THE UPDATE

An Easter Message

The Rev. Timm High, Presbytery Leader for Mission and Vision/Stated Clerk

When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.” Mark 16.1-8a To the church of God that is Riverside Presbytery, to those called to be saints, greetings; A blessed Easter to each of you! Easter is upon us: a time present to annually to reflect intentionally not only on what God has done but what God is still doing in the world in the name of Jesus through the passion and purpose of the Holy Spirit. The story above holds many details. Three women, all named; their intentional purchase of spices after sundown on Saturday; their ‘very early’ travel; concerns about the stone; how they ‘looked up’ (which implies down-cast eyes as well); the factors around the young man; the message they were given; the ‘terror and amazement’ which seized them. And, it’s a strange ending to this Gospel, one that has led to numerous attempts to add endings. The women “looked up”. By looking up (which I take as looking around/ahead), they saw an opening where they had worried about a blockage, and by having the courage to enter the space they were overwhelmed not just by what they saw (or didn’t see) but also by the commission they were given. The text says that they were seized by “terror and amazement”. It’s common for us to focus on the former, but it is an ‘and’ and they must have been equally embraced by the latter, or perhaps the story might not have been heard. Easter is an opportunity to be reminded of how we have been invited to ‘look up’ and discover where Jesus is ahead of us. Thank you for your companionship on The Way, and may this season of Easter find you active in God’s mission: both in dialogue with God and in step with Jesus through the passion and purpose of the Holy Spirit.

March Presbytery Meeting Summary Worship included a hopeful message by Rev. Paul Knopf and Commissioning of General Assembly Commissioners Susan Skoglund (with Becky Bane as alternate) as Ruling Elder Commissioner, and Lily Bolaños as our Young Adult Advisory Delegate (YAAD), with the plan to Commission Rev. Julie Hodges (with Rev James Munyi as alternate), Minister of the Word & Sacrament Commissioner, at the June meeting.

Rev. Timm High provided background and Rev. Tina Blair the motion for rescinding the November 18, 2017 Presbytery of Riverside decision regarding the dismissal of the Big Bear Presbyterian Church.

Tina Blair presented the motion, and Jerri Rodewald additional explanation, of an overture to the 223rd General Assembly ,“Praying for a Movement of the Spirit to Engage Presbyterian Congregations in Nation-Wide Action to Prevent Gun Violence.

Rev. Mickie Choi PILP PCUSA, presented checks to Northkirk Presbyterian in Rancho Cucamonga and Grace Presbyterian in Temecula. She also provided information about the Presbyterian Investment & Loan Program.

Susan Skoglund, Committee on Nominations brought forward for the Class of 2020, Rev. Paul Knopf for Partners in Ministry Committee and Cindi Pringle for Property, Finance, Investment and Funds Development Committee. The Committee is seeking replacements for those committee and commission members who will complete their second term at the end of June 2018.

“How and where did we experience the Holy Spirit within this meeting?” Comments reflected gratitude for the civil discourse of potentially divisive issues brought by the Presbytery Commission and the Finance Committee. The Spirit was noticed in insights on the gracious dismissal process, wisdom and words of empathy in Wildomar’s financial situation, and a sense of open hearts & peace to listen to one another and care for one another while discerning a decision.

Canoeing - The Adventure Continues with Ruth At the end of the Presbytery meeting, we practiced explorer thinking with the Biblical story of Ruth and Naomi. That study and other questions are available under Explore Canoeing on our website. If you could not attend or would like to revisit the LEaD keynote address by Tod Bolsinger, a video of the session and related slides are on the Presbytery Leadership Training Page. .If you would like a copy of the Canoeing book, please contact Carrie at the Presbytery office.

Canoeing with the Presbytery Meeting Perhaps consider: Where do you see new communities, new practices, &new ways of thinking? Where do we need to get to the root and more radically pursue the voice and mission of God? When are we defaulting to the familiar reliance on fear, “facts”, & force.

Rev. Narcissis Tucker-Bishop, Racial Ethnic Pastoral Leadership Coordinator, Synod of SoCal and Ha-waii spoke openly about the need to be truly welcoming and the need for racial discrimination training. The Antiracism Workshop is Saturday, April 14, 9 AM-12 PM at Monte Vista Grove Homes, 2889 San Pasqual St., Pasadena, CA 91107. OPEN TO ALL Workshop Leader: Rev. Eric Law of Kaleidoscope Institute Please RSVP with Fried Wilson at [email protected] Lunch is provided with RSVP
