That hope, however, is tinged with a warning, as we discover in the preaching of John the Baptist. The First Read- ings for the four Sundays of Advent are taken from the great Hebrew prophet, Isaiah. Today he pro- claims that a new king shall sprout from the family tree of Jesse (David’s father). This new king will rule with wisdom and justice, and the world will be transformed-even the animal kingdom. As in last week’s Isaiah passage, we read of a holy mountain, the place from which God’s power and peace will envelope the nations. Today’s psalm echoes the attributes of the king an- nounced by Isaiah. It cries out for God to endow the king with justice, the same justice that God has for all nations. Jesus, of the house of David, will embody this same justice when the prophecy of Isaiah is ful- filled generations later. Paul reminds the Christians of Rome that the Word of God contained in the ancient Scriptures, what we know as the Old Testament, is the source of their hope, and be a source of great encouragement; it is the reason that they should live in harmony. In so doing, they will be one with Jesus Christ and will be able to praise God with one voice. The Gospel for today and next Sunday introduces John the Baptist. Each year during Advent we read John’s all for repentance as he storms out of the wilderness! For him repentance is the necessary step for becoming part of the Reign of God. John harshly criticizes the religious leaders; not because he is the one to judge-that is the role of Jesus-but because he is adamant that all should be ready to accept the one who comes after him. What virtues or actions noted in the readings will identify those who await the Lord? What do the readings suggest about what is neces- sary for Christians to live in harmony with one an- other? What insights do the themes of Advent-and these readings in particular-offer you about your own Baptism? December 4th, 2016 2nd Sunday of Advent Peace

Scripture Insights The Scriptures for today are full of hope. That hope, however, is tinged with a warning, as we discover in the preaching of John the Baptist. Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for ever. Psalm 72

Practice of Hope For some, it can be difficult to both hold people accountable and also maintain unity with them. But for God, justice, healing, and peace naturally embrace. Pope Francis helped draw attention to prison ministry when he stopped at a prison dur-ing his visit to the United States in 2015. Pray for prisoners this week.

Christmas Flower Donations Donations are being accepted in memory and in honor of your loved ones, which will go toward our Christ-mas Flowers. If you do not receive of-fering envelopes monthly, we will have some available at all the entrances of the

church. Please drop off your envelope at the parish office or in the offering basket.

Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen,

unheard, but always near, so loved, so missed, so very dear
