Centenary United Methodis t Church Established 1867 The Spire March 2019 Stories Needed!!! Recently, I came across a quote from C.S. Lewis that I think is absolutely wonderful and necessary for the church today in the world. If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were precisely those who thought most of the next. It is since Chris- tians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this.Have we lost sight? Have we ceased to think about, imagine or lost the ability to see the breaking in kingdom of God? If so, has this led to our ineffectiveness in this world? C.S. Lewis might say Yes.In the gospels, following Jesus seems to be all about sight. In the gospel of John, the fa- mous statement to Nathanael about following Jesus is Come and see.In the gospel of Mark, healing miracles of the blind receiving sight seem to coincide with the blindness and need for sight in the disciples. Of course, the parables are Jesusway of helping his listeners to see a reality dif- ferent from the reality around them. Thus, in following Christ, our eyes become open to what God is doing in the world. However, present day church is hard pressed to answer when asked about the picture of the kingdom or what God is doing in the world. Often, the closest we get to thinking about the nextworld is that if we have faith we get to go to heaven. This provides us with no picture of Gods kingdom. Salvation becomes just a ticket, not a new reality in God. Even when we talk about the virtues of the kingdom like peace, justice, mercy, and love, these virtues become hollow and empty words that feel nothing more than idealist sentiment because we have no picture to help them become alive and visible in our midst. We are so used to and invested in reality as it is that it is almost impossible to see the newness of God in our world. Flannery OConner, a famous Catho- lic fiction writer, declared that she wrote shocking, grotesquestories because it was necessary to help us who have lost imagination to see Gods beautiful kingdom breaking in. However, the church today often becomes a shell of what it is meant to be. We get caught in a moralistic religion that paints a picture of better than or good enough. As Jesus was a great story teller (the parables), we need stories. Currently, this seems to be our number one project in the church together: I want us to tell each other true stories that re- veal Gods kingdom both in our church and in our lives out in the world. For example, Greg Unfried recently told a story in Sunday worship about parking in the farthest parking spots from the work door, and how this action became contagious. As a new supervisor, he intentionally decided to park farther away so there were plenty of spaces for anyone. Next thing he knew, a fellow worker was parking farther away next to him. It is an image of the nextworld when we see leaders as servants. This may seem like a small story, but its often in the little details that Gods kingdom is most revealed. Hopefully, stories like this will prick imagination and create expectation. Eventual- ly, maybe we will prefer to live within the nextworld because we have sight of something better. So PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, share with me your stories. They are important. Pastor Danny Walker

Stories Needed!!!

Recently, I came across a quote from C.S. Lewis that I think is absolutely wonderful and

necessary for the church today in the world. “If you read history you will find that the Christians who

did most for the present world were precisely those who thought most of the next. It is since Chris-

tians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this.”

Have we lost sight? Have we ceased to think about, imagine or lost the ability to see the breaking

in kingdom of God? If so, has this led to our ineffectiveness in this world? C.S. Lewis might say

“Yes.”

In the gospels, following Jesus seems to be all about sight. In the gospel of John, the fa-

mous statement to Nathanael about following Jesus is “Come and see.” In the gospel of Mark,

healing miracles of the blind receiving sight seem to coincide with the blindness and need for sight

in the disciples. Of course, the parables are Jesus’ way of helping his listeners to see a reality dif-

ferent from the reality around them. Thus, in following Christ, our eyes become open to what God

is doing in the world.

However, present day church is hard pressed to answer when asked about the picture of

the kingdom or what God is doing in the world. Often, the closest we get to thinking about the

“next” world is that if we have faith we get to go to heaven. This provides us with no picture of

God’s kingdom. Salvation becomes just a ticket, not a new reality in God. Even when we talk

about the virtues of the kingdom like peace, justice, mercy, and love, these virtues become hollow

and empty words that feel nothing more than idealist sentiment because we have no picture to help

them become alive and visible in our midst. We are so used to and invested in reality as it is that it

is almost impossible to see the newness of God in our world. Flannery O’Conner, a famous Catho-

lic fiction writer, declared that she wrote shocking, “grotesque” stories because it was necessary to

help us who have lost imagination to see God’s beautiful kingdom breaking in. However, the

church today often becomes a shell of what it is meant to be. We get caught in a moralistic religion

that paints a picture of better than or good enough.

As Jesus was a great story teller (the parables), we need stories. Currently, this seems to

be our number one project in the church together: I want us to tell each other true stories that re-

veal God’s kingdom both in our church and in our lives out in the world. For example, Greg Unfried

recently told a story in Sunday worship about parking in the farthest parking spots from the work

door, and how this action became contagious. As a new supervisor, he intentionally decided to

park farther away so there were plenty of spaces for anyone. Next thing he knew, a fellow worker

was parking farther away next to him. It is an image of the “next” world when we see leaders as

servants. This may seem like a small story, but it’s often in the little details that God’s kingdom is

most revealed. Hopefully, stories like this will prick imagination and create expectation. Eventual-

ly, maybe we will prefer to live within the “next” world because we have sight of something better.

So PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, share with me your stories. They are important.

Centenary Bell Choir was formed around the year 2000. Three octaves of hand bells and

three octaves of chimes were purchased by the church. A choir has been active at

intervals since that time. Twelve to thirteen people are needed for a full choir and usually

2-3 bells are assigned to each person. If you are interested in joining our bell choir, we welcome you, and

we will help you learn the techniques of bell ringing. We are not professional musicians. Some of us have

very limited knowledge of reaching music; others are more proficient. We all have a love of the sounds of

music produced by these beautiful instruments. Hand bell sounds are pure and clear and unfiltered. We

also have added a xylophone, occasionally a flute, and sometimes a piano accompaniment.

As we practice, we hear how the melodies and harmonies combine, resulting in such beautiful music. We

try to present a musical selection each month. We practice each Wednesday at 6:30PM.

It’s sewing time again! The Centenary Sewing group will meet on Thursdays,

beginning February 28th. They will meet in the Family Life Center after the

Good Neighbors Club finishes their lunchtime activities, probably around 1:30

or 2:00pm. Once again, they will make Little Dresses for Africa! Anyone who

likes to sew is invited to join the group. Contact Sharon Hollon at

(812-459-2643) for more information!

Go Ahead and Chuckle ~It’s Good For You

A merry heart does good, like medicine.. Prov. 17:22

UPWARD BASKETBALL has completed another season. Thanks to all the volunteers

who helped in any way. The young people who participated in the program were

blessed by your efforts!

A belated “thank you” to all who contributed to make Christmas special for seven shut-ins in our congregation. With your contributions and assistance from the SCRIP funds, we were able to purchase fresh fruit and personal gifts that each needed. We also in-cluded the homemade cookies you provided. Each shut-in wanted the congregation to know how much they appreciated your kindness.

If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it was, and always will be yours. If it never returns, it was never yours to begin with. If it just sits in your living room, messes up your stuff, eats your food, uses your telephone, takes your money, and never behaves as if you actually set it free in the first place, you either married it or gave birth to it!

EASTER CANTATA Easter falls on April 21st this year. We have begun working on the cantata that will be presented to the church that Sunday. We are blessed to have very talented musicians in our church who are happy to share their abilities with our church family. We meet on Wednesday nights at 7:00, and I try to dismiss by 8:30. We are always glad to have new members join us. I’m glad to have sugges-tions given to me by members or those who worship with us. My phone is 812-867-3053 or call the church (812-867-3920) and I will get your message. Our cantata is “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” by Bradley Knight. It is a beautiful offering. Miriam Seibert, Choir Director

Joel 2:12-13

That is why the Lord says,

"Turn to me now, while there is time.

Give me your hearts.

Come with fasting, weeping, and

mourning.

13 Don't tear your clothing in your grief,

but tear your hearts instead."

Return to the Lord your God,

for he is merciful and compassionate,

slow to get angry and filled with unfail-

ing love.

He is eager to relent and not punish.
