Sharon Men’s Club Profile Of The Month

GERALD “JERRY” KERZNER

Jerry was born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 7, 1936. His family moved to Gloversville, New York, just before his first birthday. The town got its name because it was once the capital of America's glove making industry with over two hundred manufacturers in Gloversville and Johnstown providing fashion and military style hand wear. The vast majority of residents worked at the factories.

He attended Gloversville High School and scored 100 in a state-administered math achievement test. Jerry was the only student to have ever accomplished that feat. He graduated GHS in 1954 and continued his education at the University of Michigan (Tom Brady’s alma mater) graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science and Engineering in Metallurgy.

Jerry enlisted in the New York State Air National Guard and entered the U.S. Air Force taking his basic training at Lockland Air Force Base near San Antonio, Texas. He was then shipped to Chanute Air Force Base near Chicago

and was trained as a welder, a trade that helped him during his professional career. He completed his active service at the end of six months and was in the reserve for the next 5½ years.

Jerry started his first job, in 1960, at the Reynolds Metal Company in Messina, New York, up at the Canadian border. The warmest it got in the month of January was +7 degrees Fahrenheit, prompting him to leave there in 1962. He found a new job in New Jersey working for AIRCO as a welding process

engineer. While there, he met his future bride, Jeanne. Although they were dating, he came to Boston in 1966 for a position as Plant Metallurgist with New England Metallurgical Company directing heat treating procedures and operations.

During the summer of 1966, Jerry left his job in Boston at 5:00 p.m. on Fridays and drove to New Jersey to see Jeanne returning at 2:30 a.m. Monday morning to Boston. After three months if this driving craziness, he asked her to marry him and she said “YES!” She came up to Boston and they were married on October 2, 1966. They bought a home in Sharon in 1968 and still reside there.

Jerry started a new job in 1973 with Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation working with power stations and the nuclear industry until 1993. He then became a metallurgist/consultant for Thielsch Engineering in Cranston, Rhode Island. In 1998, he joined Altran Solutions in Boston in the same capacity

and was there until 2005. He still does some consulting work from time to time as requested by former employers and friends and contacts.

Jerry and Jeanne have been blessed with a son, Steven, and a daughter, Anne. They have five grandchildren and three granddogs and enjoy every minute they can spend with them.

Jeanne is an RN and worked at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital Emergency Room. One of her patients was Bobby Orr, the great hockey star of the Boston Bruins, who had knee surgery. She stopped working when her daughter, Anne, was born. When the children were old enough, she went back to working part-time at the Charwell Nursing Home in Norwood as a nursing supervisor. She retired in 2001.

Jerry joined the Sharon Men’s Club in 2011. He is a member of our phone squad and plays pool and golf with club members. “I’m happy with less than 90 for 18 holes,” said Jerry. His favorite sport is sailing, having spent overnighters in Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Block Island and Provincetown and sailing around Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Jerry’s main hobby is gardening, flowers and vegetables. Some friends who have eaten his tomatoes say that they are “absolutely the best and tastiest that we have ever eaten.” Jerry attributes that to the “special” mixture, soil and other ingredients put together for their planting and the attention the plants get from him during the growing season.

Glad to have you aboard, Jerry.
