THE DISCIPLINE OF FASTING
During Lent, we join the Church throughout the world in
1. abstaining from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of
Lent (at least from age fourteen).
2. We have one full meal (we fast) on the two central days of
penance during Lent: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (at
least from age fourteen until age fifty-nine).
Everyone is encouraged to participate in these disciplines, even
those who do not fall in the age categories. Those with medical
conditions, of course, are not bound by the Church’s obligation of
fast and abstinence. Those with a serious reason are also
excused from the obligation.

THE HOLY SEASON OF LENT
2017
FOR FORTY DAYS WE PREPARE TO CELEBRATE THE
PASCHAL MYSTERY,
THE DYING AND RISING OF CHRIST.
Some Lent opportunities at our parish:
Sunday Mass: The Eucharist in the center of our parish and our lives, and
gives us the strength each week to live the challenges which face us.
Daily Mass (8:30 a.m.). The readings at daily mass invite us to focus on the
reality of dying and rising in our daily lives. Why not come a few minutes
earlier for quiet prayer?
Stations of the Cross (Fridays, 9:00 a.m.)
Confession (Saturdays at 4:00 and during Holy Week)
Ecumenical Services (see list at the bottom of the next page)
Abstaining from meat: On all the Fridays of Lent we join our whole Church
by this simple penitential practice.
Almsgiving: We make an extra effort to be generous to the poor, perhaps
through Outreach and other charities.
The Sacred Triduum: These three days are the most sacred of our Church
Year. Holy Thursday, Mass of the Lord’s Supper (8:00 p.m.). Good Friday,
Service of the Lord’s Passion (3:00 p.m.) and the Solemn Easter Vigil (8:00
p.m. Holy Saturday).
The North Shore Chamber Choir presents "The Passion and the Messiah", a
Lenten reflection featuring sacred music and scripture. Selections include
portions of the Easter Section of Handel's Messiah. Sunday, March 26th,
4:00 p.m. in church- Free will donation.

Looking Forward to Holy Week
Palm Sunday
Palms are distributed at all the masses, and blessed at the beginning of
mass after the reading of Matthew’s gospel of the Entrance into
Jerusalem. This year the Passion of St. Matthew will be read as we
enter into this Holy Week and the Dying and Rising of Jesus.
The 11:15 mass will begin in the Downstairs Hall, and all are invited to
be part of the Solemn Procession with palms into church. We will be
joined by the Children’s Choir and the Adult Choir, and we hope that as
many families as possible will be part of this Palm Sunday Liturgy.
Holy Thursday
The Mass of the Lord’s Supper is our joyful annual celebration of the
gift of the Holy Eucharist. The very heart of our parish family is the
Eucharist, and all are invited to be part of this liturgy. Twelve members
of our parish have been selected to be part of the “Mandatum,” the
Washing of the Feet. Our pastor, Father Frank, after the homily, will
approach each of these persons and wash the feet. “Go and do
likewise!” commands Jesus! (Mass is at 8:00 p.m.)
Good Friday, Service of the Lord’s Passion 3:00 p.m.
Solemn Easter Vigil, Holy Saturday, 8:00 p.m.

St. Isidore School Registration: It is extremely important that you get regis-
tered at St. Isidore's as soon as possible so that your child will get textbooks
before school begins. There are a few steps that you have to follow if you get
registered in March (Mrs. Fitzgerald can explain when you register). This in-
cludes re-registering in your own school district. If you wait too long after we
send in our textbook requests, you will have to complete the entire process on
your own—our school cannot help you. Also, if your child is eligible for trans-
portation, you must go to your own school district and complete the transporta-
tion form no later than March 31st.
