We, the community of St. James, are a prayerful and Eucharistic people who treasure our Catholic traditions.

We strive to grow in our faith by being good stewards of the gifts God has given us; sharing God’s truth with all.

As the Body of Christ, we are called to love and serve every-one, especially the marginalized, with joy and hospitality.

Mass Intentions From the Pastor’s Pen As we journey into the month of July we here at St. James are gearing up for our Fall programs. We have every intent to begin our school year on August 19 at St. James School and also to begin our Fall RE programs as well as our Youth Ministry activities.

We are undertaking the necessary precautions and following the guidelines from the County, the CDC, and our Diocesan offices to enable us to offer these opportunities for our young people this Fall in our buildings.

Obviously, maintenance and disinfecting and sanitizing surfaces in areas used is going to be a 'constant' process (and expense). But we certainly want to support our parish families, in providing quality Catholic education, as well as our wonderful Faith formation opportunities for our young people and their parents.

These next few weeks we are celebrating First Communions with our young people who were scheduled to approach the Table of the Lord during the Easter season. Now, with new precautions, we will be welcoming them in Masses over the next couple weeks.

Also, once again our Knights of Columbus are offering a 'Curbside meal' – this time on Friday, July 31, with a pulled pork sandwich meal. Our parish is the benefactor of this fundraiser, the goal of which is to upgrade the technology in the church, making it much easier to have a high quality of broadcasting, particularly for our "Livestream Mass".

The attendance of our Livestream Mass has grown since the church was shutdown the end of March. Danny and our technolo-gist Quinn Knabe have brought livestreaming a long way in just a few months. We will continue to offer this Mass because so many homebound and those unable to attend Mass depend on it each and every week. It is such a blessing to them.

Naturally, the necessary technology is very expensive. The total cost of the upgrade that we would like to have would be $6,000. So, our K of C, who are so very generous in offering their gifts of stewardship to our parish, have agreed to support Quinn and Danny to be able to upgrade to the quality that we need.

So, please mark your calendar for Friday, July 31 for a great meal and a great opportunity to support our parish community along the way! And, if you cannot make it you can always send a donation, earmarked "technology upgrade", to the parish.

Blessings to you and your families.

Peace, Fr. Mike

Are you a good listener? I find myself asking this question more and more frequently, especially when trying to have any type of in-depth or even casual conversation. More

often than not there seems to be so many external dis-traction: texting and various social media platforms with alerts sounding on smart phones, televisions running nearly continuously, background music often played loudly, or a myriad of other noises, even the swirling noises found only in my mind such as the never ending to-do list. At times, I even find difficulty in blocking out all the ambient noise and distractions during my prayer time.

For Jewish people there are two prayers specifically commanded in the Torah: the Birkat Ha-Maxon which is the prayer of grace after meals and the Shema. The Shema is the oldest fixed daily prayer in Judaism and has been prayed morning and night since ancient times. This prayer consists of three parts and is prayed both liturgically, during morning and evening services, and in individual homes, with a series of passages included before going to bed at night. The first part begins with one of the best known and fundamental expressions of Jewish beliefs: “Sh'ma Yisra'eil Adonai Eloheinu Adonai echad. Hear, [O]Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One.” Perhaps you recognize these words as a passage found in the sixth chapter of Deuteronomy (v. 4). The scripture continues: “Therefore, you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today. Drill them into your children. Speak of them at home and abroad, whether you are busy or at rest. Bind them at your wrist as a sign and let them be as a pendant on your forehead. Write them on the door-posts of your houses and on your gates” (v. 5-9). I feel these words also proclaim a fundamental expression of what it means to be a Christian, yet I wonder how often I take the time to follow them. In my busyness do I seek out a place and time to just listen and hear the words God speaks to me? Where is that place where I can block out the noise and just listen?

The simplest answer for place is an easy answer for me: everywhere but especially in nature. To answer the sec-ond part of the question is more difficult: hear and listen, really listen without a ready reply forming in my mind. I think that is the whole point of the Deuteronomist teach-ing: hear, listen, take His words into the very center of my being, and follow them in word and deed. Let the words transform each of us into the body of Christ, so that we become a source of His love in the world. I hope you also find that place and listen.

Your Sister in Christ, Sandy Gagnon

Saturday Morning Faith Sharing Jesus and the End Times

A Catholic View of the End Times Begins July 18 - 10am in the Parish Hall

Have you ever wondered what the Bible teaches about what will happen at the End of Time?

In this detailed Bible study on the end times, Dr. Brant Pitre brings clarity and precision to the confusion that frequently surrounds the doctrine of the end times.

Please join us. We practice social distancing and have class in the parish hall - only 3 per table.

The Militia of the Immaculata meeting will be held prior to this class at 9:30am.

Thank You For Supporting HOPE

We so much appreciate your support of our HOPE Gift Card ministry.

HOPE is a win-win program. Your cost is no more than you would normally spend and St. James earns a profit.

HOPE Gift Cards can be purchased in the Parish Office Monday - Friday from 8:30 - 11:00am. If these hours are not convenient, please contact the parish office (816-781-4343 ext 200) and we will get in touch with you to arrange a safe drop/pickup.

The Knights Of Columbus Thank You …

A big thank you to everyone who sup-ported their Curbside Shrimp Boil last month. A total of 427 delicious shrimp and/or tilapia meals were served.

Coming up on Friday, July 31, the Knights will be holding another Curbside Meal event. The menu will be a pulled pork sandwich meal, complete with all the trimmings. Proceeds will go to upgrad-ing the video technology in the church.

Save the date! Details in next weekend's bulletin.

The Weeds Are Winning

Do you enjoy working outside in the yard? Do you have some free time? The weeds are prolific this year on the St. James grounds and we could sure use your help.

Consider joining our Garden Keepers team as we care for the landscaping here. Our normal work time is on Tuesday mornings but other times can be ac-commodated as well. No special skills required, just be able to do some common yard work like weeding, watering, deadheading, and pruning and if you have the strength, mulching .

If interested, please contact Gretchen Lathrop (816-223-6636)

Parish Religious Education First Communions

Please pray for the 83 students sched-uled to receive First Holy Communion in the upcoming weeks of July. These chil-dren are eager to receive the Body of Jesus, having waited an extended time after preparing.

The children will receive in special invitation only masses this year, which will be live-streamed on July 13, July 14 and July 27. Experiencing the gift given only in the Eucharist will far outweigh any re-striction or change the pandemic has put upon us this season.

Your prayers are requested that each child experi-ence Jesus as never before as they receive their First Holy Communion.

Hillcrest Hope Apartment We are in the process of welcoming a new family into the Hillcrest Hope apartment that is sponsored by St. James. Please pray for this couple and their teenage son, that they are successful in beginning this second chance as they have recently faced se-vere insecurity in their living situation.

We offer support to Hillcrest monetarily, as well as in furnishing and maintaining the apartment as needed. We take time to pray for, and even with, our supported residents. We can offer visits to those who request it and have opportunities to clean and restock the apartment between residents. Hillcrest also offers financial guidance and life-skills counsel-ing through their volunteers.

If you would like to be more active in this ministry, please contact Lori Tajchman.

A Big Thank You

The recent clothing/household goods drive, spon-sored by the St James Altar Society benefiting the Cornerstones of Care organization was a huge success.

Thanks to all who donated items and/or helped at this event. Cornerstones of Care greatly appreciated all that was given. Two BIG trucks came and picked it all up. Thanks also to Jeanne Greenwald for orga-nizing this and also to her wonderful grandsons who gave their time for helping.
