H OLY S PIRIT L UTHERAN CHURCH N OVEMBER 2016 T HE S PIRIT Thoughts from Pastor Robin “The Good News in Jesus Christ is that He died for you (and for me), rose from the dead, ascended into heaven and brings us forgiveness of sins and eternal life. God loves us!” …Bishop Elizabeth Eaton I was blessed to attend the Bishop’s Leadership Retreat in Frederick a few weeks ago and it was a joy and an honor to meet and get to know our church-wide Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton. I can as- sure you she is a woman of great faith and integrity. She was open and available to any and all conver- sations…and oh, did she get an ear full! She heard the great work of many of the churches in our syn- od and she took note intently of the great struggles in some of our congregations. She listened and she preached and she supported. And throughout the 3 days that I spent with her, there was one consistent message and that is that we always must remember The Good News of Jesus Christ! We can have all the programs, stud- ies, services, meetings, plans and actions we want, but if we don’t do them in the name of spreading God’s love to all people through Jesus Christ, then all we say are empty words. So, in this season of thanks. Let us take time to thank those around us. I especially thank Bish- op Elizabeth Eaton for her leadership and our synod Bishop Bill Gohl for his sense of call for being a voice of Jesus’ love for All people in this world! And may we thank our God!

THE SPIRIT

Thoughts from Pastor Robin

“The Good News in Jesus Christ is that He died for you (and for me), rose

from the dead, ascended into heaven and brings us forgiveness of sins and

eternal life. God loves us!”

…Bishop Elizabeth Eaton

I was blessed to attend the Bishop’s Leadership Retreat in Frederick a few weeks ago and it

was a joy and an honor to meet and get to know our church-wide Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton. I can as-

sure you she is a woman of great faith and integrity. She was open and available to any and all conver-

sations…and oh, did she get an ear full! She heard the great work of many of the churches in our syn-

od and she took note intently of the great struggles in some of our congregations. She listened and she

preached and she supported.

And throughout the 3 days that I spent with her, there was one consistent message and that is

that we always must remember The Good News of Jesus Christ! We can have all the programs, stud-

ies, services, meetings, plans and actions we want, but if we don’t do them in the name of spreading

God’s love to all people through Jesus Christ, then all we say are empty words.

So, in this season of thanks. Let us take time to thank those around us. I especially thank Bish-

op Elizabeth Eaton for her leadership and our synod Bishop Bill Gohl for his sense of call for being a

voice of Jesus’ love for All people in this world! And may we thank our God!

Ladies Retreat

On Saturday, September 17, ten ladies from Holy Spirit enjoyed a day of learning, fellowship, and service at the Bell Cedars Retreat House at Carroll Lutheran Village. The retreat was planned and led by Holly de Benedictis and Deacon Linda. Our Bible study focused on the book of Psalms, and we talked about how the different types of psalms reflected different times in our lives: praise, lament, confession, anger, wisdom, worship, and thanksgiving. Thanks to the efforts of Sharon Miller, who assembled absolutely everything we needed, we made cards for our shut-ins as a service project. We also enjoyed yummy breakfast goodies and a lunch of burgers and hot dogs cooked on the grill and eaten outside on the deck. We all had a great time and encourage more of you to join us the next time

Hymn Story — For All the Saints

For All the Saints is considered by many to be the finest hymn ever written by Wil-liam Walsham How (1823-1897), an Anglican priest who became the first Bishop of Wake-field in 1888. According to hymnary.org, he wrote more than 60 hymns. Of these, over 30 are still in common use, including three in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. When it was first published in 1864, the hymn was sung to the tune Sarum, by Joseph Barnaby. In 1906, it was published in the English Hymnal and set to a new tune composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) called Sine Nomine. Vaughan Williams (an unhyphenated surname) was an important English composer whose works included symphonies, operas, ballets, and chamber music. He collected English folk songs and preserved many of them which were in danger of being lost because they had not been written down. He often used the tunes in his compositions, including many hymns. This was not the case with Sine Nomine, however. The name is Latin for “without name.” and the phrase was often used during the Renaissance for original tunes.

Deacon Linda

1 For all the saints who from their labors rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia! Alleluia!

2 Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might; thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, their one true light. Alleluia! Alleluia!

3 Oh, blest communion, fellowship divine, we feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia! Alleluia!

4 And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia! Alleluia!

5 The golden evening brightens in the west; soon, soon to faithful servants cometh rest; sweet is the calm of paradise the blest. Alleluia! Alleluia!

6 But then there breaks a yet more glorious day: the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia! Alleluia!

7 From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Alleluia! Alleluia!

House Quilt The 50th Anniversary Committee, with help from each family in our congrega-tion, is creating a commemorative quilt. Each square of the quilt will resemble a house. We invite each family to choose one of these blocks, available before Sunday services and after the 8:30 Sunday service, and to place your family name on the quilt block. Special pens will be provided for signing the square, but must stay with the blocks and cannot be taken home with you. House quilt squares will also be available for signing at the November 13 Ice Cream Social and Congregational Meeting. All squares will be signed before Advent and will then be sewn together to create a quilt in honor of our 50th Anniversary. It is your family that makes our Holy Spirit family the special one that it is. Please share the love of your family with us by signing a house quilt square soon!

Thank you

blessed to be a part of such a caring congregation. Virginia/ Ginny Marriott
