A World in Pictures! This is how I can aptly summarise this edition of The SNAPPER!

We have so much to showcase as the second term reaches its end. We are featuring the SNAP Gala

Fundraiser, the various outings and activities that our children were involved in at the centre and of course

our pride and joy - the SNAP children themselves! Read about Fuzli Nur-Toffar, one of our Grade 3 learners

who was recently featured as part of a SNAP documentary on the Dr Michael Mol show on SABC 3.

We are also giving away a Nature ’ s Choice hamper, see page 18 for details.

Please support us on our further fundraising drives in order for us to add another 2 classrooms to SNAP

Academy. Check out page 2 for details about our Ladies Tea taking place on 28 July. Please also join our

Facebook Page and keep up to date.

Make it happen! Esme Brink

Congratulations to the following members of staff who received accolades at the

Gala Fundraiser.

Delene joined SNAP as a tutor in January 2008. During this time she has worked with many

children and has gained wonderful experience. In September 2011 she became a workshop

tutor. She also accompanies Annalies to Bloemfontein to assist with the school that we have

opened there. Her enthusiasm for her work and willingness to learn more has won her the

Tutor of the year Award 2012.

Rita joined SNAP as a teacher of the Junior Preparatory Class in 2008. Rita has a passion for

children and is always prepared to walk the extra mile. She creates a perfect environment for

these children to blossom and grow. Her hard work and dedication has earned her the

snap ladies tea: 28 july 2012 Ladies / Friends / Parents

On 28 July we will be hosting another ladies tea fundraiser with guest

speaker, Amore Bekker. The event will take place at Curro Private School

in Durbanville . We require hostesses to host tables like last year! If you

are interested to perform as hostess for this event please e-mail

[email protected] as soon as possible. We however need all our moms

to support his event by selling tickets to friends and family. We want to add

another 2 classrooms to SNAP Academy by the end of the year.

More about the speaker:

Amore started her broadcasting career at Radio Algoa in 1990. She later

moved to Radio Goeie Hoop and then Radio KFM. She finally took the

plunge and moved to Johannesburg where currently the sweetheart pre-

senter at RSG is in charge of the very popular afternoon drive time show,

from Mondays to Fridays from 15:00 to 17:00. In 2011 she won the “ Most

popular radio presenter in South Africa ” award for a second time.

At SNAP we operate like a busy beehive. There are so many facets that are equally im-

portant and need to be addressed to see children progress in their development. The

Tutors are monitored by their Program Managers, who in turn are trained and supported

by Carol. The last training session was wonderful and Carol also had her Basic SNAP

Tutor Training candidates attend SNAP.

Workshops are in full swing. The families are empowered and the children progress. We

are overjoyed to experience these miracles each time under Carol ’ s supervision.

We also receive wonderful feedback from the South and from Pretoria.

My visit to Bloemfontein has been successful, they operate as a miniature SNAP. All the

children at SNAP Academy have shown how well they do in a loving and structured environment. To see how

they start to socialize at break time is so rewarding. Socialization is reinforced by the High Five sessions, as well

as during outings.

Becoming aware of how to be an entrepreneur is being practiced and implemented on our Entrepreneurs ’ days.

Mother ’ s Day was a wonderful experience to have Mothers, Dads and Brothers ( representing the mothers) in

the classrooms and socializing.

Nervous, but big excitement about the Dr Mol TV Show was in the air the day the shoot happened – Fuzli was a

real star! Work at the Blouvlei project is showing such progress by the dedicated tutors. This is a testimony for the

success of the SNAP Program. Well done Carol!

This term we were honoured by the visit of Mrs Elita De Klerk. It is always a pleasure to show how well our

children behave and how hard they work to make progress. To observe how teaching children in a class and one-

on-one tutoring really look, is a heartwarming experience. To see is to understand.

We also welcome our new children and their parents, as well as new staff. Hope you feel at home already! Re-

member that we have an Open Door Policy. The Stork is also very busy at SNAP – welcome to all the new ba-

bies and their proud parents! Our SNAP family is just expanding. Also, congratulations to everybody who had a

birthday in this term.

Thank you to the office staff for successfully multi-tasking in the place that is the “ De Aar Stasie ” of SNAP.

Thank you to the Grounds men and Cleaning Staff for keeping everything clean and presentable. Yes! We are

grateful for this big village who are all part of SNAP to help each child develop to his full potential. For making this

all possible, we give the glory to God.

” G ustav se avontuurlustige streep!

ʼn SNAP leerder se mamma deel hul vakansie ervaring met Naleta:

“ G raag deel ek ons ongelooflike spesiale ervaring as gesin!

Ons almal het so ʼn wonderlike, adrenalien

Hy was hier by die 6de stasie ( daar was 12 )

Thought for the month

I hear, and I forget.

I see, and I remember.

I do, and I understand.

Give children time.

Nobody likes to feel rushed, especially the child with Sensory

Processing Disorder who may take longer than others to

process new information. This child needs warm-up time just

as much as cool-down time.

Virgin Active joins us for horse riding

In April we had a few visitors at the school. Some

of them even joined us for horseriding to lend an

extra hand where needed. Virgin Active spoiled the

children by giving them and the tutors t-shirts. We

appreciate you setting time aside to join us.

Autism ribbons at school

Each tutor received an autism awareness ribbon-badge from

their child to say thank you for their love and care.

We have wonderful tutors at the moment! THANK

YOU so much for all your efforts and your patience.

Wow, how the time has flown. We are currently compiling reports for all our tutor children. This is a great time of excitement for us

as we get to relive and document all the progress our amazing children have made up to now.

We have lots happening for the next two terms, starting with an outing for our tutored children.

We will be taking them to the Kids Grand Prix Party Venue on the 12th of June to enjoy fun party activities and a magic show.

Each child will be with their tutor and facilitated throughout. We would like to thank the owner Adrian Le Roux for especially

opening his venue for us to allow our children to join in these activities in a controlled environment. Check out his Birthday

Party deals at www.connectingkidz.co.za/kidsgrandprix.htm

Our annual concert is also coming up where SNAP Education will join SNAP Academy in putting on an entertaining evening for

family and friends. Watch this space for more details.

We would also like to give a hearty “ welcome back ” to our Programme Manager, Murrie van Staden Barnard. With 35

children on the SNAP programme, it is so wonderful to have her support.

Finally I would like to thank all our amazing tutors, their love for the children and their excitement, enthusiasm and tenacity towards

every step of progress made, no matter how big or small, is inspiring. I am so honoured to call them colleagues and friends.

MOTHER ’ S DAY

The children had great fun making personalised key rings to say thank you to their lovely mommy ’ s for everything

they do. We would also like to wish all our moms well; we do hope that you were all able to feel as special as you are.

We are halfway through the year and having reached the end of the second term, we are very proud to say that our

Snap Academy learners have made good progress and learnt so many new things. Our learners have settled in well

and have also developed wonderfully emotionally and socially. Mothers day was a huge success, thanks to all our

teachers, assistants, facilitators, moms and other families/friends that made this such a lovely day.

A warm welcome to our new substitute teacher Liza van Vuuren who was permanently appointed at the beginning of the

second term. She has settled in well and are doing great with the learners. We also want to wish our Grade 2 teacher

Liesl Berry and her husband Paul Berry all the best with their new baby girl, may she bring them lots of joy, love and

pride.

A big and heart felt thank you to all our Snap Academy staff and parents for their hard work, dedication and support!

You are a great team to work with.

Vice-Principal: SNAP Academy

grade 0 (english): shonagh & deniel

Teachers Shonagh and Deniel are so proud of us because:

SIBA is saying new words nearly every day!

RIYAAZ can read and sound out his own name!

TAY-YIBAH is working hard on her fine-motor skills!

KYLE is concentrating so well at Story Time!

ANO loves to do worksheets!

LEONARDO is doing well at sorting geometric

shapes!

MAX ( our new friend ) is good at doing puzzles!

We had a lovely mini-outing to the nearby dam. We liked the ducks and geese, but Teacher Deniel was a bit scared of

the geese! Luckily Tutor Ranji and Teacher Shonagh who were also with us, are brave like us!

Our Mother ’ s Day celebration was such a happy time. Thank you to the family members who came to visit us. We are

looking forward to spending quality time with our Dads when it is Father ’ s Day

God made the sun

This term we have learned many new songs, more vocabulary and spontaneous play. It ’ s like watch-

ing a flower bud develop and grow, right in front of you. We welcomed a new friend and adjusted our

class with our new fancy “ big boy, big girl tables ” .

grade 1 (afrikaans): monique, tanee, benita and plaxdes

trots is.

grade 3 (english): hettie & elize

The grade 3 learners worked hard this term. They have done lots of Maths: subtraction, multiplication, recited tables,

read the time, etc. They also read aloud from their reader, practiced spelling and sight words every week, studied pro-

nouns, tenses and inverted commas. Our learners did handwriting patterns, creative writing and also learned about

healthy eating habits and keeping our bodies safe in Life Skills.

Our learners celebrated Mother ’ s Day by performing worship songs to their Mums and decorated the cupcakes. We

also planted our own vegetable garden and are experiencing how plants grow. What we didn ’ t do is to give up. I so

much admire our brave learners who come to school every day, each with his/her special need. Thank you Grade 3

learners for all your hard work, you are a lovely group of learners.

grade 2 (dual medium): liezl, anene & claire

This term the eager Grade 2 ’ s have been enjoying learning about verbs. The learners are also showing improvement in reading in

the group and exploring with poems. Reading to friends is also very popular in our class.

We have been listening to jokes and some of our learners have been keen on telling their own jokes. It is lovely to see them try and

develop their sense of humour.

Good progress in areas of Maths are:

-More than & less than, using different tools

-Telling the time in hours & half hours

-Estimation up to 20

We have been really busy this term as we have settled in well after the first term. I am proud of all the learners as they

have all started reading and spelling much more independently. Although the work is getting more the learners have

shown more enthusiasm towards the work. We are working on counting up to 50 in 2's, 5's and 1's. Our learners have

surprised us in how fast they are grasping all the new Maths concepts.

Mothers day was a huge success and the learners were proud to have Mom share this time with them.

In conclusion I share with you a precious moment in my class. The learners are telling each other about their PSP's, play

stations, xboxes and so on, when one who has been listening to them interrupts with "I have a mommy!"

our stars

Fuzli is an 8 year old Grade 3 pupil at SNAP Academy. He started the pro-

gram with no skills. He was unable to talk, chew, keep clothes on this

body, spinning around for hours and clapping his ears until it bled. 6 years

ago his parents were lead to believe that nothing would become of him,

until they came to SNAP. The intervention received from SNAP has

proved this theory wrong. His development has been phenomenal. So

remarkable in fact that he was recently featured on The Dr Michael Mol

show where his parents spoke about their journey and the role that SNAP

has played in his progress.

Fuzli we are so proud of you! Keep on going!

On 23 May Mrs Elita de Klerk came to visit SNAP as a vote of confidence for the work that we do.

We enjoyed showing her all our stars and she spent some time in each classroom.

high 5 social skills

Page 15

The Hi 5 program focuses on skills needed to make friends and to cope in vari-

ous social settings. The Hi 5 group provides a fun and relaxed atmosphere for

children to identify and understand other people's perspectives; encourage

team work; adapting ones social interaction/behaviour to a certain situation;

coping with constant change; anticipation and prediction.

The program is aimed at providing children with tools to deal with various emo-

tions that effect impulse control; self image and confidence.

The program focuses on dealing with the multiple aspects associated with:

* emotions ( winning and losing )

* social skills ( life skills and friendship skills )

* communication ( body language and appropriate behaviour)

* cognitive development ( creative and abstract thinking )

* memory ( memory games )

The Hi 5 program runs every Friday afternoon. One week for our Junior group and the other week for the Senior group. Your child will

attend every second week. Emails or SMS's will be sent out to remind everyone. There will be no Hi 5 during school holidays. Children

of all ages are welcome!

WE INVITE THE WHOLE FAMILY TO JOIN US FOR A
