Respectful Conversations Groupmeets this week - All are welcome - Tuesday evening at 7:00At St. Matthew’s we are a welcoming community. The key words of our Mission Statement, “Welcome, Nurture, Equip, and Send” begin with “Welcome,” and our Welcome and Evangelism committee has worked hard to make us more welcoming with procedures for reaching out to welcome people who are new to us.Now God is calling us to turn to focus on welcome to a deeper level. A new group has come forward calling themselves the “Respectful Conversations Group.” This group is focused on deepening our welcome of all people who come to St. Matthew’s – both those who are already members and those who have just walked through our doors. Our community is made up of a variety of family types (married, single, divorced, partnered – children, no children) and people of various ethnicities and sexual orientations. This group will be holding “respectful conversations” to listen for the guidance of the Spirit and discern how we can become even more welcoming of all people. If you would like to join in these conversations, join us on Tuesday, July 15 at 7:00 p.m.

A Chance to have an impact on the future - Support our seminarians! St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church has many opportunities to support the young people in our congregation. However, at this time there is a unique opportunity to support two young adults who were nurtured and grew up in our congregation. Amy Erickson and Matthew Petersen have made decisions to follow their passion to serve our Lord. Amy is in the process of attaining her Doctorate of Theology at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkley, California. Matthew is pursuing his Master of Arts in Ministry in the seminary at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Both have shared God’s love with the underprivileged within our borders and/or in foreign countries. Both are seeking to further share God’s love through achieving higher education degrees, allowing them to better serve. There have been many recent articles published about the extreme cost of higher education. Schools of theology are no exception. As a church community and individuals we may not be able to go out and serve God as these two young adults have chosen, but we can serve by offering our monetary support to lessen the burden of the cost of tuition. If you choose to support Matthew and Amy in their mission to serve God, please make your contributions payable to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church and designate it as “Tuition Support for Theology Students.”

What Did We Do in Washington?Working in our nation’s capital, we explored the national issue of food insecurity by working with and learning from the following agencies:

DC Central Kitchen: We helped prepare some of the 5,000 meals that are made from leftovers and surplus food and distributed at little or no cost to 100 nearby homeless shelters, transitional homes, and nonprofit organizations. DC Central Kitchen also offers a Culinary Job Training program for unemployed men and women who want to replace homelessness, addiction, and incarceration with new careers and changed lives. (http://www.dccentralkitchen.org/mission/)

Food and Friends: We packaged and delivered meals for this agency whose mission is to foster a community caring for men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses by preparing and delivering specialized meals and groceries with nutrition counseling.Capital Area Food Bank:We sorted food at this agency that annually distributes 45 million pounds of food - the equivalent of 37.5 million meals - of which, 17 million pounds are fresh fruit and vegetables. It serves nearly 500,000 people in the region struggling with hunger. (http://www.capitalareafoodbank.org/learn/about-cafb/)SOME: We served meals at this interfaith, community-based organization that meets the immediate daily needs of the people we serve with food, clothing, and health care. We help break the cycle of homelessness by offering services, such as affordable housing, job training, addiction treatment, and counseling, to the poor, the elderly and individuals with mental illness. (http://www.some.org/about_mission.html)Martha’s Table: We served meals to the homeless and staffed a food pantry for students with the people at Martha’s Table, which is committed to engaging the community in developing sustainable solutions to poverty. They meet the needs of their clients with education, nutrition, clothing, and family support programs that prepare young people, from infancy through adulthood, for a promising future. (http://www.marthastable.org/our-mission.html)

We also served in a community garden and worked with various other groups sorting donations, working in a food pantry, and serving sandwiches.

Each year we continue to grow our attendance number, but not our number of adult volunteers. Adults, we ask that you prayerfully consider signing up to teach VBS or be a Tour Guide. We need your help! It is the volunteers that make this program so successful. Please feel free to give me a call if you have questions or schedule limitations. Thank you for helping us to continue to spread the Good News!

What’s It About? - What will children be learning?

St. Matthew’s Vacation Bible School 2014

Join us August 4th-8th from 8:45 - 11:45 a.m. for a week of faith-filled activities

Junior kindergartners through 5th graders are invited to a week of learning Bible Stories through

games, crafts, songs, skits and experiments.

This year’s VBS theme is “Workshop of Wonders: Imagine and Build with God” from Cokesbury

Publishers.

Children will encounter amazing wonders when they imagine and build with God. They will discover biblical

characters who experienced the extraordinary when they used their hands, hearts, and minds to

imagine, build, grow, work and walk with God. Lessons include: The Story of Esther; Rebuilding the Lord’s

House; Parable of the Mustard Seed; Feeding the 5,000; and Walking to Emmaus. And of course, several

great songs!

Friends and community members are always welcome.

St. Matthew’s congregation reaches out in care and concern to a family in a difficult time

Help Support The Zeuskes with Your DonationsDan and Karen Zeuske are experiencing the biggest challenge in their lives. Dan has been struggling with prostate cancer, stage IV, which has spread to several other areas in his body. He has endured debilitating chemotherapy and living in pain, all the while being a dad and a husband.

Dan and Karen’s youngest son, Joseph, lives wtih prune belly syndrome and Dandy Walker Syndrome. He is limited in mobility and receives most of his nutrition through a feeding tube. Only his mom, dad, or a nurse can safely look after him.

As Dan’s endurance has suffered, Karen’s caretaking responsibilities have increased. Because Joseph has grown, a lift is needed to assist in his care, but it cannot be accommodated in the duplex where they live.

Medical costs are staggering, so moving to a larger apartment is not an option at this time.

Now is the time for us to embrace and nurture the Zeuske family through this fundraiser. They are most grateful for all the prayers and concern offered on their behalf.

Jesus said, Ò A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.Ó Ð Gospel of John 13:34-35

*If you want 100% of your donation to go to the Zeuskes, make out a check to St. Matthew’s and bring it to the church office.

Salvadoran Pastoral Team Needs Our Help - Your Donation Will Supply Food for Pastors During Economic Crisis The backbone of the Salvadoran Luthern church is its team of pastors and leaders who tirelessly and compassionately serve these communities, consoling families victimized by gang violence, comforting during sickness, finding resources for those who struggle with hunger. They are truly the hands and feet of Jesus, walking with the poor in humility and love. Now these pastors need our help. Many of them have not been paid since last fall. The Greater Milwaukee Synod Committee on El Salvador is working to raise funds to supply the pastoral body with three installments of basic food items to help them weather the crisis as the church works toward sustainability. Your donation, labeled “Salvadoran Pastor Food” will help make this compassionate response a reality. Please see the display in the Commons for more information. Thanks for your help!

Be sure to Add Back in SOONContinued by Popular Demand!Book Collection continues a few more weeks: We’re collecting books again for the “Milwaukee Working” agency which employs men in urban areas where jobs are scarceThis organization accepts donations of books of all kinds. Milwaukee Working is a faith-based non-profit aimed at creating jobs in the heart of one of the most improverished cities in America. For the next couple of weeks, bring your books; they will also accept CDs, DVDs, and games in good condition. Tax receipts available.
