ABSTRACT

TESALONIKA, TORES. The Types and Purposes of Swear Words in Good Will

Hunting Movie. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters,

Sanata Dharma University, 2017.

Language is an important medium to communicate something to others, but

there are some words we should and should not say in daily conversations. Those

words which should not be said in daily conversation are called taboo words.

Nowadays, the reality is that taboo words can be found and heard easily. We can

find taboo words people use to swear in the daily life. Although taboo words are

used to swear, it does not mean that all taboo words are swear words, because taboo

words used to swear cannot retain the literal meaning in taboo word.

The study aims to analyze the uses of swear words which are used in Good

Will Hunting. Good Will Hunting is chosen because it provides social stratification,

so it will reflect human being’s life. Moreover, the most important is that it has

many swearwords, so it will be more varied to analyze. Therefore, the objectives of

the study are to identify the types of the uses of swear words and to find out the

purposes of swear word which are expressed in Good Will Hunting.

This study is a library research, because the topic is too broad and needs to

be narrowed. The research takes purposive random sampling as a sampling method.

Sample data will be taken randomly from each type of swear word by considering

the number of swear words of each type of swear word to find out the characteristics

of data. It also applies descriptive research method in analyzing the data to answer

the question why and how phenomena happen by explaining the situation.

Pragmatic approach is used to find out the speaker’s meaning so that the reasons

why people swear in the context are understandable.

Based on the analysis about types of swear words, Good Will Hunting has 6

of 7 types found. There are copulative term, excretory term, religious matter, body

function term, animal term, and mother in law. Related to the purposes of the use

of swear words, there are 4 of 5 purposes of swearing found in Good Will Hunting.

They are insulting people, provoking people, emphasizing certain things, and

showing casualness. Based on the research result, copulative term can be used in

insulting, provoking, emphasizing, and showing casualness. Excrematory term and

body function are to insult, emphasize, and show casualness. Animal term and

mother in law are to show casualness. Religious matter is to emphasize and show

casualness.

Bahasa merupakan media untuk berkomunikasi dengan sesama, namun

terdapat beberapa kata yang bisa dan tidak bisa kita ucapkan dalam percakapan

sehari-hari. Kata yang tidak seharusnya diucapkan tersebut adalah kata tabu.

kenyataannya, kata tabu ini justru dapat kita dengar dan temukan dengan mudah

sekarang ini. Kita dapat menjumpai kata tabu untuk mengumpat dikehidupan

sehari-hari. Walaupun kata tabu digunakan untuk mengumpat, namun bukan berarti

bahwa semua kata tabu merupakan kata umpatan karena kata tabu yang digunakan

untuk mengumpat tidak mempertahankan makna harafiah pada kata tabu tersebut.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis penggunaan kata umpatan yang

digunakan dalam film Good Will Hunting. Good Will Hunting dipilih karena

memiliki stratifikasi sosial sehingga film tersebut dapat merefleksikan kehidupan

manusia. Oleh karena itu, tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-

jenis penggunaan kata umpatan dan mencari tahu tujuan penggunaan kata umpatan

yang diutarakan dalam Good Will Hunting.

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kepustakaan karena topik terlalu besar dan

butuh untuk dipersempit. Penelitian ini menggunakan teknik pengambilan sampel

secara acak dan sengaja sebagai metode pengambilan sampel. Itu berarti data

sampel akan dipilih secara acak dari setiap jenis kata umpatan dengan

mempertimbangkan jumlah setiap kata umpatan dari masing-masing jenis kata

umpatan untuk mengetahui karakteristik data. Penelitian ini juga mengaplikasikan

teknik penelitian deskriptif dalam menganalisis data untuk menjawab pertanyaan

tentang apa dan bagaimana fenomena terjadi dengan menjelaskan situasi.

Pendekatan pragmatik digunakan untuk menemukan maksud pembicara supaya

alasan mengapa orang-orang mengumpat dalam konteks dapat dimengerti.

Berdasarkan analisis mengenai jenis kata umpatan, Good Will Hunting

menggunakan 6 dari 7 jenis kata umpatan yang ditemukan yaitu istilah aktivitas

seksual, istilah ekskresi, masalah keagamaan, istilah fungsi tubuh, istilah hewan,

dan istilah mother in law. Berdasarkan tujuan penggunaan kata umpatan, ada 4 dari

5 fungsi penggunaan kata umpatan yang ditemukan yaitu untuk menghina,

memprovokasi, menekankan hal tertentu, dan menunjukan keadaan informal.

Berdasarkan hasil penelitian istilah seksual digunakan untuk menghina,

memprovokasi, menekankan dan menunjukkan keadaan yang informal. Istilah

ekskresi dan fungsi tubuh untuk menghina, menekankan dan menunjukkan keadaan

yang informal. Istilah hewan dan mother in law untuk menunjukkan keadaan yang

informal. Masalah keagamaan untuk menekankan sesuatu dan menunjukkan

keadaan yang informal.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Language is an important medium to communicate something to others.

Human being can establish conversations through language, in order that the

communication runs smoothly. In the daily conversation, human beings need to

communicate using language, but not all words we can say. There are some words

we should and should not say in daily conversations. Those words called taboo

words.

According to Hughes, taboo means sacred or untouchable which is taken

from Tongan (2006: 462). Because of that, the uses of taboo words are prohibited

for general. Every culture has something which is sacred or humbled, but then those

words are always associated with impolite and inappropriate language in the

society, for example is like a taboo word which is related to sex. That is also

supported by Allan and Burridge (2006: 2-3) who state that taboo words are

prohibited to say because it can make the value of a particular culture ruined. The

concept of taboo in different culture is different, but they have same concept that

taboo words are prohibited to say because it is impolite. Moreover, it will oppose

manners and politeness in society.

Nowadays, taboo words can be found and heard easily. We can find taboo

words are used to swear in the daily life. Although taboo words are used to swear,

it does not mean that all taboo words are swear words. According to Karjalainen,

swear words are a part of taboo words, but not all taboo words are considered as

swear words (2002: 18). However, when taboo words are used for swearing, swear

word cannot be interpreted literally. It is because swear words are used in an

emotive sense to express attitudes and emotion (Anderson and Trudgill, 1992: 53).

Each swear word represents more than the literal meaning they can convey (Pinker,

2007:12)

Swear words are the commonest way to express or show strong emotions

since swear words can represent them, especially for angry and frustrated feeling.

Because of that, those taboo words cannot be interpreted literally when those are

used for swearing. Besides, swear words are not only to express a negative kind,

but also a positive kind, to express amazement and to show closeness for examples.

Everyone is getting familiar with swear words not only in the daily life, but

also in the communication media such as movies, songs, poems, and newspapers,

etc. But then, this present undergraduate thesis will focus and analyze one of the

movies in accordance with the use of swear words. Movie is chosen because it

reflects human being’s life. One of the movies is Good Will Hunting.

Good Will Hunting is a 1997 American movie by Matt Damon and Ben

Affleck. This movie talks about Will Hunting's life. Will Hunting is a janitor at

M.I.T (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), but a prodigy in mathematics. Will

who is a violence victim in his childhood, and then he has troubles with the law

because of his past. Because of his behavior, he has to enter into the jail. Professor

Lambeau offers a help so that he can go out of jail if he wants agree his ask to get

counseling from a therapist. It is done so that he can find direction in his life.

Good Will Hunting movie is chosen because there are many swear words a

researcher can find out during a process of delivering the message or idea in the

conversation. Because of that, the data are more varied here. This varied data would

be profitable because the analysis also would be varied. This varied analysis would

enrich readers' comprehension later related to the topic a researcher has. The varied

types of swear words encourage the researcher to find out the reasons why swear

words are used in the movie.

Researcher is interested to analyze swearing expression in Good Will

Hunting movie because people in the movie use those expressions quite a lot.

Because those expressions are used very intensively, so the occurence is very high.

Because of the high occurences, a researcher wants to observe the meaning and the

function in the conversation.

Since swear words cannot be interpreted literally, pragmatic approach will

be used here. It makes the researcher easy to understand a context, so that the

researcher will know why swear words are used in this movie. Pragmatics would

help a researcher to find out the speaker’s meaning so that a researcher could

understand why swear words are used here.

According to Yule, to understand the reason swear words are chosen in the

contexts, the roles of pragmatics are needed in this case because pragmatics is the

study of the meaning based on the context (1996: 3). Meaning to say, a speaker's

intention should be understood so that a hearer or reader could catch a speaker's

intention. This is not easy to understand what a speaker or a writer means because

the fact that we do not always know what they think or what their perspective about

something makes us misunderstand. Because of that, pragmatics would help a

researcher to look for the hidden meaning so that a researcher could follow a

speaker's intention in the conversation. Finding out the reasons swear words are

used, this pragmatic approach will be appropriately used so that the uses of swear

words are understandable.

B. Problem Formulation

The problems are formulated as follows:

1. What types are the swear words expressed in Good Will Hunting?

2. What purposes are the swear words expressed in the movie Good Will Hunting?

C. Objectives of the Study

Objectives are the way for the researcher to focus on the problems a

researcher arranges and wants to be answered. Based on the problem formulations,

the first objective of the study is to identify the types of swear words. The varied

swear words which are uttered by the actors and actresses in Good Will Hunting

movie provide different types of swear words based on a particular theory a

researcher applies.

Besides, a researcher also tries to find out the purpose the use of swear

words in Good Will Hunting through the functions of swear words. Thus, the

researcher will determine the purpose of use of swear words by providing the

context in Good Will Hunting.

D. Definition of Term

In order to avoid the confusion of words which are used to express what the

researcher is talking about based on the ideas the researcher wants to convey to the

readers, the researcher wants to give the definition of the following words based on

my focus in my thesis paper.

Taboo Words. According to Hughes, it refers to something avoided to say

in the general use because it will be hardly received by the society (2006: 462).

Swear words. Swear words are a part of taboo words, but not all taboo

words are swear words (Karjalainen, 2002: 18). Anderson and Trudgill (1992: 53)

state that swear word has three criteria: it contains taboo word, it does not retain a

literal meaning, and it is emotive language.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

A. Review of Related Studies

The study about swear word is not a new study here. Some studies that are

related to this present undergraduate thesis need to mention here. It reviews the

relation and the differences between the present undergraduate thesis and the both

undergraduate theses. All of the reviews of related studies below are taken from

the undergraduate theses:

1. A research by Adityo Prawinanto “A Sociolinguistic Analysis of the Swear

Words in the Antologi Rasa Novel written by Ika Natassa."

In his writing, Prawinanto tries to give the deeper understanding to the non-

native English speakers and also English learners through The Antologi Rasa Novel

about the use of swear words that are appropriate based on the aim and the reason

why the main characters in this novel do swearing. He hopes that the non-native

speakers and also English learners would understand how the way to use swear

words based on the proper time and place. In his writing, he classifies some parts

of words that are English swear words. Thus, he classifies those English swear

words into their types and aims based on the Montagu's theory in Karjalainen for

the aims and Anderson and Trudgil's theory for the types of swear words.

The similarities between Prawinanto's thesis and the present undergraduate

thesis are located in the object, swear words. Moreover, the ways Prawinanto

analyzes the data are also the same with this present undergraduate thesis. He

classifies some parts of words that are English swear words in the Antologi Rasa

novel first. After that, he determines the types and the aims or motives based on

the theories.

The differences between Prawinanto's thesis and this present undergraduate

thesis are the objects of analysis. This present researcher analyzes an American

movie, Good Will Hunting, while Prawinanto analyzes a novel, Antologi Rasa.

Moreover, related to swear words, Prawinanto used sociolinguistic approach to

analyze the swear words. Meanwhile, the researcher uses pragmatic approach to

analyze the use of swear words. The last, we use difference theories. Prawinanto

uses the Montagu's theory in Karjalainen for the aims and Anderson and Trudgil's

theory for the types of swear words, while a researcher uses Wardhaugh’s theory

in Halimah to classify types of swear words and Pinker’s theory to determine the

purpose of the use of swear words.

2. Maria Gishella Ajeng Puspitasari “The Analysis of Swear Words in Bad

Boys II Movie by Michael Bay.”

In her writing, Puspitasari analyzes swear words which are uttered by Mike

Lawrey as a main character. Since swear words can be used to express speaker’s

mind and feeling, her research has a purpose to observe how Mike Lawrey uses

swear words in this movie. To observe the use of swear words which are expressed

by Mike Lawrey, she tries to look for and then determine types and purposes of

swear words. She uses Jay’s theory to classify taboo words. Meanwhile, she uses

Pinker’s theory to analyze how people use swear words.

The similarities between this present undergraduate thesis and Puspitasari’s

thesis are we use the same approach to solve the problem formulations, pragmatics.

Besides, object we analyze is same. That is the conversations through the script in

the movie. We also analyze about the use of swear words. It is meant so that the

readers will get knowledge about how to use swear words in the daily activities

through types and function of swear words. Not only that, the ways we analyze

swear words are same. The sequences to solve the problem formulations begin with

determination types and then purposes of swear words. Lastly, we use the same

theory to determine the purpose of the use of swear words.

The differences between this present undergraduate thesis and Puspitasari’s

thesis are the title of movie. This present undergraduate thesis chooses Good Will

Hunting as an object, while Puspitasari’s thesis is Bad Boys II Movie by Michael

Bay. Besides, this present thesis analyzes the use of swear word by all of actors

and actresses in a movie, but Puspitasari’s thesis only analyzes swear words which

are expressed by Mike Lawrey as a main character in that movie. We use difference

theory to analyze types of swear words. The present thesis uses Wardhaugh’s

theory, while Puspitasari’s uses Jay’s theory.

The next, in this present undergraduate thesis, a researcher would try to

develop the study about swear words topic in Good Will Hunting movie. This

present undergraduate thesis analyzes swearwords by all actors and actresses. Since

the role they play have different backgrounds and interests by using swear words,

so the discussions will be various. Besides, this present undergraduate thesis also

tries to see the context to understand the use of swearwords, it makes the readers

easier to follow the story. But, in the end, these both undergraduate theses really

help the present researcher to know the way theories are applied.

B. Review of Related Theories

Some theories related to my topic are needed here to answer my problem

formulations the researcher mentioned previously in the first chapter. Since these

theories below would help the researcher, it would be discussed here.

1. Pragmatics

Making the readers understand easily, the theory a researcher uses to

resolve the problem formulations researcher has mentioned before, the researcher

provides pragmatics theory by Leech. It is to help readers understand how to

analyze the data. According to Leech (1983:6), pragmatics is as the study related

to the meaning of what speakers want to say based on the context. Meaning to say

that this theory will look for the speaker’s intention based on the situation happen.

This theory will find out what the speakers are talking about and what the purposes

of the conversation are.

According to Yule (1996:3), pragmatics is a speaker meaning study. The

meaning that is communicated by speakers and interpreted by hearers. The analysis

is about what speakers mean by the utterances they say. Pragmatics is a contextual

meaning study. The analysis is about the relation between what speakers mean by

their utterances in the certain context and how the context can influence what the

speakers say. Pragmatics is a study of how to get more information than is said.

The listeners can have assumptions from the utterances the speakers say. Meaning

to say, this study explores the possible meanings from what is unsaid by their

utterances that are communicated.

2. Taboo Words

a. Definition

Gu and Lu (2002: 264) state that taboo comes from Tongan and means

"holly" or "untouchable" that is still exist in the cultures. Something which is sacred

or humbled will be prohibited to touch and even to talk about. It tends to act, object

or relationship that is avoided by the society. Because those are even forbidden to

talk about, people learn what word "should" and "should not" say in the society

based on the norms in their place later on. Akmajian (2004: 303) emphasizes that

taboo words should be prevented or even not be applied completely in different

place or polite condition. It is done so that there is no misunderstanding among

people who have different culture and value about the certain words which are

considered as taboo words. Moreover, taboo words will oppose to social value. It

can cause embarrassment and also offensiveness.

b. Classification

According to Wardhaugh (1992: 236), the classifications of taboo words

come from:

(i) Copulative Term

It comes from "couple" term which means that it is a combination of two

people from different genders who are married. Then, it becomes copulative which

means something related to sexual intercourse included anal or oral intercourse

between two different genders (sexual activities) such as fuck.

(ii) Excretory Term

It comes from "excrete" which means to separate and eliminate the solid

waste matter through the anus. It means that something that comes out of human

body (human being’s excretion) such as shit.

(iii) Body Function Term

It is about sex organ of human being for the next generation in the

production system (human being’s genital) such as ass.

(iv) Sexual Irregularities

This is related to a temporary sex partner. Women usually become the

object of this term such as whore.

(v) Animal Term

This is related to the animals, the behavior of animals and religious belief

about some animals that are assumed that they are close to God in the prehistoric

times such as bitch.

(vi) Mother in Law

This is related to a woman who has affair with some partners. She has

sexual intercourse, but she likes to change the partners to do sexual activity such

as motherfucker.

(vii) Religious Matter

This is related to something religious or God such as ghost.

3. Swear Words

a. Definition

Swear words are taboo words (Moore, 2012: 3). This is also according to

Jay and Anschewitz who quote the theory of swearing by Jay, mentions that (2008:

268) swearing uses taboo language to express the speaker's emotional feeling and

communicate it to the hearers.

Swear words are a part of taboo words, but not all taboo words are

considered as swear words (Karjalainen 2002: 18), for example, excrement is taboo

word, but excrement is not swear word. Meanwhile, shit is included both taboo

word and swear word (Pinker, 2007: 357). According to Pinker, the reason why

they are different because excrement has a connotation which is more unpleasant

than shit in which excrement is filth’s description and shit can be used as an idiom

and casual context.

According to Anderson and Trudgill (1992: 53), swear words have three

criteria, they are:

i. Swear words contain taboo words.

Taboo words are generally related to sex and excrement, for example. That

is because sex is considered as something vulgar and embarrassing in the society.

ii. Swearing do not retain a literal meaning.

When taboo word retain their literal meaning for swearing, it cannot be said

as swearing. When taboo words are used to swear, taboo words cannot be

interpreted literally. The literal meaning must be lost.

iii. Swearing is emotive language.

The main function of swearing is to express speaker’s feeling and/or

attitude.

b. Functions

According to Pinker (2007:19), swear words have five functions as follows:

i. To insult people

This swearword function also can be said as abusive swearing because the

function of abusive swearing is to insult someone. People use taboo words to insult

someone else that will be directed to someone else. It is done to make someone

affected emotionally, for example, you motherfucking son of bitch!

ii. To respond something bad spontaneously

This swear word function can be said as cathartic swearing, because the

function of cathartic swearing is to respond something bad spontaneously. People

use it to give emotional response because there is something bad happens to them

suddenly. Cathartic swearing occurs to express anger, surprise, and pain which are

not directed to anyone, for instance, when someone hits their own thumb with

hammer, they will yell “fuck!” or “damn!” spontaneously. This is different with

abusive swearing which is derived to someone else to express their emotional need.

Cathartic swearing is not directed to someone else.

iii. To provoke people

It is also called dysphemitic. It is different with euphemism. Euphemism is

used to express something tabooed in an acceptable way socially, but dysphemitic

swearing is used to express something ordinary where an unacceptable word in

social is used to give intensity. Because of that, the uses of taboo words force

listeners to think negative and provocative. This swearing is usually used when

people talk about another who is not present during conversation. In euphemism,

people will replace the use of taboo such as sex term. They will tend to replace

“have sex” to “make love and sleep together” so that it sounds better in an

acceptable way socially. People will replace something mundane such as “he left

her” to “he fucks her” in dysphemitic.

iv. To emphasize certain things

It is also said as emphatic swearing. People use taboo words to emphasize

something. It is meant to express the stronger feeling, for example, you are fucking

amazing! Fucking is to emphasize the amazement about something or someone.

v. To show casualness

People use taboo words in a casual situation. They swear without really

thinking the literal meaning of it. It shows the closeness with others. Moreover, it

is to show that the situation is informal, for example, someone says “what’s up,

motherfucker?” to their friend, but they will never mean the literal meaning of

taboo word itself.

C. Theoretical Framework

Taboo words theory is needed to help researcher to solve the first problem

formulation about type of swear words. This theory will help researcher later to

differ taboo words and the next theory about swear words. Because as we know

that swear words are also taboo words, although not all taboo words are swear

words. When selecting taboo words data which contain swear words, this theory

will be applied.

After selecting taboo words, swear words theory will also contribute to

solve the first problem formulation about type of swear words. Swear word theory

about criteria of swear words will help researcher to identify whether taboo words

are used to swear or not in the conversation in Good Will Hunting. The way a

researcher applies this theory when a researcher get the conversations data which

contain taboo words, then this theory will be applied to find conversation which is

using swear words.

After that, the theory of types of swear words will be used here. This theory

will be used to solve the first problem formulation. This theory will contribute to

differ the use of swear words into every type. Here, a researcher begins to classify

or determine every swear word datum. The use of swear words will be differed

from one type to another type through this theory. After having swear words data,

this theory about type of swear words will be applied.

To solve the second problem formulation, the theory about swear word

functions will be used here. This theory will be helpful to answer the second

problem formulation related to the purpose of swear words. This theory will

contribute to find out why the speakers employ the use of swear words in the

conversations. What reason the speakers want to convey through the use of swear

words and why the speakers choose to use swear word to respond or transfer

something in the mind. By this theory, the second problem formulation can be

answered. After knowing the types, a researcher will apply this theory about the

swear words function into the conversations data.

Lastly, pragmatics theory would help a researcher to answer the second

problem formulation. Before determining the functions of swear words, the

researcher will apply this theory about pragmatics theory to understand the context.

It is useful to help researcher to determine the purpose why swear words are chosen

in the conversation in Good Will Hunting. The researcher has to learn the context

in the conversation before the researcher can determine and explain the purpose

the use of swear word itself.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

A. Object of the Study

Data were in the form of utterances that are conveyed in the movie. The

utterances among speakers that were words, clauses, sentences, sentences in the

conversation containing the use of swear words in a 1997 American movie, Good

Will Hunting. To understand the context, there would be dialog in the data. The

data were taken from Good Will Hunting movie by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

B. Approach of the Study

In order to analyze the two questions in the previous chapter the researcher

has arranged about types of swear words and purposes of the use of swear words

in the conversation, the researcher uses pragmatic approach. Pragmatics has many

definitions related to what people want to explore in the conversation. There are

four definitions. First, pragmatics is contextual meaning study. Meaning to say,

this study related to the interpretation of what people mean based on a particular

context and how the context influences what is said by the speakers. Second, this

study is about implied meaning. Meaning to say, this study explores how a great

deal of what is unsaid is recognized as part of what is communicated. Third,

pragmatics is the expression of relative distance study. This perspective raises the

question of what determines the choice between the said and unsaid. On the

assumption of how close or distant the hearer is, speakers determine how much

need to be said. Last, pragmatics is the study of speaker meaning (Yule, 1996:3-4).

The definition of pragmatics as the study of the meaning of what speaker

means to be is the most appropriate one to explore the topic in the present

undergraduate thesis. It is related to the object research here about the use of swear

words in the conversation between the speakers and listeners in a 1997 American

movie, Good Will Hunting. It is because in pragmatics, this approach would

explore deeper about what the speaker’s mean is by providing swear words. The

context will be explored deeply to understand speaker’s intention of the use of

swear words.

Since my undergraduate thesis tries to analyze deeper the purposes why the

speakers in Good Will Hunting choose to use swear words, this pragmatic approach

is used. To understand the speakers' intention so that the purposes the speakers use

swear words could be determined through this pragmatic approach. Besides, the

next, this approach could identify the conversation whether the speakers use taboo

words for swearing or not.

Here, pragmatic approach works in meaning aspect which is not included

in semantic theory. It will discuss about all aspect of utterances meaning which

cannot be explained by literal meaning of each word. It can be said that this is a

medium to find out the reason why people say that utterances. In pragmatic

approach, this study learns the relation of utterances and the context. This study

learn the use of language which is determined by the context. Pragmatic approach

will try to explain that there is a situation when human being tries to make language

able to serve them practically and flexibly. It means that language can represent

human being’s mind.

C.Method of the Study

1. Data Collection

The data population is 251 data. Because of such large data, the thesis

applied purposive random sampling method to select samples. Based on Krejcie

and Morgan Table (1970:607-610), the minimum sample for research is 10% of

the population. Although the more the data, the more valid the research is. The

need for an afficient method of determining the sample size is needed to represent

the population below:

The method was first to classify the number of swearwords occurences in

population into 7 categories. 10% swear words occurences are taken from each

category of swear words randomly. Although it was randomly, but the 10% data is

taken purposively. It is because 10% of population taken data has almost all

categories of swearwords in Wardhaugh’s theory (1992:236). The next, 10% taken

data is used to find out purposes each category of swearwords can express.

For a sample study, the data must be suitable for the topic researcher has.

Collecting the data, firstly, researcher downloaded Good Will Hunting and English

subtitle. Secondly, researcher checked whether the subtitle matches with the

utterances in the movie. Thirdly, researcher selected the conversations which are

containing taboo words. And then, the researcher decided taboo words which are

considered as swear word. After that, the researcher selected the conversations data

which contain swear words and can represent all the data randomly. Thus, a

researcher classified those conversations that are performing the use of swear

words based on the types of swear words and then determine the purpose of swear

words. Lastly, the data were transferred to the data sheet that was made.

2. Data Analysis

This present undergraduate thesis applies a qualitative descriptive research

method in analyzing data. Bogdan and Biklen (1992: 30) states qualitative research

is descriptive. The research data contain words or picture rather than number. The

result of the data analysis is an explanation about situation which is analyzed and

provided in the form of narrative to answer the question why and how phenomena

happen. The data are interpreted and explained in accordance to the condition

between the relation of the data and phenomena.

There are some steps for finding the answer of two problem formulations.

To answer the first problem formulation about the types of swear words in the

conversation, researcher differed the conversations which are containing swear

words from the conversation which are taboo words. A researcher would apply

theory of swear word’s criteria by Anderson and Trudgill to differ swear word and

taboo words. After finding the conversations which contain swear words, a

researcher classified the use of swear words based on the theory of swear word’s

types by Wardhaugh. Based on Wardhaugh’s theory, there are seven types of swear

words. There are copulative term (C), excretory term (E), body function term (B),

sexual irregularities (S), animal term (A), mother in law (M) and religious matter

(R). The analysis data were transferred to the data sheet that was made bellow:

column is explanation column. In explanation column, context of the conversation

will be input.

Meanwhile, answering the second problem formulation about the purposes

of swear words, a researcher analyzed the use of swear words in the conversation

to find the purposes why the speakers use swear words in Good Will Hunting. A

researcher tried to concern with swearwords in the conversations. A researcher

applied swear words functions theory by Pinker to know the purpose of the use of

swear words in the conversation. Besides, a researcher also applied pragmatics

theory to see the implied meaning in the use of swear words based on the certain

situation in the conversation. After that, a researcher could determine the purposes

of swear words are used through the functions of swear words itself. According to

Pinker’s theory about functions of swear words, there are five functions. They are

to insulting people (I), to responding something bad spontaneosly (R), to provoke

people (P), to emphasize certain things (E) and to show casualness (C). The

analysis data were transferred to the data sheet that was made bellow:

CHAPTER IV

ANALYSIS RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

This chapter consists of two subchapters based on the number of problem

formulations which is arranged. The first subchapter deals with the discussion of

the data to answer the first problem formulation in the Problem Formulation in

chapter one by finding out the types of swear words in Good Will Hunting movie.

The first problem formulation will apply Wardhaugh’s theory which classifies

swear words into seven types. They are copulative term, excretory term, body

function term, sexual irregularities, animal term, mother in law, and religious

matter.

The second subchapter involves the second problem formulation which is

discussed in Problem Formulation. It is to identify the purpose the use of swear

word data by using Pinker’s theory. There are five functions Pinker provides,

which are to insult people, to respond something bad spontaneously, to provoke

people, to emphasize certain things, and to show casualness.

This analysis begins by presenting the analysis result of research through

column chart. Column chart shows the number of use of swear words in Good Will

Hunting movie. It contains of all of kinds of swear words, which are copulative

term, excretory term, body function term, sexual irregularities, animal term, mother

in law, and religious matter. The number of use of swear words by each type of

swear words is presented as follows:

copulative terms are 16 times used, and sexual irregularity is none. To see more

According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, the meaning of fuck is “having

sex” or “copulate”. That meaning is included into taboo word, which is copulative

term. Although fuck is tabooed, Munier states that fuck is functional taboo word

which is arguable (2010, 138). Because of that, there are many meanings can be

described by fuck. The following data will show the meanings can be interpreted

by word fuck, and also there are many forms of fuck can be found in Good Will

Hunting movie:

WILL : What're we gunna do up there?

CHUCKIE : 'dunno. Fuck up some smart kids.

You'd probably fit right in.…

There is the word fuck in fuck up. Although there is the word fuck in fuck

up, the meaning of fuck up has nothing to do with sexual intercourse. According to

Farlex Dictionary of Idioms, the meaning of fuck up is “to make a mistake”. Based

on the context, the meaning of fuck up has a potential meaning as “to disturb”. In

the context, Chuckie gives an idea “to disturb” some smart kids in Casey’s new bar

at Harvard by Will’s cleverness because Chuckie assumes that Will’s cleverness is

the only one who is equal to Harvard people. Because of that, the meaning of fuck

up is “to disturb” some smart kids.

MORGAN : Fuck this. Let's get some food.

CHUCKIE : Hey, what, Morgan? You're not gunna talk to her?

MORGAN : Fuck her.

Fuck in fuck this and fuck her does not mean “to have sexual intercourse

with this” and “to have sexual intercourse with her”. According to Longman

Dictionary, fuck which is added by object pronoun such as fuck you/it/them means

“it is used to show that you are very angry at something or someone, or that you do

not care about them at all”. Based on the context, the meaning of fuck this and fuck

her show that Morgan “does not care about this and her”. The potential meaning

of fuck this and fuck her in the context can be “forget this” and “forget her”. In the

context, Morgan talks about the little League game Morgan and his friends watch

and asks about getting some food later on, so he says fuck this to say “forget the

game”, and says fuck her to say “forget the girl” they are talking about.

CHUCKIE : Morgan, we're not goin' to Kelly's just cus' you like the takeout

MORGAN : What the fuck are we gunna do, we can't spare 15 minutes?

According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, the meaning of fuck is “an act

of copulation”, but fuck in what the fuck are we gonna do is not meant as “an act

of copulation” in this context, because Chuckie and Morgan are not talking about

“an act of copulation”. Based on Merriam Webster Dictionary, fuck which uses

especially with the is as meaningless intensive. Fuck in the fuck is meaningless.

The overall meaning of sentence is not affected by that word, but it is responsible

for adding emphasis (Howe, 2012: 29).

The fuck which is meaningless intensive is more appropriately applied in

this context. In this context, the word the fuck Morgan uses to emphasize what he

is saying. Morgan wants to know “what they are really going to do”, so they cannot

spare 15 minutes to go to Kelly.

CLARK : Well, as a matter of fact I won't because Wood drastically

WILL : Wood drastically...Wood drastically underestimates the impact

Fucking in a fucking Education is an adjective. Adjective has a role to

modify a noun. According to Longman Dictionary, the meaning of fucking is “used

to emphasize your opinion of something”. In this context, Will is talking about an

education, so it is used to emphasize his opinion about education. The education

Will is talking about refers to Clark’s knowledge about plagiarism Clark does. It

can be seen through the way Will conveys about Clark’s thinking in fifty years.

Clark’s thinking in fifty years is related to “his plagiarism knowledge which is

shameful, useless and worthless” which is meant as an education here. In the

context, Clark’s thinking in fifty years is that he should not do the plagiarism again.

Secondly, it is useless to waste a lot of money just to get “worthless education” if

all he can do is plagiarism. He does not need waste a lot of money just to plagiarize

works of others which can be found in public library.

SEAN : My father was an alcoholic. Means fuckin' drunk. He'd come

home hammered, lookin' to whale on somebody. So, I had to

provoke him so he wouldn't go after my mother and little brother.

Interesting nights were when he wore his rings.

WILL : Yeah...he used to just put a uh...a wrench, a stick, and a belt on

According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, the meaning of fucking in

fucking drunk is “used as an intensive”. It is appropriately used in this context. Sean

is telling Will about his father who is an alcoholic, then he clarifies his statement

again and says “means fucking drunk”. In the context, fucking drunk is to clarify

his statement about the word an alcoholic, so it has a potential meaning as “really

drunk”. Fucking in fucking drunk is “as intensive of the word drunk”. Sean’s father

is “really drunk (an alcoholic)”, in this context.

WILL : So, you finally got a job, huh Morgan?

MORGAN : Yeah, I had one. Now, I'm fucked again.

Fucked can be an adjective or a passive verb here. According to Longman

Dictionary, the meaning of fucked as an adjective means “completely broken or in

a very bad condition”. Meanwhile, according to Merriam Webster Dictonary, the

meaning of fucked in “I am fucked again” as a verb here can be meant as “I am

dealt with unfairly again”. In this context, the word fucked should be related to the

job. It is because the context is Will and Morgan are talking about Morgan who

finally had a job which is to help Chuckie and Billy make a car for Will’s birthday

present, but now Morgan does not have a job again. Morgan does not have a job

again because the car they make for Will done. Because of that, fucked in I’m

fucked again has a potential meaning as “jobless” for an adjective, and “fired” for

passive verb. “Jobless” and “fired” have the same concept of fucked meaning in

the Dictionary as something bad in Morgan’s life.

WILL : Yeah. Don't worry about me, I know what I'm doin'. Yeah, but

this girl is like, you know, beautiful. She's smart. She's fun. She's

different from most of the girls I've been with.

According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, fucking in fucking boring

means and fucking perfect means as an emphasis. In this context, it is appropriately

used. It has potential meaning as “extremely boring” for fucking boring and

“extremely perfect” for fucking perfect. Based on th context, Will shows his

estimation about Skylar’s character between before and after Will knows Skylar

further which will be opposite.

CHUCKIE : Why didn't you give me none of that nasty little Hoochie

Woochie you usually throw at me?

CATHY : Oh, Fuck you and your Irish curse, Chuckie. Like I'd waste my

energy spreading my legs for that Tootsie Roll dick? So go home

and give it a tug yourself.

According to Longman Dictionary, the meaning of fuck you is “used to

show that you do not care about them at all”. The meaning of fuck you in dictionary

is appropriately used in this context. It has meaning as “don’t care about you or

forget about you”. Based on the context, Chuckie is asking about the reason why

Cathy did not have sex with him as usual. Cathy answers his question by swearing

expression which says that “forget about you” and your Irish curse, because Cathy

thinks that it will waste her energy to have sex with him.

SEAN : Why the wrench?

WILL : cus' Fuck him, that's why.

According to Longman Dictionary, the meaning of Fuck him is “to have

sex with him or not to care about him”, but those meanings are not precise in this

context. Based on the context, Sean and Will are talking about an incident between

Will’s father and Will in the past. Will wants to say the reason why he chooses the

wrench after Sean is asking about it. He wants to say that the wrench is a tool he

uses to kill his father. Based on the context, fuck him has a potential meaning as

“kill him”.

WILL : She woke herself up?

SEAN : Ye e e e sss.… Oh Christ....aahhh, but, Will, she's been dead

two years and that's the shit I remember. Wonderful stuff, you

know, little things like that. Ah, but, those are the things I miss

the most. The little idiosyncrasies that only I knew about. That's

agrees that there is nothing wrong with it because his father also laid brick.

According to Farlex Dictionary of Idioms, the meaning of bust his ass is “to work

hard”. That meaning is interrelated in this context, because Will and Sean are

talking about a job as people who are laying brick. Bust his ass is also meant as

“work hard” in the context, because Sean says that his dad is only laying bricks,

while the price of an education is expensive. Because of expensive education, his

dad has to work hard so that Sean gets education in his school.

Sean applies busted his ass to replace his work hard because he is talking

to Will who is considered not only as a client, but also as a friend in this context.

Although this swearing can be considered as dysphemitic swearing since he is

talking about his dad, but this swear word, ass in busted his ass is a rude slang

which is used to talk to friends, according to Farlex Dictionary of Idioms. This

shows the closeness between Sean and Will.






Sean and Lambeau are talking about Will. Will’s mental problem is

discussed, but what Sean tries to talk is not understood. Because he does not

understand well Sean’s intention, it leads him into the wrong perception. Lambeau

thinks that Sean blames him because Sean’s life which was turning out is

considered as Sean’s failure in the past, although Sean never sees it as a failure.

Sean tries to explain misunderstanding among them. He explains that it is about

Will, and not Lambeau.

Fuck up me is said as showing casualness because it is a conversation

between Sean and Lambeau as a friend. Fuck up me is used to show that they have

a close relationship each others. He wants his friend, Lambeau, to know that he is

hurting or disturbing Sean now.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION

This chapter provides the answer of problems in Problem Formulation.

First, the answer of the first problem provides conclusion of swear word’s types

which are expressed in Good Will Hunting. The second is about the purposes of

swear words which are expressed in Good Will Hunting.

In order to categorise the types of swear words, Good Will Hunting provides

251 number of occurrences, but there are 32 analyzed data. Based on the answer of

the first problem about the types of swear words in Good Will Hunting, there are 6

of 7 types found in Good Will Hunting. There are copulative term (fuck), excretory

term (crap, shit, bullshit,and piss), body function term (ass, prick, and dick), animal

term (bitch), mother in law (motherfucker), and religious matter (God, hell, damn,

and Christ). From the collected data, copulative term fuck is commonly used in

Good Will Hunting.

The analysis shows that the most frequently used swear word types in Good

Will Hunting is copulative term, fuck. It is because “fuck” word is popular in

America (Fairman, 2009: 23). Since Good Will Hunting is an American movie,

almost all the characters in Good Will Hunting prefer to use copulative term, fuck.

It is popular because the most characters as Americans used to say fuck as a part of

their lifestyle. That’s why this swear word, fuck, is frequently used.

In the second problem, there are 4 of 5 purposes of swear words are

expressed in Good Will Hunting. They are insulting people, provoking people,

emphasizing certain things, and showing casualness. Based on the research result,

copulative term can be used in insulting, provoking, emphasizing, and showing

casualness. Excrematory term and body function are to insult, emphasize, and show

casualness. Animal term and mother in law are to show casualness. Religious

matter is to emphasize and show casualness. From the finding research, the most

frequently used swear word in the conversations is to emphasize something they

speak.

Seen from the story in Good Will Hunting, an emphasis is more frequently

used for expressing something stronger. Good Will Hunting provides more

arguments among characters in this movie. They need an emphasis to do argument.

It is to show the opinion about something, and feelings. It is employed to convince,

to and to describe or to explain something to be stronger.
