From the PastorPam and I returned from Sabbatical the first week of August after over a

month away. Thank you so much for your generosity in allowing us this timeaway. It’s awkward for any congregation to have their pastor out of the pulpitfor several weeks in a row, but I know you were well cared for by our staff andguest preachers during my absence.

What did I do during these weeks? First, I worshipped in a variety ofchurches in South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia, some withdifferent backgrounds and traditions from ours. One Sunday, I attended aPresbyterian church; another, an Independent Anglican Church; another, a largeChurch of God; then, on several other occasions, Baptist churches similar toours. It was so refreshing to see so many great churches, experience such greatworship and hear such great preaching. I was inspired by it all.

Second, I was able to spend a considerable amount of time in personalBible study and prayer. I can’t tell you what a gift it is to be relieved of all theduties of pastoring (even though I love what I do!) so that I could simply bestill before the Lord for an extended period of time. And, as I shared withyou through the Sundays of August, I felt that the Lord gave me newrevelation through this time about our church’s direction. I feel refreshed andre-invigorated in mind, body and spirit and eagerly await the next season ofministry the Lord has for us here at LBC.

September begins with one of the great events our church familyenjoys each year: Tailgate Sunday. On September 1, we’ll meet in only oneworship service at 10:15 am in the Worship Center for a special experience ofworship that brings together all four of our regular worship services. Followingthe service, we will serve barbecue for the whole church family. Our SundaySchool classes will eat together, a great opportunity to get to know one anotherbetter. But if you’re not in a Sunday School class, don’t worry! You’ll have aspecial place to enjoy your meal, too. I hope you’ll make plans to join us.

Also in September, on Wednesday, September 4, we’ll begin ourregular fall schedule. This year we’re adding something new anddifferent. In addition to all of our regular, exciting events and activities, we’readding a second hour for my midweek Bible study. It will work like this: the firstsession of the Pastor’s Bible study will be at 4 pm in the chapel. Family nightsupper will follow from 4:45 to 6 pm. Then, at 6:15, I’ll teach the secondsession in the chapel. Both sessions will be exactly the same. For those of youwho prefer the earlier hour, you can attend the midweek service at 4, eatdinner and go home. The rest of you may eat dinner first, attend the 6:15 studyand return home at 7 pm. The reason we’re doing it this way is because theattendance through last Winter and Spring for the midweek service filled thechapel to capacity. This way, we can accommodate more people in the service.

Wednesday night church is an opportunity to expand our church’s ministryin some new and far-reaching ways, so I hope each of you will plan on beinghere. We also have classes and events for all ages. It would be great if you’dalso bring someone with you—I’ll be teaching on a variety of topics with specialapplication toward practical Christian living.

Finally, as we move into the fall months, let’s not forget thepriority of giving. As we honor the Lord with our finances, He promises tobless us in more ways than we know. Our church ministries impact people inLexington and around the world because you continue to faithfully andgenerously give.

LBC Orchestra member David Croneand the donation by the orchestra ofthree violas and a cello to a ministryin Brazil! After that trip, two choirmembers, John O’Cain and BobGunter, went to Nicaragua in Julywith the team from LBC headed upby Chuck McCurry. This groupconducted Vacation Bible School anddid construction work with the H3CSchool (Helping Hands & Hearts forChrist) for the deaf and disabled on the island of Ometepe as well as the Lluviade Gracia (Rain of Grace) church. At the Lluvia de Gracia church, they donated anew Ibanez bass guitar to the church’s music ministry. This gift was madepossible in part by the LBC Choir and the Scott Fisher Orchestra Fund. What an incredible summer we just experienced. We witnessed studentscoming to the Lord for salvation and students committing to full-time missions.We saw God unify this ministry like never before. We are on the starting line oftrue life change. More students than ever are committing themselves toleadership opportunities here at LBC. I truly believe God is about to do anamazing work in and through these students. With that being said, we have ahuge announcement to make!

On Wednesday, Sept. 4, the Student Ministry is launching Encounter431.Based on Acts 4:31, we are starting a movement on Wednesday nights for all ofour students in grades 6-12. We will meet in The City from 6 to 7:30 pm toexperience powerful worship, engaging teaching and life-changing small groups.Apex and Turning Point will no longer exist as they were. God is unifying thisministry and we desire for your student to jump in this fall.

On one Thursday a month, Girls Inc. and ManUp will host a Bible study at ahost home. Starting in September, we are looking at Godly men and women ofthe Bible. Look for our Fall 2013 Student Ministry newsletter, which will have allthe dates and times for these studies.

After returning from our mission trip to Nicaragua, I have spent timereflecting on everything that we experienced while there. Since we were a teammade up of middle school aged kids and their parent(s), we were fortunate toexperience it all as a family. Our middle schoolers loved playing kickball andwhiffle ball with all of the kids! We spent time doing activities with children at alocal Christian school for the deaf, as well as planning and then having a VBS forthe kids in the community at a local church. We were also able to help out bypouring concrete and building a concrete wall at the Helping Hands with Heartsfor Christ (H3C) School for the Deaf.

I think one of the most memorable times for all of us was attending a localchurch on Sunday morning that was made up of only cinderblock walls. Wewere all blown away by how empty we thought the church was. There were nodoors or windows. There wasn’t even a pulpit! Yet, there was this overwhelmingfeeling of God! The church was full of Him and that wasall they needed!

I have realized that by taking a leap of faith andgoing on this trip to spread His story, I was blessed withso much more than I could have prepared myself for.We can all get caught up with feeling as though we justneed more. In all reality, we should all just be satisfiedwith God.

On July 26, 2012, Gordon was born.Our two year old Max was so excited tohave a new baby brother. Gordon was amonth premature, weighing 6 pounds 7ounces, but we were thrilled when thedoctors sent us home after spendingjust two days in the hospital. On July 19,2013, our world turned upside downwhen Gordon was diagnosed with threevery serious life-threatening heart defects,Tetralogy of Fallot, Pulmonary Atresia andMajor Aorta Pulmonary CollateralArteries. His heart is enlarged, witha quarter-sized hole between the left andright ventricles, no functional use ofhis deformed pulmonary artery and nopulmonary valve. He has three angel hair

pasta-size arteries supplying minimal blood to his lungs with pulse/ox levels inthe 50% - 60% range...normal is 95% to 98%.

Gordon became ill that Friday afternoon in July and we knew something wasterribly wrong. We rushed him to Lexington Medical Center’s Urgent Care, andthen, to Richland’s Children’s Hospital ICU, and finally, we were transportedto MUSC, all in less than 24 hours. Gordon spent a long week in the PediatricCardiac ICU where several tests and procedures confirmed our worst fears. Theteam of cardiac doctors at MUSC were stunned to see a one year old with theseundetected heart defects. The combination is very rare, occurring in roughly onein 20,000 babies. Dr. Frank Hanley at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital inPalo Alto, California, pioneered the surgery in 1990 which is necessary to sus-tain his life. Our immediate plans are to travel to Stanford University where Gor-don’s surgery will be performed in the next two weeks if all goes as planned.

The Lord has challenged us in so many ways as we endure this process.Since the very beginning, we have relied solely on our faith and trust inthe Lord. Our heavenly Father is in complete control and His plan is perfect. Thepeace we are experiencing surpasses all understanding. It is our prayer that thistribulation will bring honor and glory to Him and our faith will be strengthenedbeyond measure.

Thanks to the wonderful folks at Wells Fargo for setting up the GordonOwino Fund to help us with medical costs, airfare, lodging, meals, car rental andgas. We live day-to-day, like most folks on a strict budget, relying solely onArnold’s income to support our family. We are estimating our time away fromhome to be almost two months, creating seriousfinancial hardship. Without having done a formalsurvey, I believe that most Christianswould say that a prodigal is awayward child, a child who once amade a profession of faith, but is livinga lifestyle not pleasing to God.

This familiar definition is in thestory of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). However, a prodigal can beanyone we know who has goneastray... spouses, siblings, parents,grandchildren... anyone in your lifewho needs prayer to return to fullfellowship with the Lord.

We have a group that meetshere at LBC called “Praying forProdigals.” We meet everySunday afternoon at 4 pm inRoom 402 in the Adult EducationBuilding. Having the prayer supportof other believers is so encouraging.

If there is a prodigal in your life,we encourage you to pray with us. AsGod promised the children of Israel, soHe promises us: “ ‘And there is hopefor your future,’ declares the Lord.‘And your children shall return to theirland.’” (Jeremiah 31:17)

In February, 2012,the Tim Ivey SundaySchool Class prayerfullycommitted to shopmonthly for the foodpantry at LICS(Lexington InterfaithCommunity Services)as their ministry to thecommunity. The classhas thus far donatedover 1,268 pounds offood to help addressthe ongoing and critical food shortageat LICS. This ministry has definitelyhelped each member of our SundaySchool Class to realize their blessingsof abundance given to them daily.

One Sunday School Class memberremembered the time that Jesus saidthat when we reach out to help “theleast of them”, we were helping “Him”.Another class member was verythankful for the opportunity to partnerwith other churches in the Lexingtonarea to minister to the vast needs ofthe many children and adults whootherwise might not have daily food.

The members of the Tim IveySunday School Class truly believethat following Jesus always meansserving our neighbors in crisis that areless fortunate.

My involvement with theDaybreak Crisis Pregnancy Centerministry began as a result of mymother’s dedication to Daybreak as ahotline volunteer in the 1990s.

Over the years I have served innumerous capacities and have beenboth challenged and blessed by theexperience. Today, I lead a NoApologies, No Regrets Girls’ Clubthat meets at LBC in the Family Life

Center on Monday afternoons. The curriculum is abstinence and Bible-basedand is designed specifically for middle and high school girls. Kimberly Poovey,Daybreak’s Youth Program Coordinator, has worked hard to grow this ministryfrom one club in Pelion to fourteen in just a few short years. There is no doubtin our minds these clubs are much needed in today’s society, and many of themare located on public school campuses.

There are so many ways you can serve and use your gifts and talents.Give Daybreak a call at 771-6634 (the Columbia office) or at 808-0778 (theLexington office) and someone will be happy to talk with you. Involvement with this ministry also provides an opportunity to witness thework of the Holy Spirit in the world. Myprimary goal is to tell the unsaved aboutJesus; but, I also have an immensedesire to assist them in finding work.

I met an ex-convict who wassearching for employment; however, allpersonal identification had been lost andhis requests for duplicate copies wererepeatedly denied because his prisonphoto ID was more than forty-five daysold. After several of my futile attemptsto assist this person, the Lord “tookcharge.” On the very next try, itbecame evident that God hadstrategically placed three employeesin the office of Vital Records, andwithin the next ninety minutes, thisperson had obtained a copy of hisbirth certificate, a SC photo ID and anew Social Securitycard was in routeto him.

Most homelessindividuals claim apersonal, born-againrelationship with theLord; however,conversations withthem reveal that manyare confused or have beeninfluenced by the witness ofworld religions. The “harvestis plentiful but the workersare few”. Come and join us!

My involvement with StreetSide Ministry began approximately one year agoafter hearing two Sunday School classmates, Cal and Evelyn Yngve, talk abouthomeless people they were encountering on the streets of Columbia. Theministry was of particular interest because it addressed both physical andspiritual needs of the old, the young, all races, male and female, addicts,professionals, ex-convicts and yes, those that were once considered the middleclass. I later learned that one of the homeless they had encountered came froman extremely wealthy family.

Some are on the streets by choice or because of bad decisions; however,some are there because no other options are available to them. I am remindedof an individual that worked for a Columbia textile company for thirty-eightyears. Unfortunately, the plant closed leaving this poor man without a job. Hewasn’t old enough to qualify for Social Security, but apparently, he was too oldfor others to hire him. Therefore, the streets became his home.

StreetSide Ministry volunteersmeet every Monday night at5:30 pm at The Church of theApostles at 1520 Bull Street at thecorner of Hampton Street in Columbia.There are eight to ten LBC “regulars”who help as often as possible.

Recently, the numbers being fedhave grown to about 100+ eachweek. Two LBC Sunday School classeshave each accepted the cookingresponsibilities for one Monday eachmonth. Other Mondays are beingcovered by other local churches andChurch of the Apostles have openedtheir facilities for storage and somefood prep.

During the school year, for manychildren, food provided at school istheir main source of nutrition. Duringthe summer months, those samechildren rely on a Local Food Bank fortheir meals, leaving such banks inshort supply.

Though the need increasesduring summer, it is an ever-increasingproblem throughout the year. At thistime, donations are needed more thanever! Can you share one can perperson per month? Food bins arelocated in Sunday School classroomsand throughout the church campus.

At StreetSide, building relationships is a keyto building trust and sharing His good news.One of our friends, a self taught street artist known as ‘Two Peace’, gave us a couple of

his sketches in appreciation for a good meal.

The small group that I’m involved in on Wednesday nights was given theopportunity to work at Samaritan’s Well, a Lexington women’s shelter. Led byChristopher Bolding and Will Coker, we painted several bedrooms at the shelterand made them move-in ready.

I really enjoyed this experience and it was very rewarding because we wereable to work as a team and become closer as a small group while ministering tothe ladies at Samaritan’s Well.

This is the first missions opportunity I have taken part in while being amember of LBC. After participating in this project, I realize now how gratifying itis and look forward to future opportunities. ~ by Matt Rivenbark

Hi, my name isAlex Davis. This fallI will be a freshmanat Lexington HighSchool. I have beengoing to LBC almostall my life. I grewup in the Children’sMinistry and nowam proud to be part of our StudentMinistry. Before this summer, Iconsidered myself a Christian. I prayedand went to church on Sundays andWednesdays. However, I always feltempty. I was never fulfilled.

This summer changed my lifeforever. Our youth group took a trip toToccoa Falls, Georgia. I learned that ifyou want to be a true Christian andwant to forever serve Him, you haveto be all in. God does not offer apart-time ministry. I realized thatmy life was not in full-time ministryand that I was ignoring a lot ofopportunities to serve the Kingdomof God. God gives you the words tosay, the place to say them and thepeople to say them to. It is our jobto take that first step and startthe conversation.

This summer, I was lucky enoughto have the opportunity to attend aweekly Bible study just for guys, ledby our summer intern. The mostimportant thing I will take away fromthat study is God is so much biggerthan any of our problems and that theonly way that I can grow closer to Godis by reading the Bible and applying itto my life.

I am excited to see what God hasplanned for my life, especially in thesenext four years in high school. I donot know where He is going to takeme but I am all in. I am also excitedto see what God is going to do for andthrough our Student Ministry. OurStudent Ministry is going to changethe world, starting with Lexington, SC.
