Testimony!Mieke van Rooyen

In January this year I went to Bali with Lt. Kat and we were invited to the 78th anniversary of the Denpasar Corps 2 Youth group. We didn’t know what we were in for and it was described to us as a birthday party – so we didn’t really know what to expect.

Picture seventy youth passionately worshiping God together proudly decked in uniform. It’s the most youth I’ve seen in uniform in one place enjoying each other’s company and being in the house of the Lord. The meeting was charismatic and filled with unspeakable energy. No one stood still; it was like being in a music video. We quickly caught on to the vibe and were soon dancing, being crazy, filled with joy and singing along to catchy Indonesian worship songs. The passionate preaching was followed by a sincere response to the message, I’ve never seen so many people kneel at the mercy seat. Every soul gathered in that meeting was connected to God and each other. This night changed me and my view on worship in The Salvation Army.

6 months later I was enrolled as a senior soldier. I couldn’t help but think about my dear "iends I found in Bali. In particular, my sponsor child Mayuni, and the captain’s son Rexy. I can’t help but imagine what

they would think if they could have been there. I hope they’d be proud of me but they’d probably wonder what took me so long. Both of them hold a level of spiritual maturity beyond their years. Their understanding is deep and their commitment is so strong. They both inspire me through what they’ve been through as they testi# to the grace of God in their lives.

My walk with God has been beautiful. I’ve honestly been blessed with a great 18 years. I’ve been completely supported and completely loved. I haven’t ba$led in the same way that others have. I haven’t struggled. I don’t know or understand why I haven’t, while others have, but I do know I am super thankful.

God helped me realise there are many youth deeply connected with The Salvation Army, because it the place they find salvation, "eedom and joy. A place where they find comfort in his word, his presence, his spirit and his people. I pray it could be the same for all young people. Being enrolled is not exactly admired or accepted by my peers. The thought that we might chose to pledge our life to something, to set high moral standards for ourselves, to surrender our lives to God is not only confusing to young people, it’s completely foreign.

Young people are being taught to be independence, to stand up, look out for ourselves, protect our own backs, our own interests. We want instant gratification, press a bu$on, tick a box, get what you want. As a Christian, gratification isn’t instantaneous. Life is a ba$le, we face adversity, we make tough decisions. I can say no. I believe, whole-heartedly that it will be worth it.

In 1st Peter 5:6-11 it says…I want to be strong and I want firm and I want to be steadfast. I want to be a child of God. No longer enslaved to sin, but fighting for the Lord.

That is why I wear my uniform. Sign my covenant.

I endeavour to live my life in the way that would most please God. Meanwhile, I’m going to do everything in my power to help others to please God and to fulfill the plans He has for their lives. I’m here to fight for the last, the lost and the least. And may the Lord make it so.

BIBLE READING PLAN: !" DAYS ON COVENANT

GOD’S COVENANT WITH ABRAHAMDay ! " God Calls Abram

Read " Genesis 12:1-9Contemplate ! What did God call Abram to do? Are there any conditions on God blessing Abram? Are the blessings only for Abram, or is God hinting at a bigger plan? What is Abram’s response to God’s call? What can we learn from the way God approached Abram and Abram’s response? What can we learn about the purpose of blessing?

Day # " God Gives the Land to Abram

Read " Genesis 13:14-18Contemplate ! How does this promise from God differ or expand on the promises made in Genesis 12:1-9? How does God expect Abram to live knowing that the land would be his?

Day $ " God Makes a Covenant with Abram

Read " Genesis 15:1-21Contemplate ! What does God tell Abram will happen in the years to come? Does God require anything of Abram in this covenant, are their any conditions? The passing of the blazing torch between the halves of the animals by God indicates that God will take on any penalties or curses that would eventuate from the breaking of this covenant. What does this tell us about the character of God that he would take those curses on?

Day % " The Covenant of Circumcision is Instituted

Read " Genesis 17:1-27Contemplate ! How long is this covenant going to last? Does God put a limit on it? What conditions does God now introduce to the relationship? What are the penalties for breaking the covenant by not being circumcised? What does the renaming of Abram and Sarai indicate?

Day & " God Tests Abraham

Read " Genesis 22Contemplate ! How must Abraham have felt when God asked him to sacrifice the son that he and Sarah had waited so long to have? How confused do you think you would be if God wanted to take away the very thing that he had promised you? What does God’s test of Abraham reveal about the priority he places on obedience? What relationship do you think obedience has to covenant?

Our Bible Study on Wednesday mornings has been very enlightening. We’re studying 40 Days on Covenant. So far, we’ve looked at Genesis and Exodus.I have found this very exciting, learning a lot. I’ve read these books before but never contemplated as I have done these last 3 weeks. If you are !ee on Wednesday mornings I’m sure t you will get a great deal out of this study! - Mary Viney

A Customer Services Representative gives instructions in how to install love.

Customer Service (CS) Rep. : Hello, how can I help you today?

Customer: Well, I think I've decided to install LOVE. Can you help me through the process?

CS Rep. : Yer, I can help. Are you ready to proceed?

Customer: Well, I'm not very technical, but I think I'm ready to install. So, what do I have to do first?

CS Rep. : The first step is to locate your HEART. Have you found it?

Customer: Yes, but there are several other programs running at the moment. Is it okay to install while they are running?

CS Rep. : What programs are running?

Customer: Well, let's see, I have PAST-HURT.EXE, LOW-ESTEEM.EXE, GRUDGE.EXE, and RESENTMENT.COM running at the moment.

CS Rep. : That’s no problem. LOVE will gradually erase PAST-HURT.EXE "om your current operating system. It may remain in your permanent memory, but it will no longer disrupt other programs. LOVE will eventually overwrite LOW-ESTEEM.EXE with a module of its own called HIGH-ESTEEM.EXE. However, you do have to completely turn off GRUDGE.EXE and RESENTMENT.COM. Those programs prevent LOVE "om being properly installed. So, can you turn those off now?

Customer: Um, I don't know how to. Can you tell me how, please?

CS Rep. : It’s my pleasure. Go to your Start menu and invoke FORGIVENESS.EXE. Do this as many times as necessary until GRUDGE.EXE

and RESENTMENT.COM have been completely erased.

Customer: Okay, I think that’s done. LOVE has started installing itself automatically. Is that normal?

CS Rep. : Yes. You should receive a message that says it will reinstall for the life of your HEART. Do you see that message?

Customer: Yes I do. Is it completely installed, now?

CS Rep. : Yes, but remember that you have only the base program. You need to begin connecting to other HEART's in order to get all of the upgrades.

Customer: Oh, my goodness, I have an error message already. What do I do?

CS Rep. : What does the message say?

Customer: Umm, 'ERROR 412 - PROGRAM NOT RUN ON INTERNAL COMPONENTS.' What does that mean?

CS Rep. : Don't worry about that one too much, it’s a common problem. It means that the LOVE program is set up to run on external HEARTS but has not yet been run on your HEART. It is one of those complicated programming things, but in non-technical terms it means you have to 'LOVE' your own machine before it can 'LOVE' others.

Customer: So what should I do?

CS Rep. : Can you pull down the directory called 'SELF-ACCEPTANCE'?

Customer: Yes, I have it.

CS Rep. : Excellent. You're ge$ing good at this.

Customer: Thank you!

CS Rep. : You're welcome. Click on the following files and then copy them to the 'MYHEART' directory: FORGIVE-

SELF.DOC, REALIZE-WORTH.TXT, and ACKNOWLEDGE- LIMITATIONS.DOC. The system will overwrite any conflicting files and begin patching any faulty programming. Also, you need to delete VERBOSE-SELF-CRITIC.EXE "om all directories, and then empty your recycle bin a&erwards to make sure it is completely gone and never comes back.

Customer: Got it. Hey! My HEART is filling up with new files. SMILE.MPG is playing on my monitor right now and it shows that PEACE.EXE, and CONTENTMENT.COM are copying themselves all over my HEART. Is this normal?

CS Rep.: Sometimes. For others it takes a while, but eventually everything gets downloaded at the proper time. So, LOVE is installed and running. You should be able to handle it "om here. One more thing before I go.

Customer: Yes?

CS Rep. : LOVE is "ee to everyone. So be sure to give it and its various modules to everybody you meet. They will in turn share it with other people and who knows, you might get some similarly cool modules back to you.

Customer: Cool, I’ll definitely do that, thanks for your help. By the way, what's your name?

CS Rep.: You can call me the Divine Cardiologist, also known as The Great Physician, but most do call me God. Most people feel all they need is an annual check-up to stay heart-healthy, but the manufacturer (Me) suggests a schedule of daily maintenance for maximum efficiency. Put another way, just stay in touch!

Customer: Definitely!

SHARING THE VISION 13 August 2012 The 2012 Olympics came to a close with last evening’s celebration. The whole world was engaged for 16 days. No doubt its impact was felt all around the world with national pride at its best when the gold medallists stood on the podium, the relevant country’s flag raised and its anthem played. In an effort to capitalise on the enthusiastic momentum within the United Kingdom, Prime Minister David Cameron has already launched a ‘go-forward scheme’ for young athletes. How far this nation came since London won the bid to stage the Olympics seven years ago! The vision was outlined in the bid but reality was a long way off. Naysayers struck a note of fear because of transportation nightmares, impact on the tourist industry and potential terrorist attacks. But today, only rejoicing and compliments are heard. There are many stories in the Scriptures that recount similar negative reactions. It was not uncommon for people to see the giants and not the fruit (Numbers 13), the enemy forces and not God’s chariots of fire (2 Kings 6), the dry bones and not an army on the move (Ezekiel 37). It is not wrong to look at the ‘what if’s’ when mapping the future. Some of us are wired that way. We want to count the cost, plan for unsettling eventualities. However, when God paints the picture of the future with his ambitious promises and clear purposes, he asks us to step out in faith and take hold of the future with courage and confidence. My travels in May to July involved five congresses (Denmark, The Netherlands and Czech Republic, United Kingdom with the Republic of Ireland, USA Western, Mexico), the international Conference of Leaders in Canada and a weekend at Old Orchard Beach Camp Meetings in USA Eastern. Participating in these events introduced me to visionaries and strategists. Each gathering took months, even years of planning after the initial concept was conceived. No doubt there were unique challenges. Yet the leaders pressed on believing that these series of meetings would be instrumental in bringing the territory together in worship, fellowship and mission. Even more significant was their belief that the Lord would come with blessing beyond what could be anticipated. Prayer undergirded every facet, every dream. And God did not disappoint! Mercy seat responses were unforgettable and new direction was established. Only the future will tell how significant these events were in the life of the Army. Please continue to pray in thanksgiving and in faith for a Spirit-filled Army. As I write to you, I am aware that what I have shared is on the macro (large scale) level: Olympics, Old Testament accounts of the nation of Israel and Salvation Army territorial or international events. Yes, our God is the big picture God who plans in love for nations and churches. But he also has you in mind when he casts a vision of hope. There can appear to be many hurdles for you to overcome as you face the future, but be assured your God is gracious and mighty. Move forward today with courage and confidence. God bless you richly and rest in the knowledge that he is with you. Sincerely, Linda Bond General
