    NEWScommunitySince 1916, Girl Scouts

have been making mean-ingful, sustainable change in their communities and around the world through their Girl Scout Gold Award projects. e Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind each recipi-ents dedication to not only empowering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. As the Girl Scout Gold Award celebrates 100 years of girls changing the world, Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) will highlight some of their shining stars who exemplify the greatness of this award.

A simple newspaper article on a beginners class in cemetery cleaning in-spired Cheyenne Chalkus of Salem, IL to pursue her Girl Scout Gold Award. Cheyenne knew she wanted to do something unique for her Gold Award project, and this was just the ticket. She cleared overgrowth and restored vandalized head-stones at Dickens Cemetery, a historic burial site owned by the City of Salem. A er obtaining the proper permits to start her project, Cheyenne went to work xing damaged memorials, clearing brush and remov-ing poison ivy from the site. To ensure the cemetery would stay maintained, she held a public presentation and distributed pamphlets about volunteer upkeep of historic cemeteries. To emphasize the importance of treating aging burial grounds with respect, Cheyenne included geneal-ogy of those who were buried at the cemetery during her presentation.

Not long a er earning her Girl Scout Gold Award,

Cheyenne earned another prestigious Girl Scout award the Girl Scout Medal of Honor. The Medal of Honor is a lifesav-ing award given by Girl Scouts of the USA to girls who have saved or attempt-ed to save a human life under circumstances that indicate heroism. This award is reserved for those Girl Scouts who have per-formed heroic acts beyond the degree of maturity and training to be expected at their age. At the age of 18, Cheyenne saved the life of her 22 month old nephew when he ended up face down and unconscious in a hot tub. anks to her CPR training, Cheyenne was able to revive her nephew by the time para-medics arrived.

Cheyenne will likely positively touch and save many more lives in the future. She currently attends Kaskaskia College where she is enrolled in the schools nursing and band programs. Once she grad-uates from Kaskaskia, Cheyenne plans to further her education by pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Nursing.

The Girl Scout Gold Award recognizes a Girl Scout's commitment to excellence as she develops skills and values to meet present and future chal-lenges in her life. To earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, a Girl Scout Senior or Girl Scout Ambassador must design and carry out a project that ful lls a need within a girls community, creates change, and is sus-tainable. e project must be completed with a sug-gested minimum of 80 hours of work. Only about 5 percent of eligible girls earn the prestigious Gold

Award. Its an accom-plished feeling to have completed Girl Scouts all the way, says Cheyenne of earning the Girl Scout Gold Award. If I could give any advice to future Girl Scouts it would be to nish Girl Scouts to the fullest (earn the Gold Award) because you will become a better person from the character-istics instilled throughout the program, Cheyenne added.

Today, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. is the largest volun-tary organization for girls in the world. Its sole focus is to meet the needs of all girls (ages 5-17) from diverse racial, ethnic and socioeconomic back-grounds. Todays Girl Scouts not only enjoy camping and crafts, but they also explore math and science and learn about diversity, good citizenship, leadership and teamwork. Girl Scouting is the place where girls experience the fun, friendship and power of girls together.

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois is a not-for-pro t organization supported by various United Ways throughout the region. Girl Scouts is a Proud Partner of United Way. For more information, please call Tricia Higgins at 618-242-5079.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Direc tor Wayne A. Rosenthal announced re-cently that an agreement has been reached to reopen the Illinois State Museum to the public. IDNR has worked closely with Governor Bruce Rauners office to develop a new, more sustainable model for operating the museum that will save about $1 million per year by closing two museum branches, con-solidating human resourc-es and accounting func-tions within IDNR, and by development of a new management and organi-zational structure. The museum will also seek to improve revenue by charg-ing an admission fee, and increase fundraising e orts through an improved part-nership with the Illinois State Museum Society.

e timeframe for re-opening will depend upon the Il l inois General Assembly taking up the amendatory veto (AV) of SB 317 and implementing the suggested changes. Governor Bruce Rauners AV asks that the authority to charge an admission fee be placed in statute so it can be implemented im-

mediately upon the accep-tance of the amendatory veto.

If t he G enera l Assembly acts quickly on the Governors amenda-tory veto, we believe we could reopen the museum in a matter of weeks, said IDNR Director Wayne Rosenthal. Without the G enera l Ass embly s support, it could take months to get the museum reopened.

Michael Wiant will become interim director of the Illinois State Museum immediately. Rosenthal will ask the Illinois State Museum Board to begin the search for a new direc-tor. Rosenthal also will ask the Museum and Society boards to call emergency meetings so work to reopen the museum can begin immediately.

With challenge comes great opportunity, and the museum sta is grateful for this tremendous opportu-nity to continue to share the art, history and culture of Illinois with its citizens, said Dr. Michael Wiant, Interim Director of the Illinois State Museum.

    I a p p l a u d t h e Governor's action as it creates a realistic path

forward to reopening the Illinois State Museum, said State Rep. Tim Butler ( R - S p r i n g f i e l d ) . Reopening the museum is vital to our community and the plan announced today will provide for the long-term viability and growth of the museum system. I look forward to working with the commu-nity, legislators, and the Governor as we again open the doors on a wonderful asset of our State.

I am encouraged that the Governor took careful steps in adjusting thisleg-islationwhile maintaining the ultimate goal of allow-ing our State Museum to resume its important work. We all want to see those doors open to the public once again, and this compromise could make that happen, said State Rep. Sara Wojcicki Jimenez (R-Spring eld).

The Illinois State Museum Society is looking forward to the challenge of becoming a stronger partner and playing a greater role in the success of the Il linois State Museum, said Karen Westbrook of the Illinois State Museum Society.

ILLINOIS STATE MUSEUM TO REOPEN TO THE PUBLIC

  • Wednesday, February 17, 2016 The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area 5

15th Congressional District Candidate and State Senator Kyle McCarter made the following state-ment on the Presidents speech at the Capitol and the issue of Gerrymandering or redistricting:

While the President and I dont see eye to eye on all issues, we do agree on the issue of Gerrymandering, a term given to an abused process of redrawing po-litical boundaries at the state and federal level.

At the Capitol today, President Obama said,We should change the way our districts are drawn. In America, politicians should not pick their voters, voters should pick their politi-cians.

We saw this abuse of the system the last time redis-tricting occurred in Illinois with the passage of Senate Bill 1178 in 2011. Added to the legislation, just prior to its approval, was a change that created a specially-drawn district for my op-p o n e n t i n t h e 15thCongressional District race. e immediate area around the current 20-year incumbents home was in-

cluded in the district. e purposeful way the district was drawn for him looks like a pigtail. e change benefiting my opponent added just a few suburban blocks of homes to the 15thCongressional District to include his own address.I agree with President Obama,Politicians should not pick their voters, voters should pick their politi-cians. e answer is an in-dependent commission not in uenced by politics and politicians looking out for themselves.

I l l i n o i s 1 5 t h Congressional District is comprised of all or parts of 33 count ies : B ond, Champaign, Clark, Clay, Clinton, Coles, Crawford, Cumberland, Douglas, Edgar, Edwards, E ngham, Fayette, Ford, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jasper, Johns on , L aw rence , Madison, Massac, Marion, Moultrie, Pope, Richland, Saline, Shelby, Vermillion, Wabash, Washington, Wayne and White.

    Finicky Cats Stage Hunger Strikes

DEAR PAWS CORNER: Im writing in regards to your recent column about the causes of nicky eating in pets. My two cats dont like liver or the smell of liver. However, most wet cat food contains chicken or beef byproducts, which usually means some amount of liver. If my cats smell liver in their food, they just wont eat it, and will go hungry and meow about it usually in the middle of the night.

By trial and error, I have found about ve or six dif-ferent cans they really like to eat. However, some days they gobble the food down and other days they go on a hunger strike, even with foods they liked the last time. When that happens, I pick up the bowl and smell it. Every single time it smells like liver, and I have to throw it out.

ey also like variety in their wet food, although I never have had to switch their dry food.

I wish cat food manufac-turers would not add any liver at all, but almost all cat food has byproducts in it. I hope my experience helps your other readers. Kathy in Sacramento

DEAR KATHY: Many thanks for sharing this! I too have dealt with this

issue. The struggle then becomes nding another avor or brand of food that the cat will tolerate.

O en that boils down to buying a much more ex-pensive brand that doesnt contain byproducts. But that can be difficult for many cat owners. Readers, what tips do you have for cat owners trying to deal with nicky eaters? Send your tips to [email protected].

    Tilt-Out TV

Q: My mom and dad were among the rst in Chicago to own a televi-sion set. It was an Emerson Model 608 console with pop-up screen. I have inherited it, and its unusual design must mean that it is worth more than just a few dollars. Carl, Na-perville, Illinois

A: Your television was introduced in 1949 and was, as you claim, quite unusual. I would, in fact, consider it a classic. It had a 16-inch tilt-out screen that could be hidden when not in use. I have checked with two serious collectors, and they seem to agree that your set is worth some-where in the $400 to $600 range depending, of course, on its condi-tion.

***Q: I have three issues of

"Marge's Little Lulu" comics, Nos. 39, 81 and 123. Are they worth keeping? Betty, Spring- eld, Ill.

A: According to most of the guides I consulted, t he y are wor t h a minimum of $100 each in good shape. As with most collectibles, condi-tion is paramount. e value of a comic boils down to several factors, including condition, scarcity and demand. A good place to monitor the value of comics is eBay.

Incidentally, your issue No. 39 also features another popular cartoon character, Witch Hazel.

***Q: I have an old paper

recording by Rudy Vallee with his picture on the blank side. Is it worth much? Donna, Wiers Beach, N.H.

A: Your record was issued by Hit of the Week and was sold at news stands beside the latest copies of Liberty, Satur-day Evening Post and Punch. e recordings, which featured such popular entertainers as Eddie Cantor and Duke Ellington, sold for about 10 cents, making them

extremely a ordable.Your Rudy Vallee re-

cording is worth about $5 in good playable con-dition. Incidentally, the main drawback of these products is that they had a tendency to curl.

    ***Q: I have a political

poster of Richard Nixon that was used in 1948 to promote his congressional campaign in California. It is in fairly good condi-tion, and I have been o ered $200 for it. Keep or sell is my question. Carol, Orange County, California

A: Take the money and run. Your poster gener-ally sells in the $50 range.

If the New Hampshire primary doesn't tell you where the country is, nothing will. A self proclaimed socialist and a real estate tycoon who hasn't voted in a primary since the 80s came out ahead. e clear winners: Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump. Americans are fed up with the traditional politicians and the end result of New Hampshire says it all.

    Enough is enough!

In the past, New Hampshire has been good to the Clintons probably too good but instead of heart this time, the voters of New Hampshire used their heads.

What's Hillary Clinton missing? A message. She has the 15 second elevator pitch, but playing the word associa-tion game, the same word pops up with the majority: Liar! at tells the whole story.

ere were 23 Republican delegates at risk in New Hampshire and 32 Democratic delegates.

So does the size of the victory in New Hampshire matter? In my opinion, the answer is yes. The young people were brought into it. at's a separate story to be told. And Bernie held the young, and will hold strong with them in the long run. However, keep in mind it's one state at a time.

At 7:00 p.m. last Tuesday evening, as 23 polls were closing, the turnout was in-credible. Many at that point were not just coming in to vote but registering, and at 7:00 anyone in line was counted. At 7:01 it was too late! Many were first time voters.

e Secretary of State of New Hampshire made the call at that point. Wow! What I found fascinating is anyone in a tra c line was deemed in line to be able to register or vote, and if the State Police of New Hampshire said they looked like they were in line to register or vote, they could.

Is this a rst, or what?In the end, on the

Democratic side, in order of importance was:

    33% voted on Equality Issues;

    25% Healthcare;8% Terrorist Activities.

    e GOP:30% Economic Issues;25% Terrorist Activities;2 7 % G o v e r n m e n t

    Spending;15% Immigration.

At 7:45 p.m it was an-nounced a winner might be declared and at 8:00 p.m. MSNBC declared the pro-jected winners: Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.

What this says loud and clear is many Americans don't see America as great any more and feel that Barack Obama has transformed our country against the people's will with everything from racial divide to class warfare.

At the end of the evening Rachel Maddox said Sanders and Clinton split the rst two states. Sorry, Rachel. Clinton stole Iowa by the ip of a coin, but in typical Maddox antics and wishful thinking, no such luck, sweetheart. Let's see her defend Bill for saying, "It wasn't Hillary's job to oversee security in Benghazi."

ese two people couldn't be any worse, and you don't need a magnifying glass to see it. Bill, whose job was it?

Oh well, in the end, at 8:00 p.m. the message from new Hampshire was loud and clear. Hillary was at 38% and Sanders was over 60%.

Hillary conceded in typical Clinton gutless wonder fashion! But I would point out as well I lost all respect for former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright last week when she said, "There is a place in hell for women who don't support other women." I have a lot to say to Ms. Albright, but it's not printable.

In 24 hours a er the New Hampshire primary Bernie

raised $6 million, with the average being $34 per contri-bution.

On to the last GOP debate, just days before the Nevada Caucuses. In 2016 the Democrats will hold their caucuses on Feb. 20 and the GOP will be on Feb. 23 (sep-arate caucuses).

During the GOP debate, the gloves came off and it quickly became a verbal slug-fest. It was all out war, espe-cially between Jeb and Donald Trump. In my opinion, there was no clear winner.

e weekend ended in the sad news that the longest serving Supreme Court Justice died. Justice Antonin Scalia (1936 2016) died at age 79, the father of 9 and grandfather of 35. He was a man that deeply believed in the U.S. Constitution, and was a great defender of the Constitution, unlike Obama who violates it at every opportunity.

So what's next? Mitch McConnell has already de-clared the line is drawn and Barack Obama won't name the next justice, so there's no point in him trying! And I absolutely agree with this. Obama should not name the replacement for Scalia. at should be up to the next President Republican or Democrat. A lame duck POTUS should not be allowed to tip the balance of the Supreme Court for years to come. But leave it to Obama to try.

In closing, I didn't always agree with Justice Scalia, but I always respected him!

    Until next week.

Southern Carbohydrate CookingRecently a friend of mind (knowing my deep love of southern cooking) lent me a

cookbook to thumb through called Paula Deen's Southern Cookbook Bible, a classic guide to delicious dishes with more than 300 recipes.

Just know I'm gonna love anything that starts out by saying, "Y'all, I love my carbs." But the fact is, no southern table is complete without a bowl of carbohydrate goodness. I don't care where you are in the south, you'll always nd pasta, noodles or rice on the table, and today it's not much di erent. So, speaking of carbohydrates, in famous Paula Deen fashion I'll say, "Hope y'all enjoy the dishes below."

e Lady's Cheesy Mac2 cups (8 oz.) elbow macaroni 3 large eggs, lightly beaten2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, 1 cup whole milk or evaporated milk plus extra for topping 1/2 cup sour cream4 T. (1/2 stick) butter, cut into pieces 1/2 tsp. salt

Preheat the oven to 350F. Lightly grease a 13 by 9-inch baking dish with butter, oil, or cooking spray. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the macaroni accord-ing to the package directions. Drain well and transfer to a large bowl. Add the 2 cups cheddar and the butter, stirring until the pasta is coated. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sour cream, and salt. Add the egg mixture to the pasta and stir well to combine. Scrape the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Bake until golden, 35 to 40 minutes. Take the dish out of the oven and top with extra cheese, then return it to the oven until the cheese is melted and beginning to brown, about 5 minutes. Serve hot. Serves 4 to 6.

Savannah Red Rice3 T. butter 1 (15 oz.) can crushed tomatoes1 cup chopped yellow onion 1 cup chicken broth1 cup chopped green bell pepper 1 tsp. hot sauce1 cup chopped andouille Pinch of salt or other smoked sausage Pinch of black pepper1 cup long-grain white rice

Preheat the oven to 350F. Lightly grease a 13 by 9-inch baking dish with butter, oil, or cooking spray. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion, bell pepper, and sausage and cook until the vegetables so en, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in the remaining ingredients and bring to a simmer. Cook until the sauce begins to thicken, about 10 minutes. Scrape the mixture into the prepared baking dish and cover with foil. Bake until the rice is tender and the sauce is bubbling, 40 to 45 minutes. Serve hot. Serves 4 to 6.

Southern Brown Rice With Mushrooms3 T. butter 1 cups beef broth3/4 cup chopped yellow onion 1/4 tsp. salt1 cup long-grain white rice Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish1 (4 oz.) can sliced mushrooms, drained

In a medium saucepan, heat the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until so and golden, 10 to 12 minutes. Add the rice and mushrooms and cook, stir-ring to coat with the butter, for about 2 minutes. Pour in the broth and add the salt. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce to a simmer, cover, and cook until most of the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is tender, 17 to 20 minutes. Remove from the heat and let stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Flu with a fork. Serve garnished with parsley. Serves 4.

    A Marriage Made in Heaven

A young bride de-scribed her marriage as a marriage made in heaven. Is there such a thing as a marriage made in heaven? What would a marriage made in heaven look like? If you think a marriage made in heaven is a perfect marriage, then you would be greatly d i s app oi nte d . No husband or wife is perfect, for we are all human and carry our own frailties and foibles. On the website davewil-lis.org this sage observa-tion is found, Great marriages dont happen by luck or by accident. ey are the result of a consistent investment of time, thoughtfulness, forgiveness, a ection, prayer, mutual respect, and rock-solid commit-ment between a husband and wife.

In Ephesians 5, Gods Word describes how to have a marriage made in heaven. Read and practice these ve areas: 1) Walk in love (Ephe-sians 5:1-7); 2) Walk in light (Ephesians 5:8-14); 3) Walk in wisdom (Ephesians 5:15-17); 4) Walk in the Spirit (Ephe-sians 5:18-20); 5) Walk

    in Christ (Ephesians 5:21-33).

Put into practice the following building blocks for a marriage made in heaven by fol-lowing the example of Christ, the heavenly bridegroom, and His love for the church, the bride of Christ. (Ephe-sians 5:22-33)

SERVANT LEADER-SHIP. A marriage made in heaven acknowledges Christ as head of the church. Paul cal ls Christs love for the church a great mystery. (Ephesians 5:32) Jesus modeled servant leader-ship as He gave His life as a sacri ce. e scrip-tures admonish hus-bands to take the lead in marriage. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let wives be subject to their own husbands. (Ephe-sians 5:22-24) is does not make the wife a doormat, but a help-mate, a partner. Hus-bands lead as they follow Christs example.

SACRIFICIAL LOVE. Husbands, love your wives as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for her. (Ephesians 5:25-29) Husbands are admon-ished to nourish and cherish their wife as they would their own body. We do this by words and actions. e scriptures remind us that husbands and wives become one esh and walk in the intimacy and oneness that Christ modeled for the church. (Ephesians 5:30-32) Re-cently, I came across this powerful Facebook post, In the blink of an eye, everything can change. So forgive o en and love with all your heart. You may never know when you may not have that chance again. A great philosophy for a good marriage is, Always building up, never tearing down.

STRONG COMMIT-MENT. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one esh. (Ephesians 5:30-32) God takes the marriage vows very seri-ously. A marriage made in heaven has a strong and solid commitment for life. (Ephesians 5:1-7) Traditional mar-

riage vows have includ-ed this statement for a reason, Whom, there-fore, God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

SINCERE RESPECT. Interestingly, husbands are commanded to love their wives as Christ loves the church and wives are commanded to respect their hus-bands. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself and the wife must resp ec t her husband. (Ephesians 5:33) A wife needs to know she is loved and a husband needs to know that he is respected.

A marriage made in heaven is built upon making Christ Lord and making a consistent in-vestment of t ime, thoughtfulness, forgive-ness, a ection, prayer, mutual respect, and a rock-solid commitment. All Christians need to spend time daily letting the Word of Christ dwell in them richly, for then the Spirit of God can work in our lives to make us joyful, thank-ful, and submissive. (Colossians 3:16-4:1)

    2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

It was American jour-nalist and poet Max Eastman who made the following sage observa-tion: "People who demand neutrality in any situation are usually not neutral but in favor of the status quo."

When you were in school, you may have had to memorize the names of all 50 states. You probably weren't taught, though, that fully half of those names are derived from the languages of the con-

tinent's native peoples. Th e declarations that

the physical book is dead have been overstated (as I've always maintained). In a recent survey of college students, 72 percent of respondents made known their prefer-ence for print textbooks over ebooks; only 27 percent of this youthful, tech-savvy demographic said they preferred the electronic version.

    Th ose who study such

things report that beloved British author Charles Dickens was adamant that he always sleep with his head pointing north. He even carried a compass with him everywhere to ensure proper position-ing.

If you're a fan of James Bond, you may be sur-prised to learn that Ian Fleming, the creator of that notorious character, also wrote the beloved children's book "Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang," based on bedtime stories the author made up for his young son.

If you're traveling in China and propose a toast in someone's honor, be sure you're holding the

glass with both hands; only rude people and unenlightened foreigners use just one hand.

Clyde Barrow was already a notorious crim-inal when he wrote a letter to Henry Ford in 1934 complimenting him on the "dandy" automobile he'd made. e Ford V-8 was Barrow's preferred getaway car. Just a month later, Bonnie and Clyde were killed in a stolen Ford Deluxe V-8 in a shootout with police.
