The Gambol Quarterly Newsletter of the Southwest Agility Team
http://www.southwestagilityteam.org
This month we thought we would try something a little
different, a message from the Veep!
SWAT has finished a very success-ful Spring Show Season. Thank you to everyone who helped at these trials, we could not have done it without each of you! Our AKC Show trials must have broken a record of having 7 teams who earned MACHs, so we had 7 cakes of all shapes, sizes & flavors. Con-gratulations to everyone! Thanks to hospitality for making sure everyone had enough cake.
As we go into the Fall Show season, I want to thank everyone that has stepped up to fill our key positions. Without all of you the shows would not happen. Speak-ing of shows, we are looking for workers for the 2012 trials. We can always use trial chairpersons, chief course-builders, scorekeep-ers, hospitality and secretary help. If you wish to help, please let one of the SWAT Board Mem-bers know.
We have some exciting things happening in 2012, so please make sure you watch the website and your emails for updates and
notifications. One of those items is a brand new USDAA Event hap-pening January 27 – 29, 2012. This show will be inside at the NM Expo. Christy Parlapiano is our Trial Chairperson (Thanks Chris-ty!), so please help us make this new show a success and contact her and volunteer.
On a different note, our Presi-dent, Corlyn Burkett was unable to send a note to the membership this quarter, as she and her fam-ily are dealing with life-changing events. As she deals with those challenges, we want to let her know that the SWAT Membership is sending positive thoughts and energy her way and want to see her at an event soon.
Have a great fall trial season!
Mica Tyler, Vice President
MACH/ADCH Hob Nob Driving Force UD RAE MXF (Hemi), owned, trained, loved, and agility partner to Mica Tyler. Hemi earned his MACH at the SWAT AKC trial on June 24.

General Meeting Minutes April 27, 2011
Call to Order: President Corlyn Burkett called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM in the conference room at the Moses Law Firm, 612 1st St, Albuquerque, NM.
Attendance: The meeting was attended by the follow-ing members: Becky Wolfe, Kathy Koch, Bill Koch, Linda Johns, Kim Terrill, Ken Shoe-maker, Linda Shoemaker, Carol Kuna, Corlyn Burkett, Gina Brown, Julie Fillinger, Mica Tyler, Cheri Williams, Dawn Hamilton, Linda Kipp, Laura Echeverria, and WCA representative Diane Davis.
Secretary’s Report: The February minutes were ac-cepted as published.
Treasurer’s Report: The current balance in the checking account is ap-proximately $10,000. Detail report is filed for audit with the official minutes.
Corresponding Secretary’s Report: No report.
Committee Reports:
The spring NADAC trial • is on schedule.
The summer AKC trial is • on schedule. The fun match dates are • a direct conflict with an AKC trial in Cloudcroft. Julie Fillinger agreed to be the chairman. Gene Tatum will be the equip-ment manager. Julie will find a secretary. The fall AKC trial is • staffed except for needing a Chief Course Builder. The applica-tion has been filed and is pending because of issues with the emer-gency coordinator. The fall NADAC trial is • partially staffed. The fall USDAA trial is • partially staffed. The Gerry Brown semi-• nar went well. Everyone asked that we bring him back again next year. Laura will work with Gerry on dates.Leslie Eide was injured • at the USDAA trial in March. We will make sure there are tennis balls on the tent stakes at future trials at the park in Rio Rancho. Corlyn added some sup-plies to the medical kit.
New Business:
Additional trials: There •
is agreement that we’d like to have more trials, but we have to find a site and a date and determine whether to have an AKC or USDAA trial. USDAA trials are not big money makers, but people use lots of vouchers to enter these trials so they are obvi-ously popular with the people who make our trials possible by taking on big jobs. AKC trials always make money. Kim will ask Christy Parlapiano if she would work on a new trial. The NADAC A-frame • that we borrow needs work before the trial. We can probably avoid buying a new A-frame or skins until the other venues make a com-mitment to rubber surfaces.
Next meeting: The next general meeting will be on Wednesday, August 3 at 7 pm at the Flying Star Café on Juan Tabo on the patio.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:54 PM.
Respectfully submitted, Laura Echeverria, Secretary

Committee Reports:The fun match cleared • more than $800. We will do a one-day fun match during the same weekend next year. The fall AKC trial is on • track. The fall NADAC trial is • staffed. The premium is almost ready to be submitted to NADAC for approval. Cheri Williams will talk to the various training centers about asking people to volunteer at the trial as an oppor-tunity to learn about trials in a low-key environment. The fall USDAA trial • is staffed. There will be double runs for all starters and advanced level classes. There will be double snooker and jumpers classes at the masters level. The first round of the Steeplechase will be held Friday afternoon after the DAM tourna-ment is over.Laura Echeverria has • been working with En-chantment Pet Resort and Gerry Brown to set dates for a spring 2012 seminar. She is waiting to hear the dates for the planned Nancy Gyes seminar at EPR to schedule dates for our seminar.Ray Hodel, as equip-• ment manager, re-ported that the timer
has been fixed. He is working on fixing the chute barrels and getting new weights for the teeters. As rubber contacts are now allowed by both USDAA and AKC, Ray will get prices for mak-ing rubber skins for those venues. We will continue to use Dawn’s contacts for NADAC. Ray will also research prices for breakaway tires. Ray will also make sure a second first-aid kit is available in the cab of the truck.
New Business:We will be hosting an • additional USDAA trial January 27 – 29, 2012 at Expo NM.We are looking into • hosting the USDAA Rocky Mountain Re-gionals in 2012, with regular classes, region-al classes and interna-tional classes. We are currently searching for a site and date.We have some equip-• ment that should be auctioned off to make room in the trailer/Ray’s barn. We’ll do a silent auction at the Fall AKC trial for every-thing but the NADAC compatible jumps. Those will be auc-tioned at the NADAC trial.USDAA and AKC both • have active junior handler programs with scholarships available to junior handlers. We’ll try to promote these programs at the appropriate trials.

Our bylaws say that voting members will have special • benefits, including a membership roster, the Gam-bol and priority enrollment in seminars. Mica asked that everyone think of other benefits we can provide voting members to encourage people to become vot-ing members. One popular suggestion was that the club resume presenting personalized championship ribbons to voting members who finish champion-ships while members, regardless of where they finish the title. If you have ideas for membership benefits, please contact Mica. The December meeting will be on December 10th at • Acoma Training Center. It will be a Christmas party, with details to follow.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 PM.

We Put The Fun In Fun MatchWith a few changes, SWAT had its annual fun match at the Sherriff’s Posse Grounds on July 9.
Instead of two days, it was changed to one day which worked out wonderfully for all who attended. True to Albuquerque weather, it was sunny and hot, and everyone thanked the Posse Grounds cover to get out of the heat! The courses this year were from prior year championships; the standard course was from 2006 AKC Nationals and the jumpers course from 2003 Steeplechase Finals. We had a lot of new faces with new dogs and experienced han-dlers with their baby dogs. They all greeted those courses with such promise that all experienced handlers out there should take notice! It was a lot of fun to watch them run the courses.
A special thanks to Richard Hansen for being our equipment manager, master course builder, course support and all around go-to person. Without you, we could not have done it! Thanks to Donna Crary-Johnson for making sure the grounds were fantastic. And to Julie Fillinger standing in as Trial Chairperson. The trial made $800 for our treasury.
Until next year’s fun match, run clean, run fast and don’t forget to hug your dog!
--Mica Tyler Vice-President, SWAT

News & Notes
The USDAA Regionals May Be Coming to a Venue Near You - Stay Tuned!SWAT is investigating the possibility of hosting the USDAA Rocky Mountain Regionals for 2012 in Albuquer-que. Donna Johnson, our site coordinator, is looking into possible sites, and we look forward to being in the state rotation for USDAA to host this event. We will need to call on everyone to help with this exciting event.
SWAT Members Going to AKC InvitationalHuge congratulations to the following SWAT teams who received invitations to the AKC Agility Invitational in Tampa in December: Donna Johnson and Icy, Miniature American Shepherd; Chris Sanks and Indy, Border Terrier; Steve Moon and Rocky, Miniature Schnauzer.
If there are others I don’t know about, I’m sorry for omitting you. Please send me an email at [email protected], and I will announce your invitation.
Good luck. We are proud of you.

Mark Your Calendar - SWAT Christmas Party, Dec. 10SWAT’s Annual Christmas party will be held the second week end of December 2011. The host site will be Acoma Training Center on South Wyoming.
There will be a brief year-end meeting and then we will tear the wrapping paper off for the doggie gift exchange. There will be lots of great, tasty, home-made food.
You won’t want to miss it!

AKC and USDAA Trials Same Days Same Location Nov. 2012
Have you ever thought it might be possible to run AKC and USDAA the same day? Would you be crazy
enough to try it? You will have your chance on Nov. 10-11, 2012, when an AKC trial will be held at the Dairy Barn at Expo New Mexico, and a USDAA trial will be run right next door at the Horse Arena the same week end.
The AKC all-breed trial, including mixed breeds, will be sponsored by the English Setter Association of America (ESAA) in conjunction with their National Specialty. The other events of the ESAA National will be at the Marriott Pyramid. This will be a two-day, one judge trial on Satur-day and Sunday, Nov. 10-11, 2012. Classes offered will be Standard, JWW, and T2B on Saturday and Standard and JWW on Sunday. This is a one-time event.
Not many English Setters run agility so in order to give those who do an opportunity to compete at the Nation-al, ESAA is sponsoring the all-breed trials with an English Setters only trial running simultaneously. The way this works is there are two catalogs. English Setters run first in each class in which they are entered (16,” 20,” 24,” and possibly 26”), and they are scored with the other English Setters. After they run in each class, the scorekeeper flips to the other catalog and records the scores of all the oth-ers running in that class.
The week end will kick off with SWAT’s fall USDAA trial on Friday, Nov. 9, and USDAA will continue on Saturday and Sunday. If you usually run AKC but are curious about USDAA, at the very least, this will be an opportunity to do your AKC runs and then pop over to the Horse Arena and check out what USDAA is all about. SWAT’s USDAA trial is held the same week end every year.
For those true fanatics who might consider running both, the ESAA AKC trial will work closely with SWAT to try to schedule the classes to make it possible to do that.
Here are the key personnel for the ESAA AKC trial:
Trial Chair, Sue Johnson, Lavon TX, [email protected] Local Contact, Jill Warren, Santa Fe NM, [email protected] Chief Course Builder, Carl Necker, Los Alamos NM, [email protected] Trial Secretary, Cindy Blanton, [email protected] Judge, David Nauer
We are pleased to offer this extra chance to run AKC lo-cally in 2012 and hope to see you there.

A Special Story
Ed Note: If you are looking for a way to get exercise to keep in shape for agility and to support a special cause and to support those in our sport who are battling cancer or have friends or family who are battling cancer, you might be interested in the story of our own Becky Wolfe, who participated in the Susam G. Kommen Walk to support breast cancer cure research and support.
The Susan G. Komen Walk is a three-day walk that covers 60 miles. It happens in 11 different cities across the United States this year. It usually starts in Boston in July and ends in San Diego in November. The participants have to be willing to train for those 60 miles but also raise $2300 to participate. Susan G. Komen raises money for breast cancer research, education, needed mammograms, wig support and other support. The money raised in the past has helped provide research grants to bring on new treatments that allow us to help 3.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States alone. There are 458,000 people in the world who lose their lives to breast cancer each year. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. People will continue to walk 60 miles, 3 days with one goal in mind -- wiping out breast cancer. As a survivor of breast cancer, I have traveled that journey. I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others and for fu-ture generations. I had originally started out to walk the fall of 2010; however those plans didn’t work out. This was in honor of family members, work friends, mothers of my students and agility friends who have fought breast cancer but also the ones who had lost their lives. So last summer a good friend and I had then planned to walk in 2011. We hadn’t determined the city yet. Then she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. She lost the battle last Sept. So Seattle was a place we had talked about. It is a way to honor her memory by going to Seattle but also walking on the last days she was alive. So in Sept. I will walk the streets, hills and places around Seattle. I will walk in rain or sunshine. I will walk for the people whom I have known who have been touched by breast cancer -- whether as a survivor or one who lost the battle. However, I will also walk for future generations so they may never know or experience breast cancer. I have never walked 60 miles before. I used to do longer backpack trips, but never 60 miles in 3 days. So we have a training schedule that we have been following. Since Feb. I have walked 506 miles (the dogs have walked about 350 of the miles with me). We have shorter walks 5-6 miles during the weekdays along with some cross-training activities (biking and swimming). Then on the weekends we have been working up to longer walks 16-17 miles one day and then next a 10-12 mile walk. I have dealt with blisters, aching knees and sore feet, but you never give up, knowing you can make a differ-ence in someone’s life. I am not only busy training, but also involved in activities to raise the $2300 that I need to raise for the event. If people want to join in supporting me they can contact me or go to http://www.the3day.org/goto/BW olfe. You asked why I walk. I am not a researcher or scientist, so I don’t have the answers for breast cancer. However, I believe
that I have the power to make the difference in one person’s life by walking. Because by walking it is part of my journey in cancer----by giving back to someone else. To give hope, bring awareness so that one day we will find an answer to wipe out breast cancer. I walk because I can . Because each step I take, each mile I complete ---it is closer to an answer.

Southwest Agility Team Veterans Class Report* By Jessica Brown
Southwest Agility Team (SWAT) offered Veterans classes at their March 25–27, 2011 trial. Originally there were five dogs entered, but two, unfortunately, withdrew.
Scout, an 11½-year-old All- American handled by Jessi-ca Brown, was four gambles from her PDCH-Platinum at the start of the trial. Scout had been running Gamblers only since being semi-retired after earning LAA-Gold in December. Scout qualified in Snooker (her favorite!) as well as in both days of Jumpers. She enjoyed jumping 12” and getting out of her crate for something far more exciting than a potty break. Jessica entered Scout only in games classes. Jessica waved at judge Frank Holik as she and Scout ran by the #7 weave poles in Snooker, exclaiming, “We don’t do weaves!”
Fionn, a Border Collie turning nine in April, was handled by USDAA judge Kent Mahan. Fionn earned his ADCH at the age of four, and was in the Grand Prix Semifinals for two years in a row. When Fionn began dropping 22” bars, Kent moved him to the Performance Program. Fionn began having problems clearing 16”, and was later diagnosed with Cushing’s disease. In May of 2010, Kent retired Fionn. USDAA announced the Veterans pro-gram four months after Fionn received radiation treat-ment for a pituitary gland tumor and regained muscle mass. Kent un-retired Fionn and he was happy to run again, qualifying in Snooker and Gamblers. Fionn was entered in all the offered Veterans classes. Kent decided to limit to two runs per day for future trials as Fionn continues to regain strength.
Jibar, a 10.5-year-old Labrador owned by Mary Aynn Shoemate, competed in Veterans classes on Sunday. He qualified in Jumpers. Jibar competes in several agility venues, canine freestyle, and is an assistance dog. Agil-ity helps maintain Jibar’s figure. He is still running and happy, and Mary Aynn wanted to give him the opportu-nity to do so at 16”.
Congratulations to the Veterans (and their owners) for their successful runs at SWAT. Thanks to everyone who is supporting USDAA’s new Veterans Program! Veterans (and their owners) for their successful runs at SWAT. Thanks to everyone who is supporting USDAA’s new Veterans Program!

This year’s competitor dinner will be held on the fully restored Bell of Louisville steam riverboat. At the age of 95, the boat is a National Historic Landmark, but with plenty of life left in her, she will take us on a leisurely dinner cruise on the Ohio River.
The warm-up class this year is the Grand Prix Finals course from last year, and Sunday’s class is this year’s Steeplechase Finals course from Saturday night.
New this year is the option to pay by electronic check and bank wire along with credit card payment and old-faithful hand-written check.
The USDAA staff looks forward to seeing our friends in Louis-ville!
Jumpin’ Juniors and USDAA!Reports have been coming in from around the country proving how versatile and committed our kids can be to the sport of dog agility. They are training their own dogs, partnering at trials with borrowed dogs, volunteering, raising funds for great causes and persevering through challenges to achieve goals, but most of all, they are hav-ing fun!
