The sparkle of a gem
Daniel Libeskind - the internationally acclaimed poet among
architects - creates his first ever apartment building in Ger-
many with SAPPHIRE in Berlin. A magical phenomenon --
as spectacular and rare as the precious stone after which
Libeskind named the property.
Now, after numerous public and monumental buildings all
over the world, Daniel Libeskind returns to Berlin, where
he takes on what he calls the most demanding of all chal-
lenges: the construction of an apartment building. SAP-
PHIRE in Berlin-Mitte is his first ever residential property
in Germany! An architectural statement with his signa-
ture corners and angles, yet – as measured by his over-
all oeuvre – a rare gem with the sparkle of a sapphire.
Each of the 70 apartments is an individual Libeskind, a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for each resident. And a
boon for all of Berlin.

visionary oeuvre
He is considered the poet among architects, as a creative mind
who tells stories with his designs. Daniel Libeskind was born
in Poland, grew up in Israel and the United States and is one
of the most famous contemporary architects in the world. His
buildings are characterized by a striking, exciting originality.
"I love this building. I've been lucky to build dozens of
museums. But to me the biggest challenge is to build
a place where people live, and not something ex-
travagant or something unusual, but something on a
normal, beautiful street in Berlin."
Libeskind uses not only a complex formal language for his
architecture, but also the power of symbols. They convey
the stories behind his buildings, mediate between past
and future, interpret the environment and reflect his vi-
sions. In so doing, he draws from a rich source of raw,
daring, emotional and radical creativity in his designs
and plans. Hence Libeskind creates architectural mas-
terpieces that are never boring and never uniform. It
is often memorable buildings that lastingly shape their
environment.

Each building by the hand of Daniel Libeskind is an explora-
tion of its environment. On the one hand, SAPPHIRE closes
the gap at the corner of Chausseestrasse and Schwartz-
kopffstrasse, where it lends a new quality to the neighbor-
hood. On the other hand, it sharply stands out from its sur-
roundings with Libeskind's typical edges and diagonals.
It thereby has an unmistakable presence and gives the
whole street a clear identification point. The exciting fa-
cade shimmers and sparkles depending on the light and
lends the site its brilliant, magical light.

daniel's declaraTion of love To berlin
Exciting, unconventional and full of energy - northern
Berlin-Mitte is considered one of the most exciting parts
of the city with the greatest development potential. Daniel
Libeskind returns to Berlin after 15 years with SAPPHIRE,
an architectural statement with its distinctive corners and
edges. To a place that still retains the qualities of an un-
polished jewel itself. And this in the heart of Berlin, just a
few blocks away from the most established addresses of
the metropolis.
Today it is this area around Chausseestraße that is con-
stantly filled with new life. Here in the middle of Berlin,
a never before seen creative urbanity is both in the air
and becoming increasingly visible.
With SAPPHIRE, Daniel Libeskind enters into this dia-
logue.

The magic of The muTable
Berlin Mitte is the city district that has gone through one of
the most spectacular metamorphoses since the fall of the
Berlin Wall. Historical center, seat of government, cultural
stronghold and trendy social scene all at the same time -
this is where the city that enjoys its reputation for being
so endlessly mutable as to be indefinable had found its
center. Quite different from just a little ways north of here
on Chausseestrasse: Only a few blocks from the estab-
lished addresses and the boom of the Germany's capi-
tal, a potential for development which lay dormant for
many years is currently blazing a trail with unexpected
power. And now, with SAPPHIRE, it has been given its
own landmark.

Already the gateway to the city by the 17th century, today
Chausseestrasse is evidence of a new urbanity and vitality.
Here, the typical Berlin-Mitte pulse is spilling over into the
neighborhood around SAPPHIRE and can be felt in nu-
merous developments and in their spirit of change: From
the vibrant and lively Torstrasse with its trendy bars, cafes
and restaurants, to established urban green spaces and
enthusiastically approached, modern parks – all this cre-
ates an inspiring environment in its interaction with con-
temporary architecture. Here, surrounded by the cre-
ative mix of bohemian shops, temporary clubs, trendy
galleries and young boutiques, East and West continue
to grow closer together. This is where the spirit of the
avant-garde meets a history full of change. Here, excit-
ing breaks are creating a new dynamic all of their own.

Daniel Libeskind is breaking new ground with his facade
design for SAPPHIRE. Handmade tiles specially made in
Italy are being used for to cladding the skin of a building
for the first time. These tiles have been designed and
manufactured using a special ceramic-titanium material
that is extremely resistant and also has valuable bioactive
properties. In addition to being self-cleaning, the façade
creates activated oxygen in a biochemical reaction with
sunlight, which purifies the air and breaks down envi-
ronmental pollutants. The polygonal surfaces of the tiles
create visual highlights, which reveal a delicate struc-
tural dimension to the facade with their light edges.
Depending on the light and viewing angle, SAPPHIRE
shimmers in a multi-faceted play of colors from silvers
to cornflower blue to blue-green.

The archiTecT’s signaTure
While the unmistakable Libeskind signature is evident
from the asymmetrical cubature of the building's exterior,
it comes to life even more impressively in SAPPHIRE’s
interior. There is an almost poetic approach, whereby
Daniel Libeskind creates a sculpture to be lived in and
experienced with all of your senses. He has developed
unusual visual axes and perspectives in the form of
asymmetries and the repeatedly unresolved right an-
gle, SAPPHIRE is a unique living experience. And for
any future residents, it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportu-
nity to be part of this holistic composition.

living: a synThesis of The arTs
For Daniel Libeskind, the creation of residential spaces is
the highest form of architecture. He has devoted himself
with the utmost passion to providing a space for daily
life, which responds to people's many individual needs,
wishes and dreams. He has developed unusual visual
axes and perspectives in the form of asymmetries and
the repeatedly unresolved right angle. Light becomes
a versatile design tool. What results is a habitable syn-
thesis of the arts – unique and limited, with each indi-
vidual apartment bearing the unmistakable signature
of Daniel Libeskind.

Each of the 2 to 4-bedroom apartments in SAPPHIRE is
unique and tailored to the needs of people living in the
21st century. At the same time, they reflect a declaration of
love to Berlin, to the special spirit of the city. Flexibility is
reflected in the different apartment types that fulfill a vari-
ety of needs in sizes ranging from about 388 ft2 to 1,755
ft2 (36 m2 to 163 m2). Terraces, loggias and balconies
extend the living areas and serve as linking elements
to the city. Community areas in the inner courtyard and
on the roof terrace provide additional places to meet.
And in the public café planned for the ground floor,
SAPPHIRE also opens itself up to the street and its sur-
