“Be Someone”

This coming Sunday we will celebrate our mothers. Some of our moms are still hard at work raising their children. For others the children have moved away from home, have started their own families, and moms have transitioned into the role of grand-mothers and great-grandmothers. In other instances, our moms have left this world to experience the blessing of new life in their eternal home. No matter the season of life our mothers are in, they are never far from our thoughts and are close to our hearts.

It has been said that we lose many cares when we decide not to be something - but to be someone. I will always be grateful to my mother for the ways she encouraged me to be better, but never discouraged me from being who I was.

There are some parents who push their children to be something the parents want them to be. The encouragement they offer their children is motivated by a desire to live vicariously through the lives of their children. They want their children to be the best ballplayers, the most elegant dancers, the honor students – they want their chil-dren to be the persons the parents had hoped to be themselves.

One of the best gifts parents can give their children is to point them down the path to being someone. To take away the undue pressure that children often feel to be something; to remind them that success is not so much determined by what they do, as by who they are.

Proverbs 31 describes the role of a mother: “Strength and dignity are her clothing. She opens her mouth with wisdom and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household. Her children rise up and call her happy.”

I look forward to seeing you in worship on Sunday when we honor and remember the women, who through their nurture, love and support are helping and have helped their children to be someone.

Blessings, Tom
