The CONFIRMED Life in Christ

It’s that time of year again… graduations… confirmations… our loved ones coming to an end of an era.

However, if we are honest, we know quite well that “graduation” does not mean the end of education. If we

are even more honest, “confirmation” does not mean the end of our Christian education – and even more so –

our lives lived out for Christ on a daily bases. On May 20th

(Pentecost Sunday) nine of our junior youth will

receive the blessing of confirmation and their first communion. This marks the beginning of their lives as a

communicant member at Christ Lutheran Church. More so, this marks the beginning of their opportunity to

serve their fellow Christ Lutheran members and community as a Christian who is fed regularly with the

strength provided in God’s true body and blood given at the Holy Eucharist.

The Lord’s Supper is God’s precious gift of the forgiveness of sins for those who receive it worthily. It is

also a strengthening and sustaining meal that all Christians should partake of regularly. For this reason, Holy

Communion is an important part of the “ongoing” Christian life. Since we encounter struggles and

difficulties on a regular basis, we should also encounter the Lord’s Supper just as often. The Lord provides

this medicine of immortality for our sake. Dear Christians… take advantage of it.

Below are those confirmation vows you spoke before the Lord’s altar – perhaps many years ago. Be

reminded that our confession was also a promise of fidelity to our Lord. Let’s review this confessional

promise together…

Do you this day, in the presence of God and of this Christian congregation, confirm the solemn covenant

which at your Baptism you make with the Triune God?

Do you, then, renounce the devil and all his works and all his ways?

Do you believe in God the Father?

Do you believe in God the Son?

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

Do you hold all the canonical books of the Bible to be the inspired Word of God, and the doctrine of the

Evangelical Lutheran Church, drawn from the Bible, as you have learned to know it from Luther’s Small

catechism, to be the true and correct one?

Do you intend faithfully to conform all your life to the rule of the divine Word, to be diligent in the use of the

means of grace, to walk as it becometh the Gospel of Christ, and in faith, word and deed to remain true to

the Triune God, even unto death?

Celebrate your identity as a fellow believer with our brand new confirmands on May 20th

at the 10:45 A.M.

Service. Included in this issue of The Shepherd’s Staff are brief confirmation essays written by the 2018

class. Read them, and then meet our class face to face on Pentecost. May God richly bless you and keep you

in your “Confirmed” faith.

Pastor Arnold

Pentecost (May 20th) Pentecost is the last of the 3 major festivals of the church year (Christmas and Easter being the first two). At Christmas, God the Father sends His Son into the world, born as a baby in Bethlehem. At Easter, the Son rises from the dead, gaining our victory over sin, death, and the devil. At Pentecost, the Father and the Son send the Holy Spirit to give the gifts of Christ’s redemption to us. In commemoration of this day, our parish-family bestows the rite of youth confirmation and adorns our chancel with geraniums, to name a few of our customs. In Pentecost* by Lutheran poet Kathryn Ann Hill, this celebration of Christ’s sending of the Holy Spirit is put in the context of the Old Testament background (Exodus 19:7-8; 31:18-32:20) now brought to fulfillment in our times: Each word the Lord has spoken we will do—this vow by Israelites did not prove true: As Moses took two tablets from God’s hand, already they transgressed His first command.

After God freed Israel from Egyptian slavery, they vowed to keep every word the Lord commanded them. Moses received God’s will for His people etched in stone in the Ten Commandments. The very first commandment is “You shall have no other gods.” And that includes golden calves! By worshipping a manmade golden calf, the Israelites provoked God’s jealous wrath: He threatened to consume His chosen race till Moses brought to mind His promised grace. In Moses the Israelites had an intercessor, someone to remind God of His promise to His people. God had mercy on His people instead of destroying them. He fed them in the wilderness and brought them to the Promised Land. How did they respond? If only the golden calf was their only idol! God’s nation later lusted after Baal, whose noisy, leaping prophets could but fail, For God consumed Elijah’s sacrifice, a token of redemption’s fearsome price. God defeated Israel’s idol again in Elijah’s day (1 Kings 18:16-40). God’s fire descended on that day to show God victorious. His fire comes down again at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-42) to make something new: To men of undivided heart there came at Pentecost the Holy Spirit’s flame, Imbuing them with all-consuming zeal to preach, baptize, and give His holy meal. And these gifts are the heart of Pentecost. Tongues of fire, speaking in tongues, and miraculous healings were a spectacular sight. These all fade away and we’re left with the real miracles we still have today: preaching, baptism, the sacrament of the altar. The Holy Spirit is working in these miracles in our times. Pentecost lives on. That people of all nations, far and near, might grow in faith by each true word they hear Forsaking every false god for the One whose love they know in Jesus Christ, the Son. From false gods, our God still delivers us. We’re not left in the dark about who He is. God reveals Himself to us in the giving of His Son on the cross. In this, we know God’s love. Receiving the gifts of Pentecost makes His love to be our own. In Christ’s Service, Pastor Froiland *Kathryn Ann Hill, Rich in Grace, Delhi, NY: American Lutheran Publicity Bureau, 2007. Pg. 77

5 Years from Now (Confirmands)

On Sunday, May 20th, we celebrate the Festival of Pentecost. In the 10:45AM Service on

that day, nine of our young people will repeat and re-affirm their Baptismal Vows as The

Rite of Confirmation is celebrated and they receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion and

are received as communicant members of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod and of this

parish. Recently Pastor Arnold asked each of our Confirmands to write a brief essay

entitled, “Where I hope to be in my spiritual life five years from now.” We would like to

share with you these essays:

Lynsey Carnes – Five years from now in my spiritual life I hope to still be part of a church.

Understand more about God and the important lessons he gave us. I hope to believe that I am still

a part of Jesus’ kingdom. I also hope to still be praying in God’s name and for him to help me be

the person I want to be. I want to be true to God’s values.

Chadron Cummins – In five years I would still like to be a member of the church. Also to keep God

first in everything I do. And want to keep my faith and always remember that Christ died on the

cross for my sins.

Kendal Obie - Five years from now in my spiritual life I hope to be in school studying to be what I

want to do in the future. Also that I can reread the stories of the bible. Then to continue going to

church. Finally I want to be having a successful life, learn more about the bible and continue to

learn about God.

Avery Penn - Five years from now in my spiritual life I hope to have a stronger connection with

God and a better understanding of his teachings. I hope to become more united with God and be

able to attend church more often. I also hope to become more involved with the church community

and help others. I as well hope to understand what God does for me and be more thankful.

Alexia Pope - Five years from now in my spiritual life I hope to be more involved in the church. I

hope that my father takes my siblings and I to church more during those five years. Since this is 5

years from now I will have graduated high school and be in college. In college is still want to be

practicing my faith so I will hopefully find a church wherever my college is.

Mason Rogers – Five years from now in my spiritual life I hope to write raps and read the bible and

write raps about spiritual holidays such as Good Friday and Easter Sunday. I also hope to go to

church and take communion with the congregation in the future to receive the forgiveness of sins

from God. I also hope to stay at this church because this is where I was baptized and if I move I will

get to a Lutheran church to continue my beliefs.

Avery Rothert - Five years from now in my spiritual life I hope to be actively going to a Christian

church. I also hope to be involved in a bible study. I hope to be surrounded by a group of

Christian friends at the college I attend. I would like to go to Maple Woods and swim on a club

team.

Sarah Vincenti – Five years from now in my spiritual life I hope to be confirmed by then and be a

consistent member in church, and coming to church regularly. I hope to have a bible study group to

be in, and learn God’s word every day. To help through tough times to good times. To share the

good news of great joy to others that know God and those who don’t know the Lord as we do,

(who see him) as horrible or unforgiving, or don’t know God at all. To be a strong Christian

believer.

Joe Winfrey - Five years from now in my spiritual life I want to stay going to church probably here.

I say that for I’m planning on going out of state for college. So I plan in five years to acolyte at the

church as much as I can until college or death do its part. I also want to keep God in mind and first

before anything – sports, school studies – and know he is with me.

Christ Lutheran Church & Tithe.ly

You might be asking what Tithe.ly is. Well, it’s an online tithing platform that allows you to give

directly from your computer or smartphone. You can use this completely free service to give online

once while on vacation or to setup recurring online tithing.

How does Tithe.ly work?

It’s quite simple, just download the free app from either the Apple App Store for iPhone or the Google

Play Store for Android. When you download the app just follow the directions to create an account.

Add a preferred payment method (debit card or bank account). Then you can use the search tool to find

our church, just search for “Christ Lutheran Church” and you’ll see our church in the results (just look

for the address). Once you select our church you can choose to give once or setup recurring tithing.

Recurring payment cycles can occur every week, every 2 weeks, every month, or every 1st & 15

th

monthly.

Again, this service is completely free, although you have the option to cover processing fees. You do

not have to setup online giving but based off recommendations from our members, we decided to offer

this option. Feel free to utilizing online giving and automated tithing via Tithe.ly but it’s not required.

If you do decide to use Tithe.ly and don’t plan to use offering envelopes, please let a pastor know.

Greetings from Christ Lutheran Pre-K.

As the school year comes to an end, we reflect on how the children have grown socially, academically,

but most of all spiritually.

The children have learned their colors, shapes, numbers, letters, letter sounds, and writing their

numbers & letters. Some of them are even reading!! They have learned all about Jesus and his

miracles and they love to share what they have learned with their family.

Our spring program was a huge hit with the parents and the kids did great. Most of the kids love

performing on the stage in the gym. Thank you to Mrs. Karla Perkowski, Mrs. Sue Daley, and Mrs.

Kristina Fredde for all of their hard work to make the program a success.

This month the 5 year old Pre – K classes will have preschool graduation and boy are they excited.

They have practiced all month in their classrooms and then on the stage in the gym. It’s hard to

believe these kids will be going to kindergarten in the fall. Thank you to Mrs. Kassulke and Mrs.

Buchholz for all of their hard work to make graduation a huge hit.

We hope you have a great summer and we will see you in August for another AMAZING school year.

Blessings,

Mrs. Kristina Fredde

A Stewardship Lesson from God’s Word …1 Peter 2:9-10

St. Paul teaches, “Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches” (Galatians 6:6). And again, he says, “Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel” (1 Corinthians 9:13–14). In other words, ministers of the gospel are supported by the offerings of those who are served by them. And this is how the Church lives even now. It is standard practice. But this deserves closer examination. For it instructs us not just that we are to give but also what we are to give. And it does so with four little words: “In the same way …” St. Paul is building his case for supporting the preachers of the Gospel with the sacrificial giving of individual members on the example of the Old Testament people who supported the Levites with their offerings and sacrifices. We’re to support the Gospel ministry “in the same way.” But how did the Old Testament people support the Levites? Moses records this: “You shall tithe all the yield of your seed that comes from the field year by year. And before the Lord your God, in the place that he will choose, to make his name dwell there, you shall eat the tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and flock, that you may learn to fear the Lord your God always” (Deuteronomy 14:22–23). The Levites were supported by the tithe, 10 percent of all the yearly yield of that which was harvested. Does that seem like a lot? Does it surprise you that St. Paul instructs us that we are to support the New Testament Gospel ministry “in the same way?” If it does, ask yourself: is the Church’s job in the New Testament bigger or smaller than the Levites’ job in the Old Testament? Back then there was one Temple, and the ministry was almost exclusively located in one nation among the descendants of Abraham. Jesus calls us to teach and baptize all nations (Matt. 28). And there are churches and ministries all around the world. How could we support this new Gospel ministry with anything less than the Israelites supported the Old Testament ministry? Of course, we are free to give more, for we have received more than those in the Old Testament. We have received the fullness of God’s revelation, the fullness of His salvation, the fulfillment of everything that God promised to do. For we have received Christ, God’s own Son, in the flesh, who took upon himself our sins and in exchange gave us his righteousness. The Father claimed us as his own in Holy Baptism. He gathers us together in the place where his name dwells to feast on the first fruits of the resurrection, the risen and living body and blood of his Son, our Lord, Jesus. He reminds us that we are His, that all things are ours because we belong to Him. He blesses us here in time with physical and spiritual gifts. In the same way, and in response to his fatherly divine goodness and mercy, we gladly give to those who proclaim to us “the excellencies of him who called us out of darkness and into his marvelous light. For once we were not a people, but now we are God’s people; once we had not received mercy, but now we have indeed” (1 Peter 2:9–10).
