JUNE 18, 2017 - CORPUS CHRISTI DAILY LITURGY

for the Week of June 18, 2017 A Letter From Fr. Gerard

Today’s Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

(Corpus Christi) began in a quiet Belgian convent in the thirteenth

century with the vision of a holy nun, St. Juliana. In her vision, she

saw the moon, full and bright. It was glorious, except that one part

of its disk was in shadow.

The meaning of the vision was then revealed to her: the moon

represented the liturgical year; the shadow, a missing feast in honor

of the Blessed Sacrament. Juliana spoke to her confessor about what

she had seen. Amazingly, within thirty-five years, Pope Urban IV

had established the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ, in

the Church’s universal calendar. Hundreds of years later, in 1849,

Pope Pius IX added the Feast of the Precious Blood celebrated on

July 1st. Following the Second Vatican Council, the two liturgies

become one solemnity in honor of the Most Holy Body and Blood of

Christ.

Corpus Christi is one of the most Catholic of days, an expression of

our faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.

And yet, this celebration is also outward looking, carrying the liturgy

out of the church and into the streets. We come together in all our

diversity and we celebrate our unity.

Following the second reading in the Mass for the Solemnity of the

Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ comes an optional sequence,

Lauda Sion, traditionally attributed to St. Thomas Aquinas. The

sequence is both a song of praise and an instruction on the real

presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Let us listen to the words of the

shorter form of the sequence:

Lo! The angel’s food is given

To the pilgrim who has striven;

See the children’s bread from heaven,

which on dogs may not be spent.

Truth the ancient types fulfilling,

Isaac bound, a victim willing,

Paschal lamb, its lifeblood spilling,

manna to the fathers sent.

Very bread, good shepherd, tend us,

Jesu, of your love befriend us,

You refresh us, you defend us,

Your eternal goodness send us

In the land of life to see.

You who all things can and know,

Who on earth such food bestow,

Grant us with your saints, though lowest,

Where the heavenly feast you show,

Fellow heirs and guests to be. Amen. Alleluia.

As we celebrate this great feast of faith, let us worship what

St. Thomas Aquinas did not hesitate to call, “the greatest miracle

that Christ ever worked on earth…My Body…My Blood”.

Before the greatness of this mystery, let us exclaim with St.

Augustine, “O sacrament of devotion! O Sign of unity! O Bond

of charity!” Let us also repeat St. Thomas Aquinas’ prayer of

devotion in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament: “O Sacrament

most holy! O Sacrament Divine! All praise and all thanksgiving

be every moment Thine!”

JUNE 18, 2017 - CORPUS CHRISTI

Faith Direct

Did you know that June 21 - the first day of summer - is National eGiving Day? Saint Ann can take particular joy in this celebration, as the response to eGiving in our church has been wonderful.

To build on this success, I am setting a National eGiving Day Challenge. My goal is for Saint Ann families to put envelopes on a permanent summer vacation and make the switch to eGiving. This is especially important in the summer months, when many families may be out of town some weekends and Saint Ann does not receive their envelopes. It’s easy for people to forget to catch up once they’re back, and our weekly offertory can fluctuate as a result – making it harder to predict how much we will have to sustain our year-round ministries.

The more families who welcome the beginning of summer by taking this National eGiving Day Challenge, the more consistency and predictable our offertory will be month after month – and this will help us do even more to spread Christ’s love throughout the community.

Being part of this challenge is simple: Visit www.faithdirect.net and use our church code: NJ709, or by calling Vito Pulito at (609) 882-6491, ext.119 who will personally assist you in signing up.

Thank you for your continued support of our parish family with your time and talents as well as treasure!

God Bless You, Fr. Gerard F. Lynch, O.SS.T.
