“Thanks, Apple”On September 9th, Apple users woke to an unexpected gift. All updated iProducts had received U2’s album “Songs of In-

nocence”, delivered by Apple Inc. Many users flocked to social media to protest Apple’s actions citing privacy violations. Five days after, Apple released a tool to remove it, but they couldn’t remove the shock many users felt upon finding this album among their purchased music.

I Always Feel Like... Somebody’s Watching MeMSpy is a new surveillance app in which users pay a fee to gain access to monitor another device. Through this app, users can

see a live copy of everything that happens on another device. Everything that is typed, saved, or viewed, as well as the device’s location is made available. The MSpy app has caused much controversy. Many say that it is a major breech in privacy. MSpy officials have defended themselves by saying the app is for concerned parents and bosses to monitor device use. "My Spy is designed for monitoring your children, employees or others on a smartphone or mobile device that you own or have proper consent to monitor. You are required to notify users of the device that they are being monitored." However, the MSpy web-site markets the app as a spy bugging device, even referring to the phone in question as the "target." "After...installation the application runs in a stealth mode, so it is undetectable and completely invisible for the target phone’s user." This kind of anonymity would not be necessary if the person was made aware of the software.

Artist Rights or Human Rights? On the 10th of September Texas legalized “creepshots”, also known as “upskirt photos” where the photographer takes photos of women from under their skirts without their consent or usually their knowledge. This photo can be taken of any person on the street; a child, a grandma, a mother, any unsuspecting skirt wearer. On September 18th, Texas Court of Criminal Appeals came to the conclusion that even if it is “unethical” they should not bar the the artists right to expression, because they are far more important than the women’s right to privacy.

How it all started . . .Carl started fishing at a very young age. As a boy he would go out fishing with his father. He fishes at least once a week especially when he wants to relax and take his mind off of things. Carl fishes anywhere that he can, even going out of state, for the perfect catch. even goes out of state. He competes in as many competitions as possible, using his 21 foot blue Triton boat. He has dedi- cated his life to fishing striving to get better by competing against many high level fishers. The sport of fishing is very complex and based upon Carl’s dedication, it is more than just an activ-ity. He spends countless hours a year fish-ing and wouldn’t have it any other way. About the Bass . . .Carl started out with trout and salmon fishing as a young boy. He saw bass fishing on TV then decided he wanted to take on that challenge because they are often dif-ficult to catch. He entered his first competition in hopes of doing well, but wasn’t anticipating taking home a $200 prize and a large trophy.Today, he is involved with three fishing groups; Capitol City Bass Club, Mt. St. Helens Bass Club, and B.A.S.S. Many of the competitions he enters are youth and high school, but he also enters adult fishing competitions sometimes too. Waiting for fish rarely gets frustrating, according to Carl, because you are always running around casting lines and doing things around the boat.

What to know . . .Carl says to be good at fishing make sure to go during the right season. Check lake reports frequently to make sure that the conditions are right and go to the right type of lake, for the type of fish desired. One technique Carl uses is called the “run and gun”. This strategy involves going to a spot, fish it quickly and intensely, then leaving, go to another spot, and doing the same thing all over again. This is helpful when fishing in a new lake, because it is impossible to know where all the good spots are yet. Carl loves fishing and wouldn’t choose to do anything else, and THS wishes him well in his upcoming competition.

On a typical fishing season weekend, Carl Jackson can be found casting and reeling his fishing line trying to catch the perfect Bass. He wakes up at dawn to find the perfect fishing spot and begins practicing the skills that earned him a spot at Regionals in California where he will be competing on October 12, 2014.
