St. Ludmila Catholic Church
PASTOR’S CORNER
You may recall that during Lent we focused on the Catholic Social Teachings of the Catholic
Church. Catholic Social Teachings has two components, which are charity and working towards
systematic changes in our local community.
From my experience, St. Ludmila Parish is Social Justice-minded in word and actions. Prior to
the current restrictions, Deacon Mark Sandersfeld visited a number of individuals incarcerated
locally and around the state of Iowa. Sharon Langenberg coordinated parishioners preparing and serving
meals at the Willis Dady overflow shelter on Saturday evenings during the winter months. Recently, the St.
Ludmila Council of St. Vincent De Paul Society has continued this ministry. Deacon Jim and Sue Berger
continue to chair and coordinate our ministry with the local council of the St. Vincent De Paul Society. Prior
to the restrictions, they met weekly to disperse financial assistance to individuals in need on the southwest side
of Cedar Rapids. Cindy Day serves as our board representative to Metro Catholic Outreach and Bob Bartosh
delivers the food that is collected for MCO weekly.
The various videos shown during the season of Lent challenged us to not only proclaim our faith, but to
recognize individually that we can make a difference. If you would like to review these videos, you can look at
them at www.dbqarch.org/catholic-social-teachings. It has been interesting to read the newspaper and learn
how people are cleaning up the environment - walking more, driving less, cleaning up ditches, stream and
parks in their local area, being more conscientious about recycling and being aware of packaging. The list goes
on and on. It is a proven fact that our “stay-in-place” orders have had a positive impact on the environment;
may this continue after the restrictions are lifted.
Recently I have received numerous emails and communications in regards to local organizations that are
helping those in need. I have heard a number of parishioners say they were appreciative of their $1,200
stimulus check, but recognized others were in greater need. So they intend to share part or all of this gift with
these local organizations. May God bless you for your generosity.
St. Ludmila Parish supports a variety of organizations throughout the year by collecting food, clothing,
household needs, etc. During Advent the Social Justice Committee has a giving tree inviting parishioners to
support the following organizations: Bridgehaven, Catherine McAuley Center, Catholic Worker House, Willis
Dady Center, Mission of Hope, Emergency Fund for Parishioners and St. Vincent De Paul. This year we had a
“Souper Bowl” competition providing food for Metro Catholic Outreach and St. Vincent De Paul. We also
collect food each week for Metro Catholic Outreach. This year our Lenten project was the Catherine
McAuley Center. We recently sent them a check for $1,313 in addition to delivering all the supplies that were
donated.
As a parish we financially support the following organizations monthly with our Local Area Needs
Collection:
$150 ~ Mission of Hope
$200 ~ Green Square Meals
$300 ~ Catholic Worker House
$500 ~ St. Vincent De Paul
$500 ~ Metro Catholic Outreach
With all the state restrictions placed on us individually and on these organizations, it has been difficult to go
shopping, to prepare meals or to financially support these organizations. However, Metro Catholic Outreach
continues to gather food and distribute it to those in need. Green Square Meals prepares and serves meals
daily. St. Vincent De Paul is still collecting food and distributing to their clients. St. Vincent De Paul is not
able to take other donations at this time.
If you are interested in supporting these local organizations, you are welcome to contact them directly. If
you would like to drop off donations of food and/or cash donations to St. Ludmila Parish, we will make sure
they get to the respective places in a timely manner.
Also, are you aware of any St. Ludmila parishioners who are in need at this time? If so, please contact Fr.
Ken directly via email at [email protected] or by phone at 319-362-7282. All referrals will be kept
confidential. It is our desire as a parish to minister spiritually, physically and financially to those in need.
Catholic Social Teaching is a foundational teaching of our Catholic faith. Thank you for the many ways you
are the eyes, the hands and the feet of Christ in our world today. As we continue to celebrate this Easter
Season, may we bring the light, hope and peace of the resurrected Christ to those in need. Thank you for your
prayerful, physical and financial support of those who live on the margins of life.
Peace,
Fr. Kenneth J. Glaser

attendance. Fr. Ken has been in contact with all
families that have lost a loved one during this time

allowed to gather again.

services. We will be needing volunteers to:
Serve as hospitality ministers by greeting guests
and handing out worship aides
Serve as liturgical ministers including, lectors
and Eucharistic Ministers
If you are interested in helping, please email
Sharon at [email protected] and she will
contact you as we begin planning funerals.
Happy Mother’s Day Mother’s Day became a national holiday in 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson to celebrate mothers. Depending on the family and culture, this is celebrated in a variety of ways. Today, on behalf of St. Ludmila, I offer you the blessing of the Church as we celebrate this day. We recognized all mothers and those who fulfill the role of “mother” in the lives of others. Whether your mother is living or deceased, may you take time today to pause, if only briefly, to thank them for choosing the gift of life! Happy Mother’s Day!

Local Catholic Radio
Many of us are spending more time at home and
perhaps looking for something new or different to
watch or listen to. This was introduced last year,
but perhaps in this uncertain time, you are looking
for some uplifting programming. We do have a
local Catholic Radio Station, KMMK 88.7 FM.
Their mission is to communicate the Gospel
message and lead others to Christ.
As you prepare to work in your garden, sitting in
your back yard or working in the garage, I invite
you to tune in to check out their programming. A
list of programming can be found at:
https://kmmk-fm.org/programming.
Parish Communications:
With the current decision by the four Bishops in
Iowa, it is uncertain when we will be able to gather
for Mass. As soon as we are given permission, we
will incorporate a plan that we are currently
working on.
In the meantime, it is our desire to have open
communication with the people of St. Ludmila
Parish. How are we doing this?
