Commitment Sunday Sunday, November 5, is Commitment

Sunday, the end or our fall stewardship campaign, and commitment cards will be gathered that day. If you have not received a card, please contact Holly deBenedictis or Deacon Linda Smith.

This Sunday challenges each of us as church family members to pause and consider our hearts before the Lord when it comes to time, talents, spiritual gifts and treasures. As you prepare to fill out your card, consider these questions: What do I do—really do—with my time? Am I making wise use of the time that God has

given me? Am I about the right things or have I gotten off course? What are my spiritual gifts and talents and am I using them for the Lord? How might I use

them in our church or in my community? What am I giving in terms of my tithes and offerings to the Lord? Are those worthy of my

Lord? Are they biblically in line? Am I willing to make a correction concerning this matter? Please pray about what God is doing at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church and about how you can use the blessings God has given you to support this ministry.

Attention all High School students! You’re invited for Pizza and

Who’s Who in the Reformation

Other Reformers

Although most people associate the Reformation with Martin Luther, he was far from the only one involved. The picture below was painted by an unknown artist or artists of the German School between 1625 and 1650. It shows Luther sitting at a table surrounded by other reformers. In front of the table are representatives of the Roman Catholic church who are trying to blow out the light of the Gospel, symbolized by the candle on the table. The picture is an ideal since many of the men were not contemporaries. It also shows a harmony which was desired but often did not exist among the Lutheran, Reformed, and Anglican churches. Most of the reformers are identified in the picture, but some names are difficult to read.

Back Row (l to r): unknown figure standing in profile; Johannes Oecolampadius (1482-1531); Martin Bucer (1491-1551); William Whitaker (1548-95); unknown; Huldrych Zwingli (1484-1531); John Foxe (1517-87); William Perkins (1558-1602); Heinrich Bullinger (1504-75).

Around the table (l to r): John Wycliffe (c.1325-84); Theodore Beza (1519-1605); John Calvin (1509-1564); Martin Luther (1483-1546); Philip Melancthon (1497-1560); Jan Hus (1372-1415).

In front of the table (l to r): a monk; a cardinal; an elector; a catholic king; a pope; a devil; a Franciscan.

Hymn Story — Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying

Philipp Nicolai, who wrote both the words and the music for this hymn, was born on August 10, 1556, in at Mengeringhausen, Hesse, Germany, where his father was a Lutheran pastor. He studied theology at the University of Erfurt and at the University of Wittenberg. Nicolai was ordained in 1583 and served several parishes in Germany. He died on October 26, 1608, after a short illness. He is

commemorated on October 26 on the ELCA calendar.

This hymn was originally published in 1599 in a collection of devotional poetry by Nicolai. Since then it has appeared in almost 200 hymnals. The tune, Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, is considered one of the finest ever written. It has inspired many other composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach, who based one of his

most famous cantatas on it.

Catherine Winkworth was born on September 11, 1827, London, but spent most of her life in Manchester. In 1845, she spent a year in Dresden and developed an interest in German chorales. She was also active in the women’s rights movement and supported education for girls. On July 1, 1878, Winkworth died suddenly of heart disease near Geneva, Switzerland. She is commemorated on that day on the ELCA calendar.

Winkworth is considered to have been one the finest translators of hymns. She is particularly

noted for her translations from German, and is credited with doing more than anyone else to bring the German chorale tradition to English speakers. Her first book of translations was published around 1854. Evangelical Lutheran Worship includes twenty hymns which were translated by Winkworth.

Drawing of Philipp Nicolai done

Catherine Winkworth

1 Wake, awake, for night is flying, The watchmen on the heights are crying; Awake, Jerusalem, at last. Midnight hears the welcome voices, And at the thrilling cry rejoices: "Come forth, you maidens! Night is past. The bridegroom comes! Awake; Your lamps with gladness take!" Alleluia! Prepare yourselves to meet the Lord, Whose light has stirred the waiting guard.

2 Zion hears the watchmen singing, And in her heart new joy is springing, She wakes, she rises from her gloom, For her Lord comes down all-glorious, The strong in grace, in truth victorious, Her Star is ris'n, her light is come. Oh, come, you Blessed One, Lord Jesus, God's own Son. Sing hosanna! We go until the halls we view Where you have bid us dine with you.

3 Now let all the heav'ns adore you, And saints and angels sing before you. The harps and cymbals all unite. Of one pearl each shining portal, Where, dwelling with the choir immortal, We gather round your dazzling light. No eye has seen, no ear Has yet been trained to hear. What joy is ours! Crescendos rise; your halls resound; Hosannas blend in cosmic sound
