Dear Parishioners, Friends, and Visitors to the Cathedral, Hi! I am Father Arnel A. Lagman, a diocesan priest from the Prelature of Isabela de Basilan. I’m also, a professed member of the Third Order Franciscans. I was born on August 18, 1974 in a humble town of Lamitan in our island, and ordained on June 17, 2005 in St. Peter the Apostle Parish in my hometown. In 1988, when I was in my second year of high school, I was one of those who were kidnapped by the Lost Command Group in our rebel infested island. Since my ordination to the diaconate, the Bishop appointed me as the Chancellor of our Prelature. After my ordination to the priesthood, he also assigned me to develop a small Catholic community on another island. In 2006, I was assigned to serve my hometown parish as parochial vicar for six months. Then, I was transferred to the Cathedral. In December 2007, I was assigned by the Bishop to celebrate the Advent and Christmas seasons in a community situated in a far-flung and critical area. The community requested a priest to celebrate the Lenten season and Holy Week for them. I will never ever forget that Holy Week Monday in 2008; when I started my 6:00 am Mass, we heard gun shots. Those who were attending the Mass were frightened and crying. A batch of our farmers were ambushed only 4 kilometers away from the chapel, and four of our farmers died on the spot, including the driver. On the evening of Wednesday of Holy Week, an M-79 shell exploded 30 meters away from my rectory. 2009 to 2012 - I was appointed as Administrator of St. Isabel de Portugal Cathedral Parish. On April 13, 2010, the international terrorist group Abu Sayyaf bombed our cathedral. Then in June of 2012, I was transferred to serve St. Anthony of Padua Parish. 2015 to 2017 - Being the Prelature Mission Coordinator, I was given a dual assignment, that is, to do the Mission Appeal in the United States, and to cater to the spiritual needs of San Roque de Tairan Parish in a predominantly Muslim and hazardous area. Now, I am here in Cleveland, assigned to serve the Philippine American Ministry and the Cathedral. When I arrived on February 4th, it was snowing. It was my very first time to see lots of snow, and the temperature was extremely cold. Deep within me, I was like a child who wants to jump out of the car and roll over the snow and sing “I wanna build a snowman.” But I was not allowed to go out for fear that I might get sick, so I just stayed in the house singing “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” in the month of February. I am overwhelmed by the warm welcome accorded to me by brother priests, the Bishop, and also the people around. I am so happy to be here. Father Arnel Lagman

Daily Meditations for Lent - Copies of daily meditations for Lent from “The Word Among Us” are available at the doors of the Cathedral. Please feel free to take a copy for your personal prayer.

Cathedral Parish MissionMarch 11 & 18, at 4:00 pm

In recent years, Christianity, and especially the Catholic faith, have become subject to increasing criticism, ridicule, and rejection by the popular culture of our country. A large percentage of Millennials seem uninterested in the organized Church of their family heritage as they easily embrace the cultural views and virtues promoted in the media. In the face of these pressures, how can faithful Catholics remain faithful? Join us for two evenings of reflection as we look at some of the more practical and creative ways several authors offer, putting together a mosaic of ideas that, hopefully, can help sustain us spiritually in our increasing secular culture. The sessions will be by Rev. Gerard Gonda O.S.B., on Sunday, March 11, & Sunday, March 18, at 4:00 pm.

Operation Rice Bowl funds poverty and hunger alleviation programs, both locally and internationally. Pick up a “Rice Bowl” in the church. Details on page 4.

Fast & Abstinence - Good Friday, March 30, is a day of abstinence from meat and also days of fast (that is, limited to a single full meal). The law of abstinence binds all Catholics 14 years and older. The law of fasting binds all Catholics from their 18th birthday until their 59th birthday (Canons 97 and 1252). The other Fridays of the season of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. One should seek to do more rather than less. Fast and abstinence on the days prescribed should be considered a minimum response to the Lord’s call to penance and conversion.

The Social Action Ministry will meet Sunday, February 25th immediately following the 12:15 Mass, to plan the 2018 Easter luncheon for our downtown neighbors who are homeless or lacking in basic needs. We sponsor and serve this luncheon annually on the Saturday prior to Palm Sunday at the Bishop Cosgrove Center. This year, the luncheon will be held on March 24. We welcome your assistance in planning this most important event. Please join us.

Stewardship of the Earth - As Christians, we believe that the earth is entrusted to our faithful stewardship. We are not its owners, but its caretakers on behalf of God. How can I be a good steward? – Plastic bags and other plastic garbage carelessly allowed to blow away kill as many as 1,000,000 aquatic creatures a year! Yet, these items can be easily recycled into new items. Many grocery stores have bins in which you can place these bags for recycling. Better yet, consider making use of reusable cloth shopping bags available near the checkout aisles of many groceries. For more ideas visit: <saintjohncathedral.com/recycle>.`

Serving the Poor in Our MidstEach day, numerous people come to the rectory office seeking assistance. Through your generosity, and with the assistance of the workers at the Bp. Cosgrove Center, we are able to fill some of their needs. Listed below is a report on the assistance the Cathedral has offered this past month, and on your generosity in support of these efforts.

A Community of Justice & Love A Sweet Twist to our Homeless Collection - This

weekend Feb. 17/18, the Social Action Ministry will be collecting personal items for the Homeless. In addition, we are also asking for donations of BAGS OF CANDY (pieces wrapped individually) for the Cosgrove Easter Luncheon sponsored by the Social Action Ministry. Last year, over 300 bags, filled with an assortment

of candies, were distributed to the adult guests. We also provided 100 Easter baskets that were given to the children. What is an Easter basket without candy? To continue this 13 year old tradition, we need your help. Your monetary donations will allow us to purchase the balance of the candy needed for this eagerly awaited event. Lenten Rice Bowl Project - This Lenten season, join our faith community, and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States, in a life-changing journey of encounter with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your family’s CRS Rice Bowl at the doors of the church. Through CRS Rice Bowl, we encounter those living in conditions of poverty around the world, and have the opportunity to practice the corporal and spiritual works of mercy through our prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. We encounter Cesia in Nicaragua, where despite a lack of economic opportunity, young people pursue their dreams by building businesses to better their lives. How can you work to improve the lives of others this Lent? How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? Visit <crsricebowl.org> for more. Cosgrove Center Pantry – Personal Shoppers Needed! - Do you like to shop? Cook? Help Others? The Cosgrove Center has a monthly pantry distribution. Guests are allowed to select canned and boxed goods, fresh produce, and meats and eggs that best suit their personal needs. Guests are accompanied through the pantry by a personal shopper, who helps make selections based upon household size. We are in need of reliable help to assist in the pantry each month. We are currently in need of volunteers February 21st & 23rd, and March 21st & 23rd. If you are interested, please contact Althea VanHorn, at 216-781-8262, ext. 14.

From Feb. 14 to Mar. 25, you’re invited to join other Christians for 40 Days for Life: 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. You’re also invited to stand and peacefully pray anytime

between 7 am & 7 pm during the 40 day vigil, in the public right-of-way outside Preterm (12000 Shaker Blvd., Cleveland) or Planned Parenthood (25350 Rockside Road, Bedford Heights). Contact John Noall at <[email protected] or 216-245-9744 for more information or see the website <40daysforlife.com/cleveland>.

1. You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, and abide in the shade of the Almighty, say to the Lord: "My Refuge, my stronghold, my God in whom I trust!"2. Since he clings to me in love, I will free him, protect him for he knows my name. When he calls I shall answer: "I am with you." I will save him in distress and give him glory.3. With length of life I will content him; I shall let him see my saving power. To the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit give praise for ever. Amen.

Homily

CreedI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(All bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

In your love remember me because of your goodness. Lead me, Lord. The Lord is good and just, showing the way. God guides the meek in ways of truth and justice; God leads the poor.

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord, who abide in his shadow for life, say to the Lord: "My refuge, my rock in whom I trust."The snare of the fowler will never capture you, and famine will bring you no fear: under his wings your refuge, his faithfulness your shield. You need not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day; though thousands fall about you, near you it shall not come.Choir: He that hath made his refuge God Isaac Watts / T. ClarkHe that hath made his refuge God shall find a most secure abode, Shall walk all day beneath his shade; there at night shall rest his head. Then will I say, "My God, thy power shall be my fortress and my tower; I, that am formed of feeble dust, make thine almighty arm my trust."
