 e King of Cleveland
You don't get the op-portunity very often, witnessing pure unadul-terated excellence, so when the moment comes you don't ever forget what took place. For LeBron James, that moment was Game Seven of the NBA Finals, and the place was Oakland.
The business world likes to use sports analo-gies. Easy deals are re-ferred to as "slam dunks," ambitiousness is mea-sured by "goals," wins are "home runs" and losses are "knockouts." Rare are the times that sports teams use business anal-ogies. Nobody calls a player a "pencil pusher" or a "bean counter," there are no "working sti s" or "executive vice presi-dents." In basketball, you are assigned nicknames like "Air," "Magic" and "King." They're in the business of delivering championships.
As far as business deci-sions go, LeBron's deci-sion to skip college paid
o . His decision to leave Cleveland for Miami paid o in the form of dual championships. e decision to broadcast his decision live on ESPN, a narcissistic misstep that humiliated his home-town, severely damaged his "brand." I wouldn't say I was a hater, but " e Decision" tipped the scale for me ... LeBron was a bad guy in terms of the storyline.
No more. A er almost singlehandedly beating the Warriors in one of the greatest f inals through sheer force of will, he is the hero at the end of the book.
James' performance, particularly in Game Seven, where he totally took control of the nal minutes of play, was as-tounding. Numbers don't tell the whole story, can't tell the whole story. What reads on the stat sheet as a block was actually a story about a guy who kept on running back, catching up in time to take to the air and smash a sure bucket into the backboard to preserve
the tie. What the stat sheet lists as one free throw was actually the story of a giant of a man, rolling in utter pain on the hardwood for several minutes before rising for the last minute of the game.
ere are some great postscripts, too. Rihanna trolling Stephen Curry on Twitter was an inter-esting novelty. e series also gave us a few stun-ning renditions of " e Star-Spangled Banner," most notably Carlos Santana's version and the Cleveland sing-a-long. It also showcased Oakland in a very favorable light, something that has been way overdue. Oakland and Berkeley are two overlooked cities, strug-gling from broad gener-alizations for genera-tions.
For Cleveland, which su ered through a bunch of "The" moments — " e Drive," " e Shot," " e Fumble" and " e Dennis Kucinich" — LeBron James has given the city a few other moments to remember, namely " e Comeback" and " e Block." Most importantly, he gave Cleveland the champion-ship, and that's your fairy-tale ending.

The Il linois State D e n t a l S o c i e t y Foundation will host the Mission of Mercy, or “MOM,” at the Gateway Center in Collinsville on July 15-16, 2016. More than 1,000 volunteer den-tists, hygienists, dental assistants, dental students and others from through-out Illinois will provide an estimated $1 million in free dental care to pa-tients who would not otherwise have access to necessary treatment.
“We are prepared to see 1,000 patients per day, and hope to accommo-date more if we can,” said Dr. Randall Markarian, a Swansea orthodontist who serves as MOM Co-Chair. “In order to treat as many patients in the best way possible, the patient’s priority condi-tion will be served rst.”
Here are some impor-tant things that prospec-tive patients should know:
• Not all dental ser-vices will be available. Emphasis will be on basic dental care — fillings, extractions and cleanings.
• No appointments will be taken.
• No pre-registration is available.
• Care is provided on a rst-come, rst-served basis.
• Doors will open at 6:00 a.m.
• Th ere are no income eligibility requirements; anyone can receive treat-ment.
• No false teeth (den-tures) will be made.
• Patients with serious health problems may not be able to receive dental treatment (for example, extremely high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, and severe disabilities).
• Patients will not receive all the dental work that is needed; the most critical dental prob-lems will receive priority treatment.
• Recommended items for patients to bring to MOM:
* List of current med-ications and a one day supply.
* Baby supplies for a full day — diapers, formula, etc.
* Reading glasses (for help in completing paper-work).
* Something to help you pass the time such as reading material, knit-ting, crossword puzzles, etc.
* Water and snacks.* Sun protection (sun-
screen, sunglasses, um-brella).
If a patient is in severe pain NOW, don’t wait until the Mission of Mercy. Seek treatment immediately!
e Mission of Mercy will serve to highlight the serious problem that many Illinois citizens have in accessing dental care. The event will relieve some suffering, but it won’t solve the problem. Only the Illinois legislature can provide the solution through ad-equately funding the Medicaid program in Illinois.
“Prevention remains the best plan of action,” adds MOM co-chair Dr. Darryll Beard, a general dentist in Waterloo. “If patients maintain good oral health habits at home, and receive basic dental services and re-storative services by a
dentist, it drastically reduces the need for ex-pensive emergency room visits and extensive treat-ment, which typically cost ten times more than
if the patient had origi-nally been treated by a dentist.”
More information on the Mission of Mercy event is available at the
Illinois State Dental Society Foundation’s w e b s i t e a t w w w.ISDSFoundation.org.

Home Alone
D E A R P AW ’ S CORNER: My 1-year-old dog, “Clemente,” gets extremely anxious when-ever I leave home. He barks nonstop, as my neighbor has mentioned repeatedly. I put him in his crate whenever I leave, but it doesn’t matter if I’m gone for 20 minutes or all day — he will not stop barking until I get home.
I tried leaving him out of the crate when I go out for short periods, but then he just barks, claws at the door and scatters my shoes everywhere. What else can I do? — Beth N., Brooklyn, New York
D E A R B E T H : Reducing your pet’s anxiety when you leave home can be really tough. Regardless of his history — whether he was a shelter adoption or brought home from a litter — Clemente’s per-ception is that you are leaving, and he doesn’t know why or for how long. How will he eat if you’re gone for days? Why won’t you take him with you? A lot of things are running through his mind.
Even if you just go out of sight for a few minutes, some pets get really worried. I’ve come out of the bathroom to find my dog and cats clustered together, staring up at me mutely with eyes that seem to say, “Where did you GO?”
ere are many things to try, all of which involve reassuring Clemente that you will come home. Contact a
trainer who specializes in eas ing anxiety (Clemente’s vet may have some good recom-mendations). Most im-portantly, do it soon. Right now he’s got some anxiety, but that could develop into more de-
structive behaviors. Now is the time to really build that relationship with your dog and help him feel more con dent that you are always there for him.

As I walked into church Sunday morning I ran into an old friend whom I'm always glad to see. e rst thing he said a er our usual greeting hug, with great concern in his eyes, was, "Cathy, this country is a mess." I could only agree with him. Then the service started with a prayer for our neighbors, friends, families and country.
en it hit me, the answer to all things is in Christ. is country needs to turn the clock back in time to when we as children were taught to love one another, to respect others, to care for one another, and to respect authority, back to a time when mothers and father faced the full responsibility of teach-ing their children right from wrong. I realize there are parents and grandparents still teaching their children and grandchildren right from wrong, but the reality is there are not as many today as yes-terday. God bless those that are, because that's our only hope; the children are the future.
In my opinion, last week was a heartbreaking week for America, for all of us, starting with the lives lost in Louisiana and Minnesota. In Dallas, Texas, ve police o cers were killed and nine individuals were wounded (seven o cers of the law and two civilians), becoming casualties of a lone deranged gunman in an ambush style attack in down-town Dallas, Texas. e only motivation that anyone could come up with was that the sniper was protesting the o cer shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota.
is shooter was taken out by a robotic bomb a er a stand-o with police. at was the deadliest event for U.S. police o cers since September 11, 2001. And in this tragedy the same strategy was in play as on September 11, 2001 when the men and women in blue ran toward the twin towers to protect and save as many lives as they could, costing many of
them their own lives. e same held true last week
in Dallas, Texas during a peace-ful "Black Lives Matter" move-ment protest. As the shots rang out, those brave o cers ran toward the gun re to protect and save as many as they could, costing ve brave men in blue their very lives and leaving seven wounded.
The suspect's motivation was revealed in negotiations when he said he was upset about recent police shootings so he wanted to kill as many white people, especially white o cers, as he could and he said that he acted alone.
I personally can't imagine the complete fear that had to grip all involved in this tragic event as the hundreds protest-ing ran in every direction and the police charged forward!
I've heard some compare today to the late 1960s. I lived through those days. They weren't great days, but if this great divide doesn't stop soon, our children and grandchildren will see the same thing. at's certainly not something most of us want.
Last Friday Barack Obama ordered ags to be own at half sta in honor of those that lost their lives and those that were wounded in Dallas, Texas. at's the 67th time he's done this since becoming President, more than any other president, according to USA Today. In my mind that says it all.
So in the end, what's the answer to the racial divide? In my mind, I answered that ques-tion in the second paragraph.
e other issue that I found heartbreaking last week was the corruption of the current U.S. government administration, which I have absolutely no respect for, and I have even less respect for Hillary Clinton. FBI Director James Comey was, in my opinion, nothing but a sac-ri cial lamb for Hillary Clin-ton's corruption, and he took the fall for U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch's un-ethical meeting with Billy
Clinton, as reported in the New York Times.
Mr. Comey said that Mrs. Clinton had failed to return "thousands" of work related emails to the State Department, despite her public insistence to the contrary, and that her lawyers may have destroyed classi ed material that the FBI was unable to recover. He also described her handling of clas-si ed material as Secretary of State as "negligent," a legal term he avoided using last Tuesday. But the biggest problem — and I have many issues with both Clintons — was Comey said his team of investigators had not found clear evidence that Mrs. Clinton intended to break the law governing the use of classified materials and ex-plained that prosecutors have 'grave concerns" about using the lower legal standard of "gross negligence" in their han-dling and have applied it only once in the last century.
To make matters even worse — if they could be any worse — Republicans expressed par-ticular frustration with Comey when he said that the FBI did not examine Mrs. Clinton's statement to Congress about her email server to determine whether she had perjured herself. And this woman wants to be our next President. My God, people, wake up! The bottom line is, in my opinion, she is guilty as hell, and the FBI Director took the fall for Loretta Lynch. What a sad time for America!
Leaving you with a final thought, again, one that was shared in church last Sunday morning: e only way evil can triumph is if good men do nothing.
Until next week.To comment on this or any column

Salad DressingsHow many times have you heard, "Eat your greens"? My grandmother was famous
for this old saying, especially since, like most kids, I didn't like them. But as I got older, I learned to eat them because they were good for me. en I learned to eat them because I liked them.
But who eats greens without dressing? I found some old recipes for salad dressing that I wanted to share this week, so enjoy!
Celery Seed Dressing is savory-sweet dressing takes great on a mixture of bitter and tender greens.
1¼ cups white sugar 1 tsp. dry mustard2/3 cup cider vinegar 1½ tsp. black pepper, freshly ground2 cups vegetable oil 1½ tsp. celery seed1 small onion, grated 1 tsp. salt, optional
Mix sugar, 1/3 cup vinegar, oil, onion, mustard, pepper, celery seed, and salt; beat well with rotary beater or whisk. Add 1/3 cup more vinegar; beat again. Taste and correct seasonings; refrigerate up to 3 weeks. Shake well before serving. Makes ap-proximately 3 cups.
Creamy Salad Dressing is sweet and sour dressing goes well on so greens.
1/2 cup heavy cream 2 T. cider vinegar1/3 cup white sugar
Mix cream, sugar, and vinegar together until smooth. Refrigerate up to 2 weeks. Shake well before serving. Makes 2/3 cup.
French Dressing is spicy, sweet dressing complements country mixed green salads.
1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/2 tsp. paprika1/2 cup fresh lemon juice 1/4 tsp. dry mustard1 T. sugar 1 T. grated or nely chopped onion1/4 tsp. black pepper, freshly ground
Whisk or beat together all ingredients — oil, fresh lemon juice, sugar, pepper, paprika, mustard, and onion — until combined. Taste and correct seasonings. Refrigerate up to 2 weeks. Shake well before serving. Makes about 1 cup.
Shallot Dressing is versatile dressing can be used on vegetables, pasta salads, green salads, or as
a dipping sauce.
4 shallots, peeled 2 T. fresh parsley2/3 cup olive oil 1/2 tsp. coarse salt1/3 cup red wine vinegar 1/2 tsp. black pepper, freshly ground2 T. Dijon mustard 1/4 tsp. sugar
Place shallots in food processor and process 2 to 3 pulses. Add oil, vinegar, mustard, parsley, salt, pepper, and sugar. Process 6 . to 8 pulses or until shallots are chopped. Seal in glass jar. Refrigerate for 3 to 4 weeks. Shake well before using. Makes 1½ cups.

e Robert and Donita Morris home in Walnut Hill, Illinois will be the site for a Hummingbird Festival scheduled for Wednesday, July 20 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. In the last ve years over 500 hummingbirds have been banded at this site. Vernon Kleen, a licensed humming-bird bander from Spring eld and associated with the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders, will begin the festival at 8 a.m. with a short discussion about humming-birds and explain why they are banded. A er the discus-sion, hummingbirds will be captured and banded.
There is no admission charge for this family event and visitors may stay as long as they wish. Visitors may also "adopt" a bird by making a $5 donation to the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders. Donors will receive an attractive signed certi -cate, be given the privilege of releasing their adopted birds (if enough birds are captured), and will be noti- ed if their birds are ever recaptured.
If hummingbirds appeal to you, then plan on visiting the Walnut Hill, Illinois Hummingbird Festival. It should be a rewarding expe-
rience. e Robert Morris home is located at 229 Medlin Road, east of Walnut Hill and about 5 miles east of Centralia, south of Route 161 East.
The Lincoln L and Association of Bird Banders is a not-for-pro t organiza-tion to perform sound sci-enti c studies and educa-tional services to monitor, protect and enhance the populations of Illinois' native birds and their unique environments.
Donation of sugar is ap-preciated. Bring lawn chair, hat, camera and your own drinks.

Mt. Vernon Water System
Dear Editor,I was again at tonight's Mt.
Vernon City Council work-shop meeting June 30, 2016, where the city o cials looked over plans to deal with our water main problems. What I again didn’t hear at this special city council meeting — the third, I believe, being held to talk over problems with both our sewer and water infra-structures — is someone, anyone on our council willing to put forth what I see as our only true solution.
I give them kudos for holding these kind of meet-ings, but in my opinion, the only real solution is not raising our bills to numbers intolerable to a lot of our citizens, as they talked about large fees and rate increases tonight. No, the real solution is to stop all nonessential spending, and really get
serious about xing the water main problems without selling our water systems to a for-pro t, private company, that once sold to them can do as they want, and not keep any promises made once our water system is theirs.
Here is my plea to our city o cials, and I hope it is your plea as well: “City” get serious, and stop spending millions on widening roads, bike trails, new industrial parks, and putting in sidewalks that few of us will ever use. Take those home-rules taxes this city is collecting, yes those taxes that were originally started for our sewer systems but have been siphoned o for God knows what over the years! Put that money back to work xing our water infrastructure, and out of promoting this town. But if you must, and if you are going to keep promoting our town, then tell the truth to those that are looking at our
little country city; tell them to come to our city so they can watch our water systems fall apart.
Steven B. Casper, Sr.Mt. Vernon, IL

State Representative John Cavaletto (R-Salem), an-nounced recently that he will be returning back to the state another $14,000 in his state o ce allotment. Cavaletto has returned money back every year he has been in the I l l i n o i s H o u s e o f Representatives, and with this year’s amount the total is estimated at $129,253.50. at is an average of $16,000 a year savings for the taxpay-ers of Illinois.
“Some people may say that’s not much considering the state owes $7.5 billion in back bills, but if all 177 leg-islators in the General Assembly were able to return the same amount of $16,000 each year, then over $2.8 million could be saved every year,” commented Rep. Cavaletto. “My district sta and I have been able to run our o ce and programs ef-ficiently with the use of technology to save on
postage and by utilizing ‘traveling office hours’ around the district to save money,” Cavaletto added.
Residents are able to stay connected to legislative ac-tivities at www.ilga.gov, at Rep. Cavaletto’s web site (www.johncavaletto.org), and on Facebook. For more information, contact Rep. Cavaletto at 618-548-9080 or at his on-line office at [email protected].

How to Pray with Power
Mankind is im-pressed and obsessed with power. Americans have power walks, power drinks, power neckties, powerful ma-chines, and seek more powerful computers. But the most underes-timated and underused power on earth is prayer. Even medical science has substanti-ated the benefits of prayer. Prayer moves the hand of God. Develop these keys to prayer that will enable you to pray with power and change your life.
P O V E R T Y O F SPIRIT is the basic re-quirement of prayer. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus revealed a paradigm shi from the way most people think and act. “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” (Matthew 5:3) This means to recognize our need for God. Until you recognize your need for God and His help you will never pray with power. God gives grace to the humble. (I Peter 5:5-6)
PRAISING GOD brings you into the presence of God. Jesus
taught in the Lord’s Prayer to begin prayer by “hallowing” the Fa-ther’s name. (Matthew 6:9) In the passage of the triumphant entry Jesus sent his disciples to get a donkey for him to ride into Jerusalem. He told them to tell the owner of the donkey, “ e Lord has need of it.” (Mark 11:4) As he rode into Jerusalem the multitudes gave him praise. (Matthew 21:16) God doesn’t need our gold, silver, or sacri- ces, but he does desire our praise and worship. (John 4:23-24) Praise brings God’s presence, power, and a delight to prayer.
PURITY OF HEART brings power in prayer. Jesus rst cleansed the temple and then decreed, “My house will be called a house of prayer.” (Matthew 2 1 : 1 2 - 1 3 ) J e s u s promised, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8) A friend
posted this truth on Facebook, “You cannot pray for an A on a test and study for a B. You cannot pray for a faithful relationship and st i l l l ive an unfaithful life. Moral of the story is you cannot pray for something and act less. Don’t question my God and His abilities when your actions don’t match your prayers.” (@SpiritualWord) David prayed, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit with-in me.” (Psalms 51:10) Only the blood of Jesus can cleanse your heart from sin. (Psalms 51:6-7)
P E R S U A S I V E PRAYER is the prayer of faith. e disciples were amazed when Jesus cursed a barren g tree and it withered from the roots up. Jesus told them, “Have faith in God . . . whoever says to this mountain, be taken up and cast into the sea, and does not doubt . . . but be-lieves . . . it shall be granted him.” (Mark 11:22-24) Believe Jesus’ promises. (John 14:12-14) A great man of p r a y e r, Tu e s d a y omas Watson, said, “Prayer is the key, and
faith is the hand that turns it, and claims the blessing.”
P A R D O N THROUGH PRAYER keeps the channels of prayer power open. In the Lord’s Prayer Jesus taught us to pray, “And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.” (Matthew 6:12) David said, “If I regard iniq-uity in my heart, the Lord will not hear.” (Psalms 66:16-17) e most powerful prayer is the humble cry to God for forgiveness. (I John 1:9) Forgiving those who have hurt you is a necessary key for freedom and power in prayer. (Matthew 6:14)
Do you want power for living and power in prayer? Develop and use these keys in prayer and your life will be radically changed. And prayer will be a delight!
“Now may the God of peace Himself sanc-tify you completely and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be pre-served blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Chr is t .” ( I essalonians 5:23)Shalom,Cli SandersEagle Life [email protected]
