These words speak the desire to bring the people back home, back to God. Does Jesus personally know these people? Some, yes, but not most. Does Jesus even love those that “kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it?” Amaz- ingly, yes. Jesus’ love is complete. As you gaze across the landscape from the perch of Centenary UMC, you will see new homes and businesses developing, schools, busy roads, and many people driving by or living in this area. How is our love? We, like Jesus, will not know most of these people personally. However, they are God’s people. Not all of them will agree with our beliefs or our desires for the world. Some may dislike our faith or more likely, not even regard it at all. How is our compassion for this community? Do we long to gather them into the goodness of God? In Matthew another scene on a hill is prominent. “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid…. Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. We cannot get around it as a church. We are called to be light in this world. How Is Our Love?

Just outside of Jerusalem is a massive hill where you can gaze on almost the entirety of the city.

It was to this hill that Jesus fled to pray right before his arrest and crucifixion. While visiting Jeru-

salem, I sat at the top of this same hill looking across at the same city some 2,000 years later. It

was a beautiful day with an absolutely impressive view. Jerusalem is a very busy and diverse city.

There it was before you in all its splendor. People, from different backgrounds, were constantly

moving and interacting with each other, conducting business. This ancient city filled with tourists

and people who call it home. As I sat on this hill, it was easy to imagine this activity. This city just

looked alive!

Jesus loved this city. Even as many of its leaders and people worked against his ministry, Jesus’

compassion was sincere. He declares, “Jerusalem, Jerusalem the city that kills the prophets and

stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a

hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!” (Matthew 23:37) These words

speak of tenderness, love and compassion. These words speak the desire to bring the people

back home, back to God. Does Jesus personally know these people? Some, yes, but not most.

Does Jesus even love those that “kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it?” Amaz-

ingly, yes. Jesus’ love is complete.

I am sure that you have noticed, every time you come to Centenary church, you come to the top of

a small hill. Here, the view is great! You can see much of the surrounding north side of

Evansville. As we seek to follow Jesus, I ask about your love. As you gaze across the landscape

from the perch of Centenary UMC, you will see new homes and businesses developing, schools,

busy roads, and many people driving by or living in this area. How is our love? We, like Jesus,

will not know most of these people personally. However, they are God’s people. Not all of them

will agree with our beliefs or our desires for the world. Some may dislike our faith or more likely,

not even regard it at all. How is our compassion for this community? Do we long to gather them

into the goodness of God?

In Matthew another scene on a hill is prominent. “You are the light of the world. A city built on a

hill cannot be hid…. Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and

give glory to your Father in heaven. We cannot get around it as a church. We are called to be

light in this world. We are a city (community of people) on a hill. We are called to have love,

tenderness and compassion, as we long to gather God’s children as a “hen gathers her

brood under her wings.” We are a people with a mission. How is our love?

Dear Centenary Sewing Gals: Below is a revised schedule. Feb. 4: Finish hemming any pants, begin heart potholders, or work on adult bibs or catheter bags for nursing homes Feb. 11: Decorative pillow covers Feb. 18 Purses Feb. 25: Finish purses, UFO day March: Little dresses for Africa--Sherri found a different design for some little dresses, so we will be making some of those and some of the ones like we did last year. Call (812) f459-2643 or email me if you have questions. Sharon Hollon

In a related matter, we received the following letter from Deaconess Riley Children’s Services. Dear Ladies, Thank you so much for the kind donation of lovely and very colorful pillowcases for the children here at Deaconess Riley. The children will love having them on their beds and they will provide comfort to them during this difficult. We appreciate people that put forth their time, talent and treasure for such a wonderful cause. We want you to know that you have touched so many of the children’s lives with your special donation. We thank you for joining with us in this important and heartfelt mission. Sincerely, Lisa Lantaff Child Life Assistant Deaconess Riley Children’s Service (Thanks to Sharon and our sewing ladies for this wonderful service to our community.)

Centenary is very fortunate to reach people outside of the weekly services. Everyone has access to the

church web site and can read news on our Facebook page. We have now ventured further into the

digital world with the addition of our new electronic sign on the corner of our church lot. If anyone has

any information that they need posted on any of the social media, please feel free to notify Keith Schmett (812-582-

0519) or contact Sue at the church office (812-867-3920). We will try and get that information out as soon as pos-

sible. I am still exploring and learning how to program the new sign and would appreciate any comments about

how to improve what is on the display. Blessings,

Keith

We will begin Wednesday night Easter cantata practice on Feb. 7 at 7:00pm. Regular choir member practice will begin at 7:45pm. There will also be Sunday cantata practice when it can be worked into our Sunday after worship schedule. It is a busy time for everyone and I do not want to cause problems. If you have suggestions, see me. I’ll be very grateful! Thanks, Miriam Seibert.

Carl Sterchi has moved to California to live close to his family. He is greatly missed at church services and functions. He also has a birthday coming up on February 8th. No doubt, he would like to hear from you! If you would like to contact him, his new address is: 1006 Hawkshead Circle, San Ramon, CA 94583.

SCRIP PROGRAM BLESSES CHURCH

A huge thank you goes out to everyone for your support of Centenary's Scrip program this past year! The

2017 profit was approximately $3,700!! One third of that was due to the record breaking December sales!

Monies dispersed in 2017 amounted to $2,596 with $900 to the 150th celebration dinner, $736 for the

FLC landscaping project, $500 to Good Neighbors, $260 to church maintenance, and $200 to the Alms/

hardship fund. Your purchases of the cards we carry for the local businesses is very helpful. Sales of Cul-

vers, Donut Bank, Gracies, Hacienda, Los Bravos, Los Tres Caminos, and Spudz and Stuff cards donate

10% back to the church. GD Ritzy's card sales donate 15% back.

Please continue shopping, dining, and gift giving with Scrip. Cards are available each Sunday after church

in the coffee room.

(The following was written for a January Newsletter which we did not publish. But it’s never too late to say “thanks.”) The Stockers (Mark and Marsha) wish to thank our Centenary Church family for the food, cards, calls, transportation and visits during my recent surgery. The prayer shawl I received was beautiful. It helped me take my mind off the situation and gave me patience. I know the hands that make the shawls are blessed and those blessings pass on to the people who receive them. I’m a witness of this. Thank you again for all the kindness shown to us. Mark Stocker
