The 2007 Junior Senior Banquet was held on April 20 beginning with the Grand March at 6:00. The theme for the evening was “Here’s To The Night!” The High School Principal, Mr. Mitch Walton introduced each Junior and Senior class member as they made their way to the banquet tables. After all were seated, a meal of steak and baked potato was served. The servers consisted of volunteer sophomores. Near the end of the meal a slideshow was presented by Autumn Wilson. It featured each member of the 2007 and 2008 classes. The pictures shown varied from day to day life to cute baby pictures.

After the banquet ended, chairs and tables were quickly cleared away to make room for the dance floor. The photographer set up and the Prom was ready to begin. Both the banquet and dance were well attended and it was a wonderful evening.

Week Ends with Variety Showcaseby Breanda Henry

After a long week of tough testing, the Drama Club treated the weary scholars, and the rest as of the student body, to an entertaining display of hidden talent. On Friday, April 27, the Drama Club put on an hour and a half long Variety Show, hosted by Kiala Downing and Nathan Gann. The two introduced each act aptly and provided a show of their own with a few well placed jokes to keep the ball rolling while the performers switched out. The school was treated to fifteen wonderful acts, consisting of musical performances and lively skits. Emily Copeland, dubbed a “Fan Favorite” by Nathan, wowed the crowd by singing the clas-sic “She’s Got You” by Patsy Cline. But the audience was shocked to discover that Austin Morgan, while playing the guitar in a duet with Jessica Anderson, had a “voice like Josh Turner,” as Khristi Lyons later commented. Mr. Walton gave almost everyone childhood flashbacks by playing on the guitar and singing, Kermit the Frog’s “Rainbow Connection.” Then he pulled Mr. Joe and Coach Thomison out of the crowd for a surprise performance of “Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road.” More talented students also took stage, and even the Spanish II classes pulled together to do “La Bamba.” The show ended on a forlorn note when Mrs. Swift lip synced to “Cry out to Jesus” as a memorial to all those who have passed on. The school was left wanting more, and definitely looking forward to an even better show next year. The Variety Showcase acts were

Sloan-Hendrix Writings Featured in Arkansas Anthology

The Arkansas Anthology is a literary magazine featuring some of the best writings by Arkansas students and their teachers. A panel of English teachers selected 100 works as finalists.

The Arkansas Anthology Writing Contest is an annual event sponsored by the Arkansas Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts. ACTELA is a non-profit, pro-fessional organization devoted to the promotion of literacy and good teaching.

Each student honored for this accom-plishment will receive an award certificate and a complimentary copy of the Arkansas Anthology 2007 as soon as it is published. It is in production now and should arrive within two weeks.

If you wish to receive an additional copy, send an updated address, or your home address, to Dr. Rob Lamm: [email protected] or P.O. Box 1890, State University, AR 72401. Phone 870-972-3043. Please include $6 to cover production and mailing for all additional copies.

Fifteen entries from Sloan-Hendrix were chosen for this year's Arkansas Anthol-ogy. The entries selected were submitted by Josh Clem, Emily Copeland, Samantha Eledge, Pawnee Forrester, Breanda Henry, Aaron Hig-ginbotham, Khristi Lyons, Lindsey Needham, Nicky Patterson, Hannah Rowsey, Brittany Burrow, Cody Broadway, Nikki Steveson, April Smith, and Donna James. Congratula-tions for your fine work!

Sloan-Hendrix Anthology Completed

The Art and Writer's Organization of Sloan-Hendrix has now completed this year's Sloan-Hendrix School Anthology. The anthol-ogy, Living Art: Scenes from Our Lives, is similar to the state anthology, but contains only works from Sloan-Hendrix. The anthology should be ready to sell by Monday, May 21. Be sure and let your parents know that for five dollars they can receive this anthology, which includes a variety of artists' works as well as many poems and writings from SHHS students grades seven through twelve. We will have some available at the awards night ceremony Monday, May 21. There is a limited amount of anthologies available, so get yours while you can! Much appreciation by sponsor Donna James is extended to her elite editors and typists, Nikki Steveson, Breanda Henry, and Amanda Patterson

Members of the Sloan-Hendrix Senior High Quiz Bowl and the Freshmen members of the Junior High Quiz Bowl travelled to Jonesboro on Wednesday, May 9 to tour

the facilities at the ASU Bioscience Institute and the Forrest L. Wood Crowley's Ridge Nature Center. SHHS students are shown here conducting a DNA test on a

strawberry at ASU. Quiz Bowl Team members on the field trip were Cody Needham, Tasha Keough, Samantha Smith, April Smith, Andrew Martin, Ryan Difani, Rebekah Hickman, Latricia Mans, Shawn Archer, Nicky Patterson, Lindsey Needham, Aaron Kiker, and Sara Groves. The students were accompanied by Senior High Quiz Bowl

Advisor Ms. Teresa Lawrey, and Mr. Brian Keough.

Students and staff members enjoyed fellowship and Mr. Walton's famous burgers during lunch on FTA Day held Friday, May 4. Future Teachers of America-Teacher for a Day is a very popular, long-running tradition at SHHS. It allows FTA members to learn to appreciate a little of what goes into a typical school day and allows staff

members to get to know their students a little better.

Johnnie Lee Snyderby Autumn Wilson

On January 1, 1989, in Pocahontas, Arkansas, Johnnie Lee Snyder was born. He is the son of Susan Houltzhouser of Ravenden, Arkansas and Johnnie Snyder of Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Johnnie’s biggest influence in life is his father. “He has taught me so many valuable lessons and has always done what he could for me,” Johnnie says. Some of Johnnie’s favorites include deer meat, the color green, the 2006 Dodge Ram Power Wagon 2500, the song “Knocking On Heaven’s Door” by Guns N’ Roses, the movie Jarhead, the book Rainbow Six, and the author Tom Clancy. Johnnie’s friends are Jeremy Brown and Shane Wells. His hobbies are playing basketball and bow hunting. Johnnie will miss the basketball games most at Sloan-Hendrix.

His favorite teacher is Coach T. Johnnie’s advice to underclassmen is, “Always be faithful to your school, to your friends, and all the people who are close to you, and in everything you do.” After graduation, Johnnie plans to join the Marine Corps.

Cable Lee Treanor by Cody Broadway

Cable Lee Treanor was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas, on May 27, 1989. He is the son of the late Gary Treanor and Peggy Treanor of Imboden. Cable’s biggest influence in life is his sister, because of her hard work and deter-mination to make something of herself. Some of Cable’s favorite things are seafood, the color red, and the 1970 Dodge Charger. Cable’s closest friends are Brian “Boo” Higginbotham, John Land, Zac Phillips, Waylon Rogers, Jake Mans and Jessie Poteet. His hobbies include watching movies and working on his car. Cable has enjoyed the Prom and Homecoming dances more than any other activities at SHHS. He also says that he will most miss seeing his friends everyday at school. Cable’s favorite teacher is Mr. Lee because “He is relaxed and easy to talk to.” His favorite classes are “Any Agri classes because I like being in the shop and making things.” Cable is proud of being a part of the FFA team, and Who’s Who. His advice to underclassmen is “Find out what you want to do with your life, and act on that. Start making preparations for your future now.” His plans for the future include attending WyoTech in Wyoming for auto collision/and refinishing, street rod, and custom fabrication.

Danny Joe TurnerOn December 24, 1988, in Houston,

Texas, Danny Joe Turner was born to Joe and Lisa Turner, both of Imboden. Danny enjoys grilled cheese sandwiches, the color gray, the song “Plastic Man” by Seether, and the movie The Island. Some of Danny’s close friends include Allen Ryals, Cory Fitzgerald, Craig Johnston, Alex Spears, Ben Davis, and Kara O’Neal. Danny enjoys playing video games and hanging out with friends, but also enjoys skateboarding every now and then. He says, “My greatest influence in life is my parents, because they support me in everything I do.” After leaving Sloan-Hendrix, Danny will miss hanging out with friends the most. His favorite teacher is Mrs. Holland because “She is crazy in a good kind of way.” To underclassmen, Danny says, “Don’t do drugs and do not be so prideful.”

Shane Jacob Wellsby Nikki Steveson

Shane Jacob Wells was born to Anthony and Dana Wells, of Ravenden Springs, on July 15, 1989, in Pocahontas, Arkansas. He says his biggest influence in life is his grandpa, Jarold Hulett. According to Shane, “He has taught me so much about life, how to do so many things, and deal with all kinds of people.” He has an abundance of friends and enjoys hanging out with them. He also enjoys working with cattle, riding horses, and hunting. His favorite song is “Friends in Low Places” by Garth Brooks. His most significant achievements were buying his own truck, receiving his beef production awards, and owning all his cattle. His favorite teacher is Mr. Joe Wallis. Shane’s goals are to marry and start a family, and start his own ranch, with many cattle.
