andrew’s when he was a preschooler. Will graduated this year with high honors (a 4.0 GPA) from Christian Life Preparatory School (CLPS), where he had been a student since first grade. He was in the top 20% of his class and was a member of the National Honor Society from 10th grade on. He was also the Yearbook Editor, Photographer, Sports Photographer, and Senior Editor at CLPS. He was on the A Honor Roll throughout his high school years. He was the 4-H Rifle Team President for two years, a Junior TSRA Rifle Coach, and won several medals at the National Rifle Team Championships. He was a football running back in 11th grade at CLPS, and is also a Red-Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. At St. Andrew’s, Will has been very active in the children’s and youth programs all through the years. He has been a faithful participant in Sunday School, VBS, the Nativity Pageant, the Bible Olympics program, and the Good Friday service and program, and as a teenager - a helper with the younger children in all these programs. He has been a liturgical acolyte the

past six years, and has been a member of St. Andrew’s youth mission trips to Arkansas in 2013 and 2014, as well as a member of the McKinney Bible Church Mission Team that led a soccer camp for at-risk youth in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2014. During his high school years, he accumulated almost 300 hours of volunteer community service, helping in ministries to the homeless, in service to children with Down Syndrome and other disabilities, at the Como Science Camp, etc. Will will be attending the University of Houston this fall, seeking a degree in Creative Writing or Advertising.

Charles Edward Tackett II (Chas)Chas is a graduate of Northwest High School, with honors from the Academy of Media and Technology, with an emphasis in film and broadcasting. He was recognized as an academic Texas Scholar, completing numerous AP classes, and received the NISD 2015 Trustee Award of Excellence for his accomplishment as 7th Chair, Tenor 1 for All-State Men’s Choir TMEA held in San Antonio, Texas. He received honors for Choir and Band, in the area of Fine Arts.Chas is the sound engineer for Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Outside of the parish, he is a singer and songwriter for Sony ATV in Los Angeles, California. In the fall, Chas will continue his education at the University of North Texas and Tarrant County College, in pursuit of a film & marketing degree, with a minor in music. He also plans to continue singing choral music with the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s Master Chorale, performing at Bass Hall, local halls and churches throughout Fort Worth.

Nine years ago, the Tackett family attended and joined St. Andrew’s, but seven years ago, Chuck was transferred to Virginia. This past year, the family returned to the Metroplex, and they had a happy “homecoming” to our parish. When young Chas was here at St. Andrew’s, he took part in Sunday School, the Children’s Choir, VBS, the Nativity Pageant, and the Bible Olympics program. It is great to have the Tacketts back in Texas!

But the Lord said to me, “Do not say I am only a youth; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you to speak, you shall speak. Do not be afraid...for I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 1: 7-8

Summer Volunteer ChoirCome sing with the choir this summer!

The choir of St. Andrew’s is looking for some eager and willing volunteers to join our ranks during the months of June and July. If you have been curious about singing with us or just seeing what it is like to sing and worship in the choir stalls, join us on Sunday mornings. The choir will be rehearsing the hymns, canticles, and offertory anthem

on select days. The literature is accessible and you might learn a few things to encourage your singing within the congregation during the remainder of the year; some of you may decide to sing with us past the summer and that would be wonderful! Come to the choir stalls at 9:45 a.m. this Sunday to prepare for the service. We look forward to singing with you!
