INTRODUCTION This digital story is about the Solar System. It entails information about the sun, characteristics of the sun, the earth, characteristics of the earth, the universe, inner and outer planets.

THE UNIVERSE Our Milky Way ( whirly stars which

clustered together) and millions of others like Andromeda Galaxy ( planets, comets, meteoroids, asteroids) makes up the Universe.

Page 4: The solar system

WHAT IS THE SOLAR SYSTEM? The solar system consist of the sun and

the planets together with everything else that orbits the sun. the solar system also contains thousands of asteroids, comets and meteroids.

INNER PLANETS The first four planets are in the

inner planets. These are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. These are refer to as terrestrial planets. The inner planets are rocky.

OUTER PLANETS The other four planets are the outer planets. The outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus. The outer planets are made up of gases such as iron, nickel and carbon. The outer planets are gaseous.

SIMILARITIES BETWEEN INNER AND OUTER PLANETS They all have moons. They all have spherically shape. They all orbit on the same plane. They all resolve around the sun. They all lie on a flat plane called the

ecliptic plane. They all make up the solar system.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE INNER AND OUTER PLANETS

Inner planets are much smaller than the outer planets.

Inner planet have solid surfaces while outer planets are ball of gases with no surfaces.

Inner planets have a greater density while outer planets density is very low.

Inner planets have no rings while outer planets have rings.

Inner planets spins slowly compare to those to the outer planets.

THE SUN The sun is the center of the solar

system. It is a star. It is a hot ball of gas compromising of hydrogen and helium gas. It provides pull for the other planets. Its diameter is 1,392,000 km (865,000 miles).

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SUN

It is the main source of energy for both earth and other planets.

It gives us heat, light, energy and food. It comforts us and make our whole

existence possible. It is use for commercial living- for

example, industries within the country depends on the sun for increase productivity for certain goods relay on the sun to be made into finish goods (drying of rice)

Page 16: The solar system

CONT’D It contributes to the atmosphere and

ozone layer and helps with rainfall. Recreation activities such as picnic. Domestic purposes such as drying of

clothes. Sustain life on earth such as in the

photosynthesis process in plants. It provides Vitamin D.

THE EARTH The Earth is the third planet from the

sun and it is most dense. It is largest of the four inner planet. It is sometimes refer to as the Blue Planet. It a rotating sphere. It is made of nitrogen, oxygen and carbon. Earth has two major force; gravity and magnetism. The Earth is comprised of 79% water and 29 % gases.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EARTH

It is spherical in shape. It is the only planet in the Solar System

on which people can survive, the only one which can support life.

Its surface has water on it and its influences temperature so that water can exists as a liquid, a gas and a solid.

It is about 150 million km away from the sun.

It has one moon.

Page 21: The solar system

CONT’D It has a diameter of a 12 756 kilometers, so

is not really a large planet. It rotates on its axis once in every 24 hours

(1 Earth day). It revolves around the sun once in 365 ¼

days or one Earth year. The Earth's axis also tilts with respect to the

Sun, causing the changes of the seasons.  The atmosphere of the Earth actually

consists of 79% Nitrogen (N2), 20% Oxygen (O2) and 1% of other gases such as Carbon Dioxide (CO2).
