Everyone is invited to par cipate in the Sabba cal Food Drive. Pastor Larry’s Sabba cal and pilgrimage includes not shaving while he is gone. He has challenged us to raise 3 tons of food and will shave upon his return if we meet the goal. We will be collec ng items for the Youth Hope Food Pantry located at 12th Avenue and 41st Street , Moline. This is one of the pantries supported by Churches United. By August 16th, we hope to accumulate 6,000 pounds of non-perishable foods – canned goods, rice, dried beans, etc. and paper products.
We need 500 pounds a week to meet our goal before Pastor Larry’s return! Monetary dona ons will also count, and are a great way to help make our goal. A $1.00 dona on equals 6 pounds of food, $5 equals 30 pounds of food. Checks may be made to TLC Hunger Team with “Sabba cal Food Drive” in the memo line. For anyone looking to help in other ways, we are reques ng help transpor ng the dona ons to the Food Pantry. Please contact Theresa Sco at [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering. Watch Pastor Larry’s beard grow as we track our progress on the poster outside his office.

The Trinity Visitor
VOL. 65 | ISSUE 7 | page 2
Summer is here! And with summer comes vacations. We hope to make visitors to Trinity feel welcome.
You, as a fellow member of Trinity, have an important role in this ministry. A smile, a few words of welcome, an offer to coffee after service (if available), or a willingness to answer a question can make all the difference. This pamphlet is meant to inform you about our method and to help you be a part of this important ministry.
Here is our method and how you can help:
For a guest’s first visit: Invite our guest to leave contact information on a yellow card or in some other way. The goal is to have a way for us to contact our guest in the following week. If they wish not to, do not push them to do so. If at the 9am service, you can invite our visitor to coffee downstairs after the service, or mention that the Pastor(s) would be happy to greet our visitor.
If you find that the person you greeted is a member of Trinity, take it as opportunity to get to know them. It is no crime not to personally know all of Trinity’s over 1,000 members.
Mention the gift bags by the sanctuary entrances and that our guest is welcome to take one along with them. The bags have a small gift along with information about Trinity. Allow them to decide whether or not they wish to take a gift bag. If you wish to invite someone to Trinity as your guest, please feel
free to take a gift bag along with you to give to that person.
In the following week, if we have contact information, our office will forward that information to Trinity’s Team 1330, who will then write or email a note to our guest. Such a note will vary, depending on the guest.
For a guest’s second or
following visit: Invite our guest to leave contact information on a yellow card or in some other way if they have not done so. The goal is to have a way for us to contact our guest in the following week. Again, if they wish not to, do not push them to do so. If at the 9am service, you can invite our visitor to coffee downstairs after the service, or mention that the Pastor(s) would be happy to greet our visitor.
In the following week, if we have contact information, a pastor will contact the person and welcome them to meet or to answer any questions they may have about Trinity.
Our Trinity staff will then place the person on our prospect list, and will start sending information on Trinity events to them for the next 2 months. This will include the Visitor and Friday Notes, depending on what contact information we have.
Please note that our goal is to be positive, to welcome, and to allow our guest “space” as well. Thinking about how you would want to be welcomed can help a lot in how to approach this ministry

ELCA Youth Gathering
July 15-19, 2015 Detroit, Michigan.
#RiseUPELCA.
www.ELCA.rg/gathering
Facebook.com/youthgathering
The ELCA Youth Gathering for high school-age youth takes place every three years and is about faith formation, worship, study, fellowship, service and play.
It is an opportunity for youth to engage with peers from across the United States and the world who share a common commitment and faith in Christ.
The Gathering is a five-day event that begins on a Wednesday evening and ends with a service of communion the following Sunday morning. The opening night sets the stage for the days ahead in which young people may have an encounter with Jesus that energizes their faith and helps them discover their call to serve in the world — locally and globally.
On the days between Wednesday and Sunday, young people rotate through a variety of service learning experiences in the surrounding community. They explore and strengthen their faith by studying God’s word, serving their neighbor, sharing bread and wine in worship, participating in lively faith discussions and broadening their experience of God’s world and diverse communities through travel.

Have You Tried This? Spiritual Tips for Ordinary Days
An anthropologist proposed a game to the kids in an African tribe. He put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the kids that whoever got there first won the sweet fruits. When he told them to run they all took each other’s hands and ran together,
then sat together enjoying their treats. When he asked them why they had run like that, as one could have all the fruits for himself, they said, “UBUNTU, how can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?”

Birdies for Charity is a program that could enhance your gift/pledge to Trinity Lutheran Church.
When you make a charitable gift to Trinity through Birdies for Charity, their fund supplements your gift with a 5-10% bonus. We would urge members to consider fulfilling the last two months of their planned giving to Trinity for 2015 by sending those dollars through Birdies for Charity. Or perhaps you would like make an additional supplemental gift beyond your regular pledge.
If you would like to learn more about this program or to receive an official pledge form contact the church office. Pledge forms must be received at the tournament office by July 10, 2015. Trinity’s Birdie # is 1328.

A Community Called Taize: A Story of Prayer, Worship and Reconciliation by Jason Brian Santos
Call number: 271.8 San
A few Sundays ago I learned the meanings of new words and symbols used in worship preparation by Gretchen Reagan and members of the banner team. I learned also how they work together trying ideas, sketches, fabrics, using old and new, each person having a job to ultimately help the congregation understand a part of scripture and worship. Not that the banner team are Taize, but there are similarities.
In this book I learned how the brothers use prayers/chants and silence, working together with those who come to Taize to come to a fuller meaning of the Word through peace and reconciliation.
Brother Roger came to Taize, France in 1940. He wanted to live the gospel, bought a house, and began ministering to the poor. Soon he was growing vegetables to feed war refugees and victims – Jews, Protestants, Catholics. All
were cared for equally. Other men came to help, and his sister moved nearby to care for orphans. Brothers are non-denominational, pray three times daily, study scripture, and have communal jobs. The group has grown and changed by meeting needs of those who come as pilgrims, visitors. Some brothers move outside Taize to live among and care for the poor.
The chants, which is how I think of Taize, were always a part of worship but were composed in the 1970’s with ease of use by participants in mind. Over time, many have come seeking the peace and pattern of simple life in reconciled community. These have included Desmond Tutu as well as 100,000 young people each year. After evening prayers one night a young Indian man, Paul Joseph, Brother Roger and several others remained with the lingering young people for prayer vigil and began singing “Ubi Caritas” together, continuing for twenty minutes. Using a simple rhythm, directed toward God, based in Scripture, the brothers worked with composer and musician Jacques Berthier to have the music highlight important parts of each prayer.
As with all parts of the Taize buildings, grounds, worship, participants and chants adaptations
occur to make sure all are included because so many pilgrims continue to come. The final chapter is “Importing Taize – Let our servant now go in peace, O Lord, now go in peace according to your word.” This is followed by appendixes that tell how to get to Taize and how to lead groups there, the vows that are taken by the brothers, other resources, and a glossary. The last paragraph before this final chapters sums up my thoughts and reads:
“For the first nine chapters of this book, I have pored over the endless detai ls of the community’s life and liturgy. In the final chapter I offer my thoughts on how you can use the chants with respectful regard to Taize. But I hope you’ve been able to catch a glimpse of a humble group of men who’ve changed the history of the world in a very profound way – not from their chants, but through their obedience to Christ’s call to be reconcilers for God.”
The TLC Book Club meets June 16th at 12:00 noon in the Lounge to

meets June 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in the Lounge. Join any of the
discussion groups. We enjoy welcoming new members!

review of anything from our church’s library, including videos, is
welcome. Reviews from the children’s and youth sections are also
welcome.
