The Salvation Army
Four-hundred and fifty bicyclists
toured between Missouri and Kansas.
starting and finishing at the Liberty
Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri.
SATERN Member Steve Lester
KDØEKS organized the radio
communications and was the net
controller for the event. Mike Asselta
KDØCDQ was one of the
communications volunteers. The
SATERN Communications Vehicle enhanced the communications for the Metric Century,
fifty miler, 36 miler, and 14 miler routes making for a
safe and secure event.
The rest stops included The Hope Center, the
Fireman’s Memorial (Pictured to the right, Martin
City in Missouri) and Erik’s Bike Shop in Leawood
Kansas.
Herb Fiddick, NZØF,
presented the popular mode
FT-8.
The May joint meeting of
SATERN/Johnson County ARES was
held at the Olathe Corps on Monday,
May 18, 2018. SATERN Divisional
Coordinator Rich Britain, NØENO,
began the meeting with introductions.
SATERN member Herb Fiddick,
NZØF, then made an interesting
presentation on FT-8, one of the most
popular digital modes to hit the
amateur radio scene in some time. The mode offers communications possibilities even in the very poor band
conditions we have experienced on HF (high frequency) during the last year.
Herb provided a link to information about the mode which we expect will be of interest to our members.
http://www.g4ifb.com/FT8_Hinson_tips_for_HF_DXers.pdf
As an aside, Herb is very much involved in the promotion of amateur radio in the Kansas City area. He is the
trustee and face of WW1USA, the amateur radio callsign of the amateur radio club of the National WW1
Museum at Kansas City, MO. That organization, along with other local amateur radio clubs, holds special
amateur radio events at the museum throughout the year using the WW1USA callsign. Herb also teaches
the Ham 101 course helping new amateur operators get on the air and learn about public service events and
emergency communications. Herb also leads the amateur radio communications efforts for various public
service events throughout the Kansas City Area. Herb is a very busy guy and we really appreciate his taking
the time to make his presentation at our meeting.
After the FT-8 presentation, Herb and Rich directed those present in an interesting game developed by Diana
Fiddick, KDØOBP, which challenged our members to use International Telecommunication Union Standard
Phonetics. Too often we hear people on the amateur radio bands using non-standard phonetics which can be
confusing, particularly in disaster relief operations. During the Simulated Emergency Test Exercise in
October we will be graded to an extent during the SET as to our use of ITU phonetics. Diana’s game was
informative, challenging and fun and we thank Diana for putting it all together.
Finally, we were able to dispose of some equipment to benefit The Salvation Army. As you might guess,
equipment is donated to The Salvation Army by those in the amateur radio community which is very much
appreciated. While some of the equipment is immediately usable by our SATERN team, other pieces of
donated equipment are clearly more than our needs, may be outdated, or not working. Rich submitted a
request for the disposal of some of the excess, outdated and non-working pieces which was approved by The
Salvation Army Divisional Finance Board prior to our joint meeting. As a result, at the meeting we were able
to give some of the equipment a new home while benefitting The Salvation Army through donations.
Thank you to those who attended the meeting. We hope to see you again next month at our meeting on
Monday, June 11, 2018 at the Olathe Corps.
EDS volunteer Phil Winfrey responded to the
exercise in a Salvation Army Canteen with
refreshments for firefighters of the Kansas City
Aircraft Rescue Division.
Amateur radio operators
provided communications, and as one Kansas City Police Officer stated, “There is no way we
(KCPD) could cover the 7.7 mile Hospital Hill Run without assistance from amateur radio
operators providing line-of-sight surveillance.” SATERN members John Capra KDØEVM,
Diana Fiddick KDØOBP, Herb Fiddick NZØF, Mike Asselta KDØCDQ, and others were a
part of the Greater Kansas City ham community that assisted in various roles. The runners
numbered in the thousands after a rain delay start at 7:30 am through the streets of the city.
John Callahan, The Salvation Army Divisional Director of Emergency Disaster Services (left
in the picture) presents EDS Volunteer P.D. Crow a certificate recognizing Crow for his
outstanding work in support of Salvation Army operations during Hurricane Harvey. P.D.
Crow is an important part of the EDS team who regularly volunteers his time to canteen
operations in support of our EDS program.
The Salvation Army kicked
off our 63rd annual
National Salvation Army
Week. Each year, this week serves as an opportunity to celebrate our volunteers, donors and
program beneficiaries who have enabled us to serve in the United States for 135 years.
This week is observed immediately following Mother's Day in May and was first declared
by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954 – 75 years after The Salvation Army arrived in the
U.S.
In his speech, President Eisenhower noted,
“Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication
to the cause of human brotherhood. In time of war, the men and women of this organization
have brought to those serving their country far from home, friendliness and warm concern. In
the quieter days of peace, their work has been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is
neighbor and kin to all Americans. Giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The
Salvation Army have won the respect of us all.”

week
It is continually important for SATERN to demonstrate our relevance, not only now, but for
the future as well. Using local events demonstrates our current capability. When we can also
demonstrate high–tech capability (like mesh networks, video by ATV, low–res images by
FLDIGI, or high–res images by QSSTV) we demonstrate our future as well. Use of new
technology like the Raspberry Pi 3B+ is both fascinating and applicable.
By supporting well deserving fund raisers or awareness raising events we demonstrate that
ham radio is not just for “Techies”. It has a public service function as well.
By letting the uninformed and uninitiated get the chance to touch and feel the excitement of
radio communication, we provide the incentive for that person to seek a ham radio license and
become a SATERN volunteer.
Without SATERN presence and without seizing the opportunities afforded us, we become
irrelevant and relegated to net meetings and training that amount to little more than club
activities. Satern.org
A special event is taking place in which all our SATERN members in the Kansas and Western
Missouri Division may be interested in participating. To celebrate thirty years of the SATERN
program, SATERN will be conducting what SATERN is calling a SATERN Net Rally. This
rally will be from Monday, June 25 through Sunday July 8, 2018. All licensed amateur radio
operators, including those who do not belong to SATERN, are welcome to participate.
An amateur radio operator who checks in to any of the registered participating SATERN Nets
whether the net is local, Divisional, Territorial, International, etc. will receive a SATERN QSL
Card. As information, the Kansas and Western Missouri Division has four registered nets
which are listed near the bottom of this newsletter in the section titled “SATERN Divisional
Radio Nets weekly…” One SATERN QSL card (and only one card) will be sent to the address
of the operator’s call sign as found on the commercial database www.QRZ.com.
The QSL cards will be from WW9E the official Salvation Army USA National Headquarters
station callsign. As many of you may recall, WW9E was the long-time call sign for Major
Patrick E. McPherson, the Founder of SATERN. Major Pat sadly became a Silent Key in
May 2016. Major Pat had many connections to our Division. Patrick McPherson was born in
Kansas City, KS. He graduated from Wyandotte High School and attended Kansas City Metro
Junior College. Patrick McPherson also served previously as an officer of The Salvation
Army in the Kansas and Western Missouri Division. Major Pat offered guidance and support
during our deployments to Greensburg, KS and Joplin, MO. Major Pat was also known to
join us on our Kansas and Western Missouri Divisional SATERN HF Nets.
Just so you are aware, the format for nets may be a little different from normal during our
nets that take place during the net rally. Amateur radio operators checking-in to any
SATERN Net registered for the SATERN Net Rally will be asked to provide their call sign,
name, and location. The net times and frequencies for SATERN Nets can be found on
SATERN.org.
According to SATERN, those amateur radio operators checking into eight or more nets will
receive a SATERN certificate via e-mail. Further, the top five check-ins having the most
confirmed log-ins will receive an honorable mention on www.SATERN.org and in SATERN's
weekly newsletter.
SATERN Divisional Coordinator Rich Britain, NØENO, and Salvation Army
Emergency Disaster Services personnel have printed new badges for many
Salvation Army Volunteers (including SATERN members) who had badges that
have expired, would be expiring shortly, or have never had a badge and have
recently completed all necessary requirements. If you are a SATERN member
and have a badge that is expiring, please let Rich know so that arrangements
can be made for an updated photograph and the preparation of a new badge. Please note,
badging requires, but is not limited to, a clean background investigation, and the successful
completion of Introduction to Emergency Disaster Services and Safe from Harm. You must
also have an approved photograph and agree to all required releases in the National Database.
For those of you SATERN members (listed immediately below) in the Kansas City Area your
badge will be available at the next Johnson County ARES/SATERN meeting on Monday,
June 11, 2018 at the Olathe Corps. The Olathe Corps is located at 420 E. Santa Fe, Olathe,
KS and the meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. (CDT). If you need the badge sent to you, please let
Rich know at [email protected].

The Salvation Army continues to provide
food, hydration and spiritual and emotional
care to responders and military officials on
scene in Savannah, Georgia where a WC-130
military cargo plane crashed Wednesday
afternoon, killing all nine people aboard.
The Salvation Army Savannah Corps canteen
(mobile feeding unit) on scene has served
approximately 600 meals a day non-stop since
Wednesday. To help in the response effort,
local businesses were quick to partner with The Salvation Army.
The WC-130 was flying from Savannah to Tucson, Arizona, when it crashed. According to
reports, the plane was at least 50 years old and was flying to Arizona to be decommissioned. It
was used last year during Hurricane Irma to rescue US citizens from the British Virgin
Islands.
“Prayers continue to go out to the families of all on board the plane and those impacted by
this tragic event,” said Major Swyers. “The Salvation Army is here on scene, and will continue
to provide help and hope for as long as is needed.” Satern.org
London, 24 April 2018 – The 2017 Atlantic
hurricane season was one of the worst in
living memory. Major damage was recorded
in Mexico and central America, and across
the southern states of the USA, but perhaps
the most significant devastation was seen on
some of the Caribbean islands. The Salvation
Army's Caribbean, Latin America North and
USA Eastern Territories, utilizing staff and
officers from corps (Salvation Army
churches) across the region, was on the scene
immediately, providing emergency help and aid to those in the greatest need. More than six
months later, the response continues. Satern.org
Hilo, Hawaii, HI [May 5, 2018] – Emergency
Disaster Services [EDS] personnel and
volunteers from The Salvation Army are
responding to the current lava flow in Leilani
Estates. The team provided 50 cases of bottled
water for the shelter at the Pahoa Community
Center on Thursday evening and served 76
meals at the Pahoa shelter on Friday. In
addition, The County of Hawaii is working
with The Salvation Army and community and
business partners to set up a donation
distribution center in Puna. The location is to be determined and will be announced soon.

Santa Fe, Texas
Shooting
Galveston, Texas – The Salvation Army
continues to serve in the aftermath of the
tragic shooting at Santa Fe High School.
Immediately following the incident,
Captain Patrick Jones, Galveston
Commanding Officer, was on-site serving food and water to first responders. A second mobile
feeding unit was deployed from Freeport and provided dinner at the Family Reception Center
established at the High School. Additionally, four emotional and spiritual care (ESC) officers
arrived from the Greater Houston Area Command and were positioned at the Alamo Gym
where parents waited to reunite with their children following the shooting. These ESC officers
were available to counsel and pray with families, including those who received the devastating
news that that their children were lost in the tragedy. May 19, 2018 Philip Burn |

Social Services conference. This annual
conference allows for the entire state to train together and network. Krista Edwards, The
Director of Social Services in Columbus stated, “Our divisions divide the state of Ohio in half,
but many state programs involve the whole state; it is important for us all to get together, and
address issues involving the entire state.” May 15, 2018 Thad Hicks | [email protected] | (740) 601-1252
