“I was an Apprentice 11 years ago. It gave me the stability and the foundations needed to work in hairdressing. I quickly learnt it wasn’t all about make-up, hair and looking great, it was about giving good customer service and working hard. After a successful bid The Skills Company has been awarded the National Apprenticeship Contract for Midlands-based company ARJOHuntleigh. The launch of the scheme heralds a new chapter in ARJOHuntleigh’s journey, with the company now offering Apprenticeships in a wide range of sectors, across a range of UK depots. Apprenticeship opportunities are now available with the company in multiple divisions including manufacturing, engineering, business administration and customer service. In addition to this, The Skills Company now also manages the

Welsh Apprenticeship Programme on behalf of ARJOHuntleigh. Callum Thomas has joined the Bridgend depot and John Walmsley and Bailey Hold have joined the Manchester depot as Apprentice Bench Engineers. Edward Bayes is their new Apprentice Service Engineer, whilst Aseri Lewasaru has also joined the company as a Customer Service Apprentice. Nicole McGlennon from ARJOHuntleigh said: “We are immensely proud that we have got this programme off the ground! Developing and training future colleagues is such a positive step for our business.” Cathy Broderick, Director of Technical Sectors at The Skills Company said: “Our partnership with ARJOHuntleigh is an excellent example of the way we are able to work with clients, recruiting and training Apprentices across a range of locations and job roles to enable companies to upskill their staff and improve productivity.”

5. Be accountable for yourself Be willing to take ownership of your choices, actions, attitude and behaviour. If things go wrong don’t blame others, reflect on your actions, take responsibility and crucially, make things right.

“After leaving school Tom Southern started a Plumbing Apprenticeship. However, he soon realised that this was not the career path he wanted to follow. He applied to The Skills Company training centre in St Helens in the hope that they would help him

to find a career direction. A programme of study was put together for him that included the opportunity to re-sit his English GCSE. Tom attended an interview for a work placement at The Dog Barn, a local company offering a grooming service, obedience training and doggy day care. After six weeks Tom was offered a Saturday job, and he knew that this was the career path he wanted to follow. Tom has now been offered full time employment at the Dog Barn. He is still attending The Skills Company training centre and with the agreement of his manager is working his shift pattern to allow him to continue to study for his GCSE English qualification. Tom said, “The Skills Company is a good place to come and learn. My work placement has taught me new transferable skills that you need in everyday life.”

The Skills Company has opened a dedicated new training centre in Salford to help local young people develop their employability skills and fast track onto an Apprenticeship. The new centre offers courses and training programmes for young people aged 16 and above, ranging from Maths and English to CV building workshops and interview training. Class sizes are smaller than at a typical college, with a maximum of 15 students per group. This allows for more one

to one time with the tutor, giving students a more personal learning experience. All students who come to the centre have the opportunity to take part in work placements in an industry of their choice, giving them the chance to gain real experience. 93% of trainees immediately progress on to an Apprenticeship or job at the end of their training. “It is our aim to help everyone that comes through our doors, to focus on their goals for the future and to help them to gain

an important advantage in the job market as they look to kick start their career.”Conrad Seaman, Salford Training Centre Manager.

The Skills Company has been selected to take part in the national BBC Make it Digital initiative. If you are 16 - 24 and prepared to commit to an 8 week training course, which includes a 3 week work placement, then we will give you the skills to get ahead in the job market.

The Skills Company & Kids Around The Clock have worked together since 2013, with many success stories.

Muraad Bashir worked with The Skills Company to complete his level 3 qualifications and is now the Operations Manager. Sarah McInerney started as an unqualified Assistant but after completing her level 3 with The Skills Company, is now a Room Lead for over 2s. Sarah had never worked with children before but said, “Being able to do my level 3 on the job was great, it gave me confidence which I don’t feel I would have got in a classroom. I don’t think a classroom would have taught me the skills I have acquired either.” Another success story is Elizabeth Cummings. Starting with the nursery in January 2012, Elizabeth signed up to do the Foundation Degree with The Skills Company. She chose the course because it is one evening per week for two hours which flexibly fits around her work and childcare. Elizabeth is now one of the Centre Managers.The group of childcare centres in Wythenshawe, Warrington and from 2016, Oldham, is owned by Rashada Bashir: “I try to encourage my employees to expand their knowledge to reach their full potential. I encourage employees to keep moving forward to achieve their goals.”
