The Sunday Good News Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Church of Saint John Bosco August 2, 2015

HIS WORD TODAY BY Rev. William J. Reilly

First Reading: Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15

The Israelites complain that Moses led them to the desert and there is no food

for them there. Then the Lord told Moses he would rain down bread from

heaven so the people might know that AI, the Lord, am your God. God did as

he had promised and in the morning the people found the bread that he had

given them.

Second Reading: Ephesians 4:17, 20-24

Paul tells the Ephesians that they must give up their old way of life and live in

accordance with the truth that Christ has brought them. He reminds them to

acquire a spiritual way of thinking, and to remember that they are made in

God’s image and act accordingly.

Gospel: John 6:24-35

The people Jesus had fed on five loaves of bread follow him, and Jesus tells

them they should not be looking for perishable food, but for spiritual food. The

people want a sign that they should believe in him. He explains that he is the

bread of life, and anyone who believes will not experience hunger or thirst. The

people did not fully understand that he was speaking in the

spiritual sense, and not of actual food.

“Then the Lord said to Moses: ‘I will now rain down bread from heaven for

you. Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion; thus I

will test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not…I have heard

the grumbling of the Israelites’… ‘Do not work for food that perishes but for

the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of God will give you’…

‘What can we do to accomplish the works of God?’”

The gospel of John does not include the story of the last supper, or the

institution of the Eucharist. It does however, in the sixth chapter, teach us of the

gift of life-giving bread which is Jesus Himself.

What God did for the people in the desert, offering the manna for their

survival, He promised to do for us. Jesus wished to remain with His

people, as we learn His concern in the priestly prayer in John’s gospel. He

chose a way which made and makes this possible.

The Eucharist is the gift of Jesus to sustain us in the Christian life. It is the abiding

Presence by which He nourishes us and feeds us. It is the gift of His Presence,

waiting to be acknowledged and adored. The Eucharist is the gift for our

survival today.

Ask the Lord to increase your desire for the Eucharist and avoid routine and

monotony, but eagerly reach out for the gift He gives.

Transfiguration

O Christ,

agent of creation,

with light you parted

the primordial darkness,

in light your works praise you.

Direct our paths in your light!

The days bow down

before you, O Christ,

the sun lays its light and

splendor at your feet,

for you assumed and

transformed our mortal nature.

On the holy mountain of Tabor,

Moses and Elijah addressed the disciples,

crying out: “Behold the Savior!

Behold the Christ,

whom we had foretold as God of old.”

The unchanging nature of God,

now joined to mortal humanity,

shone on the apostles

in a manner beyond all telling,

showing them a light

akin to immaterial divinity.

ST. JOHN BOSCO TEENS HELP FEED the HUNGRY

Recently, several teens, with the support of parents, volunteer Kayla Weidick, and FF Director Carla Bednar, helped serve meals to almost one-hundred people at the Salvation Army’s food kitchen in Hazleton. Coordinated by Arlene Stagg, dedicated adult volunteers from our parish prepare and serve food there on a monthly basis. Thank you, Arlene, for inviting our teens to help with this important program! America is a land of plenty, so it’s hard to believe that hunger is a reality for one in every six Americans. But it’s true. And in the Greater Hazleton area, many families experience the daily hardships associated with hunger. When asked, “Have there been times in the past twelve months when you did not have enough money to buy food?” twenty-six percent of residents replied “yes,” a rate higher than the national average of twenty-three percent. All teens are invited to join us on Wednesday, August 19th when we’ll again serve at Hazleton’s Salvation Army lunch program. Just call the Faith Formation office, 570-788-1997, ext. 6, to volunteer!
