This year, we have split our subjects into 7 academic areas. We have done this so you can see which subjects work well together, what careers and degrees studying these subjects together can help you progress into, and to see how our past students who studied these subjects are doing now. This doesn’t mean you have to stick to just the subjects in these areas as subjects can be chosen from more than one area, which will give you the option of a varied education.

GradesTarget grades are based on your GCSE grades and calculated using national

statistics. During the course we monitor your progress against your

aspirational grade whenever you submit any work. Tutors can therefore give

you constructive feedback and advice on how to reach the next level and, if necessary, can put support in place to

help you get there.

Learning Programmes

As a Sixth Form student you will have a personalised learning programme, enabling you to get the best results whilst at College and progress into

your chosen career.

These learning programmes specify your minimum target grades, and

your aspirational grades for each of your subjects i.e. the least you should be able to achieve and the grade you

should be aiming for.

ReportsIn addition to on-going monitoring you will have formal reviews of your progress and you and your parents/guardians will receive one interim

report and one full report each year. There will be review evenings where

you and your parents/guardians can meet with each of your subject

tutors privately to discuss your progress.

Personal TutorYour Personal Tutor’s job is to provide guidance, advice and encouragement, and help you stay on track with your studies. They deliver a programme of

tutorials to give you personal, academic and professional advice. They will also be your first port of call if anything is

bothering you, and, when you are ready to think about your next step in life, they will help you with decision-making and

applications. You will meet your Personal Tutor weekly for tutorial sessions and

study skills.

To study A Levels you will need a minimum of 3 GCSEs at grade B and 3 GCSEs at grade C including English Language and Maths. Please be aware that certain subjects have specific entry requirements.

The majority of students take four subjects in their first year, sometimes combined with a ‘short’ AS Level (e.g. Citizenship or Critical Thinking) or with one of our Enhancement courses (Pre-Medical Pre-Enterprise and Pre-Teaching).

A LevelEntry

Requirements

The Sixth Form Centre offer 30 A Levels that will give students an excellent academic background which will help them progress on to university or a career.

We do consider vocational qualifications, e.g. BTECs (at distinction or merit) as part of entry requirements for A Level programmes, but only if other GCSE results are at the required high standards too.

Entry requirements for vocational subjects can be found on the relevant course pages.

In the second year students investigate modern media industries in a British context. How has the television industry changed over the last fifty years and how has it affected society? We also look at the British film industry, popular music, and new technologies and learn how they are linked to the increasingly global nature of media production and consumption.

enjoy the campus atBlackburn College and I enjoy

learning here so want to stay on.

The facilities are excellent and you get a lot of help and support from the
