The seven men, most wearing tailored suits and dress shoes, boarded the plane the old-fashioned way. Walking across the tarmac, careful not to walk over the line that separated passenger tra c from the earmu -wearing air tra c controllers, they boarded the plane one by one, strapped in and ew o to a place few travel to from America: Havana, Cuba.
A scene from Obama's latest visit to Cuba? Or was it a team sent from President Eisenhower's administration? Neither. is was during the days of George W. Bush, when it was still illegal to conduct commerce on the island if you were a U.S. citizen. Besides? Who wanted to go to a place that people were literally dying to leave? Shouldn't the tra c be going the other way?
ey came in on a tech-nicality, as religious hu-manitarian relief workers. Once in Havana, the six men with their jackets draped over their arm waved the other gentle-man, clad in jeans and a white safari shirt, through the customary screening room first. "Separate
parties," explained one of the men.
e man had his papers examined as a close-talk-ing guard asked for his plans and purpose for vis-iting Cuba.
"I'm here on a humani-tarian mission."
"Here?" asked the Cuban of f icia l . He seemed stunned. "What makes you think Castro and Cuba need your help?" Before the man could answer, the o cial ordered him o to a separate waiting room, told to sit and wait so they talk more "in a bit."
e o cial waved the other men over.
"And what is your reason for visiting Cuba?"
One man took the lead, stood straight in front of the guard, held his chin up and flashed a genuine smile.
"We are here to drink your rum and smoke your cigars, sir."
e guard stared back at him with a stern face that gradually lit up into a return smile.
"My friends ... welcome to Havana, Cuba."
Last year, more than 150 men came the other way ... they fled Cuba by any means possible, though most ran from the team
hotels whenever they had the chance to play baseball o the island. ey defect for a dream, and they wish to make it in the big leagues, just like Minnie Minoso, Tony Perez, Tony Oliva, Luis Tiant, Jose Canseco, Rafael Palmeiro. ey want to walk through the big ball orchards in the Bronx, LA or Chicago ... anywhere they can play the game they felt they were born to play.
Most players in the majors remember di erent times, times the rum and cigars couldn't possibly compare to the life those travelers had left in America. ey remember their teachers telling them to shut their eyes and ask God to provide them with lunch that day, only to open them and see an empty plate staring back up at them. The plate would remain empty until they were instructed to do the same thing, only this time to ask Castro for food, opening their eyes to a plate full of black beans and rice.
ey remember playing under spotty light, the watchful eyes of fans and Castro's men. ey escaped on makeshift rafts, hid under trucks and buses, spent everything they had. ey, too, had a mission ... just a chance to walk in through a gate and hear the stern-looking o cial bark the following command to them:
"Play ball!" Welcome to America.Mark Vasto is a veteran
sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

Girl Scout Troop #8653 of Southern Illinois is a new troop that was established at the end of January. Because of their late start, they were only able to participate in Cookie Booth Sales. The Troop decided to give their customers an option of do-nating to a group of Marines that are at sea. ey set a goal of 50 boxes, to be col-lected for the service men
and women. A er the three weekends of booth sales the troop collected 80 boxes of various kinds of Girl Scout cookies to send to the Marines . Each troop member made a thank you card for the Marines to send with the cookies. Cookies were mailed March 27 and will take 6-8 weeks to reach the Marines.

I haven't the words to express enough heartfelt sympathy to the family of Timothy "Tim" Scott Beaty of Carbondale, Illinois, for-merly of Centralia. Tim was the son of Don Beaty and Kittie McMillan. He is sur-vived by both parents along with wife Jessica Beaty and son Jacob as well as sisters Jennifer and Erin. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, step-brothers and stepsisters.
We at the Shoppers Weekly wish we could do more for lifelong friend Don Beaty and his family, but what we can do is set the record straight and tell the real story of a very brave young man, 41 years old, that gave his life pro-tecting two Southern Illinois University (SIU) female students.
Timothy "Tim" Scott Beaty's life was tragically taken at 4:20 a.m. on March 27. e original story was that Tim died from a stray bullet while asleep in his bed. e Carbondale police were alerted to the incident by an individual that found shell casings near the inter-section of West Walnut and South Beveridge Streets in Carbondale that lead to the discovery of Beaty's body early Easter Sunday morning, March 27.
But then the truth came out about Tim's final moments (in someone else's words) that is nearly beyond comprehension. Tim had died as he had lived. He was not only com-passionate but fearless in his desire to help others, as he had demonstrated his entire life. It wasn't long before the truth began spreading, refuting the original story of a stray bullet that allegedly struck Tim in his bed while sleep-ing, which wasn't true! e truth was Tim had opened his apartment door to two young, female SIU students
seeking shelter a er eeing the neighboring house party once shots were red. Beaty was killed while pro-tecting them and shielding them with his own body.
When friend and fellow musician Andrew Staff heard the truth he said, " at was just Tim being Tim."
So where does this leave grieving family and friends? ey now know the truth, but they already knew their son, husband, father, family member, friend, and giving community member. ey know he was always doing something for someone. He danced to his own drum, literally. He was a hero to many and a superhero to all humanity.
Tim's nal moments of bravery and selflessness didn't surprise anyone; it was the way he lived.
At this time there have been three arrests made in this tragic event, and one arrest is pending. ree of the suspects are from the St. Louis, MO area. The fourth suspect, who is from Carbondale, is still being sought.
So in the end, the ques-tion remains: Why? I haven't the answer. I don't think anyone does. But I do know there is something we can all do in honor of Timothy "Tim" Scott Beaty's memory, and that's to help his ve-year-old son Jacob whose very own welfare has been put in jeopardy by his father's untimely and hor-ri c, violent death.
ere has been a trust fund set up at Peoples National Bank. You can contribute to: Tim Beaty's Memorial Trust, c/o Peoples National Bank, 901 West Broadway, Centralia IL 62801. Donations can be made in person at any branch of Peoples National Bank. An online donation is active at www.beatytrust.com.
is is the best way we can say to Tim as he said to so many, "I've got your back."
Tim, we have Jacob's back!

America is facing an eco-nomic disaster! And we are the only ones who can do anything about it. Let me explain.
In the last thirty years or so the country's debt has risen to the point that we are headed for a total collapse. e na-tional de cit recently hit nine-teen trillion dollars. at is money we have borrowed and pay interest on. It is owed to approximately twelve di erent entities including China, Japan, Belgium, and Brazil plus the U.S. Federal Reserve, the U.S. Social Security trust fund, U.S. individuals and institutions.
Keep in mind that a thou-sand million is equal to one billion and it takes a thousand billion to equal one trillion. at is a drop in the bucket compared to the unfunded liabilities that are owed. Un-funded liabilities consist of money owed but there is no money available to pay for them. ese debts are esti-mated to be about another 200 trillion dollars.
Remember I said earlier that we were the only ones that can do something about it. No, we can't be expected to pay for it. What is more im-portant is what created this massive debt. We the people elect the President and Con-gress. e Supreme Court is appointed by the President and must be approved by Congress. e people we elect actually run this country on our behalf. Obviously they are not very good at it.
Let me point it out to you this way: Our founding fathers who adopted the Dec-laration of Independence, e Constitution and e Bill of Rights were not politicians. ey were individuals from all walks of life just like you and me. Their fathers had
migrated before them to America, the land of freedom and opportunity. As a matter of fact, of the 75 individuals who signed the Constitution, 67 were born in this country.
ey formed this nation as a republic of the people, for the people and by the people. A republic is a form of govern-ment in which power is ex-plicitly vested in the people, who in turn exercise their power through elected repre-sentatives. Today the terms republic or democracy are virtually interchangeable, but historically the two di ered. My point is that nowhere in any of the aforementioned documents does the word democracy appear.
So today we seem to no longer have a government of the people, for the people and by the people, but one that is of the politicians, for the politicians and by the politi-cians.
So why are they so con-cerned about saving their political parties? To my way of thinking, due to the debt they have placed upon this nation, they could only be thinking of themselves. e representative and senators make a basic salary of $174,000 per year. Majority and minority leaders make $193,400. e President Pro-Tempore makes $223,500 and the Vice President (President of the Senate) makes $230,200. They do not participate in Obamacare but receive the same health insurance bene- ts as all federal employees and enjoy some of the lowest rates in the nation. ey have a personal sta allowance for employees that can range any-where from 26 to 60 staff members with maximum pay topping at $156,848 per year. In addition they have an expense allowance covering
job related expenses such as stationery, business cards, newsletters, domestic travel and lodging, and communica-tion expenses. Plus they have free mail expenses and to add icing to the cake, they get free use of any military aircra for foreign travel.
All of this and they can retire a er only one term at full pay. None of these items include the bribes (oops!) contributions they receive from lobbyists (who by the way out-number the Congress members in Washington) or the huge corporations. I guess this explains why they end up as multi-millionaires. The problem with this is that they are owned by the contributors, and power and greed enter the picture.
Albert Einstein, considered to be a genius, once said, "If you keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect a di erent result, it is insanity." I think this could very well apply, that is you continue to vote the same over and over again and expect di erent results; that too is insanity.
If you are thinking of Hillary for President I hope you are aware of the following. How many people close to the Clintons have died? Ask the question on Google search. Hillary sold uranium to Russia and by some strange coincidence the Russian gov-ernment donated millions to the Clinton Foundation. Just thought you might like to know before you decide. Per-sonally, I don't know which is worse, her or Obama.

Warning: Unless your Righteousness Exceeds
Whenever I hear or see a warning, I pay attention, for it could save my life. Whenever Jesus gives a warning, I really
pay attention! Listen to Jesus’ grave warning, “For I say to you, that unless your righteous-ness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew
5:20) ese religious Jews were radical adherents of the law of Moses. ey displayed their fervor by prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. But Jesus called them hypocrites and warned us not to be like them. He told us that if our righteousness did not exceed theirs, we would not enter the kingdom of heaven. But how can our righteousness exceed the zealous religious scribes and Pharisees?
FAITH ALONE IS A MARK OF RIGHTOUSNESS. ey missed the mark because they believed keeping the law of Moses and their good works made them righteous. The scriptures teach that Abraham was not made righteous by the law, but by faith alone. “Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righ-teousness.” (Romans 4:1-12) Only faith in the sacri ce of Christ on the cross can atone for sin and make one righteous. (Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 3:21-22) By the works of the law no one if justi ed.
FERVENT HEARTFELT PRAYER IS A MARK OF THE RIGHTEOUS. e Pharisees prayed long prayers, dressed in long robes, standing on the street corners to be seen of men. Jesus said they had their reward. “But when you pray . . . pray to your Father who sees in secret and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” (Matthew 5:5-8) Jesus gave the parable of the despised tax-collector who prayed. He would not even look up to heaven but smote his breast and prayed, “God be merciful to me a sinner.” Jesus said, “I tell you this man went down to his house justi ed rather than the other who exalts himself.” (Luke 18:9-14) e righteous have power in prayer. “Confess your trespasses to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. e e ec-tive, fervent prayer of a righ-teous man avails much.” (James
5:16)FASTING WITH SINCER-
ITY IS A MARK OF THE RIGHTEOUS. e Pharisees practiced fasting but with wrong motives. ey put on a sad countenance and appeared pious in their fasting to be admired by men. Jesus said, “When you fast . . . wash your face so that you do not appear to men . . . but to your Father who is in the secret place and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” (Matthew 6:16-18)
FEEDING THE POOR AND NEEDY OUT OF COM-PASSION IS A MARK OF THE RIGHTEOUS. e Pharisees gave alms to the poor and needy, but Jesus condemned them. “Take heed that you do not your charitable deeds before men to be seen by them. Otherwise, you have no reward from your Father in heaven. Therefore... do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites. Do not let your le hand know what your right hand is doing... and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.” (Matthew 6:1-4) Cornelius, a Roman centurion, was a devout man who prayed, fasted, and gave alms. God took note and sent Peter to share the Good News of Christ. Cornelius and his whole household came into the blessings of salvation. (Acts 10)
Jesus gave us a warning that we dare not ignore. “Unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” Repent and put faith in the nished work of Christ on the cross. Pray, fast, and give out of compassion and the Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

Centralia, Illinois was named a 2015 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to e ective urban forest management.
Started in 1976, the Tree City USA program, spon-sored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S . Forest Service a n d t h e N a t i o n a l Association of State Foresters is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year.
Centralia achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program's four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual com-
munity forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
"Tree City USA commu-nities see the impact an urban forest has in a com-munity first hand," said Dan Lambe, President of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of com-munity pride, whether it's through volunteer engage-ment or public education.''
Trees provide multiple bene ts to a community when properly planted and maintained. ey help to improve the visual appeal
of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide wildlife habitat, among many other bene ts.
More information on the program is available at ar-borday.org/TreeCityUSA
About the Arbor Day .Foundation: e Arbor Day Foundation is a million member nonpro t conser-vation and education orga-nization with the mission to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. More information is avail-able at arborday.org.
CENTRALIA NAMED A 2015 TREE CITY USA
Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois will join other Girl Scouts throughout the country to celebrate one of the Girl Scouts' most trea-sured resources during the month of April – the Girl Scout volunteers.
Every day, Girl Scout volunteers bring girls ex-
periences lled with fun, friendship, discovery, and so much more. at's why Girl Scouts join with Points of Light, the world's largest organization dedi-cated to volunteer service, to celebrate the contribu-tion of volunteers during National Volunteer Week which is April 10-16, 2016. In addition, Girl Scouts will celebrate their leaders during Girl Scout Leader’s Day on April 22.
With love, patience, and a deep dedication to en-riching the lives of girls everywhere, these incred-ible leaders give of their time every day to mentor girls, inspire them, and help them discover the world around them and the spark inside them. Girl Scout leaders say they "think that 's pretty awesome!"
In 2015, Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois’ 4,500 volunteers donated an average of 420 hours each to help provide 13,000 girls a premier Girl Scout Leadership Experience. e estimated dollar value of volunteer time provided is $45,511,200.
“Our volunteers are an invaluable resource in pro-viding a premier Girl S c o u t L e a d e r s h i p Experience to girls in Southern Illinois,” said Villie M. Appoo, GSSI CEO. “ eir dedication to the mission of building girls of courage, confi-dence and character who make the world a better place helps guide and en-courage future leaders.”
The mission of Girl Scouting states: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, con dence, and
character who make the world a better place. Girl Scouts is the world's pre-eminent organization dedicated solely to girls - all girls - where, in an ac-cepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with com-mitted adults, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives - like strong values, social con-science, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.
Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois is a not-for-pro t organization supported by various United Ways throughout the region. Girl Scouts is a Proud Partner of United Way.

Top News StoriesOf e Week:
• Last main Brussels and Paris suspect arrested, threat remains.
• Bernie Sanders and Ted Cruz look to gain ground in the West.
• Democratic delegates vs. super delegates.
• Presidential primaries: update as of April 9, 2016.
Delegate results: Democrats.
2,383 needed for nomi-nation. 1,955 still available.
Pledged delegates 1,280 1,030
Super delegates 469 31
Total 1,749 1,061
Pledged delegates are based on state primary results, while super dele-gates can support any can-didate. Keep in mind del-egate results aren't final until the convention in July.
So, to date, take away the super delegates and Clinton is only 219 delegates ahead.
For you Clinton support-ers, this one hasn't been as easy as you thought it might be!
Bernie has won 8 of the last 9 states!
So, who's on track for the Republican Party?
Tracking candidates' progress requires more than
straight delegate counts. The estimated delegates each candidate would need in each primary contest to win the nomination and the latest results for who's on track and who's falling behind are as follows:
Trump758 delegates won.
Cruz 499 delegates won.
Kasich144 delegates won.
ese calculations above don't include Saturday results.
T h e W y o m i n g Democratic presidential caucus was held Saturday, April 9 with Bernie Sanders taking the state. Bernie took 7 and Clinton garnished 11. Go gure that one! How did he get less delegates?
On the Republican side, it was Cruz and falling behind, Donald Trump.
e bottom line is Trump needs to take 61% of the delegates left; Cruz ap-proximately 87% and Kasich 135% to clinch the Republican nomination. Just a note, Cruz is out steal-ing delegates. Is this elec-tion about the peoples' will?
Over the weekend Clinton and Sanders are back to their "Brooklyn, NY roots." is week the cam-paign goes to the heat of the battle—Brooklyn battling out who has the strongest ties, but trust neither Sanders or Clinton are in touch with reality (Imagine that!). Be sure and watch this ursday's Democratic debate between Clinton and
Sanders.On to Paris terror
suspect, Mohamed Abrini was arrested in Belgium over the weekend.
Six people were arrested Friday in total including Abrini, suspected of being the man in the hat in the Brussels attacks, seen in an airport surveillance video moments before two deadly terror attacks in Brussels.
Authorities can now question him about the Brussels airport bombings on March 22, part of the attacks that killed 32. Europe has a very heavy Muslim population!
On a closing note a friend told me on Sunday that he had read that Obama has endorsed Hillary. It made my day, because in my opinion if he had, it gave many intelligent thinking humans one more of the 101 reasons NOT to vote for Hillary. On further re-search I couldn't con rm the endorsement. Oh well, one can only hope!
In closing, let me recom-mend that all Christians see the movie God Is Not Dead #2. As Christians we are under siege. In the constitu-tion and the Declaration of Independence it says nothing about the phrase "Separation of Church and State."
It's time to take back our Christian rights!

Even at 102 years of age, Centralia resident James "Jimmy" Adams shows no signs of letting up on his decades-long e orts to nd a solution to the railroad tra c that comes into Centralia and blocks intersections that cause emergency vehicles to be delayed in a crisis. Joined with fel low Centralia resident Nathan Rothschild, Mr. Adams met with Rep. John Cavaletto to discuss the next step in this process which is finding the funding to have a study conducted by the Illinois D e p a r t m e n t o f Transportation (IDOT).
“I appreciate the knowledge and expertise Mr. Adams and Mr. Rothschild bring to this safety concern. Centralia is lucky to have such dedicated residents who continue to keep this issue at the forefront,” commented Rep. John Cavaletto, member of both the Appropriations – P u b l i c S a f e t y Committee and the T r a n s p o r t a t i o n : Regulation, Roads &
Bridges Committee in the House. “We look forward to the day that the resi-dents and emergency personnel can move around the city without delays and people can get to the hospital as quickly as possible and re per-sonnel can get to emer-gency situations to help,” he added.
A study by transporta-tion experts and engi-neers would con rm that there is a congestion problem and what options are available to alleviate this congestion. Some have suggested constructing an overpass or underpass at key inter-sections in the city while others suggest the best long-term solution is to move the train tracks so they do not wind through residential areas.
e meeting this week was a follow-up to the October 2015 on-site meeting at the rail line to observe actual trains m o v i n g t h r o u g h Centralia and observe the impact on the flow of traffic. In light of the state's current nancial
crisis, there have been no dollars available for the study by engineers. ere now seems to be a pos-sibility for obtaining funding through a federal grant program known as the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act) designed to address "congestion mitigation." As soon as the rules are establish on that grant process, the goal is to apply for monies to pay for this crucial congestion study.

Molded SaladsI'm one that doesn't think a meal is complete without a side salad. As a matter of
fact, I've been known to make a whole meal of a beautiful, healthy salad, a little french bread and a glass of Chardonnay. What could be better! However, some of my favor-ites are molded salads. Below are some of my favorites. ere's nothing more refresh-ing in the warm spring and summer days to come than a cool, molded salad.
Molded Cucumber Salad1 cucumber, pared and diced 2 tsp. un avored gelatin1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 cup cold water1/2 sweet pimiento, diced 1 cup cream, whipped1/2 tsp. lemon juice
Combine cucumber, salt, pimiento and lemon juice. Soak gelatin in cold water 5 minutes; dissolve over hot water and mix thoroughly with whipped cream. Add cu-cumber mixture and pour into molds. Chill. Serves 4.
Jellied Salmon Mold1 cucumber 1/2 tsp. saltSmall bottle stu ed olives 3/4 cup mayonnaise1 package aspic gelatin 1½ cups cooked red salmon1 cup boiling water 1 cup diced celery1/3 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup diced green pepper1/2 cup cold water 1/2 T. minced onion
Pare cucumber, scoop out center and ll with olives. Dissolve aspic in boiling water. Add lemon juice, cold water and salt. Chill until it begins to thicken. Beat in mayon-naise gradually. Pour layer of aspic mixture into oiled loaf pan or mold. When rm arrange a layer of salmon, celery, green pepper and onion, and place stu ed cucumber in center. Cover with another layer of the aspic mixture, a layer of salmon, celery, green pepper and onion, repeating until cucumber is covered. Chill until rm. Serve on crisp lettuce. Garnish with parley, lemon sections, cucumber slices and radish roses. Serves 8.
Sparkling Fruit Mold1 package lime gelatin 1 cup sliced peaches2 cups boiling water Chicory1 orange 2 small clusters grapes1 cup canned pineapple cubes
Dissolve gelatin in boiling water and chill until it begins to set. Pare orange, leaving none of the white skin. Cube. Add orange and drained pineapple and peaches to gelatin, reserving a few peach slices for garnishing. Pour into a mold and chill until rm. Unmold on bed of chicory and garnish with peach slices and grapes. Serves 8.
Variation 1: Use only 1 cup boiling water. Cool mixture and add 1 cup ginger ale. Use lemon or orange gelatin.
Variation 2: Use sliced apricots and seedless grapes instead of orange and peaches.
Chicken and Olive Loaf2 T. un avored gelatin 1/3 cup sliced stu ed olives1/2 cup cold water 1/3 cup shredded almonds3 cups chicken stock 1 cup diced celery1/2 tsp. salt 2 cups diced cooked chicken1 T. lemon juice
So en gelatin in cold water 5 minutes and dissolve in hot stock. Add salt and lemon juice. Chill until it begins to thicken. Fold in olives, almonds, celery and chicken. Turn into loaf pan and chill until rm. Unmold. Serves 6.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS 2016 SCHEDULE
Ordering a hot dog. It’s a time-honored tradition for the three million plus Cardinals fans that throng to Busch Stadium every spring and summer. So is complementing it with ketchup and mustard. But this season, home games will feature some exciting new options: Original All-Purpose and BBQ Sauces from Country Bob’s, “ e Signature Sauce of the St. Louis Cardinals.”
“We are beyond thrilled about this opportunity,” said Terry Edson, President of Centralia, Illinois-based Country Bob’s regarding the partnership with the St. Louis Cardinals. “Our company bleeds Cardinal Red through and through. It’s just so excit-ing to think that millions of people will be able to try our products on their favorite stadium foods while rooting for their favorite baseball team.”
While they’ve been a staple for many grocers for nearly 40 years, the locally-made sauces will now be featured through-out Busch Stadium at 40 con-diment stands, Broadway BBQ and e Carvery concession stands for a more flavorful home eld advantage. Even more, Cardinals fans will be able to nd commemorative bottles pairing the Birds on the Bat with Country Bob’s at a growing number of grocery stores as a result of the part-nership.
“Our partnership with Country Bob’s is something that we’re very excited about this season for several reasons,” said Thane van Breusegen, Vice President of Corporate Sales & Marketing. “Not only will fans get to see, taste and hear about Country Bob’s in and around the ballpark but we are excited and proud to partner with a local company
based right in the heart of Cardinals Nation.”
Changing Upthe Flavor Lineup
Every manager needs a utility player. Someone who can play multiple positions or move around the line-up. Someone who can be counted on, regardless of the situation. Edson likens Country Bob’s Sauces to those much needed utility guys.
“ at’s what we really hope people take away a er they try us,” said Edson. “Our sauces pair well with everything you’d expect to nd at a ballgame: burgers, bratwurst, chicken, fries. Even more extravagant foods like prime rib or let mignon. But it goes especially well with Cardinals Baseball.”
With its tantalizing mixture of sweet and tangy, Country Bob’s will become yet another winning tradition at Busch Stadium and backyards this baseball season. For more in-formation, visit www.country-bobs.com

Hair Wreath
Q: I have a hair wreath in an elaborate frame. It is a family heirloom from the Civil War-era. I am curious about it. — Hope, Canton, Ohio
A: Human hair was used during the Victorian-era to make jewelry such as rings, lockets and bracelets. Hair also was used in wreaths, usually as mementos of a deceased family member. The wreaths often were cased in deep satin-lined frames and displayed in the family parlor. e practice was abandoned a er about 1910.
I occasionally have seen hair jewelry and wreaths in shops, and prices vary. A framed wreath is often o ered in the $250-$500 range, depending on condi-tion and workmanship.
***Q: My granddad contrib-
uted to several WPA guides that were published during the 1930s and '40s. He would like to nd the one
issued about Texas but has been unable to nd a copy. Can you help us? — Sarah, Jasper, Texas
A: e WPA Guide to Texas was rst published in 1940 by Hastings House. An original edition is fairly di cult to nd. I did locate a reprint from 1986 at abe.com for $50. If you're un-familiar with abe.com, it is a wonderful Internet source for book searches.
***Q: I have managed to
collect about 250 match-books. Can you recommend a reference so I can establish values for some of the rarer ones in my collection? — Charlie, Davenport, Iowa
A: Bill Reskin is the author of three books about matchbooks, and he is the driving force behind the American Matchcover Col-lecting Club, P.O. Box 18481, Asheville, NC 28814. You can contact Bill directly at [email protected]. One of his better references, "Matchcover Collector's Price Guide" is
available at Krause Books.***
Q: I have a 1958 Ballyhoo pinup calendar and have been o ered $50 for it. It is in mint condition. James, Portsmouth, Virginia
A: According to Collect-ibles Price Guide by Judith Miller, your calendar is worth in the $150-$200 range. Keep in mind, however, that this price range is only an opinion based on Miller's take on the marketplace. e actual value of an item — any item — is what someone is willing to plunk down for it in cold cash.

New Dog May Have to Wait
D E A R P A W ’ S CORNER: I’d like to get a dog, but my younger brother is very afraid of dogs because he was once bitten by one. How can I tell him not to be afraid, so I can have a dog? — Christine in Mesa, Arizona
DEAR CHRISTINE: You might not be able to get a dog right now, un-fortunately. If your parents don’t think that it’s a good idea because your younger brother is still very fearful of them, then that may be that.
However, there are some other things you
may be able to do, even if you can’t have your own dog. You could spend time with a friend or a neighbor’s dog. at’s a good way to learn how to walk, feed and even train a dog. I myself grew up around many dog owners, and by spending time with them, paying atten-tion to how they gave their dog commands and the different training methods they used, I got a wider perspective and better education on train-ing dogs than a book might have provided.
You could volunteer at a local shelter. While kids under 18 may be restrict-ed from working directly with the pets residing there, many shelters have programs designed espe-cially for school-age kids so they can contribute to shelter pets’ care, and learn about caring for these animals.
Consider getting a dif-
ferent pet to care for, as well. Learning to care for animals is a really impor-tant skill. Plus, your brother can and should
have a say in what kind of pet to get — and he’ll share the responsibility for caring for it.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It isn’t always easy for the ram-bunctious Aries to give a second thought to their o en spur-of-the-moment choices. But aspects favor rechecking a decision before declaring it nal.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Information emerges for the business-driven Bovine who feels ready to restart a stalled project. Be prepared to make adjustments as needed at any time during the process.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Part of you wants to complete plans for an upcoming event, while your other self wants to see how things develop rst. • You might be sur-prised to learn that Harriet Tubman — famous for her work as a conductor on the Underground Railroad — also served as a Union spy during the Civil War, providing key intelli-gence that aided in the capture of Jacksonville, Florida. She also was the
